Roster Moves Needed
It has been discussed in the threads, but I wanted to take a moment and outline my recommendations for roster moves at this time. Nothing earth shattering here, but figured I would get out my predictions before any official word comes down.
I would call up:
Jamie Hoffmann- Hoffmann is a right handed bat who can play all 3 outfield positions. After being DFA'd last season by the club, outrighted to the minors, picked up by the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft and ultimately returned, Hoffmann has done his best to get back to the big squad. Hoffmann has posted a wOBA of .351 as the starting CF for the Isotopes. Hoffmann is not on the 40 man roster, however the team has adequate space to add him at this time.
Kenley Jansen- The Dodgers bullpen sucks, and as Brandon argued earlier, Jansen is the best reliever in the system. The converted catcher is raw to be sure, but he has an insane K/PA of 45%. Jansen has a FIP of 1.52 in Chattanooga.
Brent Leach- Not exactly a perfect choice, but he is a lefty who has put together some decent numbers since being demoted to AA. Leach has a FIP of 3.10 while being worked out as a starter. Leach would not be considered for the starting job in Los Angeles, instead will be a LOOGY replacing a guy who recently cleared waivers.
I would send down:
A.J Ellis- Sorry Ellis, but there is no reason at all to have 3 catchers on the team.
George Sherrill (DFA)- Sherrill has already cleared waivers and has allegedly refused an assignment to AAA. At this point, its quite clear that Torre doesn't trust Sherrill at all and his statistics this season have been a disaster. Best to just move on.
Travis Schlichting- I actually like Schlichting and wouldn't mind keeping him up, but he gets the boot over Justin Miller because he has options. Schlicting's ERA is out-performing his x-FIP by a margin of 2.50 to 4.77 so he's bound to hurt the club if continued to be relied upon. If Miller is given another week before being DFA'd, Jon Link could just as easily replace him if the requisite amount of time hasn't passed yet for Schlichting.
Any other ideas for roster moves?

Totally agree on these moves. I might even take it a step further and put JMac back in the pen. I dont think he profiles too well as a starter, and he would be one of the better pen arms we have. Of course that leaves us with no 5th starter, but thats basically the situation now. A bullpen with Jansen, Leach, and JMac and without Sherrill, Miller, and Schlicting is a huge improvement.
Or give J-Mac more then one start
If we had a semi competent left fielder he would have given up only 3 runs.
If you wanted JMac in the pen, you’d need to move someone else out. Unless you are going to put Monk in the starting rotation.
I assume the club would prefer to call up Ely if they put JMac in the pen, meaning either Monk or Miller would have to go.

Ideally it would be Monk because i dont think he is good, but the team has already committed itself to keeping him on all year.

OT: Screamo
There was some debate on this a while back and I have some answers thanks to my trusty friend wikipedia
Modern music genres, such as post-hardcore, metalcore, deathcore and (melodic) death metal as well as others are often incorrectly referred to as “screamo”.38 This is because many define screamo as any style of music that incorporates screamed vocals, claiming that the term “describes a thousand different genres.”28 One musician alleged that the term “has been kind of tainted in a way, especially in the States.”26
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screamo#Misuse_of_the_term_.22screamo.22
Like I said earlier
Screamo.. or “Skramz” as I like to call it, are bands like Saetia, Orchid, Joshua Fit for Battle, Neil Perry…
Screamo.. or “Skramz” as I like to call it, are bands like Saetia, Orchid, Joshua Fit for Battle, Neil Perry…Skramz 4 lyfe.
Screamo..
I remember that shit.. Fucking tight pants bastards who would try to round house you in the face during a song. ERRR
Theoretically
What would happen if every team coach on the field were ejected by the umps? One of the players would have to be appointed player-manager? Ned would walk downstairs and play field manager? They’d get some guy who helps out in batting practice or something?
I don't know why not release Sherrill now
Since if he refuses assignment he becomes a free agent and isn’t entitled to his remaining money. I also don’t know why Torre didn’t pinch hit for Kershaw and warm up Sherrill to throw a beanball at Rowand. Did he think Sherrill would miss? I know that would get him kicked off the White Sox.
of course Sherrill would miss
three times to strike Rowand out
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 21, 2010 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions
No. He’s now entitled to his salary. The process for him to opt out of his contract and become a free agent has passed. He chose to decline the assignment to Triple-A and stay on the Dodgers roster. The Dodgers will now have to cut him and pay the rest of his salary.
I wish someone would talk to Ned about George.
Are they really that worried about having to cut him and pay his salary when he’s not on the team anymore? Don’t they realize that the team has a better chance of winning (and winning could = more money) with George off the team?
The team had no problem cutting their losses with Andruw Jones once it became clear that Manny, Ethier and Kemp were all better than him.
I think Sherill will end up getting cut.

