From MLB Trade Rumors
•The Phillies and Astros are now dealing one-on-one, with no other teams involved, according to Olney (via Twitter). Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Phillies are the favorites to acquire Oswalt and notes (on Twitter) that the Yanks inquired once.
It would be very funny/strange
if the Phillies take on Oswalt’s contract and send prospects when they could have simply signed Cliff Lee to a deal.

Which is better?
Peralta at 3rd and Blake moves to LF or Blake at 3rd and Pods at left? Assuming May/Pimentel could’ve gotten Peralta
anything that has Blake in LF is a bad idea
by Eric Stephen on Jul 28, 2010 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Can you think of another prospect
But Jerry Sands might be the first Dodger prospect to hit double digit home runs in two stops since Andy LaRoche hit 10 and 13 in Sally league and then in Florida back in 2004.
Motte and Boggs give up 4
and the Mets get Santana off the loss hook. 7-7 Cards/Mets.

I didn't buy the 2010 Baseball America Prospect Handbook
What were Pimentel and May ranked, if at all?
@Kevin_Goldstein: Dear Tweeters: Lucas May does not have great power, Elisaul Pimentel does not have big upside
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
very nice to hear.
thank you :) and pods has been very solid, we’ll take that.
Kenley Jansen > Mariano Rivera
its true
pimentals upside is a good reliever tho..
95 mph fastball wipeout slider
Bases loaded and 1 out for the Gnats
But who cares, the real game is about to start.

Hell of a night for the Sandman
Wow I want him to make the majors, that nickname is too good for him to fail.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
theres no doubt about him makin it to the majors
its just when are the dodgers calling him up
WHAT>?!?>!>!?
if he keeps on dominating AA like he has been…
he might be in AAA soon or to begin next season…. hes gonna dominate the hitter friendly PCL and the dodgers are gonna call him up…
its amazing how well sands is doing in all these pitcher friendly leagues (midwest and southern)
You might want to temper your excitement a bit
Remember how great Laroche was in the minors? I don’t expect the same thing to happen, but not everyone who puts up these numbers turns into a stud.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
laroche is not sands
sands is a whole nother story
Laroche showed really good power with great patience
If anyone should have succeeded in the majors it was Laroche.
True there were injuries, which I didn’t think of when i first posted, but I don’t think it’s just been injuries that have halted Andy’s career.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
sands power is on another level
sands is a huge guy…
these guys arent comparable
Jesus
I’m saying can’t miss prospects can miss, I’m not having a direct comparison of Sands to Laroche, I could have said Joel Guzman, Brandon Wood, Dallas Mcphereson, etc…
I just wouldnt act like Sands is a amazing can’t-miss prospect, it probably won’t make you look too good on sites like minorleagueball.com.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
To be fair
his main mantra was that it was too soon to write off Russell.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
yeah but to be fair
you never explained why next september was your answer
WRONG - I DID
He’ll start next season in AA
They won’t rush him to the hitter’s and AAAA player’s haven in Albuquerque, let alone to the bigs.
by David Young on Jul 28, 2010 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions
And I’m guessing later
Maybe mid-way next season [to AAA] to give him one more adjustment before Sept. callups. That would still be one hell of a rapid ascension.
by David Young on Jul 28, 2010 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions
And it is pretty clear that any speculation on when Sands hit the majors is just that, speculation.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
I do love Russell
But I’m sure some people have noticed how I haven’t been nearly as high on him now as I was even a month ago.
Russell makes me sad :(
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Not given up
Just no reason to defend him as being a legit prospect at the moment when he’s not showing he can handle anything about HiA. It kills me that everyone who doubted him had the argument that he was just beating up on younger players, and they are right (for now).
Just going back and looking at his HiA numbers show me that he isn’t done, and I think he’s just had some growing pains.
Russell is still on my radar, but I’m guessing we will have to wait till next season to see any real production from him in AA. I still have faith in him though.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
You seem to be assuming he will keep dominating every level, on some continued ascension. I do not think it will be quite that easy.
by Eric Stephen on Jul 28, 2010 7:24 PM PDT up reply actions
It's a combo of two things
1) he is bound to hit a blip at some point
2) name the last offensive prospect to be promoted so quickly
I am assuming he will be blocked next year, too.

I think there is a VERY low chance he'd have a shot at LF next year in the bigs
But he’d have to continue to tear it up this year, then have a huge Spring. Lots of ifs.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
lots of ifs?
continute to tear it up this year: hes been tearing it up since ogden last year.. why stop now?
have a huge spring: i didnt say be the LF next year… i just dont think itll be next september… probably at the super 2 deadline unless he kills and he takes the starting job
The Dodgers aren’t going to call him up to be a 4th OF, and they will surely acquire a third OF this offseason to go with Kemp and Andre.
Also, the last time I heard about waiting for Super 2 was Chris Withrow this year. That was ridiculous, as is this.
by Eric Stephen on Jul 28, 2010 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions
I wasn't talking to you here, so it doesn't matter if you said it would be September
And why stop now? Players hit slumps. It happens. Players who have great years just suddenly hit walls. It sucks, but it happens.
Listen, I want Sands to succeed so incredibly bad because this team needs more power, and Sands could definitely be the guy to give it to them. I’m just worried about putting too much hope in him and having him not turn out how we hope.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
sands was hitting a BABIP slump in july
but he was still walking a lot, hitting homeruns and not K-ing an insane amount. He’s fighting through his slump right now.
lol hes in a slump in AA till today
he was at 260….
but his OPS was still .950
It's great to see that even when he doesn't hit he still walks
That’s an incredibly great sign.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
+1
his only problem may be… his K rate is a little high.. but its getting better…
I don't have a problem with strikeouts from a hitter
There are plenty that succeed with a high strikeout rate. A great example of someone who strikes out a bunch but is still very good (incredibly great over his career) is Arod.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Obviously I'm not saying any prospects the Dodgers have are like Arod
Just saying strikeouts arent the devil, lol.

