I’m headin’ out to enemy lines in a bit. Hope by the time I land tonight, I’ll see a recap, reminding us all why not even Ned Colletti is short-sighted enough to trade Chad Billingsley (and others) for Roy Oswalt.

(I also hope I don’t get tased tomorrow…)

why the hell does Jalen Rose get to have a say on anything baseball related? It’s not like he said Matt Kemp wants to be traded to the Clippers.

Why would he say that?

He’s a free agent in two years. He can walk.

Or does he mean, if the Dodgers aren’t going to try to win over the next two years (11-12), he’d rather be traded? Doesn’t every young player feel that way?

It’s a dumb thing to say either way. But benching material? I dunno.

It is kind of a funny thought, though

1. Team isn’t competitive, partially because Player X isn’t performing up to snuff

I wasn’t necessarily speaking of Kemp in my post. There are others, of which remain nameless, until I am told I can speak of it freely. I don’t want to get into a tampering situation on certain things.

by BFDC on Aug 11, 2010 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it really could be gripes or worries about

ownership, yeah. More than anything. On the other hand, you have to wonder about players who start crabbing about this and that and would rather play here or there, as if all other teams have stable, wonderful owners and perfect management to play for. I think we’re being more worried about them than is necessary but if they’re secretly wanting out they may be kind of naive about how great it could be to play instead for Team X or Y. Does Ethier really think the Diamondbacks would be less messy than LA right now? I doubt it.

Look, my thoughts are these:

1. Kemp shouldn’t be benched.
2. Kemp’s being benched is a bad sign for how he is viewed by management.
3. Kemp’s play has not been cutting it.
4. So what do we expect?

What I want is (a) for Kemp to play, and (b) to play better, dammit!

Well if he learns to field, then Juan Pierre as a shortstop is a pretty useful player.

by BFDC on Aug 11, 2010 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don’t like the Juan Pierre comparisons, even if I started it. Pierre was a decent major league player who got on base at a good clip, being Pierre isn’t a bad thing.

The problem with any player who has no power ability is he’s already shorted himself the best possible outcome of a hit. But a player who can get on base at a good clip at short stop, which is already an offense-depleted position, is above-average. Someone who can provide above-average defense at the same time is very valuable.

I mean, you’re looking at a league where the highest on-base percentage by any every day shortstop is .366 right now. A .300 batting average would put him in the top tier of short stops and a .330 BA would probably make him the best on-base shortstop in the game.

The excessive hype around Gordon should be tamed, but the kid could be a very good short stop for the Dodgers.

I'm OK with Kemp getting a day off

here and there. After all, he has started 108 of the (now) 114 games, tied with James Loney for most on the team.

However, three full days off is bullshit unless Kemp is hurt (which he said yesterday he was not) or if he pulled some shit like the Schaefer incident again.

Riding the hot hand is stupid, but at the very least Torre should be consistent about it. Podsednik is hitting .220/.291/.260 as a Dodger, yet he has played every inning of every game since arriving from KC.

If you want to bench Kemp against a tough RHP, fine but be consistent. Bench Ethier’s ass against LHP, too. Or Podsednik. Let Reed Johnson do his thing.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 11, 2010 1:16 PM PDT reply actions   1 recs

Bingo. Kemp, fairly or not, has been used as the organizational scapegoat this year, and benching him on two different occasions only reinforces that idea. Obviously he hasnt been what we all expected this year, but to play Scott Podsednik or Jay Gibbons over him for consecutive days is crazy. With all that has gone on with Kemp this year, I just dont see him as a Dodger by 2012. Which is sad to say or even thing for a guy who put up a stud season last year and has the ability to be one of the handful of best players in the game.

by Ivdown on Aug 11, 2010 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Kemp and a whole lot of prospects for Greinke is much more realistic. Even if you want to ignore the defensive metrics Kemp is a centerfielder with a .317 on base that has 20 million coming to him in the next two years.

by regfairfield on Aug 11, 2010 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

This is clearly not the normal year for Kemp, so it would be selling low on Kemp

and there is absolutely no way Ned could honestly sell Kemp off as a .317 OBP CF with bad defense…he will sell him on the lifetime .290 hitter who won a GG and a SS last season and is still only 25 or 26.

"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"

by regfairfield on Aug 11, 2010 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions

just a note: Greinke’s having a bad year too, or maybe just a sub-standard year. Kemp for Greinke isn’t ridiculous, considering Greinke is owed 13.5 mil the next two years as well.

http://www.dingersblog.com

by dingers on Aug 11, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Comparing pitching and hitting WARs really doesn’t work but:

Greinke: 3.5
Kemp: .4

Even if you want to give Kemp a lot more credit for his defense, a down year Greinke is a hell of a lot better than Kemp right now.

by regfairfield on Aug 11, 2010 2:41 PM PDT up reply actions

WAR penalized Kemp a lot for the early first half defense problems. Fangraphs WAR has him at those, but B-R, which values defense using Baseball Info Solutions’ stuff, has Kemp more valuable.

