Seven Game Losing Streak? Not On Chad Billingsley's Watch
On a night when the Dodgers bullpen needed some relief, Chad Billingsley provided it, throwing a 125-pitch shutout, beating the Giants 2-0 to salvage a game against San Francisco. He may have only struck out three batters, but 16 groundouts helped Billingsley shake hands with his catcher.
Billingsley has two career shutouts, both at home against the Giants, the last one coming July 30, 2008.
The last shutout by a Dodger pitcher was by Eric Stults, who also shutout the Giants at home, on May 9, 2009, 225 games ago.
Casey Blake drove in both runs for the Dodgers, with a home run in the second inning and a single in the eighth.
Everything feels better in Dodger land tonight. The Dodgers take their one-game winning streak into a four-game series against the Mets, starting tomorrow with Hiroki Kuroda facing Hisanori Takahashi.
WP - Chad Billingsley (8-5): 9 IP, 5 hits, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts
LP - Barry Zito (8-5): 7 1/3 IP, 6 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts

So how have the Dodgers fared when a Japanese starter faces another Japanese starter? If only someone could look that up…

The best recipe for a Dodger victory is to avoid the bullpen altogether. Jenks just blew another save for the White Sox. Two Japanese pitchers squaring off in tomorrow’s game vs the Mets.

Change of view
Because of the ending of the six-game losing streak, and the confounding of Plaschke/casual fan expectations of Billingsley, I think there’s a good chance that this game gets remembered, and changes the popular (read: uninformed) view of Chad, even when he has a bad game sometime in the future. I mean, he’s already had a CG shutout, but it’s as if it never happened. I don’t think this one will be the same.
Great start tonight by Chad

Very late thought on Mattingly meandering moundwards twice in one trip
Given that the Dodgers once walked off with a win because Tommy Lasorda noticed the catcher picking up a thrown ball (a pitch that had bounced away) with his mask and knew his rulebook, I can’t hardly complain about Bochy pointing out Mattingly’s dance-step on the mound, off the mound, on the mound again.
From baseball-reference.com’s “bullpen” entry on Lasorda:
On August 12, the Dodgers defeat the Pirates, 11-10 in 11 innings, with the help of an unusual play. With the potential winning run at third base, Mitch Webster of the Dodgers swings at a pitch in the dirt. When Pittsburgh rookie catcher Angelo Encarnacion casually fields the ball with his mask, Lasorda appeals, citing the rule which awards a runner two bases if a fielder uses his mask to touch a thrown ball. The umpires agree and allow the winning run to score. The runner than scored was Roberto Kelly, currently an SF base coach, who was doubled there by current Albuquerque manager Tim Wallach.

I was thinking as I left the Stadium, it's probably been many years
since I saw a complete game shutout victory by a Dodger pitcher.
So I checked handy dandy baseballreference.com and saw that Derek Lowe pitched a complete game shutout on April 15, 2005 (that was during that wonderful opening stretch before that season became “what did the Jacksonville team do tonight?” But as I reviewed the shutouts from 2005-2009, I saw that I attended a Kuroda masterpiece on June 6, 2008. A brief review of DT comment threads confirmed my attendance (and an alibi from LAT if I ever need one). So I actually saw one only 2 years ago.
I was fortunate enough to be at two shutouts recently. The 1-0 ‘haha you didn’t give up a hit but we still won’ game, and Stults’ complete game. Both were epic except I had to explain to my girlfriend why I was so excited about beating no hit.

I think Mattingly made up for his goof the night before actually
1) He let Bills finish the CG. Sure it may have been as much out of desperation, but would Torre have done that? Likely not.
2) Kuo was warming up because he’s their only reliever (aside from the unavailable Broxton) who is good and they couldn’t afford to put a must win game in the hands of Justin Miller.

You have a one run lead going into the bottom of the 8th
You better have someone warming up. Actually, Kuo wasn’t really firing it up in the pen and after the top of the 9th inning started, he was basically standing on the mound waiting to see if Bills got in trouble.

Billingsley has been really unlucky this year — his FIP entering the game was only 3.45 (more than a full run lower than his ERA). I’m curious what it will be now.
His FIP wouldn't have improved much after striking out only 3 and walking 2
The innings probably helped lower it, but not by much I’d guess.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
OK, here's Plaschke
This is what Dylan’s tweet must have been referring to:
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-plaschke-dodgers-20100722,0,7338892.column
Plaschke’s view, for once, conforms to what 97% of posters here have said: that if Torre steps down, Donnie Boy is not ready and the job should go to Wallach. IF Torre stays, Donnie and Wallach should trade places and make a judgment at the end of next year as to which is better.
The crazy thing is that, although the article is datelined at 11:27 pm tonight, Plaschke evidently didn’t wait to see how tonight’s game turned out and based his view entirely on last night! Even there, he has no idea that Mattingley missed the umpires’ mistake. What a dork. He also didn’t take into account or have anything to say about tonight’s success, the decision to leave Bills in for the 9th, or anything.
I am sure Dylan’s tweets were about food or about some press box ribbing and had nothing to do with what was going in the newspaper.
Also, I don’t think anything that happened last night would or should have changed Plaschke’s opinion.
Plaschke's Opinion should be the name of a pub

The thing is I am sure Mattingly would be a fine manager one day in the sense that they are overrated. I bet all the old time managers have made stupid mistakes, especially in the beginning. That being said, I think Wallach is the most qualified, and that should be the most important part of the decision.

