Deadline Accounting: A Look At Salary Added By The Dodgers This Week
Here's a look at the salaries that the Dodgers have added this week with their various trades. For further details, you can check out our payroll worksheet, which is always available on our right sidebar. It is important to note that major league salaries are pro-rated over the 183 days of the season, defined by the collective bargaining agreement as the Sunday before Opening Day (April 4 this season) through the last scheduled day of the year (October 3 this season).
Wednesday: Dodgers acquired Scott Podsednik from Kansas City for Lucas May and Elisaul Pimentel
The Dodgers also designated Jack Taschner for assignment on Thursday to make room for Podsednik. Technically, even though he is off the 40-man roster, Taschner will continue to get paid at the major league rate (which I have estimated as the minimum salary of $400,000) until his fate is determined. The Dodgers have 10 days to either trade or release Taschner, or he can accept an assignment to the minors. So, I will assume his final day on the payroll to be August 7.
| Player | 2010 Salary | Days Remaining | Dodgers Portion |
| Podsednik | $1.75 million | 67 | $640,710 |
| Taschner | $400,000 | 57 | ($124,590) |
| Total Salary Added | $516,120 | ||
Saturday: Dodgers acquired Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot, and $2.5 million from the Cubs for Blake DeWitt, Brett Wallach, and Kyle Smit
I am assuming for purposes of this exercise that Travis Schlichting will be optioned to Triple A to make room for Ted Lilly on the 25-man roster. Theriot simply takes DeWitt's spot, so that part is easy.
| Player | 2010 Salary | Days Remaining | Dodgers Portion |
| Lilly | $12 million | 64 | $4,196,721 |
| Theriot | $2.6 million | 64 | $909,290 |
| DeWitt | $410,000 | 64 | ($143,388) |
| Schlichting | $400,000 | 64 | ($139,891) |
| Cash from Cubs | ($2,500,000) | ||
| Total Salary Added | $2,322,722 | ||
Saturday: Dodgers acquired Octavio Dotel and $500,000 from the Pirates for James McDonald and Andrew Lambo
I don't have the exact figure of McDonald's 2010 salary, but he made $400,750 last year and I have estimated his major league salary to be $405,000. Dotel simply takes his spot on the active roster.
| Player | 2010 Salary | Days Remaining | Dodgers Portion |
| Dotel | $3.25 million | 64 | $1,136,612 |
| McDonald | $405,000 | 64 | ($141,639) |
| Cash from Pirates | ($500,000) | ||
| Total Salary Added | $494,973 | ||
All in all, the Dodgers added a little more than $3.3 million in 2010 salary with their moves this week:
| Trade | 2010 Salary Added |
| Podsednik | $516,120 |
| Lilly, Theriot |
$2,322,722 |
| Dotel | $494,973 |
| Total Salary Added | $3,333,815 |

So all these payroll additions for this year and next means that McCourt is gonna shock us all with a 120 million dollar budget in 2011, right?
He'd shock me with a $100 Million payroll to start the season.

Still want to talk about last month
I knew Carroll had sucked but I had no idea he had sucked that much, no wonder they quickly made Riot the starting 2nd baseman. Dang Blake, at least be average, don’t be Castroish. DeWitt got it all done with on base skills. Not sure how a guy his size can manage to hit one home run for a season.
Unless Martin does something I don’t see any way Martin is the Dodger catcher in 2011.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I’m pretty sure Carroll has a history of wilting after 200 or so PA. It’s why you don’t use him whenever you can like Torre did.

That and he’s not all that good of a player.

I agree. I really like him, and think he is a nice player to have on the bench, but the moment he starts playing everyday or nearly everyday, you start to have problems.

Hilariously enough
one of my good friends at my old job (ha, I can say that now) is a huge Cubs fan. He was telling me on facebook that he believes that the Dodgers got the better end of the deal because Lilly is good and Theriot and DeWitt are about even. While I agree that this move is to try and make us better NOW and not next year (or even the year after that), I was still hilariously heartbroken about the trade.
To be fair, I was also tired, slightly hungover, and in a kind of bad mood to begin with. But I was still sad.
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
I completely agree that the Dodgers are better in 2010 because of the Cubs deal, and I’m even willing to concede that DeWitt and Theriot are a wash.
I just think, going forward, between DeWitt and Theriot, one is younger and cheaper, and more likely to improve, and since the Dodgers are on a budget they need as many average or above players making league minimum as possible.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 1, 2010 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions
That was my contention as well
Now the issues about “our core” and whether or not the Dodgers should pay them, trade them, whatever is going to take on a more strident tone.
They say to never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious.
We traded five years of DeWitt for two years of Theriot so we could have Ted Lilly for two months.
I still can’t believe this actually happened.
by regfairfield on Aug 1, 2010 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions
I just wonder who asked for whom
and if Dewitt’s inclusion lessened the asking price for the two months of Lilly.
There was an article posted in another thread that Hendry pushed for DeWitt on the advice of Greg Maddux.
Who liked DeWit during their short time together in 2008.
I’m sure it did. Cubs probably wanted someone that could play in the majors or close to it since they can’t really rebuild. They asked for DeWitt, we said, okay if you give us Theriot.

