as happy as I am the guys are pitching well
I just reminds me of that Drysdale story of the hotel clerk telling him that Koufax had pitched a shutout and Don asking, “Did he win?”
something like that anyway.

Yeah it's been bumming me out, at least in empathy for them
that they’ve pitched so incredibly well for at least a month with nothing to show for it. The offense has been so pathetic that it’s been wasted. At the very least, I hope the media acknowledges that starting pitching has been great and was not the culprit in their mediocrity this season. (Esp since for a long while that was the point hammered home ad nauseum by “experts.” To be fair, of course, adding Ted Lilly has helped a great deal as well but the top 4 guys were all quite good during this run.)
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
1) Once the national media realizes the Dodgers pitching has been great, Ted Lilly will get all the credit.
2) It won’t matter if the national media notices the Dodgers pitching has been great because 60% of them are free agents and all we’ll hear about is how we have to replace them with aces.

Probably true
though I’m not quite as cynical as you when it comes to the Lilly point. I wouldn’t mind having him back as a #4 next year though. They are going to obviously need to sign one more top flight starter to join Bills and Kershaw, too. But I guess I just feel empathy for the starters and would be nice to see them credited is all.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
Sutcliffe mentioned the fact that Kuroda, Padilla, and Lilly are FAs at the end of the season and said that of those 3, Lilly is the one the Doders will want back the most. I think given the choice, Kuroda is the one you want back.
Not going to matter who is pitching
if this team fields this lineup next year. Only a fool would think Rafy can come back after a winters rest and not once again have back problems when he has to play the game on a daily basis.
Yeah I'm more worried about the offense too
but they have concerns in the off season on both sides of the ball frankly. Still, some intriguing names out there in free agency and we have no idea who will be added so I will reserve judgment before panicking :-)
And of course maybe a little help is on the way from the minors though probably not enough for 2011.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
Agreed. I am kinda looking at 2011 as a buffer season. Would be nice to dump some veterans and get some prospects, maybe ink Kershaw, Bills, and Kemp and then hope that Sands or some of the other prospects can contribute in 2012.
Kemp is the last guy you should expect to get another multi-year contract. I wouldn’t be surprised if Colletti still blames Kemp’s financial security on his crappy play.

Kemp's BABIP is dipping every year
Line drive rate dropping and infield hits dropping. His stolen base percentage is awful and his range ratings in the outfield have dipped this year. One has to wonder if he has lost a step or if this is just noise, or some combo of the two.
2008 to 2009 doesn't mean he's trending

expected Batting average in balls in play.
http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/fantasy/article/simple-xbabip-calculator/
no
his babip is falling because he continues to hit flyballs
flyballs are caught for outs more frequently unless they leave the park
the upside is that he hits home runs
the downside is that he gets less hits
the problem is that his ld% has cratered unlike last year when he was still hitting more line drives, hence his ba has cratered along with his ld% even though the home run pop is still ther ebeacuse he’s hitting flyballs
by Chad Moriyama on Aug 19, 2010 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions
as far as infield hits go
they fluctuate with kemp every other year, likely because infield hits are a product of luck
considering the sample size and how few you hit, four or five balls that used to go to deep short or now going to third baseman and now your ifh% drops from 17.4 to 6.3 to 12.5 to 5.9 etc

Matt Kemp leads the team in home runs.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 19, 2010 11:59 AM PDT up reply actions
Yes
he has 19 on Aug 19th. He hit 26 last year, just wondering if the upside to the flyballs is more home runs, why it would appear he’s on the same path as last year.
However I see Kensai tried to answer that below.
Plus his doubles have been dropping from 38 to 25 to 21 but with with a least 100 more at bats to get those home runs and doubles back upto to 2009 production.
This team can’ t win if Loney / Kemp are 750 – 780 OPS hitters.

