Dodgers were in Attendance for Cliff Lee's Gem

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/MLB-latest-news-from-July-070110

The Yankees, Dodgers and Cardinals were among the clubs with a scout in attendance at Cliff Lee’s start in Detroit on Sunday afternoon.

Lee simply dominated the Tigers: 8 IP, 9 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11Ks. Hopefully this means the Dodgers are actually going for it at the trade deadline. However, it has been reported multiple times that the Dodgers have little to no money to spend at the deadline.

probably revelant…sands another homerun. there’s that big bopper the mariners would want for Lee…

It’s a good thing Sands isn’t a switch hitter

by pdotmac1 on Jul 4, 2010 5:05 PM PDT reply actions

Sands' rise reminds me of Mark Reynolds when came from

obscurity and rose through the dbacks system. Pretty similar type of hitters and background.

I'm afraid if the M's wants Sands...

Reynolds '06 in the cal league and Sands '10 in mwl are identical

Both 22. Cal league is advanced A, but a better hitting environment.

333/432/646, 40/61 BB/K in 283 PAs for Sands.

333/419/667, 41/72 BB/K in 314 PAs for Reynolds.

If he keeps this up in AA for another 200 ABs, Sands’ year will look more like Matt Wieters 2008 that basically broke every projection system.

Asking him to keep up this pace is unreasonable though.

by mattsd on Jul 4, 2010 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

eh

we can be unreasonable with this guy ;) He has simply gone nuts.

Question for anyone, did Sands always have this potential and didnt know what to do with it(ie, sleeper) or is this completely out of nowhere? Also, because we know the Dodgers like to skip AAA, could he be in the OF to start 2011? Or is it more likely to be Robinson/Paul?

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Jul 4, 2010 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

sands

he always have shown pop. last year, dodgers started him off at great lakes and he struggled. He struggled so much they sent him down to Odgen. Then, something happened. It just clicked for him. He crushed it in Odgen, got promoted back up to great lakes, and didn’t really slow down. SO basically, for a full year now, hes been crushing it.

As a 25th round draft pick that only cost a plane ticket and 5k signing bonus, this is probably not something the organization expected.

by npurcell on Jul 4, 2010 11:40 PM PDT up reply actions

thanks

idk if you know, but when he was drafted was he a “potential power bat who needs to figure it out” or was he just another guy who they took a shot on.

I will say, the 25th round has been nice… Webster and Sands

I think i would like to keep Sands and give up lambo if Ms want a booper..
Sands could be huge for us…in OF or 1b…

Lambo + Russell + Eovaldi + Martin + Van Slyke for Lee??

i think i'd do it

dunno if the M’s would though

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

by bucknellbruin on Jul 4, 2010 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions

that’s a whole lot of top draft picks/prospects to give up for 2 months of a guy. Especially considering he was traded for 4 prospects, then 3. It would stand to reason that it should take 2 prospects (1 good, 1 fringe) to get lee.

by G.Scott on Jul 4, 2010 10:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd say...

the bats wouldn’t do it for them.

So it will cost a lot of prospects for 2 or 3 months...

Who can be involved in that trade??

Louise Bourgoin: The hottest French actress I've ever seen <3

by Jojo93160 on Jul 4, 2010 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know,

but they want a bat, and none of those bats have much trade value.

And we don't have many bats prospects...

Sands, Songco, Lambo…

Sands/Gordon/Robinson...

or involve a 3rd team.

by uclatroy on Jul 4, 2010 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Not all of them...

but one of them would have to be the starting point in a deal.

If we trade for Cliff Lee,

it’s basically, “Whatever you’d like, Jack Z.” Sands, Withrow, Jansen, Miller . . .

by kinbote on Jul 4, 2010 8:42 PM PDT reply actions

With Lee as a Dodger, it gives them a much better chance of making the playoffs and doing well in the playoffs

If we have to trade:

Gordon
E. Martin
Robinson
Eovaldi
Van Slyke (or some other bat, possibly De Jesus? Though I know these 2 are not equal value)

these guys to do so, then I’m all for it. When we have to get Miller, Withrow, Webster, and Sands involved, I’m not so willing.

I don't think the deal can happen

unless Seattle thinks Xavier Paul can be the centerpiece.