Depends on what our finances really are. Three or four million for Theriot versus DeJesus or something might be the difference between Jon Garland and a real pitcher.
by regfairfield on Aug 1, 2010 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions
Garland with the Padre defense in Petco is very different from Garland and the Dodger defense.
by regfairfield on Aug 1, 2010 10:32 AM PDT up reply actions
Even with Padres defense in Petco, Garland is a slightly above average pitcher.
His 3.56 ERA is only good enough for a 102 ERA+.
Petco is the biazarro Coors fields. So of course MLB puts the two teams and stadium in the same division.

Yep, DeWitt is average, cheap, and young enough that he’ll probably get better.
Theriot joins every single other player we have as arbitration eligible, sucks, and 31 year old second basemen don’t usually come back from sucking.

More reasons T.J. Simers is a dick
from his column today:
As for the former Royal, Scott Podsednik, he’s already isolated himself from everyone in the clubhouse, which eliminates his teammates from feeding off his energy — if he has any.
What the hell does that even mean? For the most part, players in the clubhouse are doing their own thing. Before the game, they are sitting at their lockers in their own world. Sure there is conversation and banter going on, but it’s not like a fucking Kumbaya fest. Of course, Simers doesn’t explain his inane statement, so we don’t know what the hell he is talking about?
I think he's attacking the idea of the 'energy guy'.
Which if that is one of the main reasons you trade for a guy is well, dumb.
It means
Podsednick has actually built plywood walls around his locker, blares loud music, and everytime anyone approaches he shouts, “If you play for the Dodgers, stay the fuck away from me. I’m tired and prefer Kansas City BBQ to this Chinese shit at the bottom of the hill.”

I am not sure what this means
If you are saying the team is paying dead money now and for the next few years, that is true. They really are only deferring one salary right now, and that is Manny’s.
But there is no evidence that are not paying those monies to players no longer on the roster in 2010 and beyond.
The Angels
will be paying GMJ his full salary in 2011. Boston is paying Julio Lugo right now as well as the D-Backs are paying Eric Byrnes to not pay for them.
play for them
The Dodgers will be paying primarily Manny, Jones and Pierre next year and then Manny and Jones for the next couple of years after that.
It was a joke
and apparently a bad one since no one got it. :(

accounting
if i squint, i can sort of see the virtue of selling dewitt at what could easily be his peak value. lilly fixes a short-term problem for this year and, because i’m an optimist, i can see theriot filling the carroll role after this season. putting wallach and smit in the deal is the kind of gamble you have to take to take a shot (however lame it may be) at winning in a given season.
but there is no accounting (ha! i make small, pun-style joke) for dotel.
i think it’s possible to vview the dotel trade as a metaphor for the hatred ned feels toward younger baseball players. santana for blake was malpractice of the “shoulda known better” variety; lambo and macdonald for dotel is an overt act.
i know, i know; macdonald and lambo have been flimsy over the past 24 months. there’s an excellent chance neither will amount to anything in the bigs.
but both are rarely talented baseball players who, for various reasons, are finding it difficult to translate talent into productivity – in their early 20s. professionally, that trait applies the 99.9 percent of all humans and probably a good chunk of the baseball hall of fame.
worse, even on ned’s trust-only-mediocre-veterans terms, the dotel deal sucks. he’s selling macdonald and lambo at the lowest possible point.
ned is a mediocre GM, at best. that’s reflected in the level of talent he brings to the team.
ned and the mccourts are abusing my love of the team.

No. Somebody will be willing to pay $15 million next year and not give up anybody in return.
Of course, the Brewers will just pull him back.
Sure, why not?
I think the Angels understand what a sunk cost is, and the Haren trade works just as well for 2011 and 2012. Whatever you can get for Fuentes, even if its only a half a million of salary relief is worth it.
You’re not getting comp picks for him either.
So its August now
so have people started getting their parking spots for the first tailgate already.
I don't even listen to
talk radio unless it is national radio now.
Local guys have been doing predictions and previews for a month already.
I get all giddy just thinking about it.
Only a month
I would have thought that began back in December.
Of course you have to sweat out fall camp, making sure no one gets hurt (someone always gets hurt).
But games start at the end of the month.
So tell me
How does a Saturday start in the SEC.
I’ll tell you for a UCLA home game, if its in the evening, I head out to the game maybe 3-4 hours before the game and hang out.
Though others will be there all day.
But I am guessing in the SEC, its starts on Friday.
A night game in LR for say....the LSU game this year.
There is a municipal GC that is right beside the stadium where everyone parks and tailgates for LR games. We get there on Friday afternoon. Set up tents, awnings, and tv’s.
Getup early on Saturday, fire up the grill around 9 am. Grill hamburgers and kabobs mostly at my spot. I’m not the greatest cook in the world. But where I fail in cooking, I make up for it in beer drinking. :)
It is a 2 day event for the LR games. Fayeteville games don’t have the same tailgating experience because of the cops and the fact you are on campus. It kinda sucks. Fayeteville is about 2.5 hours from my house so we just leave about 4 hours before kick off for games in Fayetnam.
When we are pretty good
it is great. There are 40,000 people tailgating for 18 hours on the golf course before a game.
Pretty sweet.
So let's all head out there to that game
On Thanksgiving weekend. Shoot, don’t even need to go to that game, just tailgate.
I will be there
You are invited. I have an extra ticket right now. Can’t promise I will have it in 2 months!
is our game on espn again
pray we do not get humiliated on a national scale once more =(

