Will The Giants Become the Dominant Team of the Early 2010's?
Yes, that title hurt me. As a Dodgers fan, how can I admit that the Giants will basically win multiple division titles over the rest of the NL West, including the Dodgers? But some jumbled facts in bullet point form.
- The Giants have new ownership who is willing to spend money to improve the team, or rather, their ownership group is willing to invest what they considered needed into the team. Only the Rockies could be considered to have just a stable relationship between its owners. Its not as if the Giants or Rockies owners are sleeping with each other like in other cases.
- The Padres, Dodgers, and D'Backs have recently, or currently gone though upheaval in ownership due to financial or marriage problems.
- The Dodgers, and D'backs still are paying tens of millions to players no longer on the team. Say what you will about players like Zito or Rowand. At least they are still contributing to the Giants in some form.
- The Padres, the other team realistically over have a two year window, this year and next year because Adrian Gonzales and Heath Bell can be free agents after 2011.
- The Rockies, who may be a formidable team at times are still managed by Jim Tracy. Fuck him.
- Each week, brings another article about how the McCourts are horrible people. This isn't really related to how the team on the field is doing but I just want to say. Fuck the McCourts.
- The Giants control Lincecum until 2013, Ztio until 2013, Cain until 2012, Sandoval until 2015, and Posey until 2016.

Dodgers still in the mix
Although the Giants have a good young core with the obvious people, I’m not worried about players like Sandoval, Zito, Ishikawa and Uribe. Once the McCourts are gone, we still have our own core of young players. If Martin and Kemp break up with their girlfriends, maybe they can re-capture their old selves. Lily, Bills, Kershaw and Kuroda arent a bad rotation.
So fuck the McCourts, Tracy and the Giants!
Everyone is in the Mix
Eric’s comment sums it up, the division going forward is wide open. Dodgers have had and still had the opportunity to open things up, if they would have or soon will put some dollars down to lock-up their really good young players. Giants have many questions including Timmy. Posey is definitely the real deal, Sandoval is a trade that the Giants may consider sooner rather than later. Hopefully we get past the Divorce soon and MLB gets off its ass and really starts to investigate the McCourts, the Shaklin article from yesterday regarding rent is at best stupid, but in my mind a huge Tax dodge. It is simply amazing how he has managed this franchise.
They still have Sabean who is a good bet to fuck stuff up.
Only one can dream that they’ll go after his former assistant when he’s gone, I’m sure Jeff Kent can give a good recommendation.
I think now that they’ve seen what a mediocre offense can do for that pitching staff, as opposed to having no offense the last couple years, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them as players for a couple offensive upgrades. My hope is that they sign Huff long term because the dude is infamous for having good year, bad year, good year, bad year tendencies.

Frank McCourt is investing what he considers needed. His figure is just lower than others.

HIS FIGURE IS WRONG!
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
is it really?
Seems like he is spending exactly as much as he needs to for us to appear competitive
Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.
in '08 and '09 it was more than just
appearing competitive….

giants will have to make a huge decision in the coming years. they started posey’s arbitration clock nearly making it certain he’ll reach super 2 status. and with linceum/cain/sanchez coming up for $$$ in the coming years one of those big 3 (if you can call those guys big) will have to get traded because of it. as a dodger fan all we can hope for is that they pull another aj pierzinsky “haul”
what you are forgetting
is that with Zittos contract is will be unlikely they will be able to afford Timmy and Cain
Everyone is in the mix (just saying ditto) and
SF has talent, young talent, but enough to last them over the other teams? Not that clear to me. They will have serious contract issues and there’s no guarantee that their “core of young pitching” is all going to maintain or stick around. And this year Lincecum hasn’t even pitched like he was supposed to. There are plenty of reasons to think they will compete and be dangerous, but just as many reasons to see them being erratic.
Dodgers will have their own issues of course, but I sure feel a heck of a lot better about their farm system and future, this month than I did 4 months ago.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