As good as Sands could be, he is still too far away from what Seattle reportedly wants.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 5, 2010 12:11 AM PDT up reply actions

they want 2011/2012

Sands is in AA… holding his own(understatement of the century). Ackley is in AA, struggling. Hed be on the track… still i want to keep him, get rid of Loney or replace Manny

lol
As good as Sands could be, he is still too far away from what Seattle reportedly wants.

reportedly wants to what they will actually receive is a whole different story.

by npurcell on Jul 5, 2010 12:21 AM PDT up reply actions

If we trade for Lee (or anyone), there should be a small list of players that we say "fuck off" to if they ask for them

Miller
Sands
Webster
Withrow

The first 3 I would flat out say no. Withrow I would want to keep, but if the deal was right I’d send him in a trade.

by Ivdown on Jul 5, 2010 12:01 AM PDT reply actions

Jansen?

or not because he is a reliever? I hate to say it, but he seems like he could be another Broxton…(i say I hate to say it because it is horrible to compare prospects to guys who are the best at their position.. but DAMN)

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Jul 5, 2010 12:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Because he's a reliever I'm fine with using him as the 2nd piece in a trade

I thought about putting him on this list as well, but I know if he was the lynch pin to the trade, and the Ms said include him or we are done, I would include him.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

by Ivdown on Jul 5, 2010 9:35 AM PDT up reply actions

If you include Jansen, the first piece should be less talented.

by silverwidow on Jul 5, 2010 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions

Like for example, you’re not going to trade Martin and Jansen. But you might consider Eovaldi and Jansen.

by silverwidow on Jul 5, 2010 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Martin and Jansen in a trade is fine

Withrow/Webster/Miller and Jansen…hell no.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

by Ivdown on Jul 5, 2010 11:59 AM PDT up reply actions

It depends on how you look at Martin. He’s walking a lot of guys in High A, but his K rates are still excellent. This tells me he has the stuff, he just needs to be more consistent with it.

In other words, I think he’s of the same ilk as Withrow/Webster/Miller.

by silverwidow on Jul 5, 2010 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

2010 FIPS

Martin: 4.05
Eovalid: 3.94
Miller: A: 4.02 AA: 4.05
Webster: 3.30
Pimentel: 3.30

by npurcell on Jul 5, 2010 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

to add more FIPs

Magill: 3.88
Wallach: 4.06
Withrow: 4.52

Just looking at end result of FIP, Martin/eovalid/Miller are all really similar, even though the paths they take are a little bit different. Webster and Pimentel are ballin’ right now with Magill not too far behind.

Withrow…I think he finishes the year strong and remains our #1 prospect.

by npurcell on Jul 5, 2010 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

also to prove my point about Withrow

still being our #1… last 10 starts:

53IP 51H 2HR 26bb 52k 3.23 ERA

Pretty good for a 21 yr old.

by npurcell on Jul 5, 2010 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, except for the 4.42 BB/9. He needs to drop that below 4.

by silverwidow on Jul 5, 2010 4:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I swear

I didnt understand why people were jumping on Withrow… every top starting pitching prospect that was signifcant in the past couple of years had horrible control. As long as he keeps the Ks up, he is ok, for now… the same reason I dont want to trade E. Martin.. Logan White called him the potentially right handed kershaw when he was drafted! That is crazy. Give the kid time to become consistent and he will be great.

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Jul 5, 2010 5:09 PM PDT up reply actions

LOL, I’m a huge Withrow fan. But doesn’t mean I can’t criticize his walk rate.

by silverwidow on Jul 5, 2010 5:45 PM PDT up reply actions

haha

I wasnt trying to jump on you at all. I was saying in general, I didnt understand why people got off the Withrow bandwagon after the first two months…

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Jul 5, 2010 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Who cares what Logan called him at the time?

There’s no chance someone would call him a right handed Kershaw now. Kershaw dominated the minors and Withrow, isn’t.

Not saying Withrow has to be Kershaw to have value, but comparing the 2 at this point seems absurd.

by Michael White on Jul 6, 2010 7:50 AM PDT up reply actions

I should expand

I said that because that was the type of potential they saw in him. And he has similar talents, high Ks, high walks, and at times, shows why people feel so highly, while other times he shows why some arent sure.

I wasnt comparing them, just saying the White said he had that type of potential when he was drafted… which is quite amazing

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Jul 6, 2010 11:43 PM PDT up reply actions

There needs to be xFIP for minor leaguers, especially with the parks they play in.

When I see FIP listed, I almost ignore it nowadays unless I get ground it against flyball rates and home run rates.