Roster Moves?
Replace Torre with a coin flip. Should I use Broxton? Coin says yes!
Send Sherrill back to Indy Ball Does Sherrill suck? Coin says yes!
Bring up Jansen? That sounds too easy. Would Jansen fuck shut up? Coin says yes!!
Things I just found out
Stephen Strasburg and Mike Leake played little league baseball together in San Diego.
They played with Giants prospect Thomas Neal, too. also 1 or 2 other guys.

I would like as complete of a purge of the pen as possible. I like your three for three. I was thinking Justin Miller was worse than Travis Schlichting but I was wrong. If TS has options, send him down. I am not a huge fan of Hoffmann but he is a near-Reed Johnson which may be necessary as long as Garret Anderson is around. I might go one further and bring up Josh Lindblom and waive GA outright or bring up Lindblom instead of Kenley Jansen.
Regarding the farmhand righties, some of them may be kept down intentionally because they may be trade bait.

My two cents on last night.
McClelland and crew need to learn about following the spirit of the rule versus the letter of the rule.
The spirit of the two trips to the mound rule is to (1) prevent an unnecessary delay in the game and (2) give the team’s relievers extra amount of time to warm up. Clearly, Mattingly’s intentions were neither of those. He turned around, walked 5 steps back to the fringe of the mound, spoke 1 sentence to Loney, and headed back to the dugout.
It was a stupid move by Bochy but an even stupider move by McClelland and crew to enforce the rule in that situation.
I also wish the umpires were less grabby last night. Stop touching our players and sending them off the field. I loved seeing Casey Blake give them an earful on how stupid it was.

We'd be screaming bloody murder
if Bochy had pulled what Mattingly did last night. It was a stupid mistake and the Dodgers paid for it. Spirit versus letter is a bad argument. If you don’t like the rule, get the rule changed. But don’t complain about getting called on it.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man
I really would not have cared if Bochy had done that last night.
Why? Because it had no impact at all on the game. We didn’t even have a reliever warming up so you can’t say that perhaps Bochy or the umpires thought one of our relievers was given extra time to warm up (be it intentional or not).
I think you’re right. It was a stupid ticky-tack call, but technically the right one minus the fact Broxton should have been forced to pitch to one batter while someone warmed. What gets me is why the mound visit. starts at the foul line but ends at the mound. Seems it should start and end at the same place.
"Go fuck yourself" -Eric Stephen 6-29-2010
"Oh honey, I'm chalk full of juju" -Maddz 7-15-2010
It was not technically the right call
1. The rules are vague on what constitutes a second visit to the mound
2. The rules were not applied correctly as they did not follow the book
3. If you are not going to follow the book, at least make sense
Fail on all counts.
Hold on guys, are we really sure about this George Sherrill hate? I mean, look at this I just found.

Possible move
I agree about calling up Hoffman, and between him and Paul we should be covered, but I would try Blake there at some point as well.
With Blake in left, Dewitt could shift to third and perhaps Dejesus could get a shot at 2nd. This could go a long way towards making the Dodger’s defense better.
This could be a bit premature, but I just can’t see Blake holding down third next year. I like him as a bench player though.
“The Beard” could be the next “killer Tomato”.

blake would not look good in left
Then bench Blake
Ethier in left, Paul/Hoffman platoon in right.
Not true
We are primarily talking about while Manny is out, I don’t think it would be a stretch to move the guy to an easier position which he already has extensive time at.
I’m with silverwidow.
Ethier should move to LF everyday Manny and GA aren’t playing, but its not going to happen.
by Michael White on Jul 21, 2010 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions
Again, Ethier is not changing positions this year. It’s a different game when you’re making 6 million dollars and have credentials.
I can't agree with that.
It is one thing to say Torre is too dumb to do it, but it is wrong to think that Ethier can’t make that mid season transition.
Sure, he can make it, but they won’t ask him to do it. It’s politics, plain and simple. If you follow the Dodgers long enough, you should know how things work.
ugh
So you think Ethier’s pride would be hurt by moving from right to left? Like it’s a demotion or something. I think not.
Delias Man and I were laughing about this the other day.
Ethier is like a grizzled veteran. That’s his personality. So if the Dodgers wouldn’t tell Kent to play first base, they won’t tell Ethier (now that he’s a bona fide star) to play left field.
by Michael White on Jul 21, 2010 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions
I think so.
A left fielder who hits the same as a right fielder is less valuable.

