oh my

what about when we traded for casey blake…
those were far worse trades
by matthewmafa on Jul 31, 2010 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions
I didn't understand how good Santana was in 08, and we were chasing a bad D'Backs team in a weak NL West division.
In 09, we tried to shore up a great bullpen and try to beat the Phillies using lefties.
Obviously both trades did not had to be made, but in context somewhat justifiable.
This trade is just retarded and shows Colletti’s weaknesses as a GM. For the fuck trades for Ryan Theriot? Who?
you need to get over the ryan theriot thing
we traded for ted lilly… ryan theriot was a throw in and a stop gap at 2nd base

Probably a couple of days of Anderson starting in place Ethier. Theriot will be here in time to start tomorrow against Matt Cain

If money was not an issue
we got the best 5th starter in baseball and replaced one second baseman with glaring holes for another 2nd baseman with glaring holes. If the Dodgers had any chance at all for a playoff spot I’d love this trade. Whatever Roit gives up in OB he might gain back in defense. Not sure how Roit’s 2nd base defense is, but he’s a SS now playing 2nd base so I’m just going to go out on a limb and say his range will be a hell of a lot better then DeWitt’s.
Anyway, I’ve always been a big Lilly fan, glad he’s on the team, hope he enjoys pitching in Dodger Stadium. Ned is simply not a fan of our infield prospects moving Bell, DeWitt, Abreu within a 12 month period.
Some posters have pointed out that the Padres improved with trading anyone in their top 10 prospects but we gave up a major league 2nd baseman. If DeWitt was a prospect would he be any higher then 10th? Seems to me he would be rated right along Xavier Paul. Seems to me if you have the power the DeWitt has you simply have to be a great defensive 2nd to make up for it and he ain’t that guy.
Time to get over the trade and get ready to for Aug/Sep baseball.

“Time to get over the trade”? First of all, it just happened. Secondly, they’re both stupid trades (the Dotel one taking the stupid cake), which at best marginally improve the team and don’t in ANY way address the team’s glaring weakness, which is offense. Thirdly, they’re giving away cheap and valuable players for high priced rentals who we’re not even going to consider offering arbitration to, so we’ll get nothing in return when they leave, in order to re-arrange the deck chairs for a season in which, depending on which playoff odds site you prefer, we have about a 5-10% chance of even reaching the playoffs in the first place.
Yeah, I hope the moves end up somehow magically paying off, but it seems pretty dumb looking at it right now, and in light of the past couple of weeks of frustration, it’s the bow on the package of annoying futility that the Dodgers have become.

Dejan Kovacevic reports that Octavio Dotel will make $3.25 M in 2010, with a $4.5 M option in 2011. That option includes a $250 K buyout.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Well you asked how did we improve the defense so that seems like an
obvious answer, so how can you ask “how”?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
idk
what does it matter….
i was wondering why u thought our defense got better…
maybe cause lilly and dotel strike out batters and thats less balls in play…
so what does it matter why i asked how
So on the positive side of the world.. Our pitching staff has been solidified… But how will we score runs???
In a way, the trades have changed nothing
The point on which the 2010 playoffs turn is this: Are Ethier and Kemp gonna hit and will Manny be healthy? If the answers are yes, the Dodgers have a good shot, and if no, they don’t.
The Omar Moreno of this blog
by Humma Kavula on Jul 31, 2010 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions
But if they do
having Lilly and Dotel will make it easier. Would you rather Ned bet that our offense will forever be in the crapper and not have anything ready for when it comes around?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Sort of, yes
Like I’ve been saying all along, the 2011 situation makes it very tricky. You can’t buy for a marginal playoff team at the expense of the future when the next two years are so dicey. The upgrade of Lilly and Dotel helps, sure. But they aren’t the difference in the playoffs if the core doesn’t hit.
The Omar Moreno of this blog
by Humma Kavula on Jul 31, 2010 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions
But if the core does start hitting in the last 60 games
we are going to be happy we have Lilly going every fifth game, and Dotel there to get the ball to the best back end bullpen in baseball right now.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Like I say, it’s complicated. Sure, the trades make the Dodgers marginally better in ‘10. But (a) it’s coming at a time when playoff hopes are hanging by slim threads, and (b) the trades make the 2011-12 teams worse. I wouldn’t have made them, but Ned can have the last laugh if the offense comes around in August-September and the team gets back in the race.

McDonald
I figured McDonald would get traded. It didn’t seem like Torre had faith in him at all. We weren’t ever going to give him a fair chance and im glad he will get a fair chance with the Pirates….. However I think this is a horrible trade because McDonald can do just as well out of the bullpen as Dotel and can be a good starter if we were patient enough to give him some innings. Add in Lambo and this is on par with Santana trade
This trade made us better in 2010, which is more than I can say for the Lilly trade.

The worst part to me is that we don’t have much money to play with next year, and we’re gonna throw a big chunk of that at Octavio Dotel. There should have been lessons learned about giving four million to a reliever.

Your hyperbole is stupefying

Fickle, easy to find. WTF WTF
Well it looks like McDonald is a relief pitcher
so that is one for one and Lambo looks like a poor excuse for a corner outfielder or 1st baseman.
All in all the Dodgers did not touch anyone of their top 10 prospects so those claiming the future is over because of these deals are simply dealing with hyperbole.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
It’s not that the future is over, it’s that this trade is stupid and pointless. McDonald is a young, cheap relief pitcher who is probably as good as Dotel, so we traded him, PLUS a prospect, poor excuse or not, for an expensive, old relief pitcher. Tell me how that makes any sense.