on flyballs
It’s a fair point to say his average sucks because he’s not hitting as many line drives though.
he’s on pace to have 15 less line drives. line drives are hits like 80 percent of the time or whatever, so that’s a good number if you add like 12 hits to his line right now
by Chad Moriyama on Aug 19, 2010 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions
for example
he hits 15 more linedrives up to this poijnt and his batting average is .282 and nobody cares

i might do one in the offseason
he had the right idea by adjusting to hit more flyballs last year, and we saw why with more homers
it seems that’s the problem right now though

Yeah, I don’t expect it, just that it would be nice. In reality, I just hope they don’t trade him. I would however be open to trading Blake, Loney, or Broxton to get some other pieces back.
Cardinals probably want us to pay for next year’s salary and got get anything back for a 38 year old shoulda-been-benched-last-year guy
Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.
I'm sure they do want those things
but they’re desperate. They are looking at Geoff Blum.
If Blake, Loney, Broxton, or Kemp were traded this offseason, they would be traded at their lowest value.
Andre Ethier is the man to trade, unless you think he will be a key part of the next great Dodger team. From my POV, he will be expensive by then, and an expensive Ethier is replaceable.
The Omar Moreno of this blog
by Humma Kavula on Aug 19, 2010 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions
As with Andre, I feel like his perceived value and his actual value do not match up. I have to think that around baseball he is still considered a top 3 reliever and would fetch a sum in accordance with that.
Given the choice and the clear lack of a starting rotation for next year, I would sign Kershaw and Billingsley both until they’re 36, ditto for Kemp. I would then trade Furcal, Ethier, Loney and Broxton (not because he sucks, because closers are naturally overvalued) and build for 2012.
Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.
I mean it’s risky, but it would probably somewhere around 140/14, which would look outrageously team friendly if he just stays healthy and is good to pretty good for most of those years.
Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.
I wonder if Kershaw would take that deal
I would say probably not, since he can make that kind of money for half the years if he makes it to free agency.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
that’s a whole lot of money for a 22 year old to turn down. Especially with how frequent arm injuries are thee days, it’ll probably turn into a 140/12 year deal with him getting paid to rehab a couple years.
Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.
There’s almost nothing good that could come from this.

We could simply trade Loney

I think at the time of his signing, we knew this was coming. I just don’t like the fact that we have nothing in the system to move him to a super-utility role next season.
At the time
it seemed obvious that by 2011 DeWitt or Bell would be the starting 3rd baseman and Blake would be a great utility guy. I really don’t understand Ned trading his backup plans for his old 3rd baseman. He needs to take that tunnel vision off that he uses on July 31st.

I agree we are not in the Beltre sweepstakes, just saying I dont’ think the Sox are a shoo – in to sign him. He chucked his bat against the ground
The ump would obviously think it was because he didn’t like strike 2 call.

So what?
He didn’t throw it at the ump he threw it in the other direction and never looked at him.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
It doesn't matter
He shouldn’t be throwing his shit on the field like that. How many times do you think players get a strike called on them that they don’t like, but they don’t say anything to the ump, but still shit talk him walking back to the dugout and etc…
You shouldn’t throw your shit on the field, that’s bad sportsmanship and a bad example, quite frankly.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
Its also not ejection worthy
unless the ump is assuming he is arguing the strike call which he wasn’t. You want to change the rules/guidelines thats one thing, but the ump had no business throwing him out of the game for showing a bit of emotion.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
How can you know that? Of course it's a judgement call
But if you told someone at work something they didn’t like, then they got pissed off right after, you’d have to assume they were pissed at you, right?
Also, I’ve got no problem with showing emotion. He can scream, he can curse, whatever, I just have a problem with him throwing his bat down the way he did, the same I would if he chucked his helmet as well. At least wait until youre in the dugout and take it out on the water cooler, Ethier style.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
I can know he wasn't arguing
cause he didn’t say a word before the guy ejected him. You can argue he was pissed and disagree with me, but I think he was more angry with himself.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
Zimmerman mouthed “that’s bullshit” before he realized he was ejected (he hadn’t turned around yet).

