Phineas and Ferb night tonight
from the Dodgers:
Phineas and Ferb will be on hand before the game and will serve as the honorary bat boys, the show’s creators, Dan Povenmire and Swampy Marsh, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and actress Caitlyn Taylor Love of Disney XD’s "I’m In the Band" will perform the National Anthem and sing God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch

It’s a top-rated cartoon series on the Disney channel. It’s pretty funny for a show aimed at kids.

Cody Ross Thoughts
Good man to get us from now to Sandman, Lambo, or Trayvon. He is one of those strange birds who bats right and throws left, which I why I thought he was a switch hitter when I first saw him facing a LHP. He’s got a good arm, can play every outfield position. Has a lifetime .947 OPS against LHP, might be the perfect platoon for Paul.

i just find it annoying that
if colletti does acquire him, we’re probably going to give up more for him then what we received for him a couple of years ago.
REPKO
knocked out Furcal and sent Ross to the Reds. He killed us, or I’m probably remembering this wrong, but I know we had to waive Ross because of a Roster crunch. Wouldn’t be the first time Ned went with the wrong outfielder.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Basically we had to chose between Werth, Ross, and Repko. Keep in mind not choosing Repko meant sending him to the minors.

I wasnt a big fan of letting them out of their LOI’s because that really isnt a punishment. Shirley will go up to UW, which is a beautiful school, and compete to start immediately with zero repercussions. I would have preferred something like a 6 game suspension which keeps them in school, but is also a hell of a lot more significant than being granted a free pass to get recruited again.
Shirley also felt that he was a victim in this whole thing. The dude was a lookout while the idiot cousins stole something from another student. Man up and take your punishment instead of pouting and looking for sympathy. The whole thing is just ridiculous, and just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
by UCLADodger32 on Jul 22, 2010 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions
it really does
Neuheisel was making a statement that he’s running a clean program, and while I commend him for it, this hurts UCLA more than the kids. Like you said, this is hardly a punishment at all for Shirley. We’ll see how the Richardson’s case ends up – i get the sense that they’re more committed to ending up at UCLA in the end. They committed to the school itself, while i think Shirley committed to Neuheisel.
Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?
by bucknellbruin on Jul 22, 2010 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions
I just wonder how much of the punishment came from Neu and how much came from the admin. The richardson’s might come back, and that would be a big step for them. I doubt they will, but it would show something that they just didnt run away. they probably were going to redshirt anyways, so it doesnt cost them a ton in terms of pt this year (although they will be a year behind).
by UCLADodger32 on Jul 22, 2010 4:45 PM PDT up reply actions
one big key
is that the Richardsons would’ve both redshirted almost for sure, while Shirley is capable right now of playing in college. I don’t think UCLA would’ve redshirted him, and I bet Washington won’t either. So the Richardsons can come back last year without really losing any time.
Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?
by bucknellbruin on Jul 22, 2010 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions
They would lose a year being on the scout team and just working out with the team. Shirley didnt want to swallow the one year, and really, I cant blame him. As an 18 year old, he thought that the punishment was excessive and that he had a chance to get early playing time at a school he heavily considered. I probably would have made the same choice, but i would take the opposite view as a parent or person giving guidance. Take your medicine for your crime and honor your commitment.

Yeah I do the HTML myself here because I like the layout.

More on Thole per Baseball HQ
Mets say Thole to get more playing time
In a surprise move late Tuesday, the Mets cleared roster space for Oliver Perez (LHP, NYM) by demoting Justin Turner (2B, NYM) and keeping 23 year-old Josh Thole (C, NYM). Mets manager Jerry Manuel indicated immediately, “If we’re going to keep him, we have to play him more.” Thole hit his first major league home run on Tuesday night and has been on fire at the plate, hitting .500 in 24 AB since his June 25 callup. What can we expect from him going forward?
Clearly, Thole won’t continue his current 55% hit rate, but along with good luck, he has displayed excellent plate skills in his small major league sample size, with an 88% contact rate, a 1.33 batting eye, and a .317 xBA. He has a history of hitting for a solid average. In 53 AB for the Mets last season, he hit .321, and he’s a career .291 hitter in the minors. He should continue to hit for average. What Thole won’t do is hit for much power. His current league-average PX is the result of the small sample size, as his MLE PX last season was only 61, and his career high for homers in a season is five. He may struggle some on defense, as he is relatively new to the catcher position and is still learning.
Thole’s increased playing time will come at the expense of Rod Barajas (C, NYM). Barajas put on a power display with 11 home runs in April and May, but he has struggled mightily in June and July. He has no homers in his last 93 AB, and he has hit only .135 with a PX of 17 in the past month. His 17% hit rate promises some improvement, but his xBA of .150 for the past month and .234 for the season say not to expect much. Obviously, the playing time apportionment between Barajas and Thole will be a developing arrangment.

