August 15th, Dodgers vs Braves - Simulation

I used my simulator to simulate 100000 baseball games between the Dodgers and the Braves using what to the best of my knowledge will be close to today's starting lineups.  The simulator outputs a win probability for each team, along with the average total runs scored, a distribution matrix of all the final scores and how often they occurred, and an averaged box score tally of all games combined.  The simulator takes into account such things as defense, park factors, home field advantage, pitchers tiring and a proprietary set of hitter and pitcher projections that are calibrated on a daily basis.  There are many references to Vegas win probabilities.  This is just a measuring stick I use to determine how well my simulator does.  This by no means is meant as a tool to use to gamble on baseball games, it is more of an exercise in analyzing baseball games.  You may find it strange that there are so many one run games listed as the most likely score, and that the home team is always favored to win in the top couple of scores.  This is due to basic math and the way that baseball rules play out of having the home team bat last.  Here is a great article explaining this phenomenon.  Here are the latest Vegas MLB odds.

Today's Results... (Last simulation ran Saturday at 9:45 PM)

Visitors Home Pitching Matchup Favorite Vegas Win Prob Simulator Win Prob
 LAN ATL V.Padilla vs J.Jurrjens
ATL 56.71% 53.77%

Notes:  While, the Dodgers aren't quite yet facing mathematical elimination just yet, their season is on the brink.  They need to win these last two games in Atlanta in order to string us along for another few more games.  The simulator has the Braves as very slight favorites, and Vegas tacks on another 3% to the Braves win probability.  Should be another close game.  Get your game score and over/under guesses in.

Over/Under Questions:

1. Total runs both teams combined: 7.5
2. V.Padilla total batters faced: 25.5
3. Dodgers bullpen total strikeouts: 2.5
4. Braves number of home runs hit: 0.5
5. Braves runs scored minus Dodgers number of extra base hits: 0.5

Contest

Some time during the last month of the season, do we want to have some kind of weighted playoff favoring those at the top of the leaderboard, or do we just want to play out the rest of the season as we’ve been doing and crown the person with the most points as the champion? Thoughts?

by Xeifrank on Aug 14, 2010 10:06 PM PDT reply actions

play it out.

maybe take the top 8 and let them do the playoffs

Math for Dodgers being eliminated

Xel,

Any thought of doing a simulation of how many games the Dodgers can lose before being eliminated. Dodgers have 45 games left, I say they must win at least 33, which would give them 93 wins for the season. I t also means they can only lose 12 more games.

by wineracquet on Aug 15, 2010 10:15 AM PDT reply actions

What kind of threshold are you looking at? How many games they need to win to have a 50% chance of making the playoffs? How many games they need to win to have a 1% chance of making the playoffs etc… ?

by Xeifrank on Aug 15, 2010 10:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I’d be curious where everyone has to be with 5 games left for us to have a 50% chance. I bet it’s something stupid.
