TBLA Roy Oswalt Trade Game
For fun, because you all love these games. Let us say Ned really is talking to the Astros, what would it take to get him. Now I'm not looking for what you think we should trade for him, I want you to guess what Ned will do. The closest to being right, gets a free ticket to TBLA Night on Aug 7th.
You need to consider the Astros needs and what we have. Brandon has pretty much given us the lowdown on every single prospect in the system.
1st - Berkman - free agent
2nd - help
SS - help
3rd - help
With the immovable contract of Carlos Lee, Bourne/Broug.../Pence they have an outfield but they might start moving them.
SP - Help
RP - Help
The Astros need everything. If they are smart they will pay the remaining salary to get as many prospects as possible.
Over the last 20 years Roy Oswalt has been one of the best six foot and under starting pitchers in baseball.

Copying this from another thread--God that's tacky
I don’t think I want to trade our prospects at all, but here’s my best guess at what a reasonable offer for Oswalt might be (I’m not advocating a move, mind you):
1. Withrow
2. Gordon
3. Webster
4. Ely
Yeah, it’s a lot. But we’re not going to get him cheap. You need a centerpiece, and E. Martin isn’t quite a centerpiece. (I’m leaving Sands off on principle.) Oswalt would have to quiet the option year talk and pass a physical.
I just think that's way too much
Idk, I hope I’m right and Ned won’t consider it.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
What Ned would trade
Withrow
DeJesus
Robinson
Miller
I think they really like Gordon and would like to hold onto him if at all possible.
1st – Sands – sell 27 home runs so far
SS – Gordon – sell 37 stolen bases so far
SP – Buddy De La Rosa – sell 100 MPH
SP – John Ely – sell great may
SP – Elisual Pimentel
Astro’s pay his salary for 2010
Dodgers on the hook for 2011
Dodgers guarantee his 2012 contract, but Houston pays 4,000,000 of it.
Alright, let's try this
Gordon
E. Martin
Rubby De La Rosa (kinda stole Phil’s idea here)
Ivan De Jesus
Kyle Russell (home state guy)
The Astros eat half the remaining salary.
That’s my offer for Oswalt and I’m sticking to it.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
My guess is neither Gordon or Withrow included
but since the Astros need a lot of prospects and we can’t take on salary:
Sands or Garcia
A. Miller
J. Ely
J. McDonald
Rubby
DeJesus
Three team deal
TB gets: Berkman, James McDonald, Aaron Miller, Carl Webster
LAD gets: Oswalt, BJ Upton
Astros get: Wade Davis, Tim Beckham, matt Moore, Dee Gordon, John Ely, Rubby De La Rosa,Chris Withrow
Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.
Wow, that really cleans us out but bringing in Oswalt and Upton would be awesome. I would think that TB may want Bourne instead of one of our minor league pitchers.
i thought that too
but assumed houston would want to hang onto him. besides, cleaning us out is in ned’s job description. hell, i think he gets performance bonuses based on how many top prospects we no longer have to pay.
Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.
I really like this offer (though it would suck losing so much minor league talent)
but would they really trade for 2 SS prospects? I guess one could shift to 2b.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Holy fuck
You just shot me 4 times with a Desert Eagle. Rubby, Withrow, Miller, and Webby???
by Julio Nievas on Jul 23, 2010 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Are we happy with this deal???
Losing Gordon is the most painful second would be Miller..
But we are getting a nice reward. If a chuck of Oswalts contract is eaten up in this deal we have upgraded and added an “ACE?” and a hopefully bounce back OF to take Manny’s spot… I say I’m pro deal.
I think it's the perfect deal
It’s the deal where no one is happy and everyone gets what they want.

Not that we really have any pieces to move with all of the injuries
but I’ve been hoping all week to see some trade rumor where we are selling rather than buying. So sick of seeing our best prospects go in some bad trade because we can’t take on salary. Its not like in the next couple of years we can expect to plug holes with big FA signings.
I guess at least with Oswalt, he’s not just a rental.
Well you know he’s going to break our heart whatever he does, but it’s won’t be Gordon or Withrow, so I’ll say DeJesus, Martin, Robinson, and Webster.
by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 23, 2010 1:48 PM PDT reply actions
is anyone gonna post a Greinke proposal?
or is it just “here’s a list, pick some names.”
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 23, 2010 1:51 PM PDT reply actions
I’d give up any 5 prospects except:
Sands
Withrow or Webster (one or the other, both can’t go)
Garcia
Jansen
So any of Martin, Gordon, Pimental, Eovaldi, Magill, Dejesus, Van Slyke, Russell, Rubby, Mcdonald, Elbert, Blake Smith (though I really do like him), etc…
Any 5 of those players I would trade for Greinke.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Then we probably wouldn't get him
From what I understand. If you want Greinke you don’t get to say no.
I see the point
Fine, take Withrow AND Webster just don’t take Sands, Garcia, or Jansen, haha.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Oswalt and Lindstrom
For Withrow, St. Caire, DeJesus, Sands, and Robinson. Houston pays the bill.
I know.. painful. But we get pen help and one of the better pitchers in the NL for prospects. Then…
J-Mac, Lambo, Jansen for Upton.
..damn, Im glad Im not a GM
Just made the mistake of looking at Rosenthal
He seems actually angry that the Dodgers didn’t trade for Lee. I can imagine his little hands shaking.
by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 23, 2010 1:58 PM PDT reply actions
No doubt in my mind are the Dodgers showcasing Rubby with this move. Maybe the Astros’ scouts asked. With that said here is my proposal:
Withrow
Gordon
Rubby
Robinson
Russell
Wallach
Astros chew up most of Oswalt’s salary.
Everyone is happy.
Who the hell is happy trading all those players for just Oswalt
Screw that, that’s something I would want to trade for Greinke (though we pick up his entire contract).
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Sorry, that just looks like so much for Oswalt
Who I do like, but jeez, he’s wouldn’t even be the top pitcher on the team, while Greinke and Haren likely would.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Wait a minute
We have Oswalt for a year and half, or two and a half?

