Stick it out. Th pitching is on. And the bats need to come alive. Bison should pull his head out of Rianna’s ass long enough to make an attempt to reach his potential.

The only non-tender candidates

are Billingsley, Kuo, Sherrill, Martin, and Loney.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 30, 2010 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions

In 200 words or less

what does it mean for a player to get non-tendered? You may now begin.

by Jesse S. on Jul 30, 2010 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Just releasing their control over the player. Not offering arbitration.

by Michael White on Jul 30, 2010 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions

So in other words

The only non-tender candidates:

Sherrill, Martin

by BFDC on Jul 30, 2010 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Seriously

why the HELL would Billingsley or Loney be non-tendered.

A player is non-tendered when the team has said player under control for next year, but chooses not to offer arbitration because their salary next year isn’t comparable with the salary they will receive. George Sherrill is a non-tender candidate because he makes $4.5MM this year and will get a raise next year, so you non-tender him and hope to sign him as a free agent.

I like Cetera.

by G.Scott on Jul 30, 2010 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

So you are telling the player

that they are not worth what they’re going to make so you’re cancelling their contract?

by Jesse S. on Jul 30, 2010 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

They have no contract. They are on a one year deal and eligible for salary arbitration.

by Michael White on Jul 30, 2010 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Why would they try to re-sign Sherrill?

by dsm9412 on Jul 30, 2010 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

he still has value as a LOOGY. You just hope to get him for some sort of $4-5/2 years deal instead of paying him like a closer, if you choose to try to resign him. A lot of non-tenders choose not to resign with the team that released them.

I like Cetera.

He was worth over 8 WAR in the 2 years he was a starter when he was 23-25. Thats pretty damn good.

by UCLADodger32 on Jul 30, 2010 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

But that WAR is never comign back. I’m sure you’ll admit that. He’s not going to be a competent defensive CF, so you might as well throw that WAR out the window.

by Michael White on Jul 30, 2010 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Never coming back?

He’s one year removed from a 5 WAR, and you’re ready to say he’ll never be at the level of 4 WAR again?

"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"

by Ivdown on Jul 30, 2010 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions

My point is that it was based on being an above average defensive CF. So, no I don’t think that aspect is ever coming back.

I guess anything is possible, if he starts hitting the shit out of the ball.

by Michael White on Jul 30, 2010 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I dont think his defense is as bad at the numbers say. He was atrocious, abominable, whatever else you want to say in the first month and a half. Since then he has been fine, and i see no reason why he cant be average to -5 for the next few years. That, plus even reverting back to last seasons offense is really valuable.

by UCLADodger32 on Jul 30, 2010 1:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree. He could also become a pretty solid RF if that’s what it came down to.

by BFDC on Jul 30, 2010 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Or he could become Ellis Valentine

and no one will have heard of him 35 years from now.

by meercatjohn on Jul 30, 2010 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Would it be too much to ask Ethier to move to left for Kemp?

by dsm9412 on Jul 30, 2010 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions

I've been told he's a star

and that stars are not asked to move mid-season because it is beneath them. That and the fact Andre probably fancies himself a stellar RF and would not understand the request.

by meercatjohn on Jul 30, 2010 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

He had a 3.1 UZR last year (could be slightly off)

That didn’t account for a 5 WAR out of him. I believe 3 Wins were from his offensive value alone last season, before replacement level and positional value.

"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"

by Ivdown on Jul 30, 2010 1:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Disagree

Kemp has regressed a little bit. That doesn’t mean he’s not a good player nor will be. Maybe he’s not a HOFer, but there are very few players who never have down years over the course of their careers.

by BFDC on Jul 30, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Because

the Dodgers do not have any players in their system that you can objectively say are ready to play in the majors today.

And frankly, some GMs are not going to wait around and see if young prospects pan out.

Look at Pittsburgh’s haul in the Bay deal, they got two guys from Boston that are no longer on their 25-man roster, Andy Laroche is a bench player, Morris could be something nice but he is in AA right now.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 30, 2010 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel like most GMs are unwilling to wait because of the short lifespan of a GM with one organization. Maybe if they had 6-10 years to wait they’d be more inclined to put together a long-term plan instead of having to “go for it” every year to try to save their jobs.

