July 7th, Marlins vs Dodgers - Simulation

I used my simulator to simulate 100000 baseball games between the Marlins and the Dodgers using what to the best of my knowledge will be close to today's starting lineups.  The simulator outputs a win probability for each team, along with the average total runs scored, a distribution matrix of all the final scores and how often they occurred, and an averaged box score tally of all games combined.  The simulator takes into account such things as defense, park factors, home field advantage, pitchers tiring and a proprietary set of hitter and pitcher projections that are calibrated on a daily basis.  There are many references to Vegas win probabilities.  This is just a measuring stick I use to determine how well my simulator does.  This by no means is meant as a tool to use to gamble on baseball games, it is more of an exercise in analyzing baseball games.  You may find it strange that there are so many one run games listed as the most likely score, and that the home team is always favored to win in the top couple of scores.  This is due to basic math and the way that baseball rules play out of having the home team bat last.  Here is a great article explaining this phenomenon.  Here are the latest Vegas MLB odds.

Today's Results... (Last simulation ran Tuesday at 11:15 PM)

Visitors Home Pitching Matchup Favorite Vegas Win Prob Simulator Win Prob
 FLA LAN J.Johnson vs H.Kuroda FLA 54.13% 49.89%

Notes:   A tough and excruciating 9th inning for MammothDodger as he nearly missed a 49 point jackpot but instead settled for a five point pat on the back.  Vegas loves them some Josh Johnson, and why not.  He's very good, but has also been a bit on the lucky side.  Alongside his 1.82 ERA, he also sports a FIP of 2.39 and an xFIP of 3.10.  Kuroda on the otherhand has been a little unlucky on his BABIP allowed (.337) but that has been offset by a LOB% of only 68.9%.  This will be a tough game for the Dodgers, but Vegas is favoring the Marlins a little too much.  Get your game score guess and over/under guesses in.

Over/Under Questions:

1. Marlins hits minus Dodgers hits: 0.5
2. J.Johnson total pitches minus H.Kuroda total pitches: 8.5
3. J.Johnson strike outs minus Dodgers total runs scored: 3.5
4. A.Ethier + M.Kemp + J.Loney RBIs: 1.5
5. Dodgers most runs scored in an inning: 1.5

Final: #20 FLA 4-0, OOOUU

1. Marlins hits minus Dodgers hits: 0.5 (7-6=1 = Over)
2. J.Johnson total pitches minus H.Kuroda total pitches: 8.5 (117-103=14 = Over)
3. J.Johnson strike outs minus Dodgers total runs scored: 3.5 (8-0 = Over)
4. A.Ethier + M.Kemp + J.Loney RBIs: 1.5 (0+0+0=0 = Under)
5. Dodgers most runs scored in an inning: 1.5 (0 = Under)

Two winners of the over/under 10 bonus points. They were Phil who complained that this took too much brainwork (nice job) and matthewmafa. They were both in on the 5-3-1 points as they and Humma Kavula were the only three people to pick the Marlins to win.

5 points – Phil Gurnee (20-12=8)
3 points – matthewmafa (30-20=10)
1 point – Humma Kavula (33-20=13)

Total for the day
Phil Gurnee: 10+5 = 15 points
matthewmafa: 10+3 = 13 points
Humma Kavula: 1 point
