Draft Day Dodger decision
This was our draft in 2010, for it to be a success the Dodgers pretty much need to sign Lee or Pederson. Kevin Gausman is also unsigned but he's seems like more of a dark horse then Zach Lee.
Steven Henson says the Dodgers are making a late push to sign Lee and does a great job in breaking down the options.
Eric Stephen of SB Nation LA gives five good reasons why the Dodgers should sign Zach Lee.
If Lee picks football over baseball, he will subject himself to a world of pain. In baseball, there are no other players trying to inflict physical harm.

I'm for Lee and Pederson
If it really is one not affecting the other.

Maybe the Dodgers were smart
to wait until Lee saw how difficult big time College football is.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
It was smart to wait until the last minute.
If MLB doesn’t allow deals to completed until the last minute anyway. The Gould deal last year was apprently done in mid July, but because it was overslot, it was announced at the last day or so.
That was a month of development time Gould lost that he could have spent in the AZL or Odgen. Maybe if he had that time, he could have been pitching in Low-A right now instead of Odgen.
Will.
No fan would vote that draft picks shouldn’t be signed since as fans we get all of the benefit of the signing with none of the cost.

In theory, one could vote for the ~$3 million to be spent elsewhere. But I plan to vote on what will happen anyway.

I voted for "sign Zach Lee only"
But either or is fine. If we miss Lee and sign Pederson, I still say it was a successful draft.

Yes surprising I know.
At this point he’s more immediately valuable to us as a pitcher than a QB. For all Miles’ posturing, there is no realistic way he sees the field this year. But with 4 pitchers going down for surgery in the last month plus whatever we lose today, Lee would be a starter day one this spring.
and FUSC. I so wanted to get a home and home done before Pete skipped town. We could just bring both trophies to both games, winner take all.

seems that way
Plus, Mike Slive is personally vetoing any plan to play a team coached by Kiffen (BEST OF LUCK with that btw)
not as true as it once was, though. this year starts home and homes with LSUvWVU (ok, but the orange bowl is still in the BCS right?) Penn St v Bama, and Crazy Jerry is trying to put together LSU v Oregon to open at the space dome next year.
USC does much better in non-conf (ND not withstanding) i wish our admins had the gumption to do it.

LSU v Oregon is intriguing though
But it’s hard for me to say LSU will win. Les hasn’t really been great against the better teams in the SEC for the last couple of years. LSU will be better again and I like their receiving core. Was a huge fan of Randle and I see he’s having a nice summer practice, maybe this is his break out year.

The Henson piece is very good
And specifically addresses the concern about what the Dodgers will get for their money wtih respect to Lee’s football opportunities. I suppose if everybody is going into the deal with eyes wide open — Lee knows what he has to do to earn the money, Dodgers know what risks they are taking — then it’s fine. Surprises = bad, Communication = good.
As for the above vote, I will abstain, because I can’t split my vote. My pull-it-out-of-my-ass prediction is their either both will sign, or neither will sign. Hmm, I suppose that can count as “The Field.” I’ll vote for that.

You really should go to Kansas to find your future wife
Chorus:
If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life,
Never make a pretty woman your wife.
So from my personal point of view,
Get an ugly girl to marry you.
Chorus
A pretty woman makes her husband look small,
And very often causes his downfall.
As soon as he marries her, then she starts,
To do the things that will break his heart.
But if you make an ugly woman your wife,
You’ll be happy for the rest of your life.
An ugly woman cooks meals all the time,
She’ll always give you peace of mind.
Chorus
Don’t let your friends say you have no taste,
Go ahead and marry anyway.
Her face is ugly, her eyes don’t match.
Take it from me, she’s a better catch.

Depending on how much you win (up to 75 mill i think now), you could try and get part ownership, if that’s possible, then give frank the extra money to sign our draft picks and extra money for free agents. This plan makes little to no sense.
Just give frank half the money you win if, and only if, he spends it on signing the draft picks and free agents. Woot, lol.

It makes sense if he thinks he can offer abitration and grab picks.
But he likely won’t offer arbitration.
I still don’t think he can risk it WRT Lilly.
by Michael White on Aug 16, 2010 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions
Lilly is the guy who would obtain max value for the pick though. A guy who isn’t going to get you first round talent in a trade, but allowing you two picks to get that in a draft should be worthwhile.
The argument goes, though, Lilly would accept, and maybe win in arb. Then you’re looking at, what, $14 million for Lilly? There goes the budget.

I know I asked last week if Lilly could be traded, and the answer was yes... next question...
what will the market be like for Lilly if he accepts/wins arb at $12 million? If he’s tradable — if somebody will take most of that salary off the Dodgers’ hands — isn’t the gamble worth the risk?
The Omar Moreno of this blog
by Humma Kavula on Aug 16, 2010 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions
I don’t think he’s very movable at $12m. They would have to eat something like $3-4m at least IMO, so they would be left with still a hole in the rotation, but $3-4m less to spend.

Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.

