A Recap Of Blogger Night At Dodger Stadium

Ronald Belisario breezed through three innings last night in just 26 pitches

Last night was blogger night at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers hosted various Dodger bloggers in a suite, where Dave, Mike, and I had a chance to catch up with fellow bloggers while watching the game. I was happy to meet Roberto Baly from Vin Scully is My Homeboy for the first time. But most importantly, I finally had the chance to meet with and talk to Xeifrank in person. That was a treat.

Ned Colletti spent the better part of an hour answering questions, although there wasn't any revelation of news. In discussing John Ely, the Juan Pierre trade was broken down (Kenny Williams of the White Sox gave Colletti a short list of pitchers, of which they chose Ely and Jon Link) and Colletti mentioned specifically the Dodgers missed Pierre's clubhouse influence. I asked Colletti to compare the clubhouse influence of Pierre and Garret Anderson, who occupies the same locker next to Matt Kemp that Pierre did last year. It was an entree into a discussion of Anderson, who through an informal poll of nearly everyone outside the Dodger front office is occupying a roster spot he doesn't deserve. The way Colletti spoke of Anderson, combined with using the Xavier Paul discussion to talk about how Colletti would like minor leaguers to be "finished products" when they arrived in the majors, confirms my belief that Anderson isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Colletti mentioned interest in acquiring a pitcher or two, saying the club is considering both starters and relievers. I brought up George Sherrill and the volatility of relievers, asking Colletti how he factors in the risk of acquiring a reliever, given that their performance can fluctuate from year to year. He said the fluctuation in performance was indeed a risk, one that makes him hesitant to give large, multi-year contracts to relievers, and that in acquiring a reliever one hopes to be getting one on the upside rather than the downside of that volatility.

Colletti worked in public relations for several years, and took part in a few postseasons in the 1980s. He was in the Red Sox clubhouse with Bob Costas in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series and when Bob Stanley threw the wild pitch that tied the game Colletti turned to Costas and said, "Bob, we have to get out of here." Colletti ended up behind the plexiglass behind home plate (where the grounds crew entered) to see Mookie Wilson's "little roller up along first." Colletti was also in the Oakland dugout in the ninth inning of Game 1 of the 1988 World Series, as he was in charge of securing a player or two for the postgame interview. He worked with the Cubs in 1989 when Rick Sutcliffe was a late replacement in the All-Star Game, the last one in Anaheim. As mentioned by Vin Scully on the television broadcast, Colletti was instrumental in getting Sutcliffe's uniform from Chicago to Anaheim, as Colletti's wife flew out to deliver it. Some other Colletti highlights:

  • He is a big fan of Hong-Chih Kuo, as is just about everyone in the organization, for all the injuries he has battled through to become the dominant reliever he is today
  • James McDonald is making progress as a starter, although if needed later this season he could be called up as a reliever. Colletti was careful to mention "you can make a starter a reliever, but you can't make a reliever a starter."
  • Josh Lindblom has lost velocity, down from 95-96 mph to about 88-89. He has checked out fine medically, but Colletti said he would like to see him get back to the 92-93 range
  • Kenley Jansen is definitely an option to see major league time this season, although Colletti would like to see him walk fewer batters first
  • There is no update on Scott Elbert, who is on leave from Triple A Albuquerque

I felt bad for Sweet Lou Johnson, who stopped by our suite to say hello, but was quickly overshadowed, figuratively and literally, by the Miller High Life Guy, who threw out a fist pitch and came by afterward, much to the delight of many in the suite, myself included. Ron Cey stopped by for a while, and was very personable, and took control of the remote control, changing four of the five seven televisions in the suite to other games besides the Dodger game.

Kim Ng stopped by as well, although I regret not asking her a few questions when I had the chance. [Dennis Mannion also visited the suite, though TBLA did not speak with him outside of a greeting. - Ed.]  We saw several members of the Dodgers public relations staff, led by Josh Rawitch, who put the event together and stayed to watch the game with us in the suite.

Sax and Delino from Sons of Steve Garvey were there, and they have a recap up, too.  As do Chris & Alex from Dodgerfan.net, and Robert Timm of Dodger Dugout.

Rare Relief Feat

Last night, Jeff Weaver and Ronald Belisario combined to retire 19 of the 21 batters they faced. Weaver allowed just a walk in his 3 1/3 innings, and Belisario gave up only one hit in his three innings, throwing an amazingly economical 26 pitches. It was just the third nine-inning game since moving to Los Angeles that the Dodgers had two relievers pitch three or more innings allowing one hit or less.

