Out there

With Punto out and being Punto, plus Danny Valencia being a bit green at 3b…it’s remotely possible Minny might be in a dealing mood for 3b…How out there would it be to send Blake plus cash for nothing while picking up Aramis Ramirez plus cash, and Lilly.
If Aramis really is in trade talks for here, we could just add him and put Blake thru waivers in August.
No basis in fact here, just wondering why Aramis’ name came up with the "position player " rumor involving Lilly and the Cubs

Another team helping out the Yankees basically…I know he’s a free agent in 2011 but still…

The Astros are picking up a lot of the money owed to Berkman and won’t obtain top prospects in return, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney. The Yankees expect to make one or two more moves and continue working on trades (all Twitter links). [via MLBTR]

Carlos Zambrano prefers to stay with the Cubs but will waive his no-trade clause if Chicago is able to deal him.

Most likely, it won’t come to that. Big Z is owed the prorated portion of his $17.875 million contract this season, $17.875 million in 2011 and $18 million in 2012. As if that isn’t ugly enough, his 2010 season has been mired by ineffectiveness, a demotion to the bullpen and a team-issued suspension. A deal this winter is a strong possibility, but the Cubs will have to eat a lot of salary to do that.
Source: Gordon Wittenmyer on Twitter

by megaballs on Jul 30, 2010 5:08 PM PDT reply actions

I’d deal for Zambrano this winter.

You know I think the Dodgers will be mediocre next year. It is my belief that they won’t stink, but they won’t contend, either.

If Zambrano were to come to the Dodgers, he’d have to be cheap. Have to be. Not only is there no money to get him, but even if there were, he’s not worth the risk.

If he comes to us, and he’s bad, it’s no big loss, right? After all, if you accept my contention that they’re not going anywhere anyway, what’s the difference in being a little worse off?

But if he’s good, and if everything else goes right, then maybe, just maybe, he could be a difference maker. Kershaw – Good Z – Billingsley is a good 1-2-3.

The Omar Moreno of this blog

by Humma Kavula on Jul 30, 2010 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Circus comes to town...doubt it

Best part about Zambrano is he likely won’t cost us our better prospects.
Still, I have a hard time seeing us taking on any kind of salary …it feels like we have a few mil tops and Z would take more $ and a 2 1/3 year commitment. I think its the right move.

I’m just diggin the overall MLB circus and we’ll see how it all shakes out…I am scared as I like 2 or 3 or 4 of our pitchers and am intrigued by Sands…Ned seems to have his heart set on Gordon replacing Raffy…probably Logan’s work…the rest I could live parting with for Lilly or Myers in particular

by megaballs on Jul 30, 2010 5:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I am seriously assuming that the Cubs send over, like, $30 million or more in the deal, and even then that he will not cost top prospects. I am assuming that he will be available in a Zambrano-must-go deal.

Maybe I’m naive, or at least, unrealistic. That’s OK — it just means that when I get the news that he’ll cost more, either in dollars or in prospects, I’m no longer interested.

It would make sense

only if they thought fans really care about this stuff.

Most don’t.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 30, 2010 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re right, I think most fans don’t care about this stuff. But I know it’s the only thing people like Bill Plashke reads to base his opinions on, and a lot of casual fans think Bill Plashke knows what the fuck he’s talking about. That’s the only reason I could see the Dodgers, or any other team, doing this.

by G.Scott on Jul 30, 2010 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

But wouldn't somebody refute these things if it'sjust the Dodgers putting false rumors out there?

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

by underdog on Jul 30, 2010 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, I think if the Dodgers leak that the Astros want Billingsley, it is in the Astros best interest to let the rumor stay out there because it may start negotiations off at a higher point than they would have originally been. Again, this is all conspiracy theories and mind games, but I suppose if MLB Gms felt like they could gain an advantage by having the media on their side, they would do it in a heartbeat.

two things

If Berkman heads to NY, I assume he’ll be a DH no? Also, is the Maholm deal official yet or not?

William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.

also, any interest in a pre-game whiffle ball/bbq or anything? it’s so great to hang out with everyone but meeting everyone and talking gets tough

Berkman vetoed a deal to the White Sox before accepting the NYY trade.

Have heard #Astros are paying $4 million of the $7.5 million Berkman is owed between 2010 salary and buyout,

The guys who did well as Loons

not doing so well facing tougher leagues. Will be curious to see how the Ruddy’s, Websters, and Wallachs do when they get moved up. Could be the pitching league MWL is skewing our opinions of these guys.

I dearly hope not.

Without our pitching prospects, our future is going to look very sketchy.

Seems to

some very quality hitters like Frank Thomas had some serious splits between DH and playing.

affect hitting in a negative way?

I mean the most recent example is Burrell right? But then again it could be that AL east pitching is much tougher than the NL

by EephusBlue on Jul 30, 2010 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s a focus thing mostly. You go from being in the game every minute to having 30 minutes between activity. Think about how someone at the home run derby puts up a sick first round then does nothing after the break. It’s essentially the same concept, but it’s on a nightly basis.

Here's the return for the Astros

Heard #Yankees are sending T-A reliever Mark Melancon and Low-A infielder Jimmy Paredes to #Astros for Berkman

Sources: While a #Dodgers trade for #Pirates LHP is not necessarily close, both clubs believe deal is genuine possibility.Previous tweet was on Maholm. #Dodgers also remain active on Lilly, a more established pitcher. Seem intent on getting one or other