Kemp: 2.0 WAR
Greinke: 1.1 WAR

B-R’s WAR is warming up to me, BIS is awesome. I have a friend working there, they have about 100 different ways of scoring a defensive play.

Even if you take the “answer is in the middle” road, they’re not that far apart and the money evens it out.

http://www.dingersblog.com

by dingers on Aug 11, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought B-R used Total Zone which doesn’t even use PBP metrics, or is that just for older stuff.

Kemp’s been fine defensively since the first two weeks, but taking those away is like if he started off 0 for 50 and saying it doesn’t count. Even if you give Kemp credit for being an average fielder, Greinke’s better now, was better in the past, and is signed to a pretty similar contract.

by regfairfield on Aug 11, 2010 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

And I say that without even looking at the numbers you posted.

B-R WAR uses Runs Allowed for pitchers, right?

by regfairfield on Aug 11, 2010 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions

How is Fangraphs’ pitcher WAR calculated?

http://www.dingersblog.com

by dingers on Aug 11, 2010 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s based on X-FIP.

by regfairfield on Aug 11, 2010 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

figured that much, I was wondering why starters seem to have a hefty lead in WAR and why there’s such a huge gap between Kemp and Greinke on Fangraphs vs. B-R.

You know why?

http://www.dingersblog.com

by dingers on Aug 11, 2010 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

If I had to guess, it’s that replacement level for pitchers is way worse than replacement level for position players. So many crappy pitchers get used every year that the good ones look even better.

I’d have to look more on how B-R calculates its stuff to figure out how Greinke loses 2.5 wins between the two.

by regfairfield on Aug 11, 2010 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions

B-R’s takes the runs allowed by the pitcher, then factors in the runs expected by a replacement pitcher in a replacement defense. Then it adds in the pitcher’s actual defense and comes out with the runs above replacement.

http://www.dingersblog.com

by dingers on Aug 11, 2010 3:29 PM PDT up reply actions

since the Royals’ defense is “average,” by the B-R standard, Greinke’s expected runs allowed are his actual runs allowed.

http://www.dingersblog.com

by dingers on Aug 11, 2010 3:30 PM PDT up reply actions

That does seem like a better method than just using FIP.

by regfairfield on Aug 11, 2010 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

This isn't new

Its the same as judging diversity by number of managers, and they have been doing it in both the NFL and MLB for awhile now.

But as a sports writer you can talk about how race is affecting some random aspect of any sport, slap a SSS statistic on it and have media from around the country talking about it, good or bad.

For Ivdown

How does the draft on The Show work? Are you picking actual players in the majors/minors or a bunch of no-name amateurs?

by silverwidow on Aug 11, 2010 3:28 PM PDT reply actions

It's made up players, there's no way to get the rights to the actual players unfortunately

It works the same exact way with free agency and compensation picks, so it does affect you if you want to go sign like 15 type A free agents, which is really great IMO.

"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"

by Ivdown on Aug 11, 2010 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Like actual players in the farm systems or like all the levels? It has A, AA, and AAA (though you can’t play with the A teams), just with many fake players, and some real prospects, but they had to have made an MLB appearance first.

by Ivdown on Aug 11, 2010 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Aren't minor leaguers part of the MLBPA?

If the licensing agreement with MLBPA is for MLB players, it would stand to reason that they could also include MiLB players if they wanted to pony up the dough.

I’d buy it and trade for Hellickson and Trout, like, now.

because I remember the HGH testing or something they were gonna start in the minors

by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 11, 2010 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions

I think they are and they just negotiated the testing differently so they wouldn’t tarnish the reputation of established players.

I'm not sure what the rights are like for first party publishers

but we had minor league players in our games. If they weren’t part of the MLBPA, then their stats were used but they were given a made up name.

If they play at any of the major universities, they are probably making enough money just playing football.

In all seriousness, as a college athlete, I thought it was BS that the school wanted me to spend my whole day going to class and practicing without giving me a chance to study/work and still carry a minimum GPA and be able to afford tuition/books/housing/gas/general operating expenses. The GPA part was cake, but there is no reason why a student participating in a school event that makes the school money should not see part of the proceeds to cover their expenses.

Only reason I'm considering getting a PS3

is because Baseball Mogul pisses me off. Be the biggest spender in scouting, farm system and med staff, have players with 90s/100 in health and yet when I play at a harder mode the only thing that seems to change is that everybody gets hurt more.

That, and I shouldn’t be able to trade James Loney for Evan Longoria.