June 10, 1960: Sandy Koufax allowed four runs while recording just four outs, and exited early. Ed Palmquist came in to pitch the next 3 2/3 innings, allowing just a hit and a walk, and Danny McDevitt followed by retiring all nine batters he faced. The Dodgers mounted a comeback, just like last night, but fell short, losing 4-3 to the Reds. The 24-year old Koufax fell to 1-8 on the season, and at that point in his career he was 29-35 with a 4.22 ERA in 149 career games. If blogs existed back then, I can only imagine the type of comments that cumulative performance would elicit.

April 17, 1996: The Dodgers staked Chan Ho Park to an early 4-0 lead over the Giants, but Park began the third inning by walking the first four batters. Antonio Osuna and Joey Eischen each followed with three scoreless innings, and the Dodgers pulled away to win 11-2. The lead story, however, in the Los Angeles Times was that Roger Cedeno stole second base in the ninth inning (it was ruled defensive indifference), up nine runs, which seemed to anger both clubhouses.

Tonight vs. Marlins

Vicente Padilla and Chris Volstad face off tonight in game two of the Dodgers series against the Marlins. Each one lost a game in Florida in the second series of the season, Volstad allowing three runs (two earned) in 6 1/3 innings on April 9, and Padilla allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings the next night.

Rafael Furcal has a nine-game hitting streak, during which he has 20 hits in 38 at-bats, hitting .526/.558/.895. Furcal won the NL player of the week for last week by hitting .538 with nine runs scored in six games.

James Loney's 57 RBI are the most by a Dodger before the All-Star break since Russell Martin (yes, Russell Martin) had 60 RBI in 85 games in 2007.

Yeah Loney!

I’m glad he’s been producing. And Furcal has just been ridiculous.

Some how I thought TBLA night was last night, but apparently it wasn’t. Reading comprehension! I has it.

I’m still kicking myself for not bringing my camera. I didn’t get a shot of me with Windell Middlebrooks (aka Miller High Life guy). Chris and Alex from Dodgerfan.net took photos of both me and Dave with Ron Cey; I will add them to the post once I get those.

Ha!

There was no beer inside the suite although several bloggers bought beers themselves and brought them in.

We ran out of Diet Coke early, possibly even before the game, and no more was restocked.

Wonder where the breakeven point of

suckiness versus clubhouse presence meet.

With Juan Pierre in the clubhouse Matt Kemp would only have taken six weeks to remember to take the ball to right field instead of eight.

The Penguin, I missed the Penguin. Dang

The good news is that it is the day after and no bad news yet.

I jokingly asked Ron Cey if he ever says anything to Vance Lovelace if he passes him in the hallways, and he kind of dismissed it, saying “I’m not involved with baseball operations.” Awkward.

He mentioned the replacement was five weeks ago (!) and he just stopped using the cane. I find five weeks to be pretty damn remarkable. He felt very good about how the surgery and recovery are going.

A newer placer you might not know of, more salubrious, also with truly great fries: Hollister Brewing Co, in the big mall (I forget the name, maybe Calle Real, known locally as “the Costco mall”) further on up Goleta off Hollister st the Glen Annie/Storke exit. It’s a true microbrewery; they brew their own great beers with about a dozen available every day, sports bar, excellent food – almost like a gastropub if you know the expression – and what they call “duck fries” – great.

But I don’t quite get how that guy overshadows Lou Johnson at a Dodger gathering. I’m not trying to be holier-than-thou – I understand TV cult favorites as much as anyone. But it just seems like it would be – hey, there’s that guy from that commercial – but I’m sticking with Sweet Lou.

Mariners "really like" Brett Lawrie of the Brewers

though according to Baseball America, he “still strikes out to often and is a work in progress at second base in AA”. Don’t the Dodger’s have a lot of prospects who are fairly good hitters but strike out a lot and works in progress defensively?

sure does

also, here’s Bleacher Report’s top 5 Dodgers most likely to be traded

5.Ramon Troncoso
4.Manny Ramirez
3.Dee Gordon
2.George Sherrill
1.Ronnie Belliard

I don’t know how well the guy knows the Dodgers because he says Gordon might not be a huge loss as the team could get a good shortstop with the money after Manny leaves. Doesn’t know we’ll still be paying Manny next year.

by Tommy Blackjack on Jul 6, 2010 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I think if it helps the team this year and in the future you make the trade. I think you could make the argument that trading him for Upton could accomplish these.