Team, but rumors are circulating that he demand the team that acquires him pick up the $16mm option for 2012 (he has veto rights).
Full no trade clause. He is outlining the condition by which he is willing to waive it.
by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Not at all. I’d do the same thing. Everyone with a no trade clause basically demands an extension or option pick up.
The term “demands” is what set it off..

I can only imagine what you would have thought of Sheffield
and what he did when he was traded here.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
True
even more important for Oswalt, he could easily break down between now and the end of 2011 and lose out on 16 Million if he doesn’t make this demand. He’s a pitcher with a history of back problems, if he can demand his option being picked up he has to do it.
Sheffield was just a dick.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
3 years total (with 2 of them options I believe)
This is the last year without an option on his deal from what I’ve heard.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Oswalt is signed through 2011, with a $16 million option for 2012. He will require that option be picked up to approve any trade
by Eric Stephen on Jul 23, 2010 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Player A

Player B
http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=smoak-001jus
Player B played in the more offensive minded Texas League in AA at the same exact age. Then he was promoted to the offensive minded PCL and kind of sucked.
Given what Sands is doing in AA I’d say the odds are good he’d outhit what Smoak did in AAA at the same age.
Just saying

Bring the Physical Therapists and Rehab speciallsts with him ...
2008:
July 3-11 strained abductor
July 19 15 day DL, hip injury
2009:
Aug 2, strained lower back, day to day
Aug 11, missed 12 games, strained lower back
Sept 16, 15 day DL, lower back pain
So far 2010 has been kind to him, but it’s just the beginning of late July and August is just around the corner.
Hey, maybe he’ll be injury free.
Nice contract he’s got though.
Wonder how Schmidt’s bank is doing these days?
Shouldn’t give up the farm for him, that’s for sure.
Who are people's untouchables right now? (Or have we had this discussion?)
For Greinke, I’d have very few untouchables. For Oswalt, I’d have maybe a few more.
I just mean guys you really, really don’t want the Dodgers to give up.
For me it’s a pretty small list at this point, but Sands, Miller, De La Rosa and Withrow may be about it. Webster and Jansen are ones I’d like to keep, too. But again, you can’t hold on to everyone IF we’re talking about blue chip trade return (rather than B grade veteran pitcher).

As a GM, for Grienke the vault is open, I don’t even want Oswalt. I’d open the vault for Haren,
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I would like Granick
then Haren.
Oswalt is a distant 3rd.
Sands and Jansen are untouchable in any deal involving Oswalt.
Sands not available for Haren deal.
Grienke deal would leave everyone in the Minors available.
Who says Greinke is available
Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our "Die-hard Night" here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Dodgers won a pennant.
there was a report in the NYT
it may or may not be true, but it basically said that the Royals will listen to offers for anyone on the team, including Grienke. Though obviously they have to be blown away. “Atomic” was the word used.
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 23, 2010 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions
If offered enough
I would believe that almost anyone is available.
KC has shown a certain desire in the past to move players for prospects. I would
think if we offered enough, Grienke would be available too.
I'd say keep Sands, Withrow, and Jansen
for Oswalt.
For Grienke, no untouchables. I really would like to keep Sands though.
My only concerns about Greinke is how he will react playing meaningful games in a bigger market. He did get national exposure from his Cy Young campaign, but he was still pitching on a last place team.

