This is freaking hilarious. I’m reading Joe Posnanksi’s newest blog post about “heart and hustle” in baseball. Apparently there is a Heart and Hustle award every year and each team gets a nominee. And of course, the nominee for the Dodgers is none other than……Matt Kemp!

Who called for the bunt
the coach or did he bunt on his own? I’d be curious to know, because managerial wise that is rather ridiculous to be playing for one run this early, esp when the guy is already in scoring position. Oh well.

If they were looking to move Broxton in the winter, would the other team take on all $7M?
I’m trying to figure out how to offer Lilly arb and still keep payroll ~100M. Non-tendering Martin is a big factor here.
If they trade Broxton there will be plenty of suitors that will gladly pay $7m
by Eric Stephen on Aug 15, 2010 10:46 AM PDT up reply actions
the payroll doesn't have to be under $100 million.
Its obvious that the Dodgers have the revenue to sustain a 100 million plus payroll if they choose to.
If you’re charging 14 million to yourself, and been paying over $100 million on payroll until 2008, I think you can do that.
My point is (and you know this)
We all know the Dodger (self imposed) budget will be around $100 million or so.
Any forecasting otherwise is wishcasting.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 15, 2010 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions
Except we know at least this year the team won't be competitive with a sub-100 million payroll.
The whole Dodgers business model is to build a team that can make the playoffs. If they can’t do that, and the team isn’t built for that in 2011, why should people visit the team?
They need to renegotiate their rent with the landlords first.

What do you guys think our chances are of giving Kershaw the same deal as Romero, Lester, Gallardo? 30.1 over 5.
Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.
Billingsley is too far along on his service time for that. Kershaw’s deal would have to start at Romero’s and move north. Same service time class, but CK is better.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 15, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions
Ya, you’d basically take off what, the first year of CK’s deal and add another of the last years. so probably like a 44/5?
Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.
No
he’s in the same service class as Romero (Romero will have 2 years exactly after 2010, Kershaw will have 2 years, 105 days). On a 5-year deal, the first year is the same, and just bump up the remaining 4 years slightly
by Eric Stephen on Aug 15, 2010 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions
No I meant for a Billingsley deal. You take off the first two years of the 30/5 and add on two of the 13mil deals on the end. Would give him roughly 55/5 with 3 FA years covered.
But of course, we should always avoid the 55/5 deal anyway, so the point is moot.
Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.
My question would be, why hasn’t this occurred to Ned Colletti?
And the answer is that Colletti and the rest of the front office must have flown a similar offer already and been rebuffed because Dave Stewart is going to kick the Dodgers’ ass.
He may not have been green lighted to make such a deal. Or he doesn’t trust a 22/25 year old, or pitchers are risky and he doesn’t want to guarantee anything he doesn’t have to, or…
Though, if Frank wanted some good PR, signing either of these guys to long term deals would kind of get the casual fan back.
Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.
No it wouldn’t.
The casual fan would require the team to trade for Miguel Cabrera or something.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 15, 2010 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions
Off the top of my head, 2011 free agents with name recognition:
Victor Martinez, Lance Berkman (option), Adam Dunn, Derek Jeter, Adrian Beltre (reaching), Crawford, Werth, Cliff Lee and then a slew of pitchers who are rehabbing but still name guys :Webb, Bedard, Duchscherer, Sheets, Harden, Javier Vazquez (refuses to play on the better coast).
Just not really anything there we could go after. We lucked into Manny because his team hated him.

I’m guessing 1985.
I know Gooden was 1.53, Tudor was 1.93-ish, and Orel was 2.03. There had to be 2 others. Hell, Fernando might have been 2.40-ish that season.