Slightly different in my estimation. By moving Ethier to the “you can’t play defense” outfield position, it could potentially be seen as a slight. I’m not saying Ethier would view it that way, but the potential is there.

They area also in 4th place and without Manny. Forgive me if I hold optimizing the productivity of my team over a player’s desire.
But that Player's temperment

You may have noticed how the organization is requiring teams to pay the salaries of players they acquire through trade. They claim they can’t afford the 2-3 million left on their contracts. Yet before the season the Dodgers threw millions away on bench players they could have filled internally from the start (Ausmus, Belliard, Johnson, Carroll, GA) idiocy.

sorry I'm late to this convo, just finished the last thread, but I forsee us holding at the deadline
maybe adding like 1 reliever and/or a 5th starter…but essentially doing nothing that makes a real impact on the farm or big club
personally I agree with Jon Weisman’s take, that it would be smarter to go for it and make a few smart trades, hope that current players pick it up, and maybe ignite the bench a bit with a Marlon Anderson type guy and a few pitchers of quality. I agree that trading would be the best plan B as well. I personally wouldn’t be outraged if we traded, with ownership penny pinching, that might be the only way we can acquire decent prospects these days!
It just seems like holding for the most part might be the overall safest route from a PR standpoint, and will keep Frank out of the spotlight come July 31st…just my take
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
holding would put Frank IN the spotlight for failing to try to compete.

William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
I guess it kind of depends on how we look at the deadline
if we continue to play as we have been, I see us holding, if make some ground back thenI could see us going for it…my only problem with “going for it” is that we wont bring in anyone that makes us WS caliber, so why do it
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
I agree. My only argument is that “WS Caliber” is the exact same thing as “playoff caliber”. As with any sport, the regular season is simply to get to the playoffs and hopefully you’re playing well when the playoffs come. No playoff games are won in July.
Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.
I may not agree with that fully
but I definitely agree thats the case in Baseball, so I see the other side of it..and that is also what gives me hope that we can just get in still and maybe make another run…at that same time though, after almost getting there twice, I keep feeling as though maybe we need one real stud at the front of the rotation to get it done..oh well, we’ll just have to see
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
Please keep in mind one thing, and this goes for everyone
Making the playoffs is hard.
We don’t do it very often, and even the Yankees went 30 years without a ring. Beyond all the other reasons for loving this grand sport, my favorite reason is simple: the best team doesn’t always win. The Yankees spent over a billion dollars over six years to win one ring. We just need to make the playoffs, wild card or otherwise, and then know that the quartet of Kershaw, Billingsley, Kuroda and Padilla will at least give us a chance every night. We’ve been doomed by many things this year, but none so glaring as injuries and the fifth starter. Injuries we can’t help, but we can hope for swift recoveries and minimal lingering effects. The fifth starter spot we just need to stabilize so we can make the playoffs.
Which, again, is no easy task no matter who you are or what your team looks like.
Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.

yep I agree as well
I jsut think that in other sports, mainly the NBA, getting in to the playoffs is quite enough..I quality of team and home court advantage are much more important..but that’s a whole separate and unimportant debate haha

yes, but in the NHL/NBA
roughly half the league makes the playoffs. It’s not really an accomplishment and really only speaks to the teams who don’t make it.

how hard it is to make the playoffs, and how all it takes is one hot streak
William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.
Actually, based on my argument
I’m thrilled with this team going into the playoffs. This is the streakiest damn team I’ve seen in awhile. If we can just get on a hot streak at the end of September we’re going to make some noise again.