Why, the strike call (which was legit) or the quick trigger finger?
He threw his bat down right by the plate, I’d have done the same thing likely.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
I think a warning would be sufficient, but Zimmermann did yell “Fucking Bullshit” after he threw the bat down, and I doubt that was referring to his swing. Plus his slow walk back on the strike 2 is what setup the trigger finger.

Is he supposed to jog back all 3 feet?
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
Come on nolander, you can’t tell me that the way he responded after the second strike call was not a slight to the umpire. Of course he is not supposed to jog back, but the entire reaction on his part is filled with body language directed at the empire.
by robotmadeofnails on Aug 19, 2010 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions
So umpires should throw players out because they feel slighted?
I just don’t think its a good thing for an umpire to take a player out of a game because his feelings may or may not have been hurt.

I still don't know what you expected him to do there.
Players take their time getting into the batters box, whether they are trying to show up the ump or not.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
I just think we are disagreeing here. I think the body language and walk is way different then a normal walk back to the box. You combine that with the bat toss and I can see (not agree with) why the ump tossed him.

Does anyone remember watching video
of the 1976 NBA Finals? Game 5, thought to be the greatest NBA game ever by many (triple OT, Gar Heard turnaround, 1970s hair, crappy shoes, etc).
Anyway, I believe it was when Paul Westphal intentionally called a timeout. PHX didn’t have any timeouts, but under the rules of the time they could advance the ball after a technical foul shot by the other team. Boston was up 1, and got to shoot a free throw to put them up 2 (right before the Gar Heard turnaround).
Anyway, as JoJo White was shooting the FT, I swear I thought he put his hand up early in celebration, before the ball went in. Not quite Larry Bird in the 1988 3-point contest, but it reminded me of Huston Street there for some reason.

But saying certain words and not even saying them in a derogatory way about people that are usually associated with the word? I don’t see a problem there.

Retard and F*g and N********** are not really debatable. They are offensive to a lot of people. With retard we are so desensitized to it most people probably don’t realize it.

Calm down; he's not being a douche.
Let’s take an example: the word “fag.”
I think we can all agree that it’s offensive to call gay men by that word.
But it’s also offensive to call straight men that word. It’s always used, even playfully, as a put-down. And why is it a put-down? Because you’re calling the straight guy a name that, presumably, he doesn’t want to be. After all, there’s nothing worse than one dude sleeping with another dude, right? Um.
That’s why the word is offensive, no matter the context, and we should try not to use it.

This is a different matter I think. I already had this conversation before, and don’t want to get into it again.
But after the initial conversation, Phil blasted everyone, explicitly used the term retard and called several people ‘intellectually disabled.’
The problem is that you’re never going to get consensus on this term, and well, frankly why should I stop using the term just to make you feel better?
I actually tried to avoid using the term on this board just because I didn’t want to start another argument but frankly. The damn term fits for a lot of situations.

I don’t use racist/offensive terms ever, but I do appreciate the first amendment. While I think bringing up the 1st Amendment as a defense for why you called someone a name is pretty simplistic and is not at all using it how it was intended, it’s also still a right granted to every individual. Be respectful to others by not degrading them, but also be respectful to the people who choose to use such words, call them a douchebag for doing it, and move on.

I find many things here offensive
but we have tried to stay away from censorship other then making sure that no one on this site gets involved in name calling each other.
If someone here on the board has a mentally challenged child or works in the mentally challenged world and has a problem with someone on this board calling Frank a “retard” I simply don’t have much sympathy for that. Once we start trying to police that policy then the whole free basing comment structure could be under attack given how offensive any and all of you can be to any and all of us at any time.
I really hate the “punch a baby” or “punch a kitten” lines but I’ll be the last person to ask those who use that stuff to stop.
So while I agree with Reg who says “you don’t get to decide what is and isn’t offensive to people” my reply would be, sure but for those offended they have two choices, ignore it or get over it. Or they could use the third choice.

