Death Of One Thousand Paper Cuts; Dodgers, Ely Lose

These members of the U.S. Marine Corps - saluting during the national anthem - looked much sharper than John Ely did tonight.

John Ely was pestered by eight Florida singles (and one double), allowing all six Marlins runs in 2 2/3 innings.  The Dodgers scored in four different innings and Jeff Weaver and Ronald Belisario combined for 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, the latter throwing three innings in an economical 26 pitches, but Los Angeles could not overcome the deficit and fell 6 - 5.

In the eighth inning, an RBI double by James Loney plated Andre Ethier who had walked and put the tying run in scoring position, but Russell Martin's sharp comebacker to the mound was knocked down by ex-San Diego Padre Clay Hensley who easily threw to first to end the inning.

Non all-star shortstop Rafael Furcal hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning off winning pitcher Nate Robertson.

WP - Nate Robertson (6-6):  6 IP, 7 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), 1 walk, 2 strikeouts

LP - John Ely (4-6):  2 2/3 IP, 9 hits, 6 runs (5 earned), 1 walk, 3 strikeouts

S - Leo Núñez (18): 1 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs 0 walks, 1 strikeout

Nice recap

Nice meeting up with three quarters of the TBLA team tonight and the many other Dodger bloggers. :)

Great meeting you as well! Sorry we didn’t have more time to chat.

decent game in spite of the loss. cant be too upset about it.

by hee came hee seop'd he choi'd on Jul 5, 2010 10:34 PM PDT reply actions

I didnt follow the game closely as I was away

But my impression is this game coulda been alot different if things just broke a little differently. Correct or was it a complete loss? Seems like balls were smoked, just at people.

by EephusBlue on Jul 5, 2010 10:42 PM PDT reply actions

and if GA's liner was solidly hit

I will gladly eat my words from earlier (which were a reaction from having not seen the hit, only seeing the gameday result)

by EephusBlue on Jul 5, 2010 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

probably some babip bad luck involved, but Ely just wasnt very sharp. but hes the fifth starter so these things happen. I just hope Kuroda is back to form on Wednesday. We need all the help we can get..

by hee came hee seop'd he choi'd on Jul 5, 2010 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I think I woulda been more tolerable of tonight

If Hiroki hadn’t vomited that last start. I hope its just one of those things. It looked like Ely had trouble locating.

by EephusBlue on Jul 5, 2010 11:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Not only the fifth starter, but a rookie in his first half of big league ball. I’m always amazed that some expect him to be great every time out, and then drop him from the rotation immediately when he isn’t.

As for GA, I’ve been saying this since last year, he’s done. Ned needs to take him away from Torre just like a parent would take matches from his toddler.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 6, 2010 8:14 AM PDT up reply actions

seriously

if Torre and Colletti are serious when they way they’d rather Paul play everyday in AAA then call up Jay Gibbons. I know he’s not the best option, but if they must have that Veteranry candy shell on a player, then how about one that at least is showing he could hit. I think a .300 average in AAA could easily translate to over the Mendoza line in the show.

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 6, 2010 8:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I do think a case of plantar fascitis could be next in Anderson’s future.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 6, 2010 8:23 AM PDT up reply actions

I would like to add to my comment that I’d much rather have X-Paul on the team, as he has nothing left to prove at AAA.

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 6, 2010 8:23 AM PDT up reply actions

Jon had it right over at DodgerThoughts the other day. The need to nurse Manny through the rest of the season could easily give Paul another 150 ABs or so.

by OB12 on Jul 6, 2010 8:37 AM PDT up reply actions

So will we hear all about it tomorrow?

We looked after ourselves pretty well, but I noticed the absence of TBLA editors (less swearing than usual ;-)). It will be nice to hear about your in-the-park adventures tomorrow.

I missed the game due to the early start. Bummer we couldn’t catch up. But I’m confident we can take the series. That’s all that matters.

by Skunkburner on Jul 6, 2010 6:48 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

Yeah, but we’ve beaten him before. Josh Johnson is dirty.

by silverwidow on Jul 6, 2010 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

indeed

didn’t we face him last series with the fish?

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 6, 2010 9:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Yup. He got a no decision against Padilla.

by silverwidow on Jul 6, 2010 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions

We’ve beaten Johnson before too.

It was back in 2006 though…

by Michael White on Jul 6, 2010 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

I guess I meant we’ve beaten Ubaldo a lot.

by silverwidow on Jul 6, 2010 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I was at the game.

Ely was throwing strikes for the most part, but he didn’t have his curvball going, and the Marlins were able to sit on his fastball because of it. He also had some things go against him early. How about the Pen though? Weaver and Belisario combine for three shutout innings, and Raffy is continuing his awesomeness. Gotta good feeling about today, let’s go Dodgers!!!

