MiLB Dodger Recap 7/21/10 - Russ Mitchell powering his way up the charts

AAA – Powered by five home runs the Isotopes rolled to a 14 - 5 victory. Mitchell hit his 16th (6 in July), Gibbons hit two (17), Sellers hit his 4th, and the Aussie even knocked one out. Charlie Haeger went seven strong innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, while only walking one.  Russ Mitchell has been a different hitter since he went to the AFL for the second time last year. He was one of the best hitters in the AFL and that has continued in the PCL. I'll have to check but I expect he's the best hitting 3rd baseman in the PCL right now.  When he was playing 1st base in AA I lost some interest but if he can actually play 3rd base, then he probably has a future.

AA – No Games

High A – Redding was pitching his best game of year when he ran into trouble in the sixth inning. For five innings he was hurling a shutout but by the time the sixth ended he had given up three runs as the 66ers fell 4 - 3. Aquasviva walked four in two innings of scoreless relief.  Austin Gallagher hit his 3rd home run of the year.

A – Allen Webster only went five innings, but he made them count. He only gave up three hits, one run, one walk, and had five K's. Not much offense but the Loons didn't need much to win behind Webster 3 - 1. Cavazos-Galvez extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Rookie Ogden – Raptors win 7 - 3 behind Nick Akins 3rd home run and three RBI game. Akins just seem to have no business in either rookie league. He destroyed the Arizona league and is not missing a beat in the Pioneer league. Since staring 1 - 7, he has hit a home run in three straight games and has nine home runs in less then 100 ab's in 2010. Jonathan Garcia collected two singles as did Leon Landry.  Chatsworth star Bobby Coyle hit his 2nd home. Patterson started, went five innings giving up eight hits along the way.

Rookie Arizona Dodgers win 6 - 5,  Charlie Mirabal had three hits to boost his average to 343. Nam had two hits and continues to lead the team in hitting (.373) now that Nick Akins is doing his work in the Pioneer league.

People Who Like Nick Akins

What am I missing?

I know some of you think he’s a good prospect, but I dunno why. I realize he’s raking, but he’s 22 and Ogden is…well…Pioneer League.

It's a hope thing

What? A hitting prospect? SS or it didn’t happen.

On a side note, I love me some Leon Landry.

I don't think he's a prospect (Yet)

Just because we write about the exploits does not mean we think they are prospects. I’m sure breaking balls will end him.

Did you know

Great Lakes is having a heck of a season, they are currently 20-5 in the second half and overall they are 63-31, which is the best record for any full season minor league club thus far.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 22, 2010 9:08 AM PDT reply actions

I didn’t know that. Sweet.

by kinbote on Jul 22, 2010 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions

They should be

best rotation in the minor leagues.

I didn’t realize that. I read the final score, but only to see if the pitching prospect was on the hook for runs…

by Michael White on Jul 22, 2010 10:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Angelo Songo is having a hell of a year

.303/376/.491 with 12 homeruns and 22 doubles

Blake Smith is doing similarly well with:

.302/.375/.511 with 12 homeruns and 18 doubles

Brian Cavazos-Galvez is doing much better than he started from what I remember:

.291/.325/.455 7 hr 29 doubles 30 sb 9 cs with that nifty 19 game hitting streak

Then we can file these next ones under SSS, but still very great to see:

Jonathan Garcia:

.344/.404/.544 3 hr 9 2b in 90 at bats

Jake Lemmerman:

.367/.415/.541 2 hr 11 2b in 109 AB

Leon Landry:

.396/.439/.593 with 2 hr 2 3b and 8 2b in 91 at bats

It’s great to see so many positional prospects hitting so well right now, even if it is LoA and rookie league.

That is the problem

it is Low A and Rookie Leagues and other then Garcia these guys based on age should be tearing up those leagues. The good news is that they are, but they have so many rungs to still climb.

You've always gotta ruin my good time with your sound logic, don't you?

I don’t expect any of these guys to hit .320+ at higher levels, I just hope this means they got promoted faster and they can keep up their play to an extent.

Thanks for the stats. Nice to see them like that. I’m on board with our low A talent.

by kinbote on Jul 22, 2010 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Phit, OT but

I need your opinion on Rubby. Don’t you think he’s our third best prospect? He’s like Webster but with a better fastball. I’m very impressed at his numbers and scouts say he has a plus plus FB and a plus change up, which is devastating. He’s working on his curveball, but I think we should promote him.

I nominate him to have a break out year in higher levels next season.

by Julio Nievas on Jul 22, 2010 9:44 AM PDT reply actions

According to Hugh he only has that plus fastball

but that was before he went on this current tear. I’d like to get an update to see if his secondary pitches are now being more consistent or is his fastball simply overwhelming the A level hitters.

groundball rates

he also gets more groundballs then our other top pitching prospects.

by npurcell on Jul 22, 2010 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

wow

this guy is a very good prospect then GB plus Ks plus Heat… what else would you want with your pitcher?

maybe a lil better control but hes great and possibly top 3 by the end of the year

by matthewmafa on Jul 22, 2010 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

#3

That’s a touch list to crack. It’s not that he wouldn’t be good enough to be someone else’s #3, it’s more a reflection of the potential we already have ahead of him.

Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.

by G.Scott on Jul 22, 2010 10:12 AM PDT up reply actions

potential is the key word

Rubby is producing. Others in front of him are not (which is annoying in itself).

by npurcell on Jul 22, 2010 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions

secondary pitches

I would like scouting reports of those please!

by npurcell on Jul 22, 2010 10:12 AM PDT up reply actions

He's also only made five starts

so we don’t know if he can keep up these peripherals as he adds innings to the his arm. I would not be moving him above those who have thrown twice as many innings.

Don’t agree with Brandon having Gould 2nd but that is why we makes this lists.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Jul 22, 2010 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think Gould deserves to be #2, but his rankings seem to value youth over a lot of other things.

Our minor league hitters are on a tear. Let’s hope that keeps up.

by w0nderbrad on Jul 22, 2010 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions

Our depth would sure look a lot better if we could get our picks signed.