I’d trade Kemp if the return was a starting pitcher, a center fielder, and a 2nd baseman.
So if I could get
Dan Uggla, Cameron Maybin, and Nolasco, yes I would trade him.
Sean Rodriguez, Desmond Jenning, Wade Davis, and Jacob McGee, yes I would trade him
Otherwise he’s our right fielder. I don’t know if Kemp is “uncoachable” but I do believe he does not put forth his best effort to maximize his skills. If Kemp is our right fielder and has another year like this, this team is going nowhere. He has to be the best hitter on the team because we aren’t going to have any more Manny’s falling into our lap. All of my optimism was fueled by the core getting better every year. With some regressing, some staying the same, and some falling off the planet, it is hard to have any optimism because we don’t seem to have the funds to bring the external hitters this team will need to compete at the level we expect them to.
Colletti sells low on everyone. No way we’d get much for Kemp.

by matthewmafa on Aug 19, 2010 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions
That is fine, I would trade Kemp for a good starting pitcher and a center fielder to replace him.
For instance, I would have traded him for Cliff Lee and Franklin Gutierrez earlier in the year.
But that deal both you and I mention probably does not exist, or if it does it is with minor league players which Ned Colletti probably does not want because his past actions shows he prefers veterans to fill holes and only goes with youth when pressed.
If Matt Kemp is uncoachable, then everyone else on the team is apprently so too. Because Andre Ethier’s defense has cratered, Casey Blake has turned to replacement level, Russell Martin declined to the point where its possible he might be non-tendered, James Loney can’t progress to a decent player. (And Loney has loads of talent, he’s not playing to the potential people set out for him.) GA was always allowed to jog to 1st base no matter if it was a close out, a DP, or a hit.
Ryan Theriot, Dotel, and Scotty Pods makes bad plays but they are waved off because they give max effort. Even when they don’t give max effort. How many times will Pods outrun a ball, wait a second to turn, and then jog to get the ball back and then lazily throw it back into the infield?
This team preaches consistency, but their coaching style isn’t consistent with each player, and that is fine.
If the coaching staff thinks Matt Kemp needs a kick in the ass once in a while, fine. Kick his ass, but it doesn’t seem to be working anymore, so find something new for him.
Other players such as Blake or Loney also apprently need that kick in the ass, and haven’t been called out or received it yet.
What is so frustrating about the Matt Kemp situation is that he is one of the only healthy players this season and the team will intentionally bench him to prove a point.
If they really wanted to prove a point with him, they should send him to AAA and be done with it.
I know the last line was an exaggeration, but Kemp can’t be optioned without clearing waivers first, since it has been more than 3 years since he was last optioned.

You’re not going to get much from a team in August anyway since any good prospects will just be blocked as well. Do what you can.
I’d take the picks, but as we seen last year, you can’t bet on the picks being there.
The prospect issue can be managed around via PTBNL.

Percy Harvin
This kid has serious medical issues.
Percy Harvin collapsed during Thursday’s practice and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
Coach Brad Childress said that Harvin had an “episode” and not really a “seizure.” It was apparently triggered when Harvin looked at the sky on a punt return and is almost certainly related to his migraine woes. Harvin was trembling and partially responsive as medical personnel got him off the field. This is scary stuff as the Vikings held a team prayer afterward.
Migraines can be crippling
and awful, though I feel like he should talk to Terrell Davis, who also suffered from migraines and found some medicine which helped immensely. He was stricken by a migraine during the super bowl but was able to come back and play 2nd half due to this medication. Anyway I bet he’d have some advice for Harvin.

Just Octavio being Octavio
Ned Coletti and Joe Torre are living in a world where James McDonald (20 K, 4 BB, 0 HR in 17.2 IP with Pittsburgh) and Andrew Lambo are an acceptable price to add a middling reliever to a team six games out of the playoffs and then turn him into the relief ace over two superior pitchers. The Dodgers are now 12 games out of the NL West lead and 8 games out of the Wild Card. I don’t know what the Dodgers’ endgame was with Octavio Dotel, but there’s no doubt that Coletti and the Los Angeles front office missed big on this one.

