I called in once

To ask if Sherrill’s issues earlier this season stemmed from weight loss. I guess I’m the only one who thinks he looked thinner at the beginning of the season.

Because we have an outlet to express our opinion intelligently.

Sometimes I wonder.

Our threads feature a curious and at-times concerning back-and-forth between outright elation and white-hot anger (calling for murder or suicide or murder-suicide) all in the course of one inning. It’s a real piece of work and a fantastic social experiment in progress.

As much as thumbing our noses at the inferiority of DT callers might be fun, it gets old quickly. Especially this season, cheering for the team seems downright masochistic, but ragging on fans who don’t possess the (baseball) knowledge of most of the members on this site amounts to nothing more than ego-stroking. Do keep in mind these are still Dodgers fans and it would benefit all of us to raise everyone’s collective games even if it means stepping down from our perches and calling in.

It’d also be a great way to boost readership of Eric and Co’s blog.

by soccerman8 on Aug 14, 2010 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions

I admit, this forum is full of baseball snobs. But I don’t care that callers of Dodger Talk are Dodger fans. Why would I? I come here because I like to talk baseball with smart Dodger fans. If I wanted to talk about superficial Dodger crap I would engage my co-workers.

Snob position to take? Yup. But I like that I can learn stuff from people here, and see no redeeming value in listening to idiots on DT.

I’d rather talk to smart Rockies or Pirate fans than listen to idiot Dodger fans.

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't mind the snob position at all.

I was just putting it out there that the people who could best bring the level of conversation up at DT would be TBLA’s own. Why have one outlet for smart baseball talk when you can have two? More TBLA people calling in = less idiot callers calling in. By extension, maybe idiot callers start becoming smarter callers. I’m just saying that given the critical mass of knowledgeable baseball thinkers here, we could dictate the conversation.

by soccerman8 on Aug 14, 2010 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions

That is, instead of listening in and then

making snarky comments from a distance. This doesn’t include you.

The last times the Dodgers were shut out in back to back ...
  • games: April 25 and 27 this year vs. the Nats and the Mets on the road.
  • days: June 12-13, 2008, by the Padres and Tigers on the road
  • days/games by the same team: August 7-8, 2007 in Cincinnati, which followed being shutout in LA by Arizona the day before

Three consecutive games shut out is the Los Angeles Dodgers record. The other two times were:

  • April 23-25, 1966 against the Cubs (two in Chicago) and Cardinals at home
  • Sept 29 – Oct 1, 1962 versus the Cardinals (twice at home) and the Giants in SF (game 163 of the season), part of a rather famous Dodgers stretch run collapse.

You could make a case that both strike 1 and 3 to Pods were borderline (one outside, one inside), but either way it’s tough to call both strikes. That’s a wide zone.

Thanks for the concern about the car, guys. As for the police report, we called but they were really backed up and said we would have to hold forever, plus come down to the station. It just wasnt worth doing that.

Not sure what they used at the car wash…because they wouldnt tell us! Nice guys, but I’m sure it was something simple because they got it off in a hurry. I’m just glad its over with.

It’s probably some industrial strength cleaner. I have had that used when I got a bunch of sap on my car (used to park under a tree at my old apartment).

I would bet they would sell that cleaner at any auto parts store.

Didn’t they already say Mattingly would manage in the AFL this year? Just another unnecessary announcement that makes it awkward to go back on later. Would be great if they could find some real “player’s coaches” who actually knew how to deal with players from this quarter century.

If he can continue to progress and learn the 1B position well enough, considering our OF depth in the minor leagues we should be able to fill the one outfield vacancy within the organization by 2012 and presumably 1B as well.

Manny on Waivers

Would any NL team claim him? Maybe the Giants? If he cleared all the NL teams, I think the Chisox would be a strong possibility. The Redsox need him, but I don’t think they would go there even to keep him from the Rays. If the Rays could afford him, I think they would definitely make a claim. He’s just what they need.

by Duranimal on Aug 14, 2010 4:58 PM PDT reply actions

Nobody is going to claim him, because they don’t want to be on the hook for his remaining salary.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions

around $5.25m if today, for instance.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions

If he shows he’s healthy beforehand, I think it could happen. He does sell tickets.

by Duranimal on Aug 14, 2010 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Dodgers could also pick up some of the tab.

by Duranimal on Aug 14, 2010 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

if someone claims him, they won’t have to.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, that’s true.

by Duranimal on Aug 14, 2010 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions

If he gets claimed, we might try to get something for him by taking a couple mil off that tab with the threat that if the claiming team doesn’t give us anything we’re going to make them pay the whole thing.

Course, I guess if you’re putting a claim out there you have to have already been prepared to take on his salary.

Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.

by G.Scott on Aug 14, 2010 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Right, but that would happen after he gets unclaimed.