i dont understand your logic

When is the last time you saw Ned Colletti hand a job to a rookie?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
but you said he'd be in AA next year
If he continues anything close to this production I don’t agree.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
1/2 year this year, start the next year in AA too
That gets a full year of AA under his belt. Ned likes finished products, remember? And the Dodgers don’t seem to think of Albuquerque as finishing school.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
I totally read that with the "a" in the phrase "hand a job"

From the ABQ game notes
Yesterday’s late scratch of Claudio Vargas due to lower back soreness created an instant ripple effect throughout the Isotopes rotation. Today’s originally scheduled starter Jesus Castillo was forced to pitch yesterday, creating a void that was to be filled by Bobby Blevins. The right-hander’s flight through Atlanta from Double-A Chattanooga was canceled, however, putting Blevins’s arrival before gametime in doubt. Enter lefty Cody White, who was summoned from Phoenix where he had been pitching for the Arizona League Dodgers. In his previous stint at Triple-A, White went 3-0 with a 7.59 ERA (18 ER / 21.1 IP) in six appearances, two starts. While reliever Jon Link will get the start, White is likely to see action quickly as the reliever’s longest outing this year is two innings.

Both cheaper
in terms of money and players. If the Phillies get Oswalt, I have to seriously wonder what the heck they are doing.
It is bizarre
they could simply have given Lee an extension this offseason, although he seems hellbent on FA, or simply kept him and taken the two draft picks later, in what is supposed to be a deep draft.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
From Stark:
“A further sign that the Phillies remain the favorite — and perhaps the only team left — in the talks for Oswalt is that the two other clubs that had been in the bidding, the Cardinals and Dodgers, have moved on to pursue other deals.
The Cardinals have concentrated on second-tier starters and on an infield bat. The Dodgers, meanwhile, made a trade Wednesday for Royals outfielder Scott Podsednik, and were more focused on trying to trade for Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly and Pirates pitcher Paul Maholm than they were on continuing talks for Oswalt."
Somebody will pay for that later

Trade quotes
Colletti on Lucas May:
“He’s a great kid who loves to play and we think he has a chance to be a real good hitter,” Colletti said. “Catching is tough. At this point, we decided to go for the now and wish him the best.”
Colletti on Pimentel:
“He’s still in A-ball,” said Colletti. “He’s progressed pretty well for as long as he’s pitched.”

“hes not a major league catcher”

Padres lineup
i have been telling padre fans that their lineup other then Agone eckstein and possibly hundley look like a bunch of minor leaguers. Seriously these guys think they can last in the playoffs with that lineup. They have been feeding off weaker teams that is why they are in first place
Not really true
They have done a really good job keeping games close and getting to a battle of the bullpens where they have an advantage.
pitching
yes, their pitching is awsome but come on with that lineup the are not going to compete in the playoffs.

Trade Manny and change for Kurt Suzuki
Get Beane on the phone
I like the idea of moving Manny and Martin
Manny because he’s gone and Martin for his contract. Both have trade value for teams. Suzuki is young, cheap, good defensively. Ok bat.
Didn't the A's just finish his contract extension?
Suzuki that is?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
They just signed Suzuki to a 4-year extension. That screams “we want to keep this guy, not trade him” to me
by Eric Stephen on Jul 28, 2010 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions
Think about it though.
Signed to a very reasonable contract = cost effective for Dodgers = Beane has leverage.
Haren signed his extension in September 2005, and was traded in December 2007. Not applicable.
Swisher was closer since he signed his extension in May 2007 and was traded the next offseason.
by Eric Stephen on Jul 28, 2010 8:17 PM PDT up reply actions
This is where I become like some others
in the sense where I want these possible trades to have some sense of reality (okay the Haren deal makes that hard) but the Dodgers are not trading Manny primarily because no one is going to pick up is deferred money and really what could you get for a guy on the DL right now.
He will be available next month because he’ll pass through waivers.
If we fall out of contention,
I hope Manny gets moved even if we eat the contract. Stating the obvious, but yea.
Suzuki plays just as much as Martin, has a near league average OPS+ in the last 3 years of baseball, And has a contract signed up to 2013, with a 2014 option. He’s pretty valuable, probably more valuable than Martin.
They do have a great young rotation.
Probably not worth the cost to pry him away.

That, is that true
cause UCLA says that in order to transfer into their doctorate program from a masters program, you need to have at least a 3.5 in the program, which would imply that lower grades are possible
How would you define your approach to management, apart from being brilliant?
by Josie Becker on Jul 28, 2010 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions
From my experience, grad students are not smarter than undergrad students. Taking the GRE is a joke for instance, and I assume similar graduate level exams such as the LSAT, MCATs, etc aren’t testing intelligence.
However, because its standard for grad programs to not allow a grade below B to be passing, there is heavy grade inflation going on. Its not as if I’m not smart enough to get a 4.0 or near it. I did the work, I said the right things.
But I’m pretty damn sure I didn’t really earn that 4.0.
Well it's a graduate examination
