8/19/10 Minor League Report – Fools Gould?
AAA – The Isotopes lost 11 to 5 behind Seth Etherton’s worst performance in a long time. He allowed 7 runs in 4 innings, and then Josh Lindblom came in and allowed another run in relief. Jon Link continued the trend by giving up a 3 run homer in the 7th. On offense, John Lindsay hit a 3 run homer and Russell Mitchell went 3 for 4. Jamie Hoffmann also contributed by going 2 for 4 with an RBI.
AA – Rubby De La Rosa wasn’t piling up the strikeouts on Thursday night, but he still had a dominant performance in which he allowed just 3 hits over 7 innings. A walk and a homer resulted in 2 runs allowed, but that was his only blemish on the night. Now in 32 innings, Rubby has allowed just 3 earned runs and batters are hitting just .178 against him. The Lookouts were able to back their star pitcher with 3 runs, which was just enough for the win. Jaime Pedroza did most of the damage with 2 hits and 2 RBI’s, but the other hitting prospects were pretty quiet on this night.
High A – I always seem to get the games when Josh Walter pitchers, and I hate it because he so pointless. He’s a 25 year old in the California League with an ERA over 6. Walter had another mediocre performance on Thursday as the 66ers lost 6 to 4. At the plate, Manny Ramirez went 0 for 2 with 2 K’s and a walk in his 2nd rehab game. The only good news is that Pedro Baez and Alfredo Silverio both went 2 for 4, although both are still hitting in the .260’s.
A – The Loons only scratched out 3 hits in this game, but somehow it was enough as they won 1 to 0. The Great Lakes pitching was extremely good on this night, with Greg Wilborn going 7 strong innings in which he struck out 8. Steven Ames finished off the game with 2 nearly perfect innings, in which his only base runner was the result of a field error.
Rookie Ogden – Garrett Gould continued his mediocre season with 4 less than stellar innings. He allowed 4 runs, but only 2 runs were earned. This unearned run thing has become a trend all season for Gould, and for the season he has allowed 34 runs, but only 21 of those were earned. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a big discrepancy between those 2 numbers. I still think Gould will be fine as he is barely 19 years old, but I do wish he were having a better season. Getting back to the game, Carlos Frias threw in relief again and allowed 2 unearned runs in 2.1 innings while striking out 4. Nobody did much at the plate besides Nick Akins, who hit 2 doubles and is just having a ridiculously good season.
Rookie Arizona – The Arizona Dodgers lost 3 to 1 because they were only able to manage 4 hits against the Giants. Chance Gilmore went 2 for 4 with a double and triple, and Tae-Hyeok Nam had an RBI double, but that was it. Preston Mattingly continued his strong season with an 0 for 4 performance, including 3 strikeouts. Brandon Martinez was the starting pitcher and did OK, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs in 5.1 inning while striking out 5. Jimmy Marshall and Joel Lima were solid out of the bullpen.
DSL – The Dodgers split a double header with the Rays, winning the first game 6 to 1 before falling 3 to 1 in the nightcap. In terms of pitching, starter Giordanny Chavez was solid in the first game, while 17 year olds Abdiel Velasquez and Jackson Mateo shut down the opposition out the bullpen in game 2. There isn’t anything to report in terms of offense for either game.

In the majors
I would worry about total runs scored, and Gould’s is ridiculous, but seriously though, the defense on that team is horrible and he’s so unlucky as far as WHEN they make the errors. :o
Don
no way we release Don’s son when he is on the team. When Don is gone, Preston follows rather quickly, IMO

I don’t think Don’s presence in the organization has anything to do with Preston’s inclusion. Not every player in the minors will make the majors. Gotta have depth and organizational soldiers too.

I'll be one
surprised person if Preston is not released this winter. For six weeks in his debut season he looked like a decent gamble, but what a mess since then.

yes
but I dont see how the Dodgers would release Preston when the dad is still working with the team. If the dad leaves, then they can release him just as they would with any other player who has been as bad as he has been…

I don’t think they think like that. If they want to release him, they will, Don or no.

Being a former #1 pick could also play a role
But, honestly, he doesn’t he even qualify as an ‘organizational solider’ at this point. He’s in his fifth year in the organization, is going to be 23 in week and is a black hole in our AZL lineup. I think that it is safe to say that he has no future as a professional baseball player and that his opportunities should be given to someone else who may have a chance- like Tony Moses for example.
Preston was here before Don was anyway.
And I hope Donnies not a goner. Im actualy very intrigued by Donnie possibly being the skipper. Shit, I wouldnt even mind seeing him at 1b. Maybe he could get the offense going.

3.82 FIP due to lack of strikeouts. But jumping two levels and showing this type of gb dominance..i think the Ks will come as he gets more snap and tilt on his breaking pitches.
he jumped one level and some would argue that our Cal League A level is equiv to MWL
how do you get two levels?
GB rate is cool.

Stating the obvious but
Cal League ≠ MWL when it comes to pitching