Kershaw……

Andre is not exactly young
Chad is not exactly great

Kemp was great last year…not so much now. Sad face.

by UCLADodger32 on Jul 30, 2010 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Sad, some of them were young and great once

Martin 2007 legitimate claim next to McCann as best young catcher, now not young or great
Kemp 2009 legitimate claim to best young CF in a crowded field, still young
Chad 2008 / half of 2009 legitimate claim of being our ace, maybe getting back on track
Andre – to old now to be called young
Broxton – still great
Loney – neither young nor great

by meercatjohn on Jul 30, 2010 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions

You can also look at two other ball clubs that had highly touted systems in 2005

Angels:
Weaver – solid
Kendrick – no batting titles in sight
Aybar – good defensively, some offense
Kotchman – not even Loneyesque
Wood – biggest disappointment

Diamondbacks
Drew – was he worth that bonus
Upton – Superstar Label still applies
Reynolds – Power but one outcome is still mighty high
Pitching prospects – (Schwerzer traded, Parker out on rehab)

by bhsportsguy on Jul 30, 2010 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

So, I would say ours has turned out the best of the bunch.

Although the Angels had better FA vets around their “core”

by BFDC on Jul 30, 2010 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Kershaw, Kemp, Billingsley, Andre

Kemp was great last year and for a small part of this year, I’m not ready to cast him off as just an average player yet.

Over the last 2 years we’ve seen every team ask for Kemp, Chad and Kershaw for their big star player, and then take FAR less from other teams. I realize that we all know asking for any of these 4 is a pipe dream for these other teams, but I wonder if they even try to get equivalent players as hard as they do with the dodgers.

You’ll have to give me Soto as well then.

Marlon and Soto for Martin and Kemp would be intriguing. But in that trade, you’re basically betting that Travon Robinson or Jerry Sands can win the LF/RF job outright.

by Tripon on Jul 30, 2010 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

The different is that if you keep Matt, the Dodgers will likely sign a FA and block Robinson and Sands

by Tripon on Jul 30, 2010 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions

And Robinson is probably a candidate to play in AAA next year.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 30, 2010 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions

They’re both candidates to play in AAA next year, and the Dodgers under the current regime have shown they will promote guys from AA or only a few months in AAA if they think they are starters.

Of course the question is if the Dodgers think Sands and Robinson are starters.

why would the Dodgers act different with Kemp in CF as opposed to Byrd in CF related to next year.

by G.Scott on Jul 30, 2010 12:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Because Byrd has that shiny veteran label that Kemp doesn’t have. They might think because they have a veteran manning the OF, there’s less need to bring in a guy like GA, or another FA OF to bring leadership in the clubhouse.

To the front office, Kemp needs to be lead, while Byrd is a leader.

Why else does the club keeps on bringing in guys like GA, Blake, etc and constantly play up their relationship with Kemp?

Ripples in still water...

Belly-O hits the bottle, Tron Tron loses his feel. Sherrill tries 15 different adjustments.
Mattingley in SF and Torre in SD have no one credible late in a game besides the $4million dollar man after King Kuo.
Yesterday in a tie game, Torre rightfully holds Brox on the road as even if he holds serve and the Dodgers score, you’d still need another inning of a save situation. Closer at home makes sense.
With only the Germans, the Dream Weavers of the world available, Torre is forced to try to see an “improving” Sherrill…he was great last year and maybe he’s worked it out in the bigs.
NOT. Another divisional loss.

The ripple is that one or more prospects will get shipped out likely for a pen arm…Evan Meek! naw, Scott Down, maybe. or worse.
And we have another divisional loss on our record.

Tejada for nothing gives a good RH platoon with LH Headley at 3b(hitting .195 vs LH)
Kicked tires on Werth, woulda been a good fit.
Kick tires on Maholm, drives up Ned’s cost.
Waiting on his goal, I believe its Cody Ross, and watching price come down.
Lucky for LAD the Padres are in 1st or he woulda been a helluva seller GM adding to a budding young team with a good farm system. I bet they are good for years.

We imagine that didn’t go over too well. The Giants probably aren’t serious threats to land Dunn.

Bryce Harper wrote on his Facebook page Friday that he’s, “Probably going back to [the College of Southern Nevada] to win a National Championship!”

It’s nice to see a young man take his education so seriously. At the very least, this will get Nationals fans worked up. The team has until Aug. 16 to sign Harper, who was taken with the first overall pick in last month’s draft.

