Dodgers Minor League Hitting Leaders - July

First of all, I have to apologize because I'm not able to provide the minor league stat leaders for just the month of July.  Normally I provide the stats through the recently completed month, as well the stats for just the recently completed month.  But unfortunately, I lost the previous data that would normally use to calculate the monthly stats when I turned in my work computer when I recently changed jobs.  I simply forgot to copy it over onto my new computer.  Next month, however, I'll go back to providing both sets of data.

Anyways, when you look at the Dodgers minor league hitting leaders through the month of July, a couple of things stand out.  First, Jerry Sands continues to place among the top 10 in almost every offensive category, so despite his .270 average in AA, you can rest assured that he continues to rake.  Nick Akins is another player that has enjoyed success, although you have to take his success with a grain of salt since he's played in Rookie Leagues all year, and barely qualified for the percentage categories because he had exactly 125 at bats.  Other quick notes:

- Kyle Russell continues to struggle with the strikeout, K'ing in 31.3% of plate appearances

- Brian Cavazos-Galvez, Alfredo Silverio, and Pedro Baez don't know how to take a walk

- Dee Gordon still can't field at shortstop

- Jake Lemmerman is also having a solid professional debut, however his BABIP shows that he has been getting a little bit lucky (same goes for Akins and Leon Landry)

- Russ Mitchell continues to have a breakout season

- Xavier Paul has nothing left to prove in the minor leagues

Its nice to see Sands'

K% and BB% holding steady in AA, despite the drop in BA.

Not so much lucky

as much as lower level defense is horrid. :o

I've been saying it for a while

Move Gordon to CF and let’s develop Lofton Lite.

I know there have been rumblings here about Lindsey and Mitchell...

But why hasn’t GA been waived in favor of Jay Gibbons? I know he doesn’t walk and has been linked to steroids, but he has actually had success in the major leagues in the past. I get not taking the chance on a 33-year-old career minor leaguer, but a 33-year-old with a career Major League OPS of .768 has gotta be worth a shot, right?

by Nolij on Aug 2, 2010 12:28 PM PDT reply actions

Not really

he was roider who could only do a OPS of .768. Would he be an upgrade over GA, sure, but Paul is a much bigger upgrade so why bother with Gibbons? He’s only on the roster in case the bus goes over the cliff.

He is a veteran.

Torre would have an excuse to use GA instead.

" Jake Lemmerman is also having a solid professional debut, however his BABIP shows that he has been getting a little bit lucky (same goes for Akins and Leon Landry)"

Remember that some players just hit for a high BABIP. BABIP is better used to compare a hitter/pitcher with their career marks.

Two observations about the Inland Empire roster

#1
It lacks outfielders, but It would be a hard sell to take apart the Great Lakes team which has won so many games. Curious to see who gets the playing time. Same with 2nd base where Denker is at AA but It is hard to see Ynoa getting called up.

  1. Now that Delmonico is seems to be back (he is right?), there is a glut of catchers at high A. It would seem that one of Wallach, or Delmonico aught to be called up. Maybe not though.

by Table on Aug 2, 2010 1:38 PM PDT reply actions

I guess

but if they moved Blake Smith, and Songco, they could easily be replaced with Landry and Akins.

by Phil Gurnee on Aug 2, 2010 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions

That's true

There is no immediate need, because Reed Johnson is rehabbing there. Once he is done though the outfield will be down to Ramon Jean, Alfredo Silverio, and Preston Mattingly.
