MiLB Dodger Recap 8/18/10 - Teen Spirit Garcia Explodes while Martin continues to implode

AAA – Isotopes lost 4 - 3 but Ely pitched a solid game going eight innings. This was the second good game in a row for Ely. Cory Wade finished up with a perfect 9th inning. DeJesus had two hits but the offense has been quiet for a while now.

AA – Lookouts blasted their way to a 10 - 7 victory with Jerry Sands leading the way. Sands rediscovered his home run stroke, sending two shots over the fence, including a three run bomb. Will Savage was rocked in the starting role but 20 year old Javier Solano saved the day with two innings of shut out relief (4 K's) to pick up the win.

High A Ethan Martin started the game and recorded one out.

  • Daniel Robertson doubles (20) on a fly ball to right fielder Scott Van Slyke.
  • Cole Figueroa walks.
  • Vincent Belnome walks. Daniel Robertson to 3rd. Cole Figueroa to 2nd.
  • Jaff Decker hits a grand slam (17) to right field. Daniel Robertson scores. Cole Figueroa scores. Vincent Belnome scores.
  • Cody Decker strikes out swinging.
  • Allan Dykstra walks.
  • Jesus Lopez walks. Allan Dykstra to 2nd.
  • Jhonaldo Pozo singles on a ground ball to right fielder Scott Van Slyke. Allan Dykstra to 3rd. Jesus Lopez to 2nd.

The 66ers went on to lose 12 - 2.  Maybe Logan White made the wrong call on moving Martin from a power hitting 3rd baseman to a shitty pitcher. Or maybe he would have sucked at both aspects of the game. What we do know, is that hitters are having no problem knocking the crap out of his 1st round stuff.  I'm sure I'll be accused of exaggerating his ineptitude, so you decide. Since July 10th, he's pitched 27 innings, given up 33 runs on 43 hits, and 35 walks. Along with eight home runs. But you say it is the California League, you are expecting to much. And I reply so why was the opposing pitcher able to hold us to two runs if the league is the problem and not Martin? You reply, because our lineup is total crap. And I reply, yeah but.......

A – Webster took the mound and gave another mediocre performance going five innings, giving up seven hits and three runs. His control was good with nary a walk compared to four strike outs. Nick Gaudi fresh up from Ogden hurled three spotless innings but the Loons still fell 4 - 2.

Rookie Ogden – One day after hitting a three run walk off home run, 18 year old Jonathan Garcia upped the ante by slugging two solo home runs, leading the Raptors to a 14 - 4 victory. Coyle, Lemmerman, and Dean all had three hits, while Nick Akins slugged his 10th home run. Ozoria garned the victory but was not particularly effective giving up four runs in 5 2/3 innings.

martin

he has sucked yes. but beating him down when he’s at his lowest isn’t going to really help anything.

this year can go in the shitter for him. If he can rebound next year and salvage his prospect status, his 2010 year could actually be a plus for him; since it was basically the first time in his life he has experienced this amount of total failure. He’s been one of the best baseball players on the diamond his whole life, to experience something like this, and actually rebound from it will only enhance his mental make up.

Although all of this is based on the premise that he rebounds. Obviously with prospects, you win some, you lose some. I think Martin was a great gamble when we picked him because he still has a huge arm. Obviously it’s taken him a while longer then expected to harness that arm.

I knew someone would say something like

“beating him down”

I just report the stats. With a little comment.

He was pretty good before this year

But I would be all for seeing what he’s got left as a third baseman again.

Webster took the mound and gave another mediocre performance going five innings

for all his mediocre performances, he still has a ERA under 3 and has increased his gb ratios considerbly.

by npurcell on Aug 19, 2010 8:26 AM PDT reply actions

+1

at the halfway point of this season, his GB percentqge was at or under 40%….. he was extreme flyball… idk what he did mid season to change into the GB machine he is

by matthewmafa on Aug 19, 2010 9:13 AM PDT up reply actions

I was thinking with no walks and 4 K’s, the low A defense probably has something to do with giving up 3 runs….

by Michael White on Aug 19, 2010 8:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Ya, we have no way of knowing if 7 hits were solid or bloopers/etc that a better fielder would have had. That being said, I’m not sure there is a better way to do this without actually having someone at the games.

Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.

matt

was following the game yesterday. he mentioned a ton of infield hits.

by npurcell on Aug 19, 2010 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions

yes

he gave up 2 bunt singles (actually back to back batters)

and 1 swinging bunt infield single….

he was pretty dominant yesterday….

by matthewmafa on Aug 19, 2010 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, it seems like people are down on him, but he's really having one of the better pitching years for our prospects

Though I’m not sure that says much of anything.

How so?

His stats are top 3 for any Dodger prospect pitcher this year, Rubby’s aren’t out of this world.

Ogden Raptors

Many will be an exciting bunch to keep track of next season. I wonder if some combo of the current Loons and Raptors could be our next Chattanooga (Jacksonville) 5 team in 2012.

by BFDC on Aug 19, 2010 8:56 AM PDT reply actions

eh

i’ve seen it too many time when we have 3 year college players destroying the pioneer league to only stagnate when they hit full season play.

by npurcell on Aug 19, 2010 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Yea you are right. For some reason I am more optimistic about Landry and Lemmerman, but its probably just because I don’t have anything else in baseball to be optimistic about.

by BFDC on Aug 19, 2010 9:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Landry is young

enough I think the optimism is warranted.