People from Minnesota do talk like that.
We drove across the country in 1996, just after seeing the movie “Fargo.” We got to Minneapolis late and went to a bar to eat. But we couldn’t get service.
Finally, we caught a waitress’s eye and asked if we could order. she said, in a heavy Minnesota accent, “Oh ya, sure. We’re all just super excited cause the Olympic torch is about to pass by donchaknow. So we’re all outside. But ya sure, I’ll take your order.”

B. J. Hunnicutt for McDonald?
Could have Honeycutt and Hunnicutt on the coaching staff.
BTW, did you know that Rick’s full first name isn’t Richard, it’s Frederick? I did not know that.

Is Upton really worth the cost? He had one great year, but he seems pretty average now.
by robotmadeofnails on Jul 22, 2010 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah I agree
Rays have a better CF in AAA in Desmond Jennings who won’t cost anything near what BJ will make in arbitration. does anyone know how much he will make next year?
by SeanMillerSavior on Jul 22, 2010 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Desmond Jennings 10/30/86 – no major league time
BJ Upton 8/21/1984 – 2159 plate appearances
HIs next 2,000 plate appearances are going to be much much better then his first 2000 plate appearances.
Desmond Jennings is going to be a roto star with his stolen bases, but will he be any better the BJ Upton? I doubt it.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Plus Desmond
has been hurt quite a bit in his minor league career.

Atfer Upton's breakout 2007 season
He’s been a pretty huge dissapointment in TB. . . Over the past 2 years hes put up 800 Ab’s of .238 avg, with around a .315 OBP and .700 OPS. Only time will tell I guess, but I don’t really agree with the:

Had something long typed out and then i saw your post which is basically the same thing. I love Upton’s walk rate, but a .700 OPS over 1000 at bats is pretty brutal for a guy with his natural ability.
by UCLADodger32 on Jul 22, 2010 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes
his wOBA is right on par with Matt Kemp, and just like Kemp he has the skills to explode. Your paying for upside which is far better then settling for Cody Ross. JMO

After the fued in the dugout...
and knowing they had Jennings, I began to have thoughts about him in Dodger blue, but not until next year. Getting him now would be amazing.

might be a real “change of scenery” guy. and I think I’d rather had him than Ross, though i got nothing against Cody.

Jeff Francoeur wants out
via beat writer Andy Martino:
"If there was an opportunity to play more somewhere else, that would be great," Francoeur said. "I love it here, but if they decide to go in a different direction, I would be happy to play somewhere else."
The emergence of Angel Pagan this season as one of the team’s best players, combined with the recent return of Carlos Beltran from offseason knee surgery, has severely limited Francoeur’s playing time. Jason Bay, in the first season of a four-year, $66 million contract, will remain in the starting lineup.
"I see the way things are going," Franceour said. "I see that certain guys have to play. I love it here, but I love to play."

Translates as: I don’t love it here. For the love of everything holy, please get me out of this deep, dark, stinking hole.
I see the way things are going. I see that certain guys have to play. I love it here, but I love to play.
They have chosen other people over me. Do they not realize I am the great Francoeur?! I shall zap them with my zap-ray eyes! Zap! Zap! Zap! ….did it work? No? Fuck.

Jamie Moyer may have to go under the knife.
Does he need a little more time to recover, because of his age?
If so, he should be back in the Phillies rotation by the time he’s 54?
Thought he was chasing 300 wins?

TJax up with Dodger trades story
Pitchers, Upton, and this:
The Dodgers probably are unlikely to trade either of their top two pitching prospects, right-handers Chris Withrow and Ethan Martin, or their top position prospect, shortstop Dee Gordon….Those are far from the only Dodgers prospects likely to draw interest from other clubs. Lefty Aaron Miller, their first pick in last year’s draft, is a hot commodity, as are right-handers Nate Eovaldi, Allen Webster, Elisaul Pimentel and Rubby De La Rosa along with outfielders Kyle Russell, Jerry Sands and Blake Smith.

Dodger attendance last year was 3.11 million, not 3.76 million
per Bill Shaikin:
However, the court filing revealed the Dodgers’ turnstile count last year was 3.11 million, the high in the McCourt era. The Dodgers exceeded that figure seven times from 1978-91, including four consecutive years from 1982-85, before the NL clubs started counting unused tickets in their attendance.
