Andre Ethier: Take Two Of These And Call Me In The Morning

about 1 month ago: Los Angeles Dodgers' Andre Ethier watches his two-run single against the San Diego Padres in the seventh inning of a baseball game Tuesday, July 27, 2010, in San Diego. (AP Photo/Gregory Bull)

Not even the stomach flu could keep Andre Ethier down, as he delivered a two-out, two-run, pinch-hit single in the seventh inning to support more wonderful Dodger pitching, giving them their fifth win in six games, a 2-0 final over the Padres. It was the Dodgers fourth shutout in their last six games.

Chad Billingsley was great in his six innings, not allowing a run and pushing his scoreless streak to 15 consecutive innings. He ran into some trouble in the fourth inning, loading the bases with nobody out, but got out of the jam with a groundout, a popout, and a strikeout to end the frame. In the last six games, Dodger starting pitchers have allowed just one earned run in 43 innings.

Billingsley was only at 84 pitches through six innings, and appeared primed to go deep into this game, but Padres manager Bud Black forced the Dodgers hand by walking Russell Martin intentionally to load the bases with two outs. Rather than have Billingsley hit, Joe Torre tabbed Ethier, a late scratch due to the illness that has also claimed Jonathan Broxton and Brad Ausmus in recent days in the Dodger clubhouse.

Hong-Chih Kuo has lobbied the coaching staff to let him pitch more, and tonight he got his wish, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing a pair of hits but striking out five. Kuo threw a season-high 34 pitches, and threw two innings in a game for the third time this month.

Jonathan Broxton retired the side in order in the ninth for his 20th save, and it's always nice to see Matt Stairs make the last out.

Hiroki Kuroda faces Clayton Richard in tomorrow night's game.

WP - Chad Billingsley (9-5): 6 IP, 3 hits, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts

LP - Jon Garland (9-7): 6 2/3 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts

Sv - Jonathan Broxton (20): 1 IP, 1 strikeout

I believe Kuo

wants the ball all the time now, in a way, I believe he appreciates the concern but he probably feels no matter what, his next pitch could be his last.

I think Kuo wants to get paid in the offseason.

by Michael White on Jul 28, 2010 7:46 AM PDT up reply actions

How do you know? I don’t mean to be rude. But no one knows how much stress Kuo’s arm can take. Maybe 1 IP every other day is too much — that is, any pitch could be his last. Or maybe it’s too conservative and you’re missing out on valuable innings from the guy.

Unless I’m missing something, 1 IP every other day is as random a decision on his usage as any other decision. There’s a point that we can all agree is “overwork,” of course, but I don’t know that Kuo is nearing that, even now.

Let’s also not forget that Bob T, who knows something about baseball, once predicted that Kuo would never again pitch meaningful innings for the Dodgers. I don’t mention this to embarrass Bob — I say this to remind everyone that every inning he pitches for our team until the end of his career is gravy.

Kuo

I’ve been told that its not amount of innings in his arm, its the times he has to warm up that bothers him. He has a hard time warming up, so actually using him two innings for one night and letting him sit a night or two will probably hurt his arm less than doing back to back relief pitching.

by Tripon on Jul 28, 2010 12:59 AM PDT reply actions

Bills on 3 days rest in SF??

Tony Jackson had this in his game recap at espnla:

That is, unless Torre decides to bring him back on three days’ rest Saturday at San Francisco, a game for which the Dodgers need a spot starter. That is an idea Torre indicated before the game he was leaning against but would wait to see how this start went before completely ruling it out. Billingsley threw just 84 pitches against the Padres

I’d would rather keep Bills on his regular rest and start him against SD @ DS, but the way he’s pitching I can see why Torre would be giving this some thought.