Upton has been less valuable than Manny on the year (per WAR.)

by Michael White on Jul 6, 2010 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I would trade Manny to improve the team this year

not because we out of the race. If we are out of the race then it is a no brainer, but I could see scenarios where moving Manny would be part of a package to improve the team. That may seem counter intuitive considering his OPS but when you take the complete package of Manny – Hitting, fielding, running, injuries – you have a good hitting outfielder, terrible fielder, terrible runner, brittle player who can be replaced.

by meercatjohn on Jul 6, 2010 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Im with that

I just don’t see anyone trading a player that would help us this year and take Manny off our hands. I am not in love with Manny….I just kinda like him:). by vadodger on Jul 6, 2010 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Obviously, straight up, it doesn’t make much sense, but Upton and the Rays seem to be on the outs and I would think the Rays would have a pretty good shot at signing Manny in the offseason. Manny for Upton could be the center of the deal involving other parts. It is all hypothetical because we are not going to trade Manny in-season.

Last season

6.6 UZR in CF.

So, yes.

That being said, even with Manny missing time, and being a LF, and not being a particular good defender, Manny has the better WAR on the year.

Manny: 1.5
Upton: 1.2

Last season, Upton’s bat was so bad that the only value he had was on defense.

He has a past of being much better

And his defense is freaking sick. Stick him in CF, Ethier in LF, and Kemp in RF and our outfield defense goes from worst in the league to possibly average.

before last week and Kemps hot week

his wOBA was higher then Matt Kemp based on his excellent stolen base numbers.

I have this weird vibe that Upton needs to play in front of crowds and that the years of playing in front of apathetic fans has made him apathetic. Okay that is ridic but for some reason I still have faith that Bossman can take those Henry Aaron wrists and bat speed and do something with them.

by meercatjohn on Jul 6, 2010 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I just don’t see dropping the one true slugger at a position that we can stash him in LF so that the Dodgers can start 2 center fielders.

by Michael White on Jul 6, 2010 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I think calling Manny our one true slugger

is not accurate anymore. For one he’s hit all of eight home runs in 216 PA’s. For two Andre and Kemp have more home run power at this point in their careers.

Anyway it is a moot point, the Rays would never trade Upton for 1/2 year of Manny.

You can only offer a 30% salary decrease in arbitration

So based on $25MM, the Dodgers could offer no less than 17.5MM with Manny asking for some arbitrary number higher than that.

I’m not sure he thinks he could get a 2 year deal worth more than 25mil (17.5 + a good 1year salary for him), so I’d think he would accept. That would leave us with an 18million dollar bench player.

His range has been awful. UZR may not be the best stat but it’s certainly not something to be discounted from a CF. Manny’s got the best UZR of our starting outfielders, and there’s gotta be something behind that.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

by Ivdown on Jul 6, 2010 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

something behind that.

Remember UZR is comparative, so Manny is compared to the multitude of crappy LFs in the league, e.g., Braun. It’s hard to be too far below average when there are so many anvils sending the average plummeting.

You are exactly right

Why would I say that Manny is, overall, a better fielder than Kemp or Ethier? Manny has put up better numbers in 2010 than either Kemp or Ethier at their respective positions.

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

by Ivdown on Jul 6, 2010 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s stupid of you to say. I at least have evidence to back up my assertions. Check out UZR. There is a reason why Manny has a better UZR than both Kemp and Ethier.

And to Jon W., obviously Kemp is a better CF than Manny would be. But right now Manny is fielding LF better than Kemp is fielding CF and Ethier is fielding RF. That being said, Manny in CF would be hilarity, and in RF he would be worse than Ethier IMO.

I know UZR shouldn’t be heavily relied upon until the end of the season, but it’s not as though Kemp’s UZR will magically get 10 points better once September rolls around.

As much as I love Kemp, his defense has been awful this year, and Ethier’s hasn’t been much better. Manny’s is below average in LF, but as a LF, he’s been better than Kemp in CF and Ethier in RF.

3 really, and in the mean time something significant that might happen such as a decline or a real improvement in defense ability.

by Tripon on Jul 6, 2010 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

wOBA is a hitting stat, which Ethier and Manny are a wash, and Kemp is a bit below.

Sure, we can call UZR a small sample size issue, but it seems people only want to exclude UZR as an insignificant sample size when it benefits their overall argument.

The fact is that Kemp and Ethier are below average CF and RF respectively. Ramirez is bad defensively too, but compared to others who play his position (where crap fielders like Burrell get stashed) Ramirez rates better than the other 2 who play more premium positions.

