Billingsley Looks To Extend Scoreless Streak Against Giants

LOS ANGELES CA - JULY 21: Chad Billingsley #58 of the Los Angeles Dodgers throws a pitch against the San Francisco Giants on July 21 2010 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

Chad Billingsley get the ball on short rest today, as the Dodgers take on the Giants in the second game of their series at AT&T Park. Since giving up three home runs in the first two innings on Memorial Day to Arizona, Billingsley has thrown 55 2/3 innings without allowing another home run. He also has a current streak of 15 consecutive scoreless innings.

Barry Zito gets the call for the Giants, making his fourth start against the Dodgers this season. In the previous three starts, he has given up a total of five runs in 20 2/3 innings (a 2.18 ERA), but the Dodgers have managed to win all three games.

The trade deadline will hit right before the game starts, so I'm sure news will break between now and then. The White Sox have asked about Manny Ramirez, the Dodgers are talking to the Cubs about Ted Lilly and (gulp) Ryan Theriot. Expect chaos in the next few hours.

Looking at the Padres trade, I have no clue what St. Louis did. They get a ok starting pitcher and give up a really good outfielder. They downgrade their offense and dont add much at all to their staff. Really confusing.

11:35pm: The Dodgers asked the White Sox for Dayan Viciedo in exchange for Ramirez, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com on Twitter. The Manny market is heating up, according to Yahoo’s Tim Brown on Twitter. The Rays, White Sox and a mystery team are all involved. The Dodgers are considering dealing Manny, according to Brown, who explains that the Dodgers are not shopping him. The left fielder is said to be open to a trade.

Does anyone else think

that acquiring Lilly and trading away Manny would be counterproductive and misleading? They want Lilly to help for this season but at the same time are giving away their best hitter.

by kngoworld on Jul 31, 2010 10:38 AM PDT reply actions

If Manny can come back healthy and the Dodgers make up ground, we’ll be glad we have him. If he comes back healthy and the Dodgers still fade, he could bring more on the waiver wire. The key is whether Ned thinks he can come back healthy enough to play left field? If not, he goes today.

(still a little bit of the optimist in me hoping all these twits are unfounded rumor)

Phil

I’m just going to run your story on the Lilly deal, with updated trade parameters once it goes down.

Here I was all copacetic about getting Lilly

But the parameters of this trade blew that all out of thw ater.

Yeah so far it looks 2 for 1… Lily and riot for DeWitt.. Is that a real thing?

by Erik951 on Jul 31, 2010 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

i think i'm gonna go bang my head against a wall

until i can get stupid enough to see this from Ned’s point of view

by bucknellbruin on Jul 31, 2010 11:07 AM PDT reply actions

Ned can only take part of the blame some or most of the problem is the lack of funds available from the ownership he can only work with the tools made available for him

by vadodger on Jul 31, 2010 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

But Frank wants to make it look like he is trying everything possible for the PR angle.

by vadodger on Jul 31, 2010 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Then don't make the trade.

He’s been using that excuse for 3 season st right. Get a new gimmick.

by Tripon on Jul 31, 2010 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Now *THAT* I'd be on board with.

Are you just dreaming aloud or is there something out there about that?

well i read somewhere

that the dbacks were high on theriot and wanted him for johnson. Im looking for silver linings.

How can the Dodgers trade a useful part (Dewitt) for a rental that wont help the team get to the playoffs anyway?

Just awful.

Padres made a helluva deal.
Cardinals putting alot of faith in Jon Jay as well.

by Joey Joe on Jul 31, 2010 11:10 AM PDT reply actions

What was the Padres deal?

Padres got Ryan Ludwick
Cardinals got Jake Westbrook
Indians got prospects.

by Joey Joe on Jul 31, 2010 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions

They got Ludwick, great move for them, think the Cardinals screwed the pooch

thinking Westbrook will help or that Jay is a right fielder.

by Phil Gurnee on Jul 31, 2010 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Ahhhh just saw that. Prospects any good?

Oh well. I’m not sure that’s a deal that is a clear win for anyone, but helps Padres most on the surface.

Jon Jay had the 2nd highest OPS in July in major league baseball.
He’s alot cheaper than Ludwick going forward.

Westbrook should be good in the NL. They needed another starter since Penny/Lohse are done for the year.

Riot has a country music festival on Wednesday… Trade might hurt that..LOL thats what they care about..

by Erik951 on Jul 31, 2010 11:10 AM PDT reply actions

Their still is hope

Like everyone else I don’t like the idea of shipping DeWitt in the Lilly trade, but we all know why it happened and until McCourt leaves or the Dodgers are sold we will continue to see moves like this……However, the Dodgers still have some control over their potential Wild Card chances:

6 against the Phils, 3, against the Cincy, 8 against the Giants and 10 against the Pods.

Deal done. #Cubs sending Lilly & Theriot to Cubs for Blake DeWitt & minor lgers Brett Walch & Kyle Smit. LA also gets $2.5M.

Correction by Stark

JAYSON STARK
Prospect going to Cubs is pitcher Brett Wallach, not Walch. Deadline Day Typo

by mrboma on Jul 31, 2010 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Is Brett the catcher or the pitcher??

If he’s the pitcher I’m still pissed, but not as much.

Tyler Kepner on the Trade

Don’t let Lilly’s 3-8 record fool you. He’s been steady for the Cubs, allowing no more than three earned runs in 12 of his last 15 outings. He joins a rotation with Clayton Kershaw, Vicente Padilla, Chad Billingsley and Hiroki Kuroda – a strong group of starters as the Dodgers try to make up a seven-game deficit in the N.L. West.

Second baseman Ryan Theriot has steady declined since 2008, but he’s not bad, and he has a lot more experience as an everyday player than Blake DeWitt. And we all know that experience means a lot to the Dodgers’ manager, Joe Torre.

by mrboma on Jul 31, 2010 11:35 AM PDT reply actions

As you are barfing

Theriot has 132 more AB’s than Dewitt in that period of time, Dewitt has 5 more doubles, 2 more triples, HR’s are the same, 11 more BB’s, and SLG is 25 points higher. Remember that Theriot plays in a far more hitter friendly ballpark!