Still, it’s true, of the 3 trades Colletti made, this is the one I seriously regret. I know the pen needed help but this was just way too much. the other trades (except for the BDW for Theriot swap) I didn’t mind as much, useful players in exchange for prospects I wasn’t that high on. But that trade is going to be, already is, dumb.

Stark on Torre
One friend of Torre predicts he’ll retire and go on living in Southern California because his family loves the L.A. lifestyle. But two other baseball men we surveyed weren’t so sure of that. They both expect him to manage again — but not the Cubs. And they think it will be in New York — but not the Yankees.
“Personally,” said one baseball man who has known Torre for decades, “I think he’ll be the Mets’ manager. New York is the place if he’s going to work anywhere after this year. And he’d be perfect for the Mets because he’d be their way to sweep everything under the rug.”
by Tommy Blackjack on Aug 19, 2010 12:18 PM PDT reply actions
As Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports points out on Twitter, Scott Podsednik has now reached 525 plate appearances for 2010, so he will have the power to void his 2011 option. The Dodgers have a $2MM option for next season with a $100K buyout.
The problem isn’t just voiding it, its that the Dodgers won’t let him get away.
Ned Colletti likes him too much not to offer a deal.
Well if its that true
Then Ned is technically insane and should be hospitalized.
Pods = Pierre.
Doing the same thing over and expecting different results = insanity.
Pods for $2mil in LF, wait til you see what we get at C and 3B.
2011 is a bridge year and I think even Ned can see that.
I would be sick with a multi-year average 30+yr old LH 3b…
How’s about a Loney-Brett Wallace trade?
Ned has never taken on a multi year project, he always plans for the short term. 2008 was supposed to be a bridge year and he decided to bring in Andruw Jones, Manny and Blake.
2006 was a bridge year, and he went veteran FA crazy.
He’ll spend again for 2011.
Torre’s first year, new coaching staff, the younger players first season starting, guys like Kent, Nomar being phased out, Billingsley finally starting in a full season, Kershaw being brought up. Expectations being somewhat low. Blake DeWitt starting at 3rd base despite having little experience at AA, much less in the majors.
The Dodgers that year were trying to start 4 position players in Kemp, DeWitt, Loney, and Ethier.
Martin was the only established position player among the younger players.
That doesn't make it a bridge year
They didn’t bring in Torre to say, “well, I hope in a year or two, we can compete.”
They also signed Kuroda and went into the season with a staff of Lowe-Penny-Bills-Kuroda as the front four. They expected to win, and thanks to Manny and a weak division, they did.

Also
by the start of 2008, Ethier was no newbie, having made 216 starts in the previous two seasons.
And Loney once he came up in June 2007 was there to stay. He started 82 of the final 90 games, and was coming off a still-career high 15 HR with a 9-HR September. Combine that with the fact that Loney and Kemp both hit .330+ in essentially half years I would say expectations were quite high heading into 2008.

I got a chuckle out of this one.
Jon W. I disagree with you in an almost violent manner. Kemp was projected as the stud of the team. We’ve been told that numerous times over the years not only by you and your other blog but by Dodgers players, coaches, management, national publications and so on. An 11 million dollar contract over 2 years raises expectations too.
Is this fair to Kemp? No, it is not. However, when you make the same mistakes over and over and over and over (down and away slider anyone?), when your attitude projects an air of indifference, when you exhibit the signs of a person with a marijuana habit, when you take a day from the team (with the managers blessing) and go to New York with your superstar girlfriend, questions are asked. Dedication is queried. Commitment is expected.
Kemp has not shown any of these qualities. We hear how Manny Ramirez has a phenomenal work ethic, how Martin plays hurt, how Furcal has given his back to the game, Eithier his pinkie… and crickets about Kemp work habits.
Is Kemp shouldering the blame for a season that is now all but officially over? Yes. He has to. Part of being a leader is leading and admitting when you are wrong. I’ve heard nothing of substance from him to indicate he is even remotely aware of his place on this team and that is just wrong.
Is he a drug user? I highly doubt it but his attitude is such that it is infuriating to watch. He’s been in the league for what? almost 4 years now? No longer a baby, he is starting to reach that veteran age and he needs to start producing. 6 weeks left in the season and there is still time to pull this out. It’s just going to take an absolutely amazing turn around, starting with the Bison.
Posted by: GErdrich | 08/19/2010 at 11:25 AM
Is he a drug user indeed.