No. He would have put Bills in for one batter in the 9th and then pulled him even though he got the guy out. Or maybe after two. It’s like a nervous disease for Torre. He’ll only let veterans go for a CG. Since we no longer have Lowe, the answer’s no. Now that Bills has proved himself, however, due to Torre being grounded, he’ll let him do it again, next time. By next year, Bills will be considered a vet.
As noted in the article
Eric Stults, neophyte major-leaguer, threw a CG shutout while Torre was managing.

Torre was the manager for Billingsley’s last shutout.
I think circumstances dictated Billingsley staying in for the ninth. If Broxton and Kuo weren’t both tired, I don’t think Mattingly would have deviated from the script – I think he would have had Broxton go in.
And I think, given that Broxton and Kuo were tired, Torre would have done just as Mattingly did and let Billingsley try to finish things off.
Torre is also the one who has let Billingsley throw 120 pitches twice this season.
The funniest part of this
is that I was making almost the same comment at the same time on Dodger Thoughts! :)

A lot of recent discussion about possible moves
The one I’d like to see also involves calling up a pitcher from AA, while also keeping the heavily-tattooed major-leaguer in the bullpen as well. Yes, I want both Justin Miller and Justin Miller in LA’s bullpen.

Hurrah for Bills (shown on right)

(I don’t know who the corkscrew would be).

corkscrew is slang for screwball, but we haven’t had a guy throwing that since Fernando I don’t think.

Honeycutt noticed flaw in Bills' delivery
from Dylan H’s story in LA Times:
pitching coach Honeycutt said that he noticed a flaw in Billingsley’s delivery in St. Louis.
“We noticed something in the last game where he was getting a little closed off again, letting his shoulder get a little too rotated,” Honeycutt said. “When he stays in line and his command is better, but it’s more about deception. When he was getting rotation, I think, obviously, the hitters saw the ball better.”
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
Mound game question
Besides the obvious Mattingley multiple mistakes, with a not warm Sherrill in, why not have the lefty throw over to first 2 or 3 times?
I don’t think that will do anything to get him warmed up. He would need to throw actual pitches, in his normal motion.

I love Bills!
So glad to see him dominate last night, or at least read about it.
Our team pulled off an amazing victory last night over the first place grown men frat team. One of the guys on their team supposedly played up through AA…he can freaking mash the ball…what are you doing in a rec softball league?
Even with our fastest OF coming out in the 4th with an ankle injury, we held on to win with only 3 in the OF…final score 32-25!

Sherrill is a bum
Follow me. He gets traded here last year, jams and helps in the playoffs.
This year, he struggles. He supposedly is OK, just needs to work it out.
Clears waivers, he will get paid.
If he has any love for the team at all, go to AA or AAA and get your sh&t together. You can still be back by August 31st and the playoff roster deadline.
We need an effective bullpen, especially with Tron and Belly-O down. We just can’t waste a roster pen nor can we afford to let him work out his problems in the bigs anymore.
So sit his ass down and have Torre ask him nicely.
Let him sleep on it.
If he comes back without the right answer, release him with gusto as he’s not a team player.
I’m sure Will Ohman last year thought he would be back by September as well, too.
I agree that they should probably just release Sherrill, but I can see that he wanted some sort of assurance that he would be back by a certain date for him to accept the minor league assignment.

By the end of August he was healthy, and never got called up

right Sherrill was here then wasn’t he?

BTW
I was reading the MiLB update, how about Russ Mitchell? I know he’s not on the 40-man, but any chance he gets a Sept callup?
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 22, 2010 9:22 AM PDT reply actions
Very small chance
It would depend on other moves, but right now there is limited 40-man space.
by Eric Stephen on Jul 22, 2010 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions
too bad
from the sounds of him, he could easily do what Belliard is doing for the team right now.
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 22, 2010 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions
I disagree
he’ll be on the 40 man this fall, I expect to see him this Sept. Maybe before when Blake goes on the DL.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
My coworker and I spent a few minutes trying to replicate the picture at the top
That’s incredibly difficult. Billz must have ridiculous hip flexors and hammies! It’s not like he’s swinging his leg quickly up…man. I’m really impressed.
And yes, I will be trying to do that all day. I have 6 days left at work after today. :)
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
He’s got a Jack Black like ratio of girth to hip flexibility.

The pitcher last night asked me to read this
“Warning, the surgeon general of pitching warns that viewing this pitcher is equal to 27 orgasms”

ridculous hip flexors and hammies
just look at the pic. Huge ass legs. Tree Trunks.

I know
I’ve been trying to find a way to laud Chad’s thick physique without it coming across as horrendously naughty but it hasn’t really worked so far. But yeah. He’s got huge legs. It’s awesome. I think his legs could beat Broxton’s legs in a fight.

If you look at Chris Withrow's legs (story after this one)
Looks like he has mastered it too
by Julio Nievas on Jul 22, 2010 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions
funny thing is
it’s not just his legs, dud is thick in general.
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 22, 2010 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions
So Maddz wasn’t the one who made this horrendously naughty.
by regfairfield on Jul 22, 2010 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions
just trying to help
also, that was supposed to say “Dude is thick”. Chad is not a dud.
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 22, 2010 9:47 AM PDT up reply actions
Hence physique
but I can’t go around talking about how thick a guy is, eyebrows would be raised.