The Blue Jays tell rival teams that they are content to keep Scott Downs, Kevin Gregg, Jason Frasor and John Buck. The Jays claim they’d offer arbitration to all four, but some teams believe they’re just posturing. Frasor (barely) and Downs project as Type A free agents, while Buck and Gregg project as Type Bs. Click here for the details, but essentially the Jays could obtain six top picks in 2011 if all four players turn down arbitration to sign elsewhere.

Atahualpa: last Inca ruler.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 30, 2010 1:39 PM PDT up reply actions

(born c. 1502 — died Aug. 29, 1533, Cajamarca, Inca empire) Last free-reigning emperor of the Incas. He became ruler after defeating his half brother in what may have been the greatest military engagement in Inca history. The conquistador Francisco Pizarro met Atahuallpa just before the emperor’s triumphal entry into Cuzco and invited him to a feast in his honour. When Atahuallpa and his unarmed retainers arrived, Pizarro ambushed them on horseback with cannons and guns, slaughtered thousands, and took Atahuallpa prisoner. Pizarro accepted Atahuallpa’s offer of a ransom of a roomful of gold; then, having received 24 tons of gold and silver, he ordered Atahuallpa burned at the stake. The sentence was changed to death by garrote when Atahuallpa agreed to convert to Christianity.

I’ve read one of those books about history changing events. What if Atahuallpa had not accepted Pizarro’s invitation and simply attacked the Spaniards. Could have changed history almost as much the Dodgers not trading Pedro.

• Ethan Martin, rhp, Dodgers: Inland Empire isn’t known for being friendly to pitchers, but Martin has been letting balls fly out of the park more than usual recently. After allowing just one home run in the first three months, Martin has allowed five in his last three starts. He also has a forgettable 17-to-17 strikeout-to-walk ratio and it is clear that, despite his electric stuff, Martin’s pitchability hasn’t caught up. He ranks ninth in the California League in strikeouts, but he also leads the circuit in walks by a long margin and has the fourth highest WHIP among qualified pitchers. His home ballpark may have slightly inflated his numbers, but until he learns to harness his stuff better, Martin will continue to get himself into trouble.

This sounds like Bobby Abreu going from the Phillies to the Yankees with Cory Lidle for Carlos Monasterios and three others with the Yankees paying Abreu’s $16MM.

Yes really. Both Ely and Maholm don’t strike out people. The difference is that Maholm’s a sinkerballer.

But older and more expensive.

by Maddz on Jul 30, 2010 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Is that good for us?

I mean, they get a guy who will make league minimum for 3 years, we get a guy who will cost 6+ next year and 8+ year after. Maybe I’m still stuck in Elymania mode, but I figured Ely could match Maholm’s numbers.

I like Cetera.

by G.Scott on Jul 30, 2010 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Ely was throwing BP during his last few starts. If we can flip him for Maholm straight up, do it.

by silverwidow on Jul 30, 2010 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not sold on that at all. Shouldn’t Ely, in theory, still be developing somewhat? Maholm has peaked, and it wasn’t that great.

by prosellis on Jul 30, 2010 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not even a Maholm fan, but I’m not closing my eyes to value.

by silverwidow on Jul 30, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Which is basically what we’re looking for, right?

by prosellis on Jul 30, 2010 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Maholm is already that.

Why would you keep the guy who hopes to be a number 4 instead of trading him for a guy that is a number 4?

by Michael White on Jul 30, 2010 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Because he’s one tenth the price and younger. I don’t really dislike trying to land Maholm, I just think flipping Ely, who is really the only pitcher in the system that looks even remotely ready for MLB for him is a mistake. I would rather send them a guy with maybe some more upside but lower in the system.

Mostly the difference in money, beyond that I love the deal. I heard someone say maholm was a groundball pitcher and I don’t think that will play with us unless we improve our D.

Maholm hasnt been exactly lights out

his last few starts either. He does have a track record tho

by SeanMillerSavior on Jul 30, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

But he could have been our J.A. Happ next year.

For a team that is financially strapped, I see this as potentially limiting our ability to provide extension/upgrades in other spots. I mean, it’s not like we’re getting Cliff Lee, we’re getting Paul friggin Maholm.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 30, 2010 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Weisman posted something about him projecting to pitch on the 7th and I figured they’d go quickly. It’s a non-issue, I’m still going to enjoy the game. But I actually do enjoy watching coked out has-beens try to play baseball, so the Hollywood Stars night was my consolation prize.