Greinke and Upton
Assuming we don’t send anybody on 25 man of consequence, means winning the division by 2 games.
by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions
We contend, maybe we get in the playoffs. That’s probably a 3-4 win improvement right there assuming Manny doesn’t come back. That puts us somewhere in the 88-90 win range which may or may not win the division.
by regfairfield on Jul 23, 2010 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions
Does BJ Upton do anything?
He’s hitting .230/.319/.394 and he’ll be facing much better pitching and tougher ballparks in the NL West.
he might just need a change of scenery, but the concern is valid.
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 23, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions
He’s got 2,216 career MLB ABs.
.261/.347/.408….I dont see much value in him as an OF’er.
Its too bad his defense was so bad he couldnt stick in the infield, bc his bat is too anemic to make him worth his salary.
The key to Upton would be if he is cheap in terms of prospects.
by robotmadeofnails on Jul 23, 2010 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm a firm believer that once you display a skill you own it
in 2007 Upton owned power and patience, his quick bat is not a figment. Many were ready to write off Chris Young, that is all-star Chris Young. I think any team that ends up gambling on Upton could really get a pay off. JMO
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Exactly. If he can be had for a reasonable cost, it is worth the potential upside. Think about how many teams wish they had not given up on certain players. We could finally benefit on a team giving up on someone.
by robotmadeofnails on Jul 23, 2010 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions
He’s a decent defensive centerfielder, which makes him more valuable than Carroll or Paul. It’s not gonna be a huge improvement, but it’s better than nothing.

Sherrill isn’t going anywhere. Torre has so much love for him it makes me wanna vomit. I think he will take Monk’s spot of watching from the bullpen doing nothing.
Usually the regime is good at recognizing sunk costs…
But Sherrill’s 6mils must just be killing them too much to give in.
This is why I wish we had something closer to the NFL. I know little about it, but it would be nice to cut people, owing them a percentage of their contract if they just stink. Injuries would be covered/protected…but man, must be nice to have a union that guarantees your contract even if you suck.

Oswalt Deal
Oswalt and Berkman for Dewitt, Sands, Elbert, E. Martin, A. Miller, Cole St. Clair and Sherrill.
Blake Dewitt (2nd/3rd baseman) the perfect major league ready player Houston wants that can play at two positions they need. In Houston I see Dewitt hitting .290 with 8-12HRs and around 70RBIs on average seasons. Perhaps more power…
Jerry Sands [2nd in HR in the minors(27), 22 years old;OF/1B] power is unquestionable; I see shades of Adam Dunn with slight less power but better defense and better speed
Scott Elbert (1/2 starter potential but kick-ass power lefty reliever is more likely)- Elbert isn’t happy with the Dodgers not giving him a chance to prove himself in the majors. Houston provides a perfect oppurtunity for him to flourish. Hispitching talent/potential might be the best in the Dodger organization.
Ethan Martin (1/2 starter) 2nd best SP prospect in the organization behind Withrow despite his rocky season. Brett Myers type upside and downside…
Aaron Miller (2/3 starter) His stuffs’ potential isn’t as good as E. Martins but he hasn’t faultered at any point thus far.
Cole St. Clair (Lefty Reliever) Houston native and a great closers arm out of Rice.
Those 6 prospects and George Sherrill (offsets a little salary for this year and the slight chance he rebounds and regains has some trade value come the offseason. If not he can be nontendered)
Houston pays 2M of Oswalt’s contract this year, 6M next year and the rest of Berkman’s contract. Neither option is picked up prior to the deal. If they want to win they’ll do it. Berkman’s option is done-zo if he stays and has no chance of winning. Oswalts op with probably be picked up by the Dodgers later and rotting in Houston waiting for them to not pick it up is just dumb.
Berkman becomes our new LF and Oswalt our new ace. Maybe the Dodgers trade for Scott Downs as well and then its off to the races!!!
As an Astros fan
The first thing that stands out is that this looks like too much for Oswalt and Berkman. I mean, I’d love to get that much back, but I have a hard time seeing the Dodgers giving up that much. I guess you’d know better than I would though.
I’m sure they’d also want Dee Gordon more than one, maybe even two, of Elbert, Martin, and Miller. They’ll probably ask for Gordon in any deal, but I don’t know if he’s considered untouchable or not.
I also don’t know whether Berkman can play LF anymore. He doesn’t have the footspeed he used to. Then again, I don’t know if he can be worse than Manny in the outfield… but still.
Reasoning
Well I put so much in there because the Astros would be paying around 10-12M over two years. The Dodgers don’t have much to spend and are prone to giving up more in order for the other party to pay most if not all of the salary (ex: Blake, Manny, Sherrill)
If they insisted on Gordon then I’d say fine but then no Sands, Miller and St Clair. Gordon is our top prospect and Gordon, Dewitt, Elbert and Martin is still a decent haul for the Stros ace and their fading Berkman.
Yeah, there aren’t many LFers worse than Manny and its Berk’s bat we need. Once Manny comes back he and Berk can split time in LF and Berk can sub for Loney here and there plus PH. It’d be a good problem to have.
A rotation of Kershaw, Oswalt, Billingsley, Kuroda and Padilla seems too good to pass up. It needs to happen
