A Very Premature Look at the 2011 Dodgers
Obviously a lot of this can and will change if deadline moves are made and waiver pick-ups, and a lot of this is repetitive, but I thought it would somewhat helpful to have it all written down. Also, I’ve been looking for an excuse to write a FanPost for awhile. Estimates are in italics.
Starting Rotation (2/5 Locks)
Clayton Kershaw - $500,000
Chad Billingsley - $5,500,000
INTERNAL OPTIONS:
James McDonald - $450,000
John Ely - $450,000
Carlos Monasterios - $450,000
Charlie Haeger - $425,000
Scott Elbert - $410,000
POTENTIAL FREE AGENT TARGETS:
Cliff Lee (Probably a future member of the New York Yankees)
Carl Pavano
Livan Hernandez
Vicente Padilla
Hiroki Kuroda
Ted Lilly
Dave Bush
Freddy Garcia
Ben Sheets
Jake Westbrook
Rodrigo Lopez
Bullpen (3/7 Locks)
Jonathan Broxton - $7,000,000
Hong-Chih Kuo - $1,500,000
Kenley Jansen - $450,000
INTERNAL OPTIONS:
Travis Schlichting - $405,000
Jon Link - $450,000
Ronald Belisario - $420,000
Carlos Monasterios
James McDonald
and Scott Elbert among others
POTENTIAL FA TARGETS:
Too many list
Lineup (5/8 Locks)
1B - James Loney - $4,500,000
2B - Blake DeWitt - $450,000
SS - Rafael Furcal - $12,000,000
CF - Matt Kemp - $6,950,000
RF - Andre Ethier - $9,250,000
C: INTERNAL OPTIONS:
Russell Martin - $7,500,000 (He’s not worth what he’s due to be paid next year and should be non-tendered.)
A.J. Ellis - $405,000 (A back-up catcher at best)
POTENTIAL FA TARGETS:
Victor Martinez
John Buck
Rod Barajas
Bengie Molina
Gerald Laird
3B: INTERNAL OPTIONS
Casey Blake - $5,250,000 (Blake isn’t hitting well enough to be the starting 3B next year.)
Jamey Carroll - $2,500,000
POTENTIAL FA TARGETS:
Jorge Cantu
Juan Uribe
Ty Wigginton
Brandon Inge
Miguel Tejada
LF: INTERNAL OPTIONS:
Xavier Paul - $410,000
POTENTIAL FA TARGETS:
Scott Podsednik - $2,000,000 club option; currently has 439 of 525 PAs necessary to void option
Carl Crawford (It’s nice to want things)
Jayson Werth (Same thing)
Jonny Gomes
Jerry Hairston Jr.
Bench
Carroll/Blake, maybe Paul, + FA signings
Also Paying (6)
Manny Ramirez - $8,633,880
Vicente Padilla - $1,000,000
Juan Pierre - $3,500,000
Andruw Jones - $3,375,000
Jason Schmidt - $1,500,000
Brad Ausmus - $150,000
All told, the Dodgers are on the books for about $85 million next season, about $78 million if they non-tender Martin and Sherrill. If the payroll is the same as it was at about $96 million last year (though there is no reason to believe that is the case), the Dodgers could have up to $18 million to play with in the offseason. They’ll probably try to re-sign one of Padilla or Kuroda and get someone like Ted Lilly on a one-year deal and leave the the fifth spot open for young guys for most of the year.
They’ll probably hold their nose with Paul or Podsednik (or someone of his ilk) in LF and either Blake or Carroll at third. Martin though will probably prove to be too expensive, and while it’d be nice if they could get V-Mart or Buck, they’ll probably do a platoon of some sort with some scrubs.
Thoughts?

What do you think??
Louise Bourgoin: The hottest French actress I've ever seen <3
No way Werth takes 3/40
He wants 6 or 7 years, most likely. This is his shot at a big deal.
I also dont see how we non tender Martin. There are very few better defensive catchers and he can still get on base at a high pace(how many catchers have a career 365 OBP?). He would easily get 7M on the market, and the Dodgers(I hope) arent dumb enough to ditch him for John Buck…

So Gomes could be platoon with Paul il LF??
Sign him for 2 years and 10 000 000 $

potentially
but the question is does Paul need a platoon? I dont have the splits with me, so I may be wrong, but I dont know if A. it is worth it or B. If Gomes would accept a platoon

I would advise against paying $7.5 million for two relievers.

agree
I didnt pay attention to that, but relievers are too flimsy to give them millions unless they are in the level of Kuo, Broxton, H. Bell, etc. Look at Sherrill…

An Even More Brief Look at the 2011 Dodgers
Need: Three SP and a LF, minimum
Have: “nobody that fits between Billingsley and the low minors”
Must: Drink gin
The Omar Moreno of this blog
People, we SHOULD NOT sign an outfielder to more than one year.
Robinson, and Sands are not too far off. Lots of promising outfielders in the lower levels. If we are going to give allot of money to an outfielder, it should be to Kemp or Ethier.
Paul should be able to partially solve the outfield whole next year, once Robinson/Sands are ready, he could be a good 4th oufielder long term, to his chagrin.
Loney is still the guy at first for the Dodgers, but if there is a chance to land one of A Gonzalez, Fielder, Pujols, Dodgers need to go for it.
With Dewitt now gone, we should be hoping Carrol takes over instead of Theriot. Beyond that Dejesus has a chance at being average, and Pedroza seems like he could reach the majors by 2012, he is average/below average as well though.
3rd is a gaping whole, now and long term for the Dodgers. To mitigate our loss there I propose signing Beltre to a 3 or 4 year deal. Ethier that or trade for someone like Alex Gordon.
SS if Furcal through 2012, longer if he is retained, though I consider him a darkhorse 2nd base candidate in the future.
The most important thing pitching wise is keeping Kershaw and Bills away from free agency. I could care less about what else happens, because if we can keep them, our starting prospects will reach the majors at some point to fill the rest of the rotation.
Healthy Broxton, Kuo, Jansen should dominate. The rest of the bullpen SHOULD be easy, but Ned is making things hard on himself with the likes of the Ortizi and such.
The bench should always be built internally first, with low wage veterans bargains filling out the rest.