Broxton threw a perfect ninth, the Dodgers took the series from the Yankees. With this renewed confidence, the Dodgers played nearly perfect baseball and currently lead the NL West by 19 1/2 games. Other NL teams have started sending letters conceding the NL pennant. The Dodgers have accepted but will continue to play games as a courtesy to other team’s fans. Naturally, they will not be playing all of their elite players on a regular basis. Instead, expect to see fill in veterans Scott Podsednick and Ryan Theriot until the World Series.

In the 5th inning, they sent 10 men to the plate, scored 5, and left 2 men on base.

The Rays are 40-41 in stolen bases vs. NYY/BOS this year. I think they are my pick to win it all. (BTW, funny that so much of the offseason was devoted to wondering if the Dodgers could get past the Phils this year—both may miss the dance.)
Seriously
If I could just pick any team in baseball to become a fan of, it would have to be them. Their rotation is loaded, they have franchise-type offensive talent, and their minor league system churns out player after player. Will they offer Pena arbitration? It’s an easy yes on Crawford.

Looks like the Dodgers are going to need to win tonight to avoid 4th place.
Rockies are pounding the Cubs.
They may have 1 more run left in them

just gave me a live look-in at D-backs/Mets (14-1 AZ in 9th). I guess the Mets feel unsupported by their front office, who did nothing at the trade deadline ;)
Three strikes
you’re out!

Just finished The Dark Knight again
I’ve seen it about 10-15 times, and I can still safely say it’s the best movie I’ve ever seen. I can’t wait for the next one.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Did it open your eyes to new perspectives on life?
Did Christian Bale inspire you to do…something? Does it comfort you when your life philosophy is called into question?

Are you speaking of Inception or something, lol
No new views on life, it’s just a sick movie.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Actually I was just calling to question
the difference between something being the shinniest movie you’ve ever seen and the best movie you’ve ever seen. Y’know, that thing I do where I’m an intellectual snob. Carry on.

Yes, I can see that snob part emerging right now :P
The Dark Knight has one of the best movie plots in any movie I’ve ever seen, and quite possibly the best villain in any movie there is. It’s not like some Michael Bay movie, lol.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Also
Timothy Daulton seems like a terrible James Bond. I’m glad I’ve gotten to see Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig in my lifetime.

Sean Connery
is the best James Bond. Goldeneye is a fantastic film, but if you haven’t watched Goldfinger or From Russia With Love, you’re missing out

I'm watching License to Kill right now on Showtime or something
The acting just seems a lot worse, much less badass.

I hope he plays
out of his shoes the rest of his career, I really do

Forgot to do this yesterday
but here are the former “last trade with club ______” before this week’s deals:
KC: Dodgers got Elmer Dessens for Odalis Perez, Blake Johnson, Julio Pimentel (we only do Pimentel deals with Royals), and cash, 7/25/06
Cubs: Dodgers got Greg Maddux and cash for Cesar Izturis, 7/31/06
Pit: Dodgers got Eric Krebs and $1 for Delwyn Young 4/14/09
When did hipsters and rap go together?
Rap is for brosephs

farm system
I think the ill will I feel about these trades is the general crapping on the farm system of Ned and McCourt. Don’t offer arbitration to get draft picks, draft unsignable guys then trade a first rounder (Dewitt) a third (Wallach) a fourth (Lambo) a fifth (Smit) ,eighth (Lucas May)
eleventh(McDonald) and a blossoming non-drafted free agent (Pimental) for an average starter for 2 months and three mediocrities.
It reminds me of the Giants before they got good young pitching, a pile of fair to poor vets going nowhere.
Please go bankrupt McCourt and sell the team.
Adding Money what it really means
Whatever your views on the trades are today, the real proof, regardless how the Dodgers finish this year will be the offseason and who is offered arbitration. A case can be made that if the Dodgers do some things right and at least offer arbitration to Dotel and Lilly, and Pods, as well as Kuroda, they can at least give themselves a chance to go forward with their young core before everyone becomes to expensive to sign.
If the Dodgers also fall out of it by the end of August, I hope they get rid of Dotel and get something for him, not sure where they will get more if this situation plays out.