How much
are we likely to have budgeted for our #3 thru #5 starters for next year? Could Lilly at $10-$12 (for one year) be one of them?

Our budget sucks anyway, and if it forces the team to do moves like cut Theriot and use DeJesus somewhere, that's a net plus in my eyes.

This morning
Was thinking what it would be like if the Dodgers had a budget double the size. Yankee type budget.
Offseason plan would be:
1) Sign Cliff Lee
2) Sign Crawford
3) Re-sign Padilla and Kuroda
4) Sign De La Rosa
That would be pretty cool.
Back in reality, I would be happy with
1) Lock up Kershaw
2) Sign Bonderman and the cheapest of Kuroda, De La Rosa, Lilly and Padilla.
3) Give Trayvon a true look at the starting CF spot.
Signing JDLR would be awesome. I think he would fare a lot better at DS.

You want a 6 man rotation of
Lee
Kershaw
Billingsley
Kuroda
De La Rosa
Padilla
?
That would be sick, and it would keep the innings down for Kershaw and Bills too, lol.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Ha.
Should have been re-sign Padilla or Kuroda.

by Tommy Blackjack on Aug 16, 2010 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions
I liked the New Krypton arc, but then they had America commit wide scale genocide on the Kryptoians, blowing up the planet, and then actually blamed it on the Kryptoians. Its… well, it was just bad writing.
I have a collection
of Doomsday stories, that basically just shows how bad the writing got. It goes from Superman having to ingeniously trap Doomsday to neutralize him, to being able to beat him because “Now there is doubt in Doomsday’s mind, so he can’t hurt Superman anymore.” I’m like….huh? How does that work?
Plus the dialouge of the Joker in that story is pathetic.
Starts off: “This is so simple a five year old kid could figure it out, someone get me a five year old kid, I can’t make heads or tails of this.”
Grouncho Marx, good line, then he follows it up with this,
“On second thought, someone just bring me a five year old kid so I can kill him.”
(facepalms) like we need the Joker to explictly state that he would kill a child. I mean, He just broke into a high security facility to release possibly the DEADLIEST CREATURE IN EXISTENCE…but he better let us know he’s evil by stating off handedly that he likes to kill kids. Lazy writing.

Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
Comic characters that are dead and have been dead for a while, and won’t come back.
Jean Grey
Ben Reilly (Spider-man clone/Scarlet Spider)
Gwen Stacy
Uncle Ben
Peter Parker’s parents.
…Wow, Peter Parker sure got the short end of the stick.
I wish for the Spiderman movies they would have gone with the comic version and had Peter in love with Gwen Stacy then let the Green Goblin kill her off (kinda), then have Peter fall in love with MJ after the death.
"Stop exploding you cowards!!!"
Well with the reboot
they could go that route. The problem is your average schmoe doesn’t know jack about Gwen, but most people seem to know MJ.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
The reboot is based on the ultimate Spider-man comics, where Mary Jane takes on the role of childhood friend, and first love.
It’ll be very similar to the first movie, with the only difference is that Gwen Stacy is a hipster.
Ultimate Spider-Man?
So, I take it there’s no plans to eventually incorporate Spiderman into the Averngers verse?

The Dodgers wanted to avoid speaking for Lee because their assessment of his mental makeup is that he is strong-willed and independent enough to take offense to it. Lee is a good student and his parents want him to go to college. But sources said they will be open-minded when the Dodgers make their pitch.

Still care about them this season but at least have emotionally moved on so I don’t get too depressed.
About the draft question, if they sign 2 of the 3 I’ll be happy. I think it would be stunning if they end up signing Lee so getting the other two guys would be nice.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
From the Dodger game notes
On this day in 1988, Dodger General Manager Fred Claire swung a deal for Cardinals’ left-hander John Tudor in exchange for slugger Pedro Guerrero. Tudor would go 4-3 with a 2.41 ERA in nine starts down the stretch, helping lead the Dodgers to the NL West crown. In the playoffs, the veteran southpaw started Game 4 of the NLCS at New York and Game 3 of the World Series at Oakland
I hated to see Pedro go, but it’s hard to quibble with trading for the NL ERA leader (at the time of the deal).
I hated Tudor
but I don’t remember why. I think it was the way he pitched.

Right now, I’d liken Tebow’s motion more to the swing of Charles Barkley — he’s going to have to work around his own flawed mechanics to get the game right. That’s Tebow’s fate in the short term. While I have no doubt whatsoever that Tebow will do everything possible to sharpen those mechanics, I think we’re looking at a multi-year project here.
NEW YORK — Indiana Pacers draft pick Lance Stephenson, after pushing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, grabbed her and hit her head on the bottom step, prosecutors said Monday.
A criminal complaint provided Monday by the Brooklyn district attorney’s office said that as Williams lay at the bottom of the stairs, Stephenson picked up her head and slammed it on the bottom step.
When police arrived, Stephenson told them the woman had fallen down the stairs, prosecutors said. The complaint said Williams suffered head and back wounds, and possible damage to her neck.