MLB says Broxton should have stayed in to face Torres
per Hank Schulman / SF Chronicle:
The official said that the rule requiring a pitcher to be removed after two mound visits should have been superseded by a comment underneath Rule 8.06 that says if two mound visits occur while the same batter is up, the umpires must eject the manager and require the pitcher to face that batter. Only then, should the pitcher be removed.
The mistake was discovered as the umpiring crew engaged in its normal postmortem with league umpiring evaluators.
Had the Dodgers protested the game, there is a chance the protest would have been upheld, and the game replayed. But the league official said the Dodgers neglected to protest the game.
Manager
has to be done immediately, during the game

Well, the manager was ejected and not present
Mattingley isn’t a manager. Is there any chance they can make a retroactive protest on that basis?
whomever is the acting manager is the one who would get tossed
by Eric Stephen on Jul 21, 2010 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions
but is he the one who files the protest?
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 21, 2010 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes:
Whenever a manager protests a game because of alleged misapplication of the rules the protest will not be recognized unless the umpires are notified at the time the play under protest occurs and before the next pitch, play or attempted play. A protest arising on a game-ending play may be filed until 12 noon the following day with the league office.
by Eric Stephen on Jul 21, 2010 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions
Can the managers
break out a rule book at home plate and have the umpires point to the rule? Or are they suppose to know all the rules? If I was the manager and was unsure of any strange ruling, I’d just quietly submit a protest. This is Little League afterall, right? :)
I'd like to quote rule 17.98.323
the “They started it” rule

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 21, 2010 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions
I don’t see anything in the rule above about a protesting manager “getting tossed”. The manager has to make the protest, you say. OK, I guess Mattingley was acting manager. Not a very good actor, or manager. Didn’t even look like a manager, he looked like a dork lost in the dark. He didn’t even check whether Sherrill got his warmup that he had just negotiated. How could turning around to talk to Honeycutt for a few seconds possibly be enough time for Sherrill? He was probably just afraid to go talk to the umnp again to check as he might have been ejected for going to the mound again, for all he knew, just by stepping out of the dugout. I do feel for him there. Who can know all these rules, when even the umps don’t? I really wouldn’t be surprised to find he was afraid to approach the ump again to query Sherrill’s warmup time, because he was afrid he’s get thrown out too.

Oh, wow. So the manager can make his protest on his way out f the protest concerns the initial ruling. But by the time the ump error occurred in not letting Broxton pitch to the next batter, the manager was necessarily gone! He can’t protest then. Only the acting manager can do that, and he’s no manager. He hasn’t even had to pass the manager’s exam yet. ;-)
I missed most of the game and post-game
but saw that someone mentioned a rule that said the official visit begins when the manager crosses the base line. On the second visit, Mattingly never crossed the base line. This seems to contradict the ruling about leaving the dirt on the mound. Where is the line in the sand for the official visit, the mound or the base line? Thanks.
vr, Xei
the visit ends once he’s off the dirt of the mound.
At that point, any subsequent visits to said dirt equals another visit.

Should always file a protest on these type of things
You can always withdraw the protest after you find out you were wrong. Lame!

Think of it this way. Jansen comes up and does a Rick Vaughn impression. Dude’s gonna be on Torre’s shit list for years because nothing pisses off managers more than young dudes walking people.
Better to wait a little longer for him to work on his control.

can we put him back on waivers yet to see if he’s changed his mind about the minors thing? maybe give his agent the chance to find another team to pick up the prorated min?
Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.
if they released him
he could sign with a team and that team would pay the min. If he was claimed, then they’d have to pay his salary.
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 21, 2010 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions
but at least this way he gets to stay in a MLB organization instead of sitting at home until someone signs him. Even if its the minors, that has to be a better option for him, right?
Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.
he was getting paid either way. At least if his agent has time to work out a trade he can at least have some semblance of choice in the matter instead of getting released and paid, then sitting around and trying to stay (get) in shape while waiting on a phone call.
I’m basing this on the assumption that he’d rather pitch than sit on his ass at home since he’d make the same amount of money.

None of this would have happened
if they just played baseball and forgot about the stupid retaliation stuff. Torre and Schaeffer would have still been there, Torre wouldn’t have walked back to the mound, and even if he did Schaeffer probably would have known to protest something on principle, even if he didn’t remember the rule about the Broxton staying in to face one batter.
Pragmatic!
They could have waited to retaliate till today’s game as well …

Joel Pineiro for Casey Blake and Prospect. Blake and Pineiro’s contracts end after next year and he’d give the Angels a little cost savings and production at third while we get a 1 year loaner of a #4 starter.