So what I gather from Nate he is not impressed with Garcia because he’s 18 and not doing any better then DeWitt did at 18, and he’s not impressed with the College guys. But he is willing to give Martin a pass while being possibly the worst pitcher in the Cal League over the last 30 days.

by meercatjohn on Aug 19, 2010 9:17 AM PDT up reply actions

im not giving martin a pass at all.

he has sucked, no question. and that will reflect my rankings of him this year. But i still like his potential and if he can get it together, i think a lot of it will be attributed to his struggles in 2010.

I don’t get too excited with short season ball unless they do spectacular and out of the norm (example: kershaw’s GCL numbers). I was a big supporter of Landry when we drafted him and still like him. His numbers so far are what I expected of him. If he can take it to the next step next year (keep the power, raise the bbs) then i’ll like him even more.

by npurcell on Aug 19, 2010 9:41 AM PDT up reply actions

I actually agree with you about Odgen

but I thought your comparison of Garcia / DeWitt was interesting. For one thing Garcia is hitting as an 18 year in Odgen like a number one pick ( DeWitt). Given where he was drafted that is worth getting excited about. Sure the rest of the roster other then Landry will probably all hit a wall next year just like Ruggiano did this year. Still I’d rather see them hit then not hit though Blake Smith has shown, 1/2 season ball don’t mean shit.

by meercatjohn on Aug 19, 2010 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions

There was a list of players in yesterday's minor league thread

and the only 18 year old in that league who did better was Travis Denker, and Garcia was at least better than every other player listed.

Should the Dodgers call up Ely when rosters expand? Long reliever, spot starter type?

by Michael White on Aug 19, 2010 9:46 AM PDT reply actions

Sure

if it was me

1. I’d move Kuroda, Lilly, and Padilla on waivers for whatever
2. Start Ely, McDonald, and Elbert or whatever flotsam Ned picks up for them.
3. I’d bring up DeJesus to play 2nd
4. I’d bring up Mitchell to play 1st and 3rd
5. I’d bring up Paul to play LF
6. I’d bring up Trayvon to play CF
7. I’d bring up Sands to play 1st / RF

I’d play it like we are the Royals because right now, we are.

Co-sign, but I don’t think step 1 is going to happen.

Not as though I'm complaining

But what do you do with Kemp, Blake, and Loney? Just bench em? If so, for Loney and Kemp, do you trade them after the season, because if you bench them, they don’t have much of a future here after that.

"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"

by Ivdown on Aug 19, 2010 10:16 AM PDT up reply actions

The idea

is not for any of them to replace the players but to find out what they can do against major league pitching. Seems to me a rational person would realize that Loney and Andre need platoon partners. Can Sands / Mitchell be that guy? I doubt it, but what would it hurt to give them at bats against left handed pitching?

Can Trayvon play center field? I’d like to find out. What does DeJesus offer on the defensive side of 2nd base? I’d like to find out. Can Mitchell actually play 3rd base? This gives the major league staff the ability to see what they can do. It also lets the hollow core know that no one is happy with their production.

by meercatjohn on Aug 19, 2010 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I believe Table was screaming for Platoon partners for Loney and Ethier 2 weeks ago, haha

You make valid and good points, but what do you do with Kemp in this scenerio? 4th outfielder? Platoon in RF with Ethier? Lol, it’s funny but if we want to give at bats to Sands in LF and Trayvon in CF, it’s not a bad idea.

Then get one of Mitchell or Lindsey to platoon with Loney and you’ve got yourself a makeshift team, lol.

I'm on board

Let’s start Zach Lee while we’re at it. Show him that he has to EARN that $5 mil.

so

bench kemp/loney/ethier????

its not as easy as it seems

by matthewmafa on Aug 19, 2010 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Of course it won’t happen. Not one of them will happen.

by meercatjohn on Aug 19, 2010 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Trayvon in CF may happen. Benching Kemp doesn’t seem all that unlikely.

Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.

by G.Scott on Aug 19, 2010 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Unfortunately benching the most talented batter on the team doesn’t seem that unlikely…. :/

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Aug 19, 2010 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

exactly what I was inferring. They don’t seem to have a problem benching him, at least with Trayvon playing they could sell it as a glimpse to the future.

Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.

by G.Scott on Aug 19, 2010 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

yea, I was agreeing with you

Id like to see what Trayvon could do in RF. Kemp has proven he can handle CF in the majors. If Trayvon has the arm for RF, that could be an amazingly gifted defensive OF

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Aug 19, 2010 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t plan on paying to see anymore Dodger games this year, but if our lineup included Ely starting and a lineup of Furcal SS, Trayvon CF, Ethier RF, Sands 1B, Mitchell 3B, Paul LF, DeJesus 2B, Ellis C, Ely P, I’d pay to watch that. In fact I’d probably pay for next to dugout baseline tickets to try to get some pregame autographs. The game would suck but on the bright side we couldn’t score any fewer runs.

Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.

by G.Scott on Aug 19, 2010 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Id see no way that they'd start Paul over Kemp

I know they’d go with the ‘looking at the future’ line, but no one would buy it, IMO. Had Paul lighted the majors up before, maybe. But with a 591 OPS, there is no way they could honestly say that

Kemp will just be getting his scheduled day off everyday until November.