I know it’s crazy, but I kind of want him to stay. I think you can analyze the heck out of Colleti’s moves, but if we’re blaming this season on Torre, we have to then assume that they made the NLCS the last two years despite him, that they’d be world series winners with a replacement manager. He wants to get out fine, but I don’t think it’s the move that turns this team around

I’m in the camp that at least Larry Bowa has to go, but I don’t think Torre will fire him. So if that what it takes to get rid of Bowa, fine.
Bowa’s rep was well established before he came to the Dodgers.
by 68elcamino427 on Aug 15, 2010 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions
And his act has worn thin with the current group. One of Torre faults is that he doesn’t recognize players who are overworked and outlived their usefulness. This applies to coaches as well. The Dodgers may have needed Larry Bowa acting like a crazy fucker, but that day has gone.
Bowa really brings nothing
to the table other than acting like a dick for Torre.
I hate that we run his old, dumb ass out there daily and wonder why he acts like a dick.
It’s probably bc he is a dick.
Changes I'd like to see immediately

by Eric Stephen on Aug 15, 2010 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions
But this isn’t like finding a new position player. The replacement level doesn’t apply because you should be able to find an equally qualified manager out there. I realize if you count things like World Series titles, playoff appearances and wins you won’t find a more “qualified” manager, and I hope they don’t go find a Bobby Valentine who will just clash with the modern athlete, but a Mike Scioscia type (I’ve heard Tim Wallach is similar) who can work with players rather than let his coaches handle it, would be a nice change.
Besides, the game management couldn’t get much worse.

It’ll be cool for a week. He’ll screw up and he’ll fall in line.
Then you’ll complain how coaches should do their job and coach. Managers getting too involved.
The sun will rise and baseball managers will continue to suck.
I was referring to the manager talking to players, actually.
Still don’t get why Torre doesn’t do that.
I understood. He delegates to his coaches. The Braves are doing just fine with Bobby Cox who no doubt does the same thing. That’s just one example.
By talking I would assume you mean coaching. Since I would think Torre speaks to his players.
I don’t know about that. It doesn’t seem he talks about the important stuff. It took Kemp 3 days to actually ask about being benched in June, and the whole Orlando Hudson issue last year.
If you’re pulling that, I think you should at least be proactive with the player and tell him why he’s being benched.
Agree completely
Torre’s rep as a great communicator, from what I can tell, comes solely from his communications with the media.

Weaver has to retire after this year, right? Can’t see the Dodgers wanting him back, he’s in mid 30s, and trying to stage another comeback might not be worth it.

Has Padilla ever been hit while batting?
I’m surprised a team just doesnt throw at him instead of a teammate.
I still contend the idea of plunking the pitcher makes no sense. Plunk a guy who stands a chance to get on base anyway

Once this year
and once more thrown at.
But teams don’t go after the pitcher because they are too easy an out to waste.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 15, 2010 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions
They don't hit the pitcher
because it only helps the other team.
Hit ARod or Teixeira instead of Burnett
Exactly. Plus, as Padilla knows, hitting the clean up guy instead of the pitcher still works to turn the team upside down if it happens too frequently.
by Michael White on Aug 15, 2010 12:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Logically that makes sense..
But if the goal is to make the opposing pitcher stop throwing at your hitters…wouldnt hitting them send more of a message than a teammate?
I dont think Padilla cares if his teammates get hit…which is why he had so many problems in Texas.
If Padilla has to be worried about getting drilled in his AB…maybe he stop throwing inside as much.
I think they should hit ARod
then when he gets to first, pickoff and hit him again.

Now for some good news.
Disabled Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal has made enough recent improvement from a lower back strain that he might join Manny Ramirez on a Minor League rehab assignment this week. Furcal, who is eligible to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday, had a thorough workout Saturday — including batting practice in the cage — and felt well enough Sunday, when the Dodgers did not take BP on the field, to run aggressively in the outfield under the direction of trainer Stan Conte.
Time to take Padilla out was earlier

The new manager
They need a manager and a coaching staff that is in tune with both the players and the manager must also be able to deal with Upper Management. In fairness to Torre he has worked well with Upper Management in most cases, but his coaches, especially this year don’t seem to be meshing well with the players.
I am in the Wallach camp. After hearing Leo Mazonie on radio yesterday, I would love to see him as our pitching coach.
So, we need to hire our new coaching staff
based upon whether or not they will coddle Matt Kemp. Great! :)
No, those are not the only 2 options.
Both suggestions are killing ants with sledgehammers.

