Opener: Cubs vs. Dodgers
The Dodger begin a four-game weekend series tonight with a Chicago Cubs team that is 38-47 and 10 1/2 games out of first in the NL Central, but is coming off of a road sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Clayton Kershaw (8-4, 3.02 ERA, 3.24 FIP, 4.01 xFIP) starts for the Dodgers for the last time before the All-Star break, while righty Randy Wells (4-6, 4.67, 3.37, 3.77) takes the hill for the Cubs. In May in Chicago, Kershaw was on the wrong end of a shutout pitched by the Cubs. Only one Cub, Jeff Baker, has more than three PAs versus Kershaw in his career, and Baker, in eleven PAs, is hitting .400 / .455 / .800 against him, with one HR; expect Baker to be starting in the infield tonight.
Several likely starters have faced Wells six or seven times previously, no one more than that, with Garret Anderson holding the only dinger against him, hit for Atlanta last year at home.
Pitching matchups for the rest of the series:
- Friday: Ted Lilly (3-7, 3.76, 4.62, 4.64) vs. Chad Billingsley (6-4, 4.06, 3.50, 3.88)
- Saturday: Tom Gorzelanny (3-5, 3.31, 3.46, 3.98) vs. John Ely (4-6, 4.07, 3.53, 3.87)
- Sunday: Carlos Silva (9-2, 2.96, 3.59, 3.84) vs. Vicente Padilla (3-2, 4.72, 4.73, 3.75)
TBLA's Cubs team preview from late May.
Notes
- Evenly matched? The all-time series record between the Dodgers and Cubs stands at 1018 - 1017 in the Dodgers favor.
- Home cooking? Since Andre Ethier got to play in his hometown of Phoenix on Friday, he is hitting .417 / .462 / .750 / 1.212, with two double and two homers. Tonight is Andre Ethier superhero action figure night at the Stadium.
- Ethier said he was not invited for the Home Run Derby, but that he wouldn't have accepted an invitation either.
- "Manny will play for Class-A Inland Empire on Saturday." - Dylan Hernandez on twitter.

After reading the preview,
I would’ve expected Jeff Baker to crack the lineup.
Yes David, I read the articles, not just the comments! :)
Baker started in Chi against Kershaw
at 3B, but that was when Ramirez was sucking horribly.

Between that ballpark and that bullpen
and some of those starters, who doesn’t?
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
Fair enough
but it has to be a boost to his confidence. As bad as he has been, I think he’d be happy doing that in AA.
From the previous thread, I couldn't resist

I'm sure it's been posted but I can't get into the large

Roy Oswalt was dealing today!
Anyone hearing anything on Corey Hart to the Gnats for Sanchez?
From Dodger Thoughts
Scott Elbert is back in Arizona, “playing catch,” according to Dodger coach Ken Howell. No date set for his return to action.

Brent Leach made it 1 out into the 5th with a shutout before Huntsville just scored 2 off him
Oh well. Pretty decent effort though.

I think it is safe to say
Leach will not pitch for the Dodgers again

Yes, they demoted him to AA
but to stretch him out and try and convert him (back?) to a starter. That’s not exactly giving up.
Or are you predicting a trade.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
The guy is 27
Converting him back as a starter is in its early stage but I don’t think it will be successful. Just my personal opinion. Hes an extremely poor poor poor poor mans Kershaw

Why are you so sure?
Though I like the idea of them stretching him back into a starter, as a lefty, could be useful again with them or as an extra trade chip.

And he gets out of it okay enough
5 ip, 2 ER for Leach. Enters 6th up 3-2.

They just showed Scioscia blocking the plate against Eric Davis
in June 1990. Such a great job of blocking, dropped the shin guard and Davis slid right into it. then LOu P exploded on the HP Blue.
Love it
yea
thanks for the reminder though I will set the tivo right now.

Hard to do

They really need to have Sarah Morris write for Dodgers.com
Defensively, Ethier has always been one of the best right fielders in the National League, and this season is no exception. Last year, many scouts believed Ethier, as well as teammate Matt Kemp, deserved a Gold Glove. He doesn’t make the spectacular plays that make everyone go “awesome!” However, he provides a steady presence in right field. I don’t remember Ethier misplaying a ball that allowed a runner to take an extra base or having a throw sail on him. Hopefully, Ethier is able to win that elusive Gold Glove this year.
Really? Which scouts, is this an opinion of the scout? You don’t remember when Ethier played a single into a triple? Really?
You may
have that backwards. I think ESPN is doing the slobbering.

Vin Scully just saw us gathered around the TV and said “What is this, the World Series?” Told it was for Lebron, he laughed and said, “Who?”

Pointless article

I warned you
didn’t I?
If Eric had written an article on that topic, it would have had easier to compare stat lines that show JP’s performance as a starting LF all last season, and Reed, GA, and XPaul’s this year.
The commenter formerly known as El Lay Dave.
So we should have signed Eric Hinske, even though we wouldn’t have a center fielder, but it doesn’t matter because Eric Hinske wouldn’t have signed with us anyway.
well Hinske instead of GA still allows for Reed Johnson to be the backup CF.

The Reds just tied the game up
by Phillips striking out with runners on 1st and 2nd. Ball got away from Schneider and Stubbs scored from 2nd. 2 outs and it is 2-2 in the T8.

So
Knicks have Amare and nothing else, and the Nets have nothing? Oh wait the Nets signed an Outlaw.

Nets are hoping
Jayson Williams can get his legal troubles figured out.
They want him at 3 yrs and 38 million :)
With Steve Blake as the starting PG
that will get old fast.

I don't think he's had a hit since he launched that 2nd deck home run the other day

Can't wait to see how they build this team
Pat Riley always had the look of a snake oil salesman. Nice job.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Yeah
had a friend who said that when Shaq picked the Lakers, Maybe not the first year but as they build the team, I’d say they have a good shot at a title.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
i just don't think they have enough
right now to compete. The PG’s, SG’s, and PF’s are a wash with the Lakers. LBJ is better than Artest. The Lakers have a great bench and a legit Center. If the Lakers are healthy, they should win. But I get it that LBJ, DWade, and Bosh are awesome.
When do they trade Beasley?
Going to suck that when Kershaw pitches his no-hitter tonight
he will be overshadowed by the LBJ news.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
