Dodgers Week 16 In Review: The Start Of The Kenley Jansen Experience
I could talk about how the Dodgers rebounded from a six-game losing streak to win four of their last five games. I could worry about the fact that the Dodgers have a .286 on-base percentage with 25 runs in 11 games since the All-Star break. I could wax poetic about how great the starting pitching has been. All of these things are relevant to the story of week 16 for the Dodgers, but this week will be remembered as the first time we saw Kenley Jansen in a Dodger uniform.
Jansen was converted from catcher to pitcher almost exactly one year ago, so his meteoric rise through the Dodger system has been amazing. He made his major league debut on Saturday, pitching a perfect seventh inning with two strikeouts through the heart of the Mets batting order. Then, one day later he picked up his first major league save, retiring the Mets in order again, with two more strikeouts.
He has faced six batters, and retired them all, striking out four. All aboard the Kenley Jansen bandwagon.
Dodger Batter of the Week: Matt Kemp had a nice week, hitting .400/.464/.600. He and Russell Martin were the only Dodgers to have an OPS of .800 for the week.
Dodger Pitcher of the Week: Any of the Dodgers top four starters, and maybe even Carlos Monasterios, could lay claim to this award in most weeks, but Chad Billingsley takes the cake with his second career shutout. On the week, Dodger starters had an ERA of 1.31 and averaged 6.86 innings per start.
Week 16 Record: 4-3
16 runs scored (2.29 per game)
20 runs allowed (2.86 per game)
.399 pythagorean winning percentage
Season Record: 53-46
448 runs scored (4.53 per game)
435 runs allowed (4.39 per game)
.513 pythagorean winning percentage (51-48)

wow
3 games were won this week by the dodgers in which only 1 playr had an RBI kemp casey blake and today russell martin
amazing
it would have been cooler if Martin had hit a two run home run so each of them would have driven in exactly two runs in each of the shutouts.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Not that I'm complaining
that was a huge hit by Russell.

But Ken Rumorthal says starting pitching should be Dodgers #1 priority!
He’s never wrong!*
(*Except 90% of the time.)

If they had more SP then could save the bullpen every night...
until it went into extras because the offense is too weak to score most times!
lol, jk, sort of.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
A little baseball terminology question
I’ve seen this a few other places too, that Jansen was “recalled” to the Dodgers. I find that an odd expression, since he was never here before. Was he already on the 40-man roster? Is that what it means? I would have thought “called up” was the expression for someone who’s never been up to the big league club before. (Sorry to be picky – just curious.)
I questioned that too. This is his first trip too the 25 man roster.
And yes, he was already on the 40 man roster.

The transactions
page on the Dodgers.com site uses both terms.
Los Angeles Dodgers called up Kenley Jansen from Chattanooga Lookouts.

Does that help?
Jansen was added to the 40-man roster in November
So he started spring training in big league camp. He was optioned to the minors during spring training.

Not sure it is that simple
The Yankees certainly would have no problem adding salary, reportedly they balked at a package that included Joba.
For the Dodgers, I am pretty sure the D-Backs asked for Billingsley, plus some pitching prospects, it makes sense considering that they were asking for MLB ready talent. It’s pretty clear that the Dodgers best prospects (starting pitching) are a few years away, so teams may not be willing to take an entire boatload of those types of players.
I am sure the Angels offered to pay all the salary plus give up someone who could take Haren’s place now and also given them a bullpen guy they could use now.
I don’t doubt the unsettled financial picture for the Dodgers hampers some deals, I just don’t think that was the reason why they did not make the deal with Arizona. I just don’t think they had the pieces or were unwilling to give them up to Arizona.
Exactly. Not fair to compare or have same expectations
Division rival was asking them for much more, period. Not that people who fire such salvos and the Plaschkes of the world let facts or logic get in the way of their rants.

