I called in once
To ask if Sherrill’s issues earlier this season stemmed from weight loss. I guess I’m the only one who thinks he looked thinner at the beginning of the season.

Sometimes I wonder.
Our threads feature a curious and at-times concerning back-and-forth between outright elation and white-hot anger (calling for murder or suicide or murder-suicide) all in the course of one inning. It’s a real piece of work and a fantastic social experiment in progress.
As much as thumbing our noses at the inferiority of DT callers might be fun, it gets old quickly. Especially this season, cheering for the team seems downright masochistic, but ragging on fans who don’t possess the (baseball) knowledge of most of the members on this site amounts to nothing more than ego-stroking. Do keep in mind these are still Dodgers fans and it would benefit all of us to raise everyone’s collective games even if it means stepping down from our perches and calling in.
It’d also be a great way to boost readership of Eric and Co’s blog.
I admit, this forum is full of baseball snobs. But I don’t care that callers of Dodger Talk are Dodger fans. Why would I? I come here because I like to talk baseball with smart Dodger fans. If I wanted to talk about superficial Dodger crap I would engage my co-workers.
Snob position to take? Yup. But I like that I can learn stuff from people here, and see no redeeming value in listening to idiots on DT.
I’d rather talk to smart Rockies or Pirate fans than listen to idiot Dodger fans.
by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't mind the snob position at all.
I was just putting it out there that the people who could best bring the level of conversation up at DT would be TBLA’s own. Why have one outlet for smart baseball talk when you can have two? More TBLA people calling in = less idiot callers calling in. By extension, maybe idiot callers start becoming smarter callers. I’m just saying that given the critical mass of knowledgeable baseball thinkers here, we could dictate the conversation.
That is, instead of listening in and then
making snarky comments from a distance. This doesn’t include you.
Hope he turns out to be a
Goulden God.

The last times the Dodgers were shut out in back to back ...
- games: April 25 and 27 this year vs. the Nats and the Mets on the road.
- days: June 12-13, 2008, by the Padres and Tigers on the road
- days/games by the same team: August 7-8, 2007 in Cincinnati, which followed being shutout in LA by Arizona the day before
Three consecutive games shut out is the Los Angeles Dodgers record. The other two times were:
- April 23-25, 1966 against the Cubs (two in Chicago) and Cardinals at home
- Sept 29 – Oct 1, 1962 versus the Cardinals (twice at home) and the Giants in SF (game 163 of the season), part of a rather famous Dodgers stretch run collapse.

Thanks for the concern about the car, guys. As for the police report, we called but they were really backed up and said we would have to hold forever, plus come down to the station. It just wasnt worth doing that.
Not sure what they used at the car wash…because they wouldnt tell us! Nice guys, but I’m sure it was something simple because they got it off in a hurry. I’m just glad its over with.
It’s probably some industrial strength cleaner. I have had that used when I got a bunch of sap on my car (used to park under a tree at my old apartment).
I would bet they would sell that cleaner at any auto parts store.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions
Sorry to hear that, man.
We had our car broken into, and I asked the police to come up to do a report and fingerprints, etc., and they basically said, nah, we don’t bother with that.

Torre won’t announce whether he’ll be back next year until #Dodgers are officially eliminated from — or have secured spot in — playoffs.
If he doesn’t come back, who do we want to be the next manager?
People don't think it be like this, but it do.
I’d be OK with a complete staff overhaul. I don’t see that happening with Mattingly.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Didn’t they already say Mattingly would manage in the AFL this year? Just another unnecessary announcement that makes it awkward to go back on later. Would be great if they could find some real “player’s coaches” who actually knew how to deal with players from this quarter century.

If they hire Mattingly as the next manager, then maybe he takes some advisor job to ease Mattingly’s transition?
People don't think it be like this, but it do.
That'd be awkward for Donnie.

Sands playing 1B today.
If he can continue to progress and learn the 1B position well enough, considering our OF depth in the minor leagues we should be able to fill the one outfield vacancy within the organization by 2012 and presumably 1B as well.

Manny on Waivers
Would any NL team claim him? Maybe the Giants? If he cleared all the NL teams, I think the Chisox would be a strong possibility. The Redsox need him, but I don’t think they would go there even to keep him from the Rays. If the Rays could afford him, I think they would definitely make a claim. He’s just what they need.
Nobody is going to claim him, because they don’t want to be on the hook for his remaining salary.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions
if someone claims him, they won’t have to.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions
If he gets claimed, we might try to get something for him by taking a couple mil off that tab with the threat that if the claiming team doesn’t give us anything we’re going to make them pay the whole thing.
Course, I guess if you’re putting a claim out there you have to have already been prepared to take on his salary.
Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.
Right, but that would happen after he gets unclaimed.
by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions
It would be
if they didn’t only offer the Dodgers a nothing prospect and want them to pick up all but $1m on July 31.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions
It doesn't matter our relaitve position
it matters where the Sox stand. The Dodgers will definitely place Manny on waivers, but it will only depend on the respective claiming team(s) whether or not he will be claimed.
I don’t think there’s a chance at all he gets claimed.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions
We might not have been in it, but we thought we were. The Chisox are only a game back, and if they can afford it, I think they would do it. Give them a leg up on signing for next year.
I’m saying the Sox were in it then, too, and they weren’t willing to pay anything more than $1 million. Nothing tells me they are willing to now, either.

Line drive in the boxscore for Lowe.
I predict Lowe will get ejected as he walks into the dugout for arguing that Carroll pitch after he gives up 2 more runs.

More McCourt bullshit
from Bill Shaikin / LA TImes:
The Dodgers have talked about creative ways their Chavez Ravine property could generate revenue for ownership. One such deal, a head-scratcher, is already in place: The team has been charging itself rent — $14 million this year — on Dodger Stadium property it owns.
The arrangement is documented in public court filings connected to the divorce between Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and his estranged wife, Jamie, the team’s former president and chief executive.
The amount of rent is unusual in that it is far greater than what has been paid by teams with an independent landlord.
More creative accounting
Well of course
Frank gets the team…
…and Jamie gets the real estate.

Terry Adams
Dennis Powell
Bob Welch
10 hits against Lowe tonight
In Derek Lowe’s career, he has allowed 10 hits 25 times. His team is 5-20 in those games, and he has lost his last 9 such games, dating back to 2006. Dating back to 2004, Lowe’s teams are 1-18 in his 10-hit games

I think there is a low chance (20%) the Dodgers pick it up. They don’t have the budget for a $4.5m non-closer.

Serious question, if Lee is being asked to red-shirt at LSU, can he really be that good of an athlete that he should command a $5MM bonus from LAD?
Maybe this kid has just got a great PR team.
He was also supposedly going to be considered for the starting QB job as a freshman.
by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions
Serious question: I’m not much of a serious baseball nerd, but is a good change up worth anything without at least a decent fastball?
by Riffraffselbow on Aug 14, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions
$5m is probably way too high
but a bonus of $3-4m would be within reason. Not too many freshmen start at QB, let alone play much.

I don't see the correlation between
redshirting as a QB in football, and commanding a 5MM bonus
by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 14, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions
The correlation is that he was being talked up as a football player and baseball player. If LSU is finding that the talk wasn’t in line with his talent level I’m wondering if LAD will find that as well.

I love Kuo's intensity.
If everyone played like that and still had the same outcome, there’d be a lot less frustration for all involved. That said, if everyone played like Kuo, you wouldn’t be in a shitty position to begin with. Nevermind a team consisting of all Hatteberg’s. Give me a team full of Kuo’s. Dominant pitching, bat flips to entertain. All you need is a lot of duct tape for that arm!
