Dodger Offense Lulled To Sleep By Padres

about 1 month ago: San Diego Padres starting pitcher Clayton Richard throws against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first inning of a baseball game Wednesday, July 28, 2010, in San Diego. (AP Photo/Gregory Bull)

The Dodgers fell in love with their recent formula of winning low-scoring shutouts, and it looked for a while like a third-inning RBI single by Jamey Carroll would hold up. But a trio of two-run rallies by the Padres ended the Dodgers fun and San Diego took the second game of the series 6-1.

Hiroki Kuroda was cruising through five scoreless innings, having thrown just 63 pitches. He had retired 10 straight batters at that point, and a number of scoreless streaks were in play:

  • 15 straight innings by Kuroda
  • 30 straight innings by Dodger pitchers
  • 31 straight innings by Dodger pitchers at Petco Park

However, in the sixth inning, all those streaks came to an end, as the Padres used two singles, two walks, and a sacrifice fly to pull ahead 2-1. They added two more runs in the seventh inning off Jeff Weaver (well, one was inherited by Weaver), but the good news is that Jack Taschner finally recorded an out as a Dodger, facing his sixth batter since joining the club. Travis Schlichting allowed the final two runs in the eighth.

Notes

  • The final 19 Dodgers were retired tonight by Padres pitchers
  • The Dodgers have scored 28 runs in 13 games since the All-Star break, an average of 2.15 per game
  • Justin Miller, who was designated for assignment last week, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple A Albuquerque, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com
  • Vicente Padilla faces Mat Latos in tomorrow's series finale, a 3:35pm start. Scott Podsednik is expected to be in San Diego tomorrow.

WP - Clayton Richard (8-5): 6 IP, 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts

LP - Hiroki Kuroda (8-9): 6+ IP, 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts

I like it. I don’t think we gave up much for an upgrade especially if the Dodger DFA GA. Some new blood may be the boost we need. Still think another move is needed.

Someone has to drive him in

Since he won’t be hitting any home runs to score runs.

For instance, Carroll was on base twice tonight and Ethier went 0-4.

Really only 5 choices (in no particular order):

1. Option Schlicting (sp?)
2. Option Paul
3. DFA GA
4. DFA GS
5. DFA JT

Any of the three DFA’s don’t have to happen, since they don’t need a 40-man spot, but all are viable options.

by elsid on Jul 28, 2010 11:01 PM PDT up reply actions

If I had my druthers, this would be my list:

1. DFA GA
2. DFA Taschner
3. Option Schlicting
4. Send down Sherrill (if he would go, but I don’t think he would)
5. Option Paul (though I think this may be a good move at the moment, he’s not doing a thing well on the big club right now, some time back in AAA could help)

"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"

by Ivdown on Jul 28, 2010 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions

as poor as your brother's results have been

(and I do not post this to start another debate with you) I think he has a better chance than taschner to contribute something down the stretch

and as others have said if gs was going to be dfa’d they’d have just done it by now

id prefer ga gone (again I ask — how shitty will he have to be? the sample size is not that small any more — he’s a corpse) but it will probably be a pitcher – taschner has to be the guy (or longshot – schlichting optioned), he still stinks of the giants to me anyway

I just wish pods was a switch hitter so we’d definitely have seen the last of jamey carroll, starting left fielder

one more thing on sherrill as a loogy in response to whoever’s been posting the splits:

a loogy can’t be completely dismal against rh hitters due to the potential for pinch hitting. many lefties who are going to be left in to face a sherrill in late innings are going to be top hitters… so he’ll be facing a good percentage (35-45% — I’ve seen the numbers somewhere) of rh hitters as well as tough lefties. to simply look at this years splits and say “don’t let him face rh hitters and he’ll be fine” is really not feasible.

he will have to improve significantly to be helpful – but as long as he is in the dodger blue I will root for him to pitch well.

by lchristmas on Jul 28, 2010 11:33 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Yes, but how often has a LOOGY been brought in to face a left handed hitter and the opposing manager pinch hits for that guy. It’s worth the risk of using the LOOGY anyway if you think they’ll get a starter out. Now, no one is pinch hitting for Ryan Howard, but you may get someone like Ibanez out of the game, then you bring back in a righty and you’ve lost a pitcher but they’ve lost a starter.

I’m not sure how often this happens anymore, but its still worth it.

Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You'll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you'll be classy. by G.Scott on Jul 29, 2010 8:06 AM PDT up reply actions

it isn't worth it if that RH hitter brought in gets the hit that wins the game

its an acceptable risk/reward to get a starter out of the game if there’s at least a league average chance of getting that RH hitter out -

but Sherrill has been unspeakably bad against righties in a pretty decent sample size this year – the splits are hard to look at

1. I see that Ned swooped in at the last moment to take Posednik away from the Giants. Isn’t that how he got Pierre?
2. Posednik is still better than Pierre, though. Ask any White Sox fan.
3. I can’t help but wonder what this deal says about Manny’s health.
4. Can’t say I knew much about Pimentel, but simply from reading this site I had concluded that Lucas May would never catch in the majors. So the reaction to his trade surprises me a little.
5. What’s Ned giving up for Ted Lilly?

by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 29, 2010 6:00 AM PDT reply actions

I am looking forward to seeing Pods, he can only help at this point. However, if GA is not gone by the end of this month then I really don’t know what to say about our chances. Not that GA is going to make or break this team, but his roster spot could be used by someone with some chance of contributing.

by OB12 on Jul 29, 2010 6:21 AM PDT up reply actions

agree

the response over at mcc is amusing, they are acting like we just traded carlos santana again for a player with the usefulness of derosa and the contract of rowand, and signed him to a jason schmidt extension.

guffawing it up about our “top catching prospect” – he’s a 25 year old with borderline tools and we threw in a middling a-ball pitcher to get a CHEAP useful major league player at a position of need…

calm it down over there

and goddamnit, get GA out of here before his continued presence causes me to break more objects in my house

by lchristmas on Jul 29, 2010 6:29 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

GA’s craptasticness is spreading to the rest of the team. Much like vampires, the only way to stop the spread is to get rid of the source.

by OB12 on Jul 29, 2010 6:38 AM PDT up reply actions

I would not be shocked if Schlichting were the man optioned today to make room for Podsednik. In order of likelihood, IMO:

1) Schlichting optioned
2) Paul optioned
3) Taschner DFA
678) Anderson DFA

by Eric Stephen on Jul 29, 2010 6:45 AM PDT up reply actions

3, 1, 2, 678

my prediction, not what i’d like to see

but take into account that I have no information to support this and I am mildly retarded

by lchristmas on Jul 29, 2010 6:49 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

If we assume that Ned still wants a starter (Lilly? Maholm?) and a reliever, then by Monday Taschner, Schlichting and Anderson should be gone. I know the smart money is on Paul instead of GA, but Pods and Johnson should give Torre enough veteran presence. Pods has a ring in a box! Of course the wild card for GA remains Manny’s calf—when I first heard about the Pods deal my gut reaction was to wonder if Manny was going to the 60-day DL.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 29, 2010 6:55 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

but if a GA DFA were to happen, I’m not sure it would happen before Johnson gets back. I’m willing to be pleasantly surprised though.

If Happ is the centerpiece of the Phlly trade with the Astros

then to me this another example of how the lack of development of both James McDonald and Scott Elbert have hurt the Dodgers chances in making a deal this season.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 29, 2010 6:23 AM PDT reply actions

Yep. It could also be another example of how teams will ask for our best prospects then turn around and take crap from another team.

by OB12 on Jul 29, 2010 6:37 AM PDT up reply actions

But what pitching prospect/starter do we have that can compare to the MLB time of Happ? I know he is overrated, but crying foul about what is asked from us on this one seems misguided. We did not have a “proven” mlb starter to give them (at least in their eyes), and our FO needs to take responsibility for that.

by robotmadeofnails on Jul 29, 2010 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Now that Lucas May and Pimentel are out of the Dodgers system

They will get much more attention and move up in prospect rankings. Hardly anyone in prospect circles was ranking Santana, Bell, etc… as TOP prospects before their trades. They only got national attention after.

For instance, Josh Bell was a C+ prospect before the 09’ season. He was having a pretty solid year (but nothing off the charts), got traded, and suddenly he was one of the top 3B prospects in the minors.

by BFDC on Jul 29, 2010 6:47 AM PDT reply actions

In other words, Dodgers prospects get no love (except from us).

