Dodgers Wheel Of Fifth Starters Stops On Monasterios Today
In game three of their four-game series with the Mets, the Dodgers turn to Carlos Monasterios to start, a role he has struggled in this season:
| Carlos Monasterios Rookie Season | |||||||||
| Split | G | IP | HR/9 | BB/9 | K/9 | ERA | FIP | xFIP | WHIP |
| Starter | 6 | 26.2 | 2.36 | 3.71 | 3.38 | 5.40 | 7.23 | 6.18 | 1.500 |
| Reliever |
14 | 25.2 | 0.70 | 2.45 | 4.91 | 1.75 | 4.08 | 4.61 | 1.091 |
In his last two starts, in June, Monasterios allowed 10 runs and 20 baserunners, including three home runs, in 6 2/3 innings. He was placed on the disabled list after his June 23 start in Boston with blisters on his fingers, blisters Monasterios himself said did not affect his performance. For the Dodgers sake, I hope he was wrong. Since returning from the disabled list, Monasterios has allowed one run in six innings in relief.
A month ago, Mike Pelfrey was 10-2 with a 2.71 ERA. Since then, he has made four starts, and is 0-3 with a 12.89 ERA. He has allowed a staggering 40 hits and 10 walks in just 14 2/3 innings. Opponents have tagged Pelfrey in those four starts to the tune of .519/.580/.688, although his batting average on balls in play is .565. Then again, his line drive rate during that time is a giant 33%.
Notes
- The Dodgers have been outscored 72-53 in first innings this season, their worst frame of the season
- Andre Ethier leads the Dodgers in home runs since the All-Star break, with two, but during that same time he has just four hits in 33 at-bats. Ethier is hitless in his last 14 at-bats
- Garret Anderson has four hits, including a double, in nine at-bats in his career against Pelfrey, with a walk and two sacrifice flies, hitting .444/.417/.556
- Monasterios faced the Mets earlier this season in relief, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing only a hit to Luis Castillo
- The Dodgers are 2-4 on Fox this season

Elliott in the LAT this morning
Colletti’s priorities are adding stability to the back end of the rotation, help for the bullpen, and outfield depth because Manny Ramirez’s calf strain and Reed Johnson’s back problem have lingered.
If true, sounds more like Maholm than Oswalt to me.

Peter Gammons keeps on thinking the Dodgers will have a firesale in the off season due to the divorce.
And that they'll sell to his beloved Red Sox.

Gammons
I think that east coast flack has drain bamage.
The MLBTR version of that NedCo/LAT story
(Colletti More Willing To Move Prospects http://bit.ly/czwZKt )
mentions Scott Elbert as an “interesting arm” they could trade. Um, really?
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
It also mentions Lindblom. Best guess is that he looked at a pre-season list of prospects and picked a couple names at random.
hahaha i was just about to mention this
hopefully every GM in the league considers them to be our “interesting” arms. Take those 2 and leave us with the younger kids.
Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

With that slump this isn’t even the best season of Ethier’s career anymore. Didn’t think I’d be saying that pre finger injury.
It still is. Park factors in 2010 compared to 2008 has Dodgers Stadium leaning much towards a pitcher’s park.
2008: multi-year: Batting – 98, Pitching – 97 · one-year: Batting – 96, Pitching – 95
2009: multi-year: Batting – 95, Pitching – 94 · one-year: Batting – 95, Pitching – 93
2010: multi-year: Batting – 95, Pitching – 94 · one-year: Batting – 95, Pitching – 93
Obviously, it can and will change after the season when park factors are re calibrated but Ethier’s still doing it in a ‘tougher’ park this year.
Nope. I have no idea how it became the go to stat without them.

Interesting note from ESPN Mag
in 2004 Rangers had a choice in ARod trade. Joaquin Arias or Robinson Cano. Fail.
@soyboquense
They did okay with Teixeira though
to make up for it.

OT: I think its rich that current NBA writers are ketchving about Chris Paul, and LeBron, Wade, Bosh this off season.
When Jerry West already did something similar with Kobe and Shaq. Kobe himself forced the Hornets to trade him to the Lakers.
Lets not act like Kobe wouldn’t smell the rings and do something similar, he has already.
When Shaq came to the Lakers
you think a 17 year old equates Wade, Bosch? We gave up our starting Center to get Kobe. We had Nick, E Jones, Campbell, as the core that Shaq joined. Did Shaq think he was joining a team of all-stars that along with a 17 year old was going to equate to easy titles. I don’t think they are even close to what happened this summer. How many HS players had been successful when Kobe joined the league? Garnett as a big man, no guards, ever. What West did was a crap shoot that turned to gold.

I don't get how a 17 year old high schooler
is held to the same standards as Lebron, Bosh and Wade in their primes. No one knew if Kobe was going to be great, no HS guard had ever been successful jumping straight to the NBA.
Also Kobe didn’t force a trade to the Lakers, he just didn’t want to play for the Hornets. The Lakers gave the Hornets the best deal, so that’s where he went. Kobe could’ve easily ended up in New York, Dallas, Denver, etc.

Exactly, Tripon is trying to grasp something that does not exist.
Many players have decided to play for a title but they have never been the best player in the league. Shaq is close but the Laker lineup when he joined was not exactly a hotbed of talent and as every Laker fan knows it was not until Kobe started to grow up that they won the titles.
What LeBron, Wade, and Bosch have done is unprecedented and going to be very interesting. Usually the best laid plans rarely work out. An injury is probably awaiting one of the trifecta.

Andre sure has been blah
since May.
June OPS of .613
July OPS of .817
Amazing how high is OPS must have been to be still carrying an .893 for the season.
Odds that Furcal would have the highest OPS among the non Manny starters on July 24th while having 300 plus at bats?

Tough break for Met's
Maine will miss the rest of the season after undergoin arthroscopic surgery Friday to clean out scar tissue in his right shoulder, the New York Daily News’ Andy Martino reports. The last we heard from Maine he was close to beginning a throwing program, so this news comes a bit out of the blue. He’s expected to be ready for spring training, though his Mets career could be finished.

Isn't he cute?
Greinke specifically mentioned “FIP” (fielding independent pitching), an indicator developed by sabermetrician Tom Tango, as his favorite statistic. “That’s pretty much how I pitch, to try to keep my FIP as low as possible.”9
Trying to find his contract. There was this SWEET website we used to use back when I was a tester…I’ll see if I can track it down.

Dodgers won’t be trading for Ben Sheets.

the year they traded for Finley was the craziest
I was getting on a plane and had to leave for the airport right at 1. This was before internet on my phone, so when I left and nothing had been reported I assumed no moves had been made. I then landed on the east coast that night and found out about the trade. Needless to say i was a bit surprised.

Well, the big move (Penny/Choi for LoDuca/Mota/Encarnacion) was a few days before the deadline.
They almost got Randy Johnson in the Finley deal, but we wouldn’t have Bills right now if that happened.

yeah i meant besides the Florida one
because leading up to the deadline RJ was the headliner that I was pretty much expecting to get. Finley was the extra piece