I’m not expecting Larry Bowa to change and suddenly act like he’s riding a unicorn and his favorite show is “My Little Ponies.”
Anyway, not sure why the Coaching staff should be extended. What makes this staff so much better than anyone else in MLB? If you could get fired after winning the manager of the year award, or making the playoffs, you can get fired for anything.
Sometimes, its best to make a change for the sake of change.

Raffy and Manny are still two of the best in the game, but what does it matter when you’re playing 60 games a year with replacement level players in their position.
Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.
The coaching staff will need to be able to extract the maximium number of wins from a 25 man roster that is filled with players being paid at or near the league miminum.
So an experienced minor league manager would make sense?
by 68elcamino427 on Aug 15, 2010 12:25 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm of the opinion
that managers don’t make much difference. They are all flawed, only a few less more so than others.
You are probably correct.
So then it makes sense for the Dodgers to pay MLB Manager minimum wage
(about $400,000 per?)
by 68elcamino427 on Aug 15, 2010 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions
The counter argument is that the Dodgers wouldn’t use the savings they made on the coaching staff and use it on payroll or acquiring more draftee signings. They’d just pocket it.
Possibly, but who cares?
If Xei is right and coaches don’t matter (and I agree) then spending just to spend is meaningless.
by Michael White on Aug 15, 2010 12:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I wasn’t disagreeing with the idea to replace the coaches, I was disagreeing with the notion that either Kemp had to go or the coaching staff had to go.
by Michael White on Aug 15, 2010 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions
Eh, I think this is the farthest Kemp can go with this coaching staff. Even if you think he’s a prima donna, the fact that its escalated into the public sphere should be worrisome.
Also, that it’s only one player is partly because they gotten rid of players who might have problems, with Stults, Hudson, Abreu and the like.
Correct me if I'm wrong
but I’ve heard shots about him in the public from coaches, front office, but I’ve never heard him say anything publicly about them.
I’m gonna go ahead and assume the coaches are the primadonnas.
Google before you Tweet. It's the new Think before you Speak.
I think the coaches need to get the fuck over it, but at this point, we have to believe with the smoke there is fire, right? There is obviously something about Kemp that rub the coaches the wrong way. This stuff isn’t just coming out of nowhere.
by Michael White on Aug 15, 2010 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Then again, should we care if Larry Bowa acts like a dick because of something Kemp did?
I used to think Scheafer was above all of this, but apparently not.
Should we care? I don’t know. I really don’t care about this stuff. Kemp and Stewart can want out, but it doesn’t matter and Torre and Bowa can cry but Colletti isn’t going to move Kemp.
They all need to act like professionals and keep it in-house.

I don’t agree with your first sentence. He was an MVP candidate last year, but why would this year be the true indicator of how far he can go with the current coaching staff?
by Michael White on Aug 15, 2010 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions
Because its a lot easier to coach when things are going well. When things aren’t, and the player is not responding to you, it should be used as a knock against you.
Other things like Russell Martin regressing, Ethier can’t playing defense, treating veterans like Blake and GA much differently than Kemp. In the end, it adds up to something.
Yes, blaming Ethier’s defense on the coaching staff might be incredulous, but considering how much the staff has gotten on Kemp for his misplays but won’t do the same for Ethier is to me a coaching failure since if anyone needs help with his fielding, its Ethier.
Is OPS+ adjusted for your position as well?

If the Dodgers get shut out
It would be their 15th of the season, a total they haven’t reached since 1992. Since coming to L.A., the high (or low) mark in this is 23 by the 1968 team.
For a full season in L.A., the mark for fewest times shut out for the Dodgers is 3 by the 1958 team.
The 1965 team, notorious for is anemic offense, was shut out just six times. The 1966 team was shut out 17 times.
In 1908, Brooklyn was shut out 24 times. And the 1953 Dodgers were shut out just once.