Ely
7 ER, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K (89 pitches)
Very good effort. He’s either primed for another opportunity or becoming trade bait.
I’m guessing he didn’t give up 7 earned runs, or your second sentence is sarcastic :)
by Michael White on Jul 25, 2010 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions
It was 7IP
as reported by Jon Weisman on DT.
But to think Ely could be anymore than a third or fourth piece of a deal is probably wishful thinking on our part.
I believe you think much more highly of him
than any MLB executive who is going to deal someone who has any record of success in the big leagues.
The one thing we know about Ely, he needs to have his command in order to be successful, he doesn’t have the fastball or another swing and miss pitch in his repertoire to get guys out.
Actually, what is more likely to keep him on the team is the fact that no one else in AAA has had any success in starting in the MLB so the Dodgers will probably want him back in the picture for this season or in 2011.
I think he could be the centerpiece
for a relief pitcher, he was already the centerpiece of a deal for starting major league left fielder. Though I would think after seeing Jansen this weekend, Ned cools his heals for relief help while stepping up his efforts to get someone for the rotation.

or to rephrase
that we didn’t have to pay. Its arguing semantics, but I think its an important semantics.
six of one…yes the prime piece was us not having to pay all of the 19M/2yrs for our 4th outfielder. Though, I suppose it would have been interesting to see who we would have gotten instead had we paid the tab.
That being said, I couldn’t be happier with Ely and Link for a 4th outfielder.

Dodgers will face Mat Latos and Tim Lincecum back to back Thursday and Friday.
Padilla will face Latos.
Kershaw can face Lincecum on four days rest should Torre choose to do it. I certainly would look into doing that. Unless he already said something about it that I missed.
I asked Torre about that after the game
He was noncommittal about Friday/Saturday, but did mention Kershaw will be fine to go in his next start after his outing today. If I were a betting man, I would bet on Kershaw Friday and Monk (or new acquisition X) Saturday

Shutouts coming in bunches
The Dodgers have ten shutouts, three of them came in the 1st week of June, and three of them came during the week Eric just reviewed. 1- 0, 1- 0 , 12 – 0 , 2 – 0 , 2 – 0 , 1- 0.
You would think the 63-66 Dodgers probably had their share of 1 and 2 run shutouts.
We just need to get the bullpen in order, which has started with the awesome emergence of Jansen, but I would like to see Troncoso and Link called up to replace McDonald and Taschner.
Also, the offense really needs to pick it up. Not really sure what we can do about that until Manny comes back.
Ahh
you can’t give up on Jimmy Mac this soon. He can handle the bullpen.
As far as the offense goes, Andre simply needs to start hitting again. If he’s such a star he can’t be told to play LF then now would be a good time to prove he’s so good that no one should tell him where to play.
that's basically it
we really need the guys we have on the field to hit.
Although meercat, I really hope you don’t start building some animosity towards Ethier over moving to LF, as he’s probably never been asked so we don’t know if he wouldn’t do so.
by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 26, 2010 9:06 AM PDT up reply actions
I would tend to agree about McDonald but he really looks uncomfortable on the mound. I hate delving into appearances since it is used way too often to criticize Bills and Broxton but McDonald almost looks defeated as soon as he is called in. I agree he has the ability to be good in the pen, but I don’t know if he believes it.
being sent to the bullpen after one start might have contributed to that. I think he’ll shake himself out of it though. He’s gotta know the only way he may get another chance to start is to pitch well whenever he comes out.

consistency
i think we need to put our boys in a position to win. bouncing around j-mac, starter to long man messes with his head, similar to what happened down on the farm with the failed lindblom as a starter experiment. i think pick something and stick to it.
Does the D-backs underwhelming return for Haren affect the Oswalt negotiations at all? They really can’t expect a huge haul for Oswalt when he is older, more expensive, and not as good as Haren. I guess the difference would be how much salary someone is willing to take on.
The biggest hang-up for all three teams is the player haul that Houston wants back — a young, front-line player off the big-league roster, two high-end prospects and one more prospect. That’s a price none of these teams is prepared to pay. But don’t assume it’s a price that will get discounted any time soon, said one source who is tight with Astros owner Drayton McLane. McLane, the source said, “has a tightrope to walk.” He’s a man consumed by what his public thinks of him. So he can’t come out of this looking like he’s “cheap.” And he’s determined not to come out of this with his fans accusing him of not caring about winning. So “the key,” the source said, “is for Drayton to be able to brag about what he got in return.”
by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 26, 2010 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions
funny thing is
most of those fans are probably going to criticize him for being unrealistic. Still, even Oswalt isn’t traded by the deadline, I gotta think he’d clear waivers.

