Dodgers Seek Series Win In Philadelphia

The Dodgers have lost all five playoff games in Philadelphia in the last two years, and they were swept in four games here in 2008, but the Dodgers have won three-game series in the city of brotherly love in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009, so the city hasn't been all that bad to them.

If the Dodgers have any designs on making a playoff run, they should probably win a game started by Clayton Kershaw against Joe Blanton. The Phillies are still without Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, but Shane Victorino is back tonight, as he has been activated from the disabled list. The Dodgers are 2-5 in rubber games of three-game series on the road this season.

Notes

  • The Dodgers have scored double-digit runs nine times this season, and have averaged 3.22 runs per game in the next game out, including last night's shutout loss. They have been shutout 13 times, and in the games immediately following the previous 12 shutouts, they have averaged 3.83 runs per game.
  • Andre Ethier is hitting .361/.439/.639 with eight runs scored and seven RBI in nine games this month.
  • Jamey Carroll is second on the Dodgers with 41 walks (the injured Russell Martin leads the club with 48 free passes), and his 13.8% walk rate is the highest of his career.
  • The Dodgers are tied with the Giants for the National League lead in quality starts since the All-Star break with 17 (the NL average during that time is 13.4 per team)
  • In the upcoming four-game series with the Braves this weekend, the Dodgers will again miss Chipper Jones, who is out for the season with a torn ACL, writes David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Jones also missed all four games when the Braves were at Dodger Stadium in June, and missed the final three games in Los Angeles last season.

The Dodgers’ spending in this draft could be historically low. They have signed eight of their top 10 picks and spent about $1.3 million on them, according to Baseball America. The Dodgers aren’t expected to sign their two unsigned top-10 picks, Lee and sixth-rounder Kevin Gausman.

The New York Mets had the lowest draft budget of any team last year, spending a total of $3.1 million, including $1.9 million on their top 10 picks. The Mets didn’t have a first-round pick.

Per Dylan H:

Kemp back in the lineup. Playing CF and batting sixth.

Don’t know what the lineup is, but here’s my guess:
Pods
Theriot
Ethier
Loney
Blake
Kemp
Carroll
Ausmus
Kershaw

That is so god awful.

The fact that Torre prefers Theriot in the 2 spot over Carroll due to his speed advantage is very demoralizing.

No, but if they’re both playing in the game, it doesn’t really matter in one game where they’re positioned in the lineup.

by Xeifrank on Aug 12, 2010 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s not what it’s designed to do. wOBA is linear weights scaled to league average OBP, no park factors.

I’d really like it to if we’re gonna use it as the offensive stat of record though.

by regfairfield on Aug 12, 2010 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

But we use it throughout the year, no matter what, park factors in OPS+ don’t come out until the year is over.

They use the last years which is way better than nothing.

Right

lineup construction doesn’t matter a whole lot. It matters, just not a whole lot.

Theriot vs Carroll, 2 vs 7 hole = doesn’t matter
Ethier batting third vs Ethier batting 8th? = Yeah, that matters over the long haul.

Sure.

you’re on a short list of people with that suggestion.

by Tommy Blackjack on Aug 12, 2010 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd be on that list

but with different folks then Lindsey or Mitchell. I’d be benching Andre against LHP before I bench James. Most RH hitting 1st baseman are fairly crappy fielders and are really DH in NL clothing. While RH hitting Right Fielders for some reason are good fielders.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Aug 12, 2010 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions

if you wouldn’t want Lindsey or Mitchell, then you really wouldn’t be on that list.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 12, 2010 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

James Loney is hitting .230 .269 .325 against left handers this year.

Mitchell is at .417 .481 .757 at AAA against left handers

and Lindsey is at .431 .477 .725 at AAA against left handers.

How Could I not want that?

by Table on Aug 12, 2010 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

because

someone will show you their MLE pretty soon.

by Tommy Blackjack on Aug 12, 2010 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Mitchell’s MLE against lefties is like a .920 OPS. It owns, but it’s also the only time Mitchell as done anything nearly like that.

by regfairfield on Aug 12, 2010 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

And Lindsey?

He’s done it many times, just all in the Dodgers org.

"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"

by Ivdown on Aug 12, 2010 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

It would still be better than Loney though.

Fine trade for Gaby Sanchez then. Marlins have Logan Morrison on the way. Sanchez destroys left handers and is way below average against right handers. Also cheap. Though I don’t know which prospects it would take to get him.

by Table on Aug 12, 2010 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I doubt many here would disagree that the team would benefit were Loney to sit against LHP, but Lindsey and Mitchell aren’t really the answers.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 12, 2010 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Jay Gibbons has a history in the major leagues

Mitchell is still developing

Jay Gibbons is a bad baseball player. People well tell you you’re wrong when you want to use bad baseball players.

by regfairfield on Aug 12, 2010 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

But why did you bring him up? Because he had a good 9 plate appearances?

by Eric Stephen on Aug 12, 2010 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Why do you think Lindsey and Mitchell are not real answers?