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 6, 2010 7:29 AM PDT reply actions

I'm sad I couldn't make it last night

I totally spaced, even if I had the money, I would have had to be at home because it was my Dad’s birthday.

I didn’t get to see the game because of it, but I did get to see Die Hard. So, you know. that was fun.

by delias man on Jul 6, 2010 8:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Did anyone listen to Dodger Talk last night?

I only caught a bit of it on the way home from the game, but my parents were cracking up along with the hosts when Torre referred to Furcal as Fooky.

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 6, 2010 8:46 AM PDT reply actions

Rays might be after Cliff Lee

That’s today’s rumor.

If they offer Hellickson, it’s over (literally).

by silverwidow on Jul 6, 2010 9:02 AM PDT reply actions

Gammons thinks a third team and Upton are involved, FWIW.

by Little Blue Bicycle on Jul 6, 2010 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions

I heard a Lee-Upton swap, possible 3rd team involved.

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 6, 2010 9:12 AM PDT up reply actions

You going to postpone your vacation time if the big trades are made early?

by delias man on Jul 6, 2010 9:17 AM PDT up reply actions

No, stuff always happens during the last week. And I have other plans as well.

by silverwidow on Jul 6, 2010 9:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Crazy to give up Hellickson or Upton. I guess I’d have to see the whole trade, but the thought of it is a bit scary.

by Xeifrank on Jul 6, 2010 9:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Better chance they’d give up Wade Davis.

by silverwidow on Jul 6, 2010 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions

I do wonder what their future plans will be

since for the time being, they will not be getting protected draft picks and since they can’t afford to go over slot too many times, will they begin to trade prospects to get better.

Tampa is in a very tough market, their TV ratings went up but that marginalized by their small market and they are not drawing despite playing better.

Good to see he’s on the radar.

by silverwidow on Jul 6, 2010 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions

I saw Keith Law played the Billy Ashley card with you yesterday when you asked about Sands.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that “scout” he mentioned was himself. I don’t think he has checked him out.

by Julio Nievas on Jul 6, 2010 10:16 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Did he really?

that seems misplaced, they are not even close to the same type of player. I expect Keith Law never saw Billy Ashley play baseball. At least make a good comp, Ashley was drafted out of HS, was striking out at Kyle Russell levels in A ball, and was sucking in the major leagues by the age of 22.

Sands has a a K rate but he also has a walk rate and can run.

by meercatjohn on Jul 6, 2010 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Not really

It was more introductory. It was talking about how he hit only two HRs in the minor league HR derby, then hit one the next night in the AS game. Then the rest of the game he was pitched around. They also talked about how he dominated single A, then was moved up to AA and continued to hit.

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 6, 2010 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions

cool stuff

I know they said they are looking about both starting and relief pitching, but with Lindblom and Jansen waiting in the minors, can’t we look internally to help the bullpen?

interesting note about Kim Ng making her own deals without running them by Ned.

The famous

Marlon Anderson deal is one.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 6, 2010 10:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Really?

she traded a minor league pitcher for Anderson, and didn’t have to run any of it by the General Manager?

by meercatjohn on Jul 6, 2010 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions

That's one that came to mind.

You wanted an example, that’s the one I can think of.

Hey, I wasn’t there, someone should have asked a follow up question to that statement.

by bhsportsguy on Jul 6, 2010 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions

She didn’t address the group. Only Ned had a full fledged Q&A. Ng and Mannion came by and just walked the room and chatted with people in small groups.

by Michael White on Jul 6, 2010 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Which part is OTR? The Ned chat or the small group chat?

by silverwidow on Jul 6, 2010 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions

I wasn’t told anything was off the record in either the Q and A with Ned or the one off chats I had with people in the room.

I can’t speak for what instructions others got in their chats that I wasn’t involved in.

by Michael White on Jul 6, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I still don't understand the point

of off the record comments to the Blogging Community. Last years meeting was not off the record.

by meercatjohn on Jul 6, 2010 10:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Unless they had chats with Ned seperately, we were not given any instructions that the chat was off the record.

by Michael White on Jul 6, 2010 10:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Ah

maybe they had little conversations separate from you all in which the juicy stories he attests to were discussed.

by meercatjohn on Jul 6, 2010 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Everything Ned said was on the record. I will have a write up about it in a little while.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 6, 2010 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

I was just going by the "recap" that

Craig linked to. Seems the recap was not exactly accurate in which case shooting the messenger seems appropriate.

by meercatjohn on Jul 6, 2010 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I saw that he wrote that

not sure what he was talking about, except maybe a conversation he had with Kim Ng. I didn’t make my way over to her area until she was ready to leave, so I didn’t get to speak with her. I wanted to ask about some contract stuff.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 6, 2010 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

I forget

who was it that though Kim Ng was a waitress and asked her to get them a piece of cake?

by nolander on Jul 6, 2010 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions

ok, that's not it

there was this incident where this Dodger prospect was attending some party, and saw that there was cake, but he couldn’t find it. He saw Kim Ng, and mistaking her for a waitress, asked her to get him a piece of cake. She did, and then very politely told him who she was. He was very embarassed to say the least. I just can’t remember who it was.

