7/26/10 Minor League Report – Dodgers get First No Hitter of the Year

The Dodgers minor league system got their first no-hitter of the year, and it came from an unlikely source.  And it actually didn't even happen on Monday.  Unless I missed it somewhere, everyone seemed to miss that the Dominican Dodgers combined to no hit the Mets on Sunday.

Also, congrats to the Ogden Raptors for clinching the first half division title and a playoff spot with their win on Monday.

AAA – Starter Alberto Bastardo got blasted for 8 runs in just 1.1 innings on Monday as the Isotopes lost to Nashville 12 to 6.  Each member of the bullpen that followed Bastardo also allowed at least one run, although Josh Lindblom actually did OK as he gave up just 1 run in 3 innings of work.  Despite the loss, Albuquerque did well at the plate as they picked up 13 hits in the game.  Lucas May and Russell Mitchell each had 2 hits including a double, while Trent Oeltjen went 3 for 5 with a pair of 2 baggers.  Jay Gibbons also had 2 RBI’s to give him 75 for the season.

AA – Postponed

High A – Off day

ABrian Cavazos-Galvez really is on fire.  BCG extended his hitting streak to 24 games with 2 run homer in the 2nd inning, then for good measure added a solo shot in the 7th in the Loons 5 to 0 win.  Obviously Brian isn’t showing any ill effects from breaking a bat over his leg on Sunday.  Besides Cavazos-Galvez, there really wasn’t much offense besides Jaime Ortiz who went 2 for 3.  On the mound, Brett Wallach put together a very impressive performance with 6 shutout innings.  Wallach, who improved to 6-0 for the season, allowed 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5.  Jordan Roberts followed in relief and threw 3 perfect innings to close out the game.

Rookie Ogden – Red Patterson threw his 5th straight game in which he allowed 1 earned run or less and picked up the win for Ogden on Monday night.  Patterson gave up just 3 hits and struck out 5 over 6 innings.  Logan Bamcow and Ji-Mo Lee combined for 3 impressive innings of 1 hit ball to close out the game.  Several Raptor players had big games at the plate, including Nick Akins who had 3 extra base hits and 4 RBI’s.  Akins actually had the chance to hit for the cycle in the 8th needing just a single, but he ended up walking.  Bobby Coyle also homered in this game, and freshly named Pioneer League offensive player of the week Jake Lemmerman stayed hot with 3 hits in 5 at bats.

Rookie Arizona – This was an all around boring game in terms of prospects.  Like they did 3 days ago, rehabbing pitchers Tim Corcoran and Javy Guerra started off the game, and they actually performed very well going 3 combined innings with 5 K’s.  Gustavo Gomez picked up in relief and lost the game, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs in 3 innings.  Tony Delmonico continued his rehab with a 1 for 4 effort, and no other players stood out on offense.

DSL – First of all, I think it is important to mention that the Dominican Dodgers threw a no-hitter last night.  I forgot to mention it in the comments of Phil’s post, but Daniel Tamares (6 innings) and 17 year old Abdiel Velasquez (3 innings) combined for 9 innings of no hit ball.  Each pitcher allowed one walk, and they combined for 8 strikeouts.  Congrats to the team for the accomplishment.  In today’s game, the Dodgers got another great pitching performance and came away with a 4 to 1 win.  Leonel Beras threw 5 innings in which he allowed just 3 hits and an unearned run.  Two relievers combined for 4 innings of shutout relief to preserve the win.  At the plate, 3 Dodgers has multi-hit games, including Delvis Morales’ 3 for 5 effort.

Patterson is doing extremely well so far

He’s the 29th round pick from 2010 and he’s putting up really good numbers so far. He was the player of the week of the week of 7/12. I wonder what pitches he has and what his velocity is.

the one thing working against him is his age

since he’s a 23 year old in a rookie league, but who knows maybe we got a sleeper on our hands

It may only be one thing

but it is the biggest thing. He’s not even on my radar until he’s facing men not boys.

Cavasoz-Galvez

Has 30 doubles in 87 games. That’s pretty sick.

hit the weight room

maybe some more of those will get out.

Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You'll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you'll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press'll think you're colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob.

Plate discipline will be his achilles heal.

and at his age I don’t see that getting any better.

I forgot to originally mention

that the Raptors clinched a playoff spot with their win. I added a note above

Akins is absolutely destroying the ball.

Great Lakes couldn’t use him for the playoff run?

by pdotmac1 on Jul 27, 2010 9:07 AM PDT reply actions

well they already clinched a playoff spot in the first half...

but I wouldn’t be surprised if he got moved up toward the middle of August so he get’s some experience with the team, and then is able to play with them during the playoffs

So will B Wallach be pitching for his dad

in 2012?

(In LA, not Albuquerque.)