I would take two of Gibbons, Mitchell, and Lindsey right now and get rid of Anderson (DFA) and Belliard (trade).
Only reason we have Belliard in the first place is to keep Manny happy
so I don’t think trading him is going to happen. It’s not like he’s being used often enough for THAT roster spot to be hugely important. Now, the way we use GA everyday, I’d obviously like more production from that spot and would like to see what Russell could do.

If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press'll think you're colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob.

At least he wasn’t a blood sucking cheater.
But that guy Manny, he’s cool because he has dredlocks and can hit.

I think Gibbons has done enough in AAA to at least warrant a shot.

Gibbons is the most likely of the three to get called up, but I don’t think the organization is looking to do that just yet.

just out of curiousity
why Gibbons rather than Hoffman? Veteran?

Torre mentioned Gibbons and Lindsey by name. Said Lindsey can’t play the OF

This could be an interesting week for the Dodger roster from the sound of it.

Thought this was funny
on SB Nation, about the HOF cap selection process, just for this line:
Can this person admit that “Dodger Dogs” are not better than other ballpark hot dogs, because hot dogs are ultimately ground pig snouts and eye jelly, no matter what alliterative term one assigns to them?
No
because that’s the most untrue statement of all time. Gosh.
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
and BTW Mike
A RH cutter goes away from righties. I think a RH Screwball is supposed to come in on righties, which must be nearly impossible to do.
@soyboquense
Isn’t that called a two-seamer/sinker…coming up with pitches that do the same thing as current pitches is fun. I’m going to call my new pitch the Pushball. You hold it by your fingertips with the thumb underneath and as you go to release it, you keep your wrist straight and push with your fingers, thus providing no rotation on the ball. Yep, Pushball is the new thing.

Thursday Mets LH starter had a screwball. Different from that sinker it has a tight rotation that comes in at lefties. I was not thinking that a RH pitcher can throw something similar.
@soyboquense
It's all just pronation
doesn’t really matter what hand you throw from. I threw a version of it in college from the right side and it worked, I just didn’t throw quite hard enough to get noticed. I am, however, able to say that I threw as hard as Ely, just without the sick control and changeup.

Didn't Juan Marichal
have a screwball?

didn't you say the Gyroball was fantasy?
I’m not disbelieving you, I just can’t remember if it was you who said that.

Darvish has a pitch that Dice-K does not have. I am not sure what the hell it is. I do think Dice-K’s gyroball was fantasy.
Just providing a video there to curious viewers.
@soyboquense
I'll gladly watch it when i get home.
Darvish is pretty awesome. If they post him, they’re gonna make a lot of money.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH
I hate weekly leagues. Hate them. I always remember monday morning to set my roster, but even though no games have been played yet it won’t let me touch it. ANGER.
yes
You can only set your roster once a week, and it has to be done before at least 8am monday morning. It means I don’t have to babysit my team every day, but it is a recipe for rage.
Primal Rage?
(i have no pic for that…)

Rockies playing themselves out of contention?
atleast for the NL West title they are. What a terrible road trip they are having and they are losing again today. They do get Tulo back shortly, but with Jimenez regressing heavily it might not matter. They are going to need another one of those 23 out of 24 streaks again.
We’re like 6 runs against away from being 9 out. Things change SO quickly. One hot streak or cold streak in April could make or break your season. One hot or cold streak in late July will almost certainly make or break your season.

Will the Rockies compete with Jim Tracy at the helm? Hard to bet against them.
Were they maybe overrated? That’s possible. Have the injuries hurt? Think they have, but they need to play better. /jimtracy, off

Dan Haren
does AZ trading away Haren and Conor Jackson, with rumors of dealing Edwin Jackson to Washington in a three team deal with the White Sox for prospects signal they are in full rebuild mode? Or is it simply them trading their high salary guys?
Namely, does this signal the end of the DBacks as we know them and is there anyone on that roster we may be able to poach? (I’m looking at you Mark Reynolds and Stephen Drew)

Top of 9th, 5-2 Phillies. Two out. Seth Smith hits 2-run homer. 5-4 Phillies. Lidge then walks the next batter, then allows CarGo to single. 1st and 2nd on. Walks Giambi intenionally, bases loaded. Spillborgjhs up (idential BA to Giambi.)