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 6, 2010 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

I've never heard that story

and Kim would not seem to be the type to dress like a waitress. Having seen her a few times, she dresses conservative, even boring.

Baseball players aren’t known for their race and gender relations.

by regfairfield on Jul 6, 2010 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Here's the story
ustin Orenduff, a Dodgers first-round pick in 2004, apparently committed a major party foul during the college pitcher’s welcoming party at Dodger Stadium.

From Brian Akin:

"Excuse me, waitress? I just saw someone walk by with some cheesecake and I was wondering if you knew where I could find some for myself…"

The young lady seemed a bit startled. She was really locked-in on the game and was surprised at Justin’s request. Partly because the game was nearly over, and partly because she was not a waitress – she was the assistant GM. Kim Ng, always the cool customer, got up from her seat and replied, "I’ll see what I can do." She came back with a nice slice of cheesecake for Justin and returned to her seat.

by Tripon on Jul 6, 2010 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Awesome

but how was he not introduced to her at the beginning of the party? Wasn’t Kim involved in his contract negotiations since that is what she did? I guess she just dealt with his agent, but aren’t most people introduced to upper management at these events? Not claiming BS but it seems strange.

To bad about Akin, looks like he did not hook up with anyone and is not pitching.

They will both cost prospects

and obviously Oswalt is owed a bunch of money. I know a lot of people where speculation it might be possible to get the Astro’s to take on some salary. I don’t really think we have to go out and get either Oswalt or Lee, it might actually be nice to see Ned decide for once that he doesn’t need to trade for someone ever time the trading deadline is coming up.

This show's been going downhill since season 3

Yeah, I thought it was a relevant topic and I had a light-hearted wondering as well, but I didn’t think the snide-ass comment from meercatjohn was necessary. So there’s that.

welcome to the internet

although he was being rather snide

Would you bring a Russian flag to a 4th of July parade?

by regfairfield on Jul 6, 2010 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Depends

have I been drinking vodka?

I can tell you that vodka and 4th of July don’t mix.

I hardly think that's the same

I wore full Dodger regalia

to a Giants Cubs game in SF once. I’m sure you’re fine.

Cool, I only ever go to Dodger games, so wasn’t sure of the protocol.

by OB12 on Jul 6, 2010 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions

It depends on whether or not you enjoy being heckled or worse

A friend of mine is a Cubs fan. I go with him to Dodger games. Eventually he just got tired of the nasty comments, and decided it’s not worth it to him.

you know

maybe I should go to a Cards game in a Dodger Road jersey that has “Holliday’s Junk” on the back.

Cos that can only end well, amirite?

speaking of satorial gaffs

I was going to an Astros/Dodgers game last year and was trying to decide what I was gonig to wear. I didn’t have any dodger gear that fit me (LOL FAT) at the time, and since it was going to be a hot hot hot Sunday day game, I wanted to wear something that I wouldn’t overheat in.

The guy I was dating suggested a dress. The dress just so happened to be red. Neither of us thought anything of it until I got eye shanked by pretty much everyone in our section.

I remember when I was in little league

my team was the Astros. So one time we went to a game with the Astros, and my bro and I are wearing our Astros jackets, but we were cheering the Dodgers. I think we confused a great many people.

I went to a Marlins/Dodgers game when I was 7 in my Marlins uni from little league

I would never do that now, but back then I was excited to wear it, even if i was a Dodger fan.

I accidentally wore a red US Soccer hoody that was not obvious US Soccer to the unknowing fan when the angels came to DS. I felt like an idiot wearing red like the angel dorks.

by delias man on Jul 6, 2010 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

I wish the US would use more red in their international unis

Alas I’m pretty sure that red is like the 50th alternate uni.

There was a red one in the press release from Nike, but never saw it in the store there.

Do it man

Who cares what other people think. I’m not buying Dodger stuff to not wear it to any baseball game I go to.

I NEARLY wore a Dodger jersey to the Angel game on Saturday

Very nearly :)

wtf mets

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that talks between the Mets and Mariners regarding Cliff Lee “haven’t progressed very far.”

How the hell do the Mets have anyone worthwhile to trade?