I’m guessing because you don’t think AAA stats (PCL in particular) are worth anything in MLB. Gibbons has not proven that he can sustain value, but he has shown that in a snap shot he can provide an upgrade. He provides an upgrade on GA, I think Lindsey could provide an upgrade on Loney. Where is the beef?

by Table on Aug 12, 2010 2:11 PM PDT up reply actions

The beef is that I don’t think Mitchell nor Lindsey would be upgrades over Loney.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 12, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't understand why.

Did a AAA slugger call you names in high school or something? lol JK

by Table on Aug 12, 2010 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I'll take this

regarding Lindsey. Instead of us doing your legwork, show us ONE major league who was in the AAA at age 32 who has never had an at bat and who had any type of a useful career. And then we will discuss Mr. Lindsey.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Eric Stephen on Aug 12, 2010 2:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Give me a sec to research that.

Off the top of my head there was that guy on the Braves this year that hit a grand slam in his first at bat…I think.

Anyways, I would challenge you to find a case in which a 32 year old AAA slugger of Lindsey’s caliber was given a fair chance but failed to produce at the MLB level.

The lack of success is directly related to the number of chances of course.

No, but your point is that you want to fill the bench with players who’s one asset is the ability to hit left handed pitching. This sounds great until things like injuries happen and your platoon guys need to play every day.

If you put too many one tool players on a bench, no matter where they come from, you’re just asking to get screwed at some point.

by regfairfield on Aug 12, 2010 2:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

much better to fill the bench with Carroll, GA, Ausmus, Belliard(leffy killer), Reed Johnson (lefty Killer).

by Phil Gurnee on Aug 12, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah....no

First of all, how would having Mitchell on the bench change the quality of a Loney injury replacement? Mtichell would probably replace Loney anyways. Or someone comparable.

Second, a bench of Hu, Ellis, Mitchell, Blake, and Hoffman would be by far the most flexible bench the Dodgers have had in years.

by Table on Aug 12, 2010 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Assuming you mean Carroll instead of Blake, that’s no better than what we have now.

by regfairfield on Aug 12, 2010 2:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Here is the sort of roster I would want, it is vary roster flexible

Vs. Righties
Furcal
Carroll
Ethier
Beltre( just an example)
Loney
Kemp
Paul
Martin

Bench:
Ellis(backup catcher)

 Hu(middle infielder)

Hoffman(right handed platoon partner with Paul/backup centerfielder)

Mitchell(right handed Loney platoon partner/ backup corner infielder)

by Table on Aug 12, 2010 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

Hm I wrote more, that's weird

Blake( right handed platoon partner with Ethier in left/ backup at 1st, 3rd, and the corner outfield)

Against a left handed starter, Loney, Ethier, and Paul swap with Mitchell, Blake, and Hoffman respectively.

The guy is as bad at hitting lefties as they come. Yes I would be quite confident that Lindsey and Mitchell would be able to handle left handed mlb pitching better than Loney. Cheaper to do a platoon

with a Lacy/Lowenstien then spending the money on a Andre. I always thought teams who went platoon were the one’s without money.

That’s for two average/crappy guys. Platooning Dre would be more like Pujols/crappy and other guy.

by regfairfield on Aug 12, 2010 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions

that's true.

I would propose a Ethier/Blake platoon in left, a Paul/Hoffman platoon in right, and a Loney/Mitchell platoon at 1st. Though if we could trade for Gaby Sanchez he would be the perfect Loney platoon partner.

Maybe you’re right though. Maybe he sees it as a challenge.

by BFDC on Aug 12, 2010 3:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ll absolutely make that argument. He’s the head of scouting for an MLB team. If he whines about his lack of a budget I could care less. There’s only so many baseball teams out there.

by Michael White on Aug 12, 2010 3:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Its not like I would expect him to just quit and retire, but he’s one of the most respected scouts/assistant GM’s in the game. If he gets an offer to go somewhere where the FO isn’t dysfunctional and doesn’t tell him to punt picks, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take it.

by BFDC on Aug 12, 2010 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s a lot of “if’s”.

Okay, if all that happens, and if the McCourts don’t sell the team, then I wouldn’t be suprised to see him take it either.

And I’ll get over it.

by Michael White on Aug 12, 2010 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

in 110 games? That's quite the sample size you've got there.

Also with a .329 OBP career.

Even if it’s driven by high averages it’s still been kept up to this point.

As Ucla said he's a DH

he’s going to have to be one hell of a hitter to make up for it. And while he might become that guy, he’s not someone I’d be trading Kemp for. Then again I hate DH’s so I’m biased.

Cubs tack on a run, 3-1 Cubbies now

… as Matt Cain just gave up a 2 out double to the pitcher Randy Wells. Cubs still batting.

by Xeifrank on Aug 12, 2010 2:00 PM PDT reply actions

That was partially result of Dave Flemming jinxing it

by saying Hill can’t hit (so he gets a hit) and then basically “no biggie, pitcher’s up” (pitcher gets an RBI hit).

ThenBurrell hits another frickin home run and makes it 3-2.

Yea, apparently the one counted. It was for a help desk level 1/2 position. I have been trying to get my foot in the door for IT vocation, and this looked like my best opportunity to date. The 2 interviews went great. They apparently talked about it half the day and went with the other choice. It is actually my buddies job and he just told me that the 4 actual IT people involved thought I was the best choice. It is nice to hear, but it still sucks.