I am a big fan of Dotel. I can’t say I was thrilled with the price, but I do really like the back end of the bullpen right now.
They're both flawed players, but Lambo wasn't going to beat out Sands and Robinson for jobs in the OF.
Elbert might be bullpen material all said and done.
might??
he is at best bullpen material..
Dotel’s age bothers me.
And I’m bummed that Lambo/McDonald werent able to garner more. Those two a couple years ago were big time prospects.
His age
and the fact that he now has a mutual option on ‘11. If he opts out, or if the Dodgers decline him, then it’s a useless trade.

Money
how much did we spend on the trades… we took on all of Pod which was alittle less than 2 mill i think…. about 2 million in the lilly/theriot trade…. and im not sure about Dotel…. Do we have any money to temp Zach Lee

I would not have made these deals, but since we did we have to hope the offense comes around, Manny stays healthy, and the Phillies/Giants don’t run away and hide from us. We won’t be able to do anything about the Phillies but we will have a say in the Padre’s and Giants.
In 20 days Ned can simply move Lilly/Manny/Casey/Dotel on waivers but in retrospect we were still to close to simply stand pat for a team who simply can’t give up on Aug 1st.

I saw a parent teaching their 3 yr old kid to say “Beat LA” on a tram here once. They really get off on hating on LA beyond just the rivalry.

It just occurred to me that the Dodgers could have a bunch of draft picks if they offered arbitration to Kuroda, Padilla, Lilly.
That is pointless path
but Padilla is not a type A is it, and Kuroda can’t be either give how much time he missed last year, or are you saying they are all Type A’s?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
All starters on major league rosters at the end of the season are ranked, using the following categories:
Total games (total starts + 0.5 * total relief appearances)
IP
Wins
W-L Percentage
ERA
Strikeouts
Stats for the prior 2 years are used.
I think Lilly has a lot of work to do to keep Type A status

by hee came hee seop'd he choi'd on Jul 31, 2010 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't see how he's a better asset
He might be marginally better this year, but I highly doubt that he’ll be that much better. McDonald is a far better asset because he’s like 25 and not arb-eligible yet, right? This trade has me really confused because it seems like they gave up McDonald for a more expensive and much older version of a relief pitcher who will likely be similar in value. Plus Lambo.
Colletti on Dotel: “With 2 All-Stars in Broxton and Kuo, in addition to our other veteran arms, this gives us a solid, experienced bullpen.”
Ned Colletti never had a team where he didn’t heavily depend on veterans.
Well at least Dotel >>> Taschner!

fucking Bison. He needs to spend all winter in the cage just recognizing pitches. Thats his biggest flaw, and he cant become elite unless that improves (although its probably too late to develop that skill)

I like Cetera.
That skill is something that is really hard to develop this late in development. Its just hard to become a more patient hitter and recognize breaking balls better in your 20’s.

First, Tripon, I’ve liked your comments the past year but you’ve changed and not in a good way
Second, We trimmed the tree with everyone but DeWitt being expendable IMO.Hug your prospects but trim the tree. JMac and Lambo especially look like head cases. We have others and on DeWitt…you guys do remember that it takes two to tango and you have to give up something in a trade,no?Blame McCourt most of all for acting like a small market team.
Third, win probability and all, really we have a ton of games left and now we have a complete team that is better…sometimes a complete team with now one of the games best LHPs may click. 2b is a wash, pen is solid

by Josie Becker on Jul 31, 2010 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm speechless.
If they lose this game I still blame the ol culprit, no offense again. 2 runs shouldn’t lose you the game
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
The offense failed massively today
Furcal watched strike 3 in each of his last 2 at bats and was thrown out at 3rd with 1 out, Kemp struck out on a bad pitch in the dirt in his last at bat (though nearly hit one out before that), Loney grounded out weakly to 2b with Kemp on second…just AA hitting at it’s finest.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Still if Broxton does his job we win 1 - 0, so while the offense failed, they did enough
to win if our Closer, Closes the game.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
So once the Dodgers have the lead, the offense has done enough, and if the club loses after that point, it is on the pitching staff?
by Michael White on Jul 31, 2010 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions
Pretty much. 1 - 0 lead in the 8th with four outs to do, yes I put that on the Closer.
A one run lead doesn’t matter if it is 10 – 9 or 1 – 0 you have to hold it.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Blaming the closer is fine I guess, but the idea that the offense did enough doesn’t track for me.
by Michael White on Jul 31, 2010 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions
It's the same as the kicker debate in football
Yes, the kicker didn’t lose you the game by missing the field goal. But that’s what his job is to do. Lots of other people didn’t do their job, but Broxton definitely didn’t do his.
How would you define your approach to management, apart from being brilliant?
by Josie Becker on Jul 31, 2010 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah I’d rather Broxton can just hold the lead, which should be no problem, but the offense won’t stop failing. If they had scored 3 runs, that’s only 2 extra hits with a runner on second, we could still have won that game.
Broxton deserves a good portion of the blame, but my vote goes to the inept offense.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"

Big market. Big revenue. Minimal team.

True. A 3-2 slider by Brox at least has Burrell off balance. But, Burrell cant do much damage if Broxton locates the ball. He just missed right over the heart, thigh high.