did he not read Kemp saying, “If I had just had one better month, it would have made a big difference.”

postgame interviews are a complete waste of time, at least with players. I usually only stick around for Torre’s stuff, because he may have some actual news, like “so and so likely won’t pitch tomorrow” or some roster move or something.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 19, 2010 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions
mostly I just assume they a) can see the questions coming from a mile away, and b) are sick of answering the same questions. I’m only impressed when an interviewer catches the player off guard by asking something intelligent but not common. Also, I feel like players give passe answers because most of the time (I’m looking at you Ken Rosenthal) the interviewer is talking about something (playing baseball) he has never done before and therefore has no idea how hard it actually is.
Just my ten cents.

The best time to get anything from players is before the game, when there is more time and you can have actual one-on-one conversation with them. You are right about asking the right questions, but for the most part the beat guys have a job to do, and they have to get those quotes, and the players know it.
For the most part, both parties know the score going in, and agree to do the dance back and forth.

I read all this weeks ago – Molly Knight, and DodgerDivorce.com. Odd that it’s suddenly news now. I guess because Jamie’s lawyer decided to make it public and official. Presumably trying to show they have a case so as to negotiate for a better position if/when they’re going to settle just before the court case. It makes no difference what the lawyers say now if they really do go to court.
Since what Jamie is asserting would result in Frank being arrested for criminal prosecution if it were true, his lawyer should probably threaten to sue Jamie for slander and libel, just to raise to stakes back again. I don’t think it makes Jamie liable for anything criminal unless she personally repeated it in court knowing it to be false. I don’t think you could prove she knows it to be false.

As the Dodgers’ season closes in on a playoff-free ending, it’s not Manny Ramirez’s situation that bears watching. Once the mathematics of elimination are settled, it wouldn’t be surprising to see things boil over there. Kemp could end up shut down for the fanalytically-critical final few weeks.
That seems like hooey to me, but I’d thought I’d post it.
fanalytically is one of the greatest words ever

Yeah, that's not gonna happen
I don’t see Kemp anywhere near Jose Guillen 2004 levels, not even close.

Dodgers Lineup
Podsednik LF
Theriot 2B
Kemp CF
Loney 1B
Blake 3B
Johnson RF
Carroll SS
Ausmus C
Lilly P
We only hit Kemp 3rd to show we actually sorta do like him and please don’t bring up Larry Bowa again.
Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.
I think it’s to show that everybody gets a day off, even Ethier, and also that when you need a hitter in the 3-spot, and neither Manny nor Ethier is available, you give Kemp a chance to show he can do it and put some pressure in him for once. If he does not rise to the occasion and just strikes out every PA, he’ll go back down to 6 tomorrow. What will be interesting is what they do if he comes through with at least one XBH and another hit (single) and maybe a walk. Does he get put up to 4 or 5 tomorrow?
I seriously do not know what to make of the coaching staff.
In a season where everyone admits that Kemp has sucked, they finally start to bat him 3rd? I know Ethier’s out but this is just way to fucking confusing.
Ethier will be back tomorrow and Kemp, if he plays, will hit 6th because you know, You don’t want to move Loney and Blake out of their comfort spots at 4 and 5 too much.

Right
They have pretty much settled on this lineup for the past 10-11 games or so, with any fill-ins in the same spot. Kemp just takes Ethier’s spot today.

I hate bullfighting
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
Rodeos suck
I’d find more enjoyment out of going to a NASCAR event I’m sure.
