Here's the Thing....

The non-wavier trade has come and gone and the Dodgers made several trades. Do they improve the team? As a whole, its probably a net positive. However, Ned Colletti traded a bunch of prospects from the farm system and traded Blake DeWitt in order for teams to pay for salary. I expressed anger at the moves in the main threads at True Blue L.A.  because I believe this team isn't good enough to warrant these moves, the division is too competitive, and the wild card is the largest crap shoot every year.

Dodgers are 7.5 game behind the Padres for the NL West lead and 3rd in the division standings, and 5.5 behind the Giants and 5th in the standards, (After the Dodgers lost on 07/31/10). Can the Dodgers win the NL West and Wild Card? Yes, its possible. Do I think they can do it? Honestly, no.

However, maybe Colletti and the organization think they can, and they made the trades to go all in and think they can make up 5 games in two months. I don't agree with them, and I think the gap is too large to improve on because if the Dodgers needed guys like Lilly and Dotel (Forget about Theriot, its' my opinion the guy is useless and will be whenever or where ever he plays.), it was going to be two months ago when the Dodgers were playing better and the division winner was less clear.

In the end, the Padres are for real, the Giants are as well, and the Dodgers? Well, I have to lean closer that the ground can't be made up. I hope I'm wrong, I really do. Hopefully I am.

Agree

Lilly is not a big name, not anymore, and the others guys are to my point of view standard players that will make any impact.

We will improve a little, but not enough to win the division or the Wild Card race.

I hope Torre and Colleti leaves the team very soon.

you hit it on the nail pretty much

I would be fine if they traded for Lily months earlier or even a few weeks ago when division was still up for grabs but now there is almost no point. Sure he provides stability in the back of the rotation, but the real issue is the lack of offense or power, which is why I dont see us going anywhere this year. We just dont stack up to what the other NL contenders have. What makes it worse is we had to toss in DeWitt who had a good OBP and some upside for an older, shittier player to make the deal work.

Adam Morrison has more rings than Lebron, Bosh, and Wade combined?

I definitely think we improved the team.

And I still think our division is still up for grabs. Im very sad to see DeWitt go, I really liked the kid, and admired his work ethic. He was going to do whatever he could to help the club. I like Lilly, but not at the price of DeWitt, especially if its a rental. But anyways..

Ive been a Dodger fan for 34 years. In my 34 years being a Dodger fan, I have never once, seen a Dodger team that has won it easily. Divorce or not, this is still our Los Angeles Dodgers. Even if we were in last, I would want to go out with a fight. The Dodgers have had this core team going for a while, DeWitt and J-Mac were part of that core, albeit a smaller part. Maybe this is a message for some of the other guys, that Ned will deal if you arent performing. It was a tough loss to swallow today.. Bills took the ball today like an Ace would, on 3 days rest, and dominated. As bad as our hitting has been, it wont continue, and if this is a sign that Kershaw and Billingsley have become what we expected them to be.. With Lilly, Kuroda and Padilla, we looking good as a staff. The pen has been shored up nicely, despite the cost, with Dotel, and Jansen. The offense needs to come around and it will.

It will be nice to watch them come from behind this year and prove the doubters wrong. Its better than watching them sputter down the stretch like they have in recent years. Im not predicting anything, but theres still a third of a season left. Its time for Dodger baseball as we know it. I know evryones frustrated, but lets see how this thing works out. Go Dodgers!!!!

Real late here and you'll never see it but 33 years agao was 1977

The Dodgers sprinted out to a 7.5 game lead in April and never looked back. The lead fell to 6.5 in mid-June for two whole days, never below 8.5 after the AS break and they won by 10. That was winning it easy.

I did see it.

Alright, it was easy once. But I was only one year old at the time, so excuse me for not remembering :) LOL!

I took your claim of
Ive been a Dodger fan for 34 years. In my 34 years being a Dodger fan…

literally. Personally, I don’t count my fandom from the cradle, but only from my conscious memory. I wouldn’t have bothered with 1977 if you had written “27 years” or some such thing.

I do count mine.

I went to my first game at 3 months dude. My parents have pictures. I’ll tell you what though, I was never not a Dodger fan, so… yeah im sticking to my 34 years. I didnt mean for that post to start a debate as to when your fandom can actually start. My point was that it dosent come easy very often, and the team is going to have to fight its way out. NEVER SURRENDER!! Go DODGERS!

I think this is totall disregarding that with Manny, this is just good as any team in the NL

The biggest problem is the hole they’ve dug, and we don’t know when or if we are getting Manny back healthy. Basically from the beginning of the year the Dodgers were trying to do this on the cheap, and things haven’t changed.

As far as the future, there aren’t any holes in the Dodger organizations that can’t be fixed by money. This is probably the last chance to make a run in the McCourt era. But if this team were sold in the offseason, a new owner could put this team into very good shape relatively easily.

by Cool Dudes on Jul 31, 2010 11:04 PM PDT reply actions

but even if that were the case

would MLB (ie. Selig & the crew) allow the Dodgers to be sold to a suitor that actually had money? Look at what’s gone on with the Rangers.

As for these trades, I’ve pretty much abandoned defending Colletti. I’m nearly certain that in a more ideal situation, he’d rather just make trades without begging for cash, so he can hold on to these prospects. But at the end of the day, he’s the one who pulled the trigger on them to “improve” the team. As I said somewhere else, at least Blake and Sherrill helped down the stretch in ‘08 and ’09, but given where the Dodgers are now, there is almost no chance that’ll be the case this time around. What little chance there may be is far, FAR outweighed by the upside of all these young guys going elsewhere.

Too many unknowns..

Sorry to see DeWitt gone especially for some mediocre players. But all of my favorites were taken..Lee and Halladay. We probably could have traded for another decent bat in the lineup, but whatever. There’s still a chance the Dodgers can make the playoffs..Manny’s return or the team starts hitting. Anyway, I’m still watching.. I don’t see the rest of the NL looking like they are invincible.

I agree with you, but . . .

The one line of reasoning that has some sway with me is the following: If we can somehow get it down from 7-8 games to 3-4 by September, anything’s possible. It’s the calculus of hope, I suppose, but considering our foes are SD & SF, it’s not like we’re going against the ‘27 Yankees here. Mostly, my feelings of "it’s over" stem from the overall weakness of the Dodgers’ performance this year. Of course an eight-game winning streak puts us right back in the mix; I’ve seen little to suggest such a surge is likely.
