Joe pre-empt your question
by having Gibbons playing for Loney:)

Heh
I decided later Wed night that I was placated since Torre said after the game Ethier would rest against the LHP the next night.

If Dodgers trade Manny he should go to the A's
The A’s have been red hot and have a great farm system. They also still have a worse record than the White Sox and the Rays-two teams constantly linked to Manny. A’s are making a serious run and they need a bat, Manny would be perfect for them.
A’s also could afford the money since, many of their free agent targets turned them down. The key for the Dodgers is what the A’s have in return. Could we get a good prospect like Stassi, Green or Cardines? Could the Dodgers do to the A’s what Cleveland did to us?
The only thing the Dodgers will receive for Manny, if anything, is salary relief. We aren’t getting any type of prospect(s) for him.

Would not surprise me to see him moved this weekend

He needs to clear waivers first. If anything it will happen later in the week.

There is literally no reason whatsoever for the A’s to want Manny. He’s gone after this season, and they are 12.5 games out of a playoff spot.

Salary relief
Eric,
What about the idea of the Dodgers saying will give you Manny and pay part of his salary, but we want a better prospect. Remember we are only dealing with 3.5 million and there is at leas a 60% chance in my opinion that Manny stays with the Dodgers for the remainder of the season….A’s by the end of the evening should be 6 back of Texas and they have 7 games left with them including I believe 3 on the upcoming road trip
I would LOVE
to get Grant Green, but no way we get him for a month of Manny. That would be so sick though.

Well what a great night, Giants lose and Phillies lose
If only I could see Padres lose, Red Sox lose, and Yankees lose, it would be the perfect night.
Oh, and if the Dodgers could win, that’d be cool too, lol.

For Xei
I expect tomorrow’s lineup to be:
LF Pods
2B Theriot
RF Ethier
1B Loney
CF Kemp
3B Blake
SS Carroll
C Ellis
P Kershaw
Kemp and Blake could flip flop but I’m pretty sure that will be the 9
There is also the possibility of Gibbons in LF in place of Kemp (with Pods in CF) against the RHP Arroyo, but that remains to be seen. We will see just how far Torre takes his “matchups” theory.

A Dodger player who he didn’t name, went out for batting practice while Lasorda and Marge Schott sat watching, with Scott’s dog running around the field. Well the player brought a Baby Ruth bar with him, and dropped it near third. After he took some swings, he came back to the bar, picked it up, waited for Tommy and Marge to look at him, and took a big bite. Marge turned to Tommy and said “That boy is going to be verry sick”

But will other GMs see his value as down
After getting demoted for part of the season?
Perhaps, but a good September could squash that talk, I think. Plus he has a good track record.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 21, 2010 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions
True.
Part of the reason I asked about Kuo is I figure he may have a bit more value, between the contract and a bit better numbers. But he does have the arm problems in his past, and Broxton’s a “closer,” so maybe not.
Kuo could net a king's ransom
for sure, but I think they will keep him for that same reason.

I don't think he's going anywhere
I’m just curious as to what he could bring back if he did – mainly because Bell had a good game today.
Yeah, I think with his performance and contract status, he would net a shitload.
Only thing keeping the price down would be his injury history.

With our bullpen, which run counts as the insurance run?
4 runs up, 5…10??
That which is in constant motion contains all possible forms.
We all talk about Martin getting a possible DFA…but what about Loney? He’s going to make just as much if not more than Russell Martin, and there’s alot easier ways to find a 1st basemen than catcher.
Just tender and trade him. His defensive perception alone could get something of value back.
If nothing comes about keep him.
But if you tender him and cant deal him, then you are on the hook with his contract.
You’d think you’d be able to get something back for him, but teams may be scared off if he’s making 5-6 mils a year.
Eric estimates 4.5 million. Give or take, that’s just fine for 2011.
Now 7 million in 2012? That’s a different story.
I once thought Loney could be Olerud
and he still could have some great peak years. If he ramps it up to 15-17 and 110 next year, then what? Of course he’ll be a keeper then.

It's true about finding a 1b over catcher
Catchers who can hit and field are rare, and despite his disappointing numbers Martin still stacks up well against many of ‘em. That said the Dodgers already have qute a few holes to fill next year imho without creating yet another. If there’s a way to acquire a superior 1B to Loney somehow then sure, but it’s yet another challenge for a team that already will likely need a new OFer and possibly 3b or catcher in addition to 2 starting pitchers… I still think the whole team has been slumping and have maybe more faith in Loney’s future than some here.

I’m of the opinion anyone can be stuck at 1st base as long as they can rake.
If I was getting really creative, I’d try to talk Manny into coming back and platooning at 1st with Reed.
I don't think literally anyone can

Dunn, maybe Branyan, Berkman, Pena, Cantu, Huff, and Wigginton are perhaps the best options. WIth the possible exception of Dunn (depending on how you feel about his defense), they all come with risks; you can probably grab one of them at Loney’s price or cheaper, though.