SSS or not

"You're the only woman to ever love me." "I never loved you." "I meant physically!"

by Ivdown on Jul 6, 2010 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll do it as a joke

For 2010:

Manny: -4.1
Ethier: -12.9
Kemp: -16.0 (the worst CF in the majors)

Of course this doesn’t take into account position. Manny is compared to other LFs, Ethier with other RFs, and Kemp to other CFs. Also, you have to believe that Kemp is a true -11 in range alone, and that he’s error prone(-1.3), and that his arm has turned into shit. (-3.7)

Kemp’s been below average in CF this season, but I doubt he’s the single worst CF playing today.

Basically, our outfield defense sucks.

by Tripon on Jul 6, 2010 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't believe how awful it's been

Which makes it crazy that Manny has the best UZR on the team. But as I have said (just now actually, lol), I will take Kemp’s defense going forward far above Ethier and Manny.

On June 30th

So with bonuses he made the following:
2009 – $10M (subtract approx 1/3 during suspension)
2010 – $10M ($5M for 2010 salary, $5M deferred from 2009 payable on 6/30)
2011 – $8.33 ($3.33M deferred for 2010 and $5M deferred from 2009 payable on 6/30)
2012 – $8.33 ($3.33M deferred for 2010 and $5M deferred from 2009 payable on 6/30)

I understand people being down on Manny’s D, or his creaky hamstring (which has been a problem for several years anyway), but when he’s in there, he mashes, pure and simple. I don’t see him fetching something worthwhile enough in a trade anyway, he helps the Dodgers’ O and won’t bring back the kind of prospect we’d drool over, imho. He’s a Dodger for 3 more months, might as well ride it out and enjoy it as best as we and he can and then part ways before 2011.

He mashes pure and simple

He hit his high point on April 22nd 1.159 OPS. Got hurt, came back on May 8th(only missed the 15 days) and watched his OPS plummet to ..808 on June 3rd. Got his timing back and then moved his OPS back up to .939 on June 29th. When he comes back will he need another three weeks to get his timing back again? Since being a Dodger he seems to go into slumps right after he comes back from the DL. Since he will probably hit that DL once or twice again, given that he can’t even slide into 2nd with hurting himself, how many productive weeks of hitting are we to expect from him going forward?

by meercatjohn on Jul 6, 2010 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions

The worries about how much productive time we'll get out of him are legit. But

I stand by my statement that his offense is hard to replace. If there were a Manny for Cliff Lee trade yes I’d do it, but I don’t see that happening. At all.

Broxton seems to depend entirely on speed – and his accuracy must be excellent for the speed too – but it’s nearly all fastball, no?. I mean I know he introduces other pitches for variety and to keep them guessing, but it’s really his fastball that does the damage. In a few years, that’s bound to wear off. Is it total guesswork at this point to try to speculate how good he’ll be at developing other pitches and whether he’ll be any good at them? Chances, so far, must be that he won’t be exceptional at other pitches, so when his exceptional speed wears off, he could end up not all that special. Is there any point even looking at comparative pitchers so see how they developed? Surely it must really depend on the guy. Just have to wait and see, and enjoy the good years.

OF defense is affected more by SSS since they generally have less chances to actually catch a ball for an out. An error will affect their rankings more severely than a similar error from say, the SS.

Also, more of the hits they give up can be of the XBH variety which will hurt them if they turn a single into a double.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 6, 2010 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

they've been saying that since I pitched in high school

and that was 2000-2004. All idiot parents and kids see is that player A throws 85, gets hurt, has tommy john, rehabs, comes back throwing low 90s. They fail to ignore the REHAB part of that equation where out-of-shape Stephen becomes in-shape BB-throwing Strasburger.

Just another means for people who think there is a fast track around hard work.

by G.Scott on Jul 6, 2010 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions

they just fail to realize how beneficial getting in shape and spending 12 straight months working out and playing long toss can be. Funny how exercise, strength training and arm conditioning can make you throw harder! Can you imagine parents having their track-running kids get knee replacement surgery at 16 to be able to run faster? idiots.

by G.Scott on Jul 6, 2010 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

That doesn’t actually work. If a pitcher needs Tommy John, its because he abused his arm to the point where a replacement is needed.

The added velocity fastball is because its a fresh ligament, not because there is suddenly ‘newfound’ velocity.

There's no room for Jmac in the rotation right now

The only way we would see him is if they trade Ely (or an injury), but I’d imagine a trade involving Ely would be for a better pitcher anyway. Unless Jmac is going in the bullpen, which I wouldn’t mind.

Is he struggling enough to warrant being sent down and bring Jmac up?

Ely has struggled a bit in the last month or so, but overall he’s still above average so far, which I would imagine makes them want to keep him up until he gets shelled more than a couple times.