Source: Deal is 3-for-1. Happ in. #Astros would pay “very significant” part of Oswalt’s remaining salary, which is over 23M. #MLB #Phillies

Sounds like a buddy deal to me.

by OB12 on Jul 29, 2010 7:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Astros are getting a minor league first basemen they wanted, forget his name off hand, and one other. Astros are also paying $12M, half of what Oswalt is owed, if his 2012 option is bought out, not picked up.

Thought the Cards were going to get him, but Astros wanted the moon to move him inside the division. I know Oswalt wanted to go to STL or ATL more than anywhere, since those are closer to his home. At the end, he was just fed up with Houston, and not putting forth the effort to win.

Still wouldn’t mind seeing him decline the trade.

by elsid on Jul 29, 2010 8:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Sounds like the Gasol trade.

Multiple reports that Astros would get Jay Happ, 2 prospects in Oswalt deal w/Philly. They also would pick up some of Oswalt’s salary. 1 minute ago

by Jesse S. on Jul 29, 2010 7:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Depending on who the two prospects are, and I can’t imagine they are great since Philly has moved most of their great talent, then our equivalent package would be Ely plus a couple of prospects.

by OB12 on Jul 29, 2010 7:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Hard to believe Ned didn’t offer Ely. Seems to me that we’re back to bh’s point—Seattle, Arizona, and now Houston wanted a young major leaguer they could plug into the lineup from day 1. Smoak, Happ, and Hokie Joe were preferable to Ely and McDonald.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 29, 2010 7:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

McDonald, Elbert, and Ely aren’t quite at that level, yet, so any combo of prospects aside from them would still not fulfill the desire of Arizona and Houston to get an actual major leaguer back in return.

I’m angry, but more frustrated by circumstance right now.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 29, 2010 7:29 AM PDT up reply actions

It probably

Would not bug me if the Phillies picked up all the salary, then you could argue that the Dodgers did not have the resources.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 29, 2010 7:37 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I agree. The reports of Houston picking up a lot of the Salary is what is a disconcerting.

by BFDC on Jul 29, 2010 7:40 AM PDT up reply actions

This.

Makes me think though that the Astros were demanding too many prospects from Ned.

by Jesse S. on Jul 29, 2010 7:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Is it crazy to think

that its more difficult for Ned to work out deals with a lot of GM’s? From the reports that he is not the easiest guy to work with, on top of the likely impression that Ned is a sucker, I don’t find it hard to imagine other GM’s asking for more from us every time Ned picks up the phone, just to see what he’ll go for.

by BFDC on Jul 29, 2010 7:39 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think that’s necessarily the case, but rather most of the rumored stuff that leaks out before deals actually happen is just crap.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 29, 2010 7:42 AM PDT up reply actions

100% agree

and the final names for the big boys suggest you are correct. It also would seem that we are way over valuing our players or other GM’s are way under valuing our players when we see the names that do eventually get dealt.

Given the struggles of Elbert/McDonald two our most highly touted pitchers entering this season, is it any wonder the GM’s are not sold on our prospects.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Jul 29, 2010 8:16 AM PDT up reply actions

His biggest problem is that almost all of his ‘name’ prospects are either already on the team and trading them creates another hole, or just not all that good.

by LA Taco on Jul 29, 2010 7:47 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Said it before

But the biggest disappointing thing this year for me, has been the inability of Elbert and McDonald to step up to where their talent dictates they should be. I really thought this could be their year. Manny being old, Middle relievers being middle releivers, kemp still trying to figure it out, Martin 10 being the same as Martin 09, all of that sucks but for whatever reason I wish the most that those two had put it together.

by LA Taco on Jul 29, 2010 7:43 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Happ

If healthy is better than Ely.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 29, 2010 7:38 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

True. And much, much more heralded which is hugely important in a deal like this.

by LA Taco on Jul 29, 2010 7:44 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Either way

Its pretty interesting that guys like Saunders & Happ + throw-ins are netting “Aces” this year.

by BFDC on Jul 29, 2010 7:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Via a via the Dodgers, who would be our Saunders and Happ?

by LA Taco on Jul 29, 2010 7:50 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

We don’t have one, which is the problem.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 29, 2010 7:51 AM PDT up reply actions

We would have to supplement a guy like Ely or McDonald with better prospects.

Either that or take on more of Oswalt’s salary which is very unlikely considering our situation.

by Jesse S. on Jul 29, 2010 7:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly. I would love to blame people but you really need to look at a whole series of moves going back years. As you say above, the circumstances are frustrating.

by LA Taco on Jul 29, 2010 7:57 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
