It's tough

the Dodgers don’t have a day off until week from Monday. They have Monk pitching tomorrow and Bills on 3 days rest on Saturday (even if they get somebody in a trade).

Those are the things that Joe has to deal with in terms of managing this game.

Padilla lasting just 4 innings did not help matters.

Should Broxton pitched the 9th, sure. But George Sherrill was likely to pitch an inning today at some point, it just happened to be the 9th.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 29, 2010 6:52 PM PDT up reply actions

by 68elcamino427 on Jul 29, 2010 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

You have

Broxton, Sherrill, Weaver and Schlcting left.

There are not a lot of good options when you know you need to pitch at least 2 more innings.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 29, 2010 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions

turns out the Dodgers didn’t need pithcers for two more innings in this case?

by Joey Joe on Jul 29, 2010 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Pirates is lower, I think. But still, it’s remarkable.

by dsm9412 on Jul 29, 2010 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok, maybe not going away. But I have to think that if Manny and Ethier stay healthy, Kemp and Ethier continue to rip the cover off the ball and the rotation pitched like it is now at the beginning of the season, it’s a race and the one the Dodgers can win. Obviously that’s a lot to go right, but it’s what they would’ve needed to remain competitive. Which I guess is obvious.

Q: Mr Torre why did you bring in Sherrill to pitch the 9th?
A: Because Weaver was unavailable.

by Xeifrank on Jul 29, 2010 6:58 PM PDT reply actions

Nice of everyone to blame Sherrill and Torre

when the only Dodgers to drive in a run today were a rare Loney HR and a rarer pinch hit from anybody, this time Garret Anderson.

If Ethier, Furcal and Kemp don’t have great August and September, the Dodgers don’t have a shot to win.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 29, 2010 6:59 PM PDT reply actions

WE was 40% even with the lack of runs. Blame goes to Torre with out a doubt here, unless Broxton was sick or giving birth.

by Xeifrank on Jul 29, 2010 7:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Bringing in Sherrill

to face Scott Hairston was none to bright. Hairston kills lefties, even good ones, the fact that George can’t get any RHH hitters out, you knew that we’d have a problem. Joe did have RH options, he did not use them. Sure the DOdgers offense failed again, but I don’t have a problem with blaming Joe for not thinking through his pitcher selection in the 9th inning. Sometimes the manager fails. and he did.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Jul 29, 2010 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I get this

but when you are tied, in the 9th, and we give up a run, you feel that everyone should jump on here and start in on how we should score more or blame the guy that just gave up the hit to lose?

I swear I get what you are saying, and I think you are right. But you do this every night. We get it man. We don’t fuckin score enough. But Loney, GA, Ethier, Kemp, and Furcal didn’t give up 2 hits in the 9th to lose.

by keithc13 on Jul 29, 2010 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I dont think people get upset when the best players fail...bc they are the best the Dodgers have..

So if Ethier/Kemp/Furcal dont succeed…its ok bc at least they tried.

Its when you lose without even using your best players, or you make dumb decisions, that really eat at people.

by dsm9412 on Jul 29, 2010 7:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Blame to be spread around but it's true with the offense doing nothing for more than a week and anemic

these last two games you can blame the hitters as much as anyone. That and have a crummy back end of the bullpen. And Padilla’s short outing. And along with all that, not using Sherrill as a LOOGY. :-)

Three hits, two runs, Padilla struggled, someone other than Broxton in the ninth, Pods in center where he’s played one game all year. The Dodgers just aren’t very good right now, from top to bottom.