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Still if the Chisox claimed Rios, claiming Manny would be a no brainer.

by Duranimal on Aug 14, 2010 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

It would be

if they didn’t only offer the Dodgers a nothing prospect and want them to pick up all but $1m on July 31.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s when we were in, though. Different circumstances now.

by Duranimal on Aug 14, 2010 5:05 PM PDT up reply actions

We weren’t in it then either

by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions

It doesn't matter our relaitve position

it matters where the Sox stand. The Dodgers will definitely place Manny on waivers, but it will only depend on the respective claiming team(s) whether or not he will be claimed.

I don’t think there’s a chance at all he gets claimed.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

We might not have been in it, but we thought we were. The Chisox are only a game back, and if they can afford it, I think they would do it. Give them a leg up on signing for next year.

by Duranimal on Aug 14, 2010 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m saying the Sox were in it then, too, and they weren’t willing to pay anything more than $1 million. Nothing tells me they are willing to now, either.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I wonder if you could have conversations in advance and tell teams that if he’s claimed, we’ll kick in a certain amount?

More McCourt bullshit

from Bill Shaikin / LA TImes:

The Dodgers have talked about creative ways their Chavez Ravine property could generate revenue for ownership. One such deal, a head-scratcher, is already in place: The team has been charging itself rent — $14 million this year — on Dodger Stadium property it owns.

The arrangement is documented in public court filings connected to the divorce between Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and his estranged wife, Jamie, the team’s former president and chief executive.

The amount of rent is unusual in that it is far greater than what has been paid by teams with an independent landlord.

More creative accounting

by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 6:29 PM PDT reply actions

Jansen does not care for late inning home runs.

by Alex41592 on Aug 14, 2010 6:29 PM PDT reply actions

I have been doing some thinking and I have come to the conclusion that I think that this year will really help out Kemp, Ethier, and Loney next year because now they know more what to expect without Manny.

It's a mutual option

I think there is a low chance (20%) the Dodgers pick it up. They don’t have the budget for a $4.5m non-closer.

Lyons is talking about a new role for Kuo. Did the Dodgers name him the new closer?

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 7:01 PM PDT reply actions

No shit. Is he still limited to not pitching back to back games?

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 7:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Dotel will close in games Kuo is not available.

by silverwidow on Aug 14, 2010 7:07 PM PDT reply actions

Serious question, if Lee is being asked to red-shirt at LSU, can he really be that good of an athlete that he should command a $5MM bonus from LAD?

Maybe this kid has just got a great PR team.

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 7:09 PM PDT reply actions

Supposedly he has a major league change up right now.

by silverwidow on Aug 14, 2010 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

He was also supposedly going to be considered for the starting QB job as a freshman.

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

Serious question: I’m not much of a serious baseball nerd, but is a good change up worth anything without at least a decent fastball?

by Riffraffselbow on Aug 14, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Elite change ups make us salivate.

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Trevor Hoffman has throws 84 for the last decade. It’s not about how good your fastball is, it’s about the movement and location of both and the speed differential between the two pitches.

Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.

by G.Scott on Aug 14, 2010 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

$5m is probably way too high

but a bonus of $3-4m would be within reason. Not too many freshmen start at QB, let alone play much.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 14, 2010 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Start? Probably not, but the report yesterday says he’s blocked through his junior year.

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

But a lot can happen in a year. A player can underperform and he can battle for the starting job in the spring. Its not unheard of.

by vadodger on Aug 14, 2010 7:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes because for a freshman qb to redshirt in the SEC is pretty standard.

by vadodger on Aug 14, 2010 7:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m not getting into that conversation with you again.

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

As soon as I typed it I wanted to put a disclaimer that I was not saying anything about SEC football and didn’t want to start that discussion again

by vadodger on Aug 14, 2010 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't see the correlation between

redshirting as a QB in football, and commanding a 5MM bonus

by SeanMillerSavior on Aug 14, 2010 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

The correlation is that he was being talked up as a football player and baseball player. If LSU is finding that the talk wasn’t in line with his talent level I’m wondering if LAD will find that as well.

by Michael White on Aug 14, 2010 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

LeBron should borrow Zach Lee’s PR staff.

This is nice though.

by Alex41592 on Aug 14, 2010 7:16 PM PDT reply actions

What was Broxton’s problem again? Throwing hard but struggling with location? Kuo has been pitching a Broxton-esque ball-filled 9th.

by megaballs on Aug 14, 2010 7:18 PM PDT reply actions

I love Kuo's intensity.

If everyone played like that and still had the same outcome, there’d be a lot less frustration for all involved. That said, if everyone played like Kuo, you wouldn’t be in a shitty position to begin with. Nevermind a team consisting of all Hatteberg’s. Give me a team full of Kuo’s. Dominant pitching, bat flips to entertain. All you need is a lot of duct tape for that arm!

by soccerman8 on Aug 14, 2010 7:18 PM PDT reply actions

I wonder if playing like that contributed to the four surgeries on one joint?
