All-Star Selection Open Thread

The All-Star rosters will be announced today, at 9 a.m. on TBS. The Dodgers in question are:

Andre Ethier: likely to be starting in right field. The last Dodger outfielder to start an All-Star Game was Reggie Smith in 1980. Darryl Strawberry was elected to start in 1991, but was injured and did not play.

Jonathan Broxton: should be a lock for the bullpen

Rafael Furcal: has only played in 50 of 80 games, but he is hitting a robust .338/.384/.500 and should beat out Jose Reyes, et al, for the backup spot behing Hanley Ramirez

Hong-Chih Kuo: history isn't kind to setup men, but he has a 1.11 ERA while striking out over 11 men per nine innings

Clayton Kershaw: he's 8-4 with a 3.02 ERA, but the NL is stacked with starters

I guess that Mays character cut into Duke's starting gigs

Youngest Dodger All-Star Pitchers

Fernando Valenzuela (1981) 20 yrs, 281 days
Ramon Martinez (1990) 21 yrs, 110 days
Fernando Valenzuela (1982) 21 yrs, 254 days
Ralph Branca (1948) 22 yrs, 189 days
Don Drysdale (1959) 22 yrs, 349 days

I think Kershaw would be a long shot, but he would be 22 years, 116 days on July 13, slotting him as the fourth youngest Dodger All-Star pitcher

Nice research by these guys….Ethier hurt his thumb?

Hah hah that was Dennis Eckersely who said

Another blown moment by the Eck. ;-)

There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.

I mean, it is pretty easy to confuse Chase Utley and Andre Ethier.

Reserves announced already?

What in the world are they talking about now?

by robotmadeofnails on Jul 4, 2010 9:13 AM PDT reply actions

Jose Reyes made it as backup SS

by Eric Stephen on Jul 4, 2010 9:17 AM PDT reply actions

not a fan of that choice

i know furcal has missed significant time, but c’mon…

Reyes: .277/.321/.415, 6 HR 32 RBI
Furcal: .338/.384.500, 4 HR 28 RBI

Raffy’s average is better than Reyes’ OBP…

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

by bucknellbruin on Jul 4, 2010 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Furcal’s surge was too late, but it’s just a terrible omission.

Rhodes over Kuo is bullshit

by Eric Stephen on Jul 4, 2010 9:18 AM PDT reply actions

almost happier kuo gets 3 days off

would’ve been cool for him to make it though

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

3 homers this year

Mauer’s power is nonexistant this season

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

by bucknellbruin on Jul 4, 2010 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Well,

He would probably also give All-Star selections as justification for the Hall Of Fame.

by KempKershaw on Jul 4, 2010 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, two non-closer relievers made it

and none were Kuo.

Young as the only D-Back hurt, because McCutchen got squeezed, and Evan Meek was the token Pirate.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 4, 2010 9:25 AM PDT reply actions

Dodgers get screwed twice

Kuo>Rhodes
Kuo has pitched less innings but has been more dominant

Furcal>Infante
This isn’t even close, who chose the Braves version of Jam Carroll

by spike238e on Jul 4, 2010 9:26 AM PDT reply actions

Omar Infante?

Please tell me you mean Martin Prado the 2B?

by KempKershaw on Jul 4, 2010 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Infante made it as a reserve, Martin Prado is starting at 2B

by Tripon on Jul 4, 2010 9:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Infante?

He’s on the Braves, right?

Damn, and it “counts”, right? haha

/not paying attention to picks for the record

by KempKershaw on Jul 4, 2010 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Nope

Infante made it as a reserve, and for a utility player Carroll has better numbers

by spike238e on Jul 4, 2010 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Got to see that live

It was funny watching Angels fans groan and moan about it.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

Joey Votto got screwed

by Eric Stephen on Jul 4, 2010 9:28 AM PDT reply actions

That what rankles me about the Ryan Howard selection. He keeps on getting picked for this damn thing due to his Phillies connections when he’s not even a top 10 1B.

by Tripon on Jul 4, 2010 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Even Charlie Manuel couldn’t justify Wilson Valdez and Juan Castro as all stars. :)

by Tripon on Jul 4, 2010 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Reserve Selection Process

I forget how the selection process works?
Don’t the players get a choice as well as Manuel?

by spike238e on Jul 4, 2010 9:33 AM PDT reply actions

The players pick 16 All-Stars on each team, I believe. Fans pick starting position players. Managers only pick eight. Then final fan vote for the 34th player.

by JonWeisman on Jul 4, 2010 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions

Yep

players pick 8 pitchers and 8 reserves. They select 5 starters and 3 relievers

by Eric Stephen on Jul 4, 2010 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Astros CFMichael Bourn will be making his first All-Star Game appearance after being selected as a reserve by NL manager Charlie Manuel of the Phillies

by bisonenergy on Jul 4, 2010 9:34 AM PDT reply actions

If we beat Charlie Manual

we wouldn’t have to listen to these complaints. I blame Broxton.

If Infante the first all-star

since Sharperson who is on the team is not on even on an eight man NL roto team?

In 176 PAs.

Seriously, this is amazing.

by Tripon on Jul 4, 2010 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions

The PA is what is disturbing not the production

This must be the result of the must win scenario since he can play every position and they will just hold him out in case they need him somewhere at the end of the game but that is not what the all-star selections are about. Thank You Bud but making the game count, and allowing us to not see someone like Joey Votto but Omar Infante.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Jul 4, 2010 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

That’s exactly what it is.

by JonWeisman on Jul 4, 2010 9:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Jamey Carroll

If that was the case and they wanted versatility, honestly Carroll has better numbers with a .291/.391./.331 this is a joke

by spike238e on Jul 4, 2010 9:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Are we doing that final five thing again this year?

Or did Battlestar Galactica sue for copyright infringement?

Look at that, he hit the f*cking bull! Guy gets a free steak!