I hope Ely gets traded for something valuable while Ely’s value is so high.

For McDonald? I don’t see the Dodgers doing that either. Despite my confidence in McDonald, he hasn’t shown it as a SP for the Dodgers while Ely has. For that reason Ely will continue to get starts ahead of JMac (which is perfectly understandable.) I think JMac would need an injury to one of the current starting 5 to get a spot start or 2 with the Dodgers or Ely has to completely melt down.

Here's where that question gets you

1) an answer about how Santana has progressed from the time they traded him
2) how Casey Blake has contributed to two teams that went to the NLCS

It’s a process in which we know the outcome, so there is no point to ask it.

I suppose one time Ned might consider that question, and then say “you know what, I was wrong. I resign.” But I would give that a one in a million chance.

Ned went on a lot about needing high character guys, and I asked how he was comfortable bringing in Padilla. He said that he knew his agent and the agent arranged a lunch with all of them and Colletti discussed it in person with Padilla. Basically he told him that simply claming him is a low risk move for the Dodgers, and if Padilla turns out to be the dick that everyone in Texas thought he was, that he would be out of here.

Other things

Someone asked about Matt Kemp, and I can’t remember Colletti’s full response, other than something like “I answered a question [from Peter Tilden of KABC, about Matt Kemp’s baserunning and defense]. What am I supposed to do, lie about it?” From the rest of the response, it seemed to me that that portion of the tiff was behind them (that was my impression).

Someone asked about George Sherrill, whether he could be sent down to the minors to work on stuff, and Ned mentioned that he has five years service time and would need to accept such an assignment. Someone asked if something like that was broached, and Ned didn’t answer but just smiled. Take of that what you will. :)

Ned also said he was considering sending Troncoso down three weeks ago.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 6, 2010 4:25 PM PDT reply actions

I think Ned was even a little stronger on Tron – something like he was ready to do it three weeks ago.

Thanks

I couldn’t remember how he phrased it

by Eric Stephen on Jul 6, 2010 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Also

That reminds me…Ned mentioned that he talks with Joe Torre a ton and that he would never acquire a player the manager didn’t want to play. I think the Troncoso non-move is part of that relationship; Torre probably wanted to give him a few more chances, and Ned gave him the rope to do so by keeping him up.

by Eric Stephen on Jul 6, 2010 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

That would seem to explain GA still on the team

you know by now Ned has to know it’s his butt on the line for a poor team since a) Joe Torre is iconic to the casual fan/national media and b) Torre’s contract is up at the end of the year.

by G.Scott on Jul 6, 2010 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I think both Ned and Joe like GA

by Eric Stephen on Jul 6, 2010 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think any of us would really mind him either if he wasn’t being used in such a large role. Ned probably feels confident enough with that nice shiny extension of his.

All Star Game Starting Pitchers

Everyone starting today will also start Sunday, and therefore be ruled ineligible to pitch. These include:

AL:
Jake Arrieta
Armando Galarraga
Carl Pavano
Jesse Litsch
Felix Doubront
Jeff Niemann
Justin masterson
C.J. Wilson
Jered Weaver
Jake Peavy
CC Sabathia
Trevor Cahill
Zach Greinke
Ryan Rowland-Smith

NL:
Vicente Padilla
Chris Volstad
Carlos Silva
Barry Enright
Jeff Francis
Blake Hawksworth
Madison Baumgarner
Randy Wolf
Brad Lincoln
Wandy Rodriguez
Matt Maloney
Johan Santana
Clayton Richard
Livan Hernandez
Jair Jurrjens
Cole Hamels

Not a whole lot of All-Stars in there, but there are some who will need to be replaced. Namely, all those complaining that Jered Weaver didn’t get in, while he should still get to participate and be recognized in front of the home crowd, he would not have been playing anyway.

Since they retired, Salmon and Karros have a more dubious link: They are at the top of baseball’s list of players who hit the most home runs in their careers without playing in an All-Star game. Salmon ranks first with 299 homers; Karros is second with 284.

by MartinGreen on Jul 6, 2010 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

From Ed Price at Fanhouse (good luck with this one)

Acquiring Roy Oswalt would apparently cost a great deal. Word is that the Astros would not only make the acquiring team pay all of Oswalt’s salary — the rest of his $15 million this year, $16 million next year and a $2 million buyout on the 2012 team option — but also wants three major-league-ready young players in return.

It’s possible that demand comes from owner Drayton McLane and not GM Ed Wade. Pretty steep price, and that doesn’t even factor in Oswalt’s full no-trade clause.
