A Sigh Of Relief: Vin Scully Will Return For 2011
The Dodgers announced this morning that Vin Scully will return for 2011:
"I’m just honored and humbled to continue my association with the Dodgers, which has been a major part of my life," said Scully.
Scully’s 61 years of service constitute the longest tenure of any broadcaster in sports history. While he handles all nine innings of the team’s television broadcasts on PRIME TICKET and KCAL 9, the first three innings of each of his games are also simulcast on KABC 790 AM.
"I’m as thrilled as our fans that Vin will be returning," said Dodger Owner Frank McCourt. "He is not only the greatest broadcaster of all time, but also a wonderful friend."
Scully, like he has the past few years, will announce all home games, and NL West road games. Next year will be his 62nd season with the Dodgers.

This is one of good news with lot of historical figures are retiring after this season. Well let’s hope we get to watch / hear something like this next year which what could be the last season for him.

Classic. Ever notice that Scully knows when not to speak?

Whew!
I didnt know anything was up with Vin until I opened the paper this morning. Sent me scrambling to the computer for info. SO happy he will be back next year. Hearing Vin has been the thing keeping me going through this frustrating season.
In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened
Reds lineup correction: Hanigan catching, not Hernandez
Phillips 2B
Cairo 3B
Votto 1B
Gomes LF
Heisey RF
Hanigan C
Stubbs CF
Janish SS
Arroyo P
very cool
I just wish I lived in an area where I could hear him broadcast. You SoCal locals are very fortunate to be able to hear him call a game. On a different note, lets hope that car RamRod can bring a little more pop to the 2 spot. We can still catch the POS giants. As always the goal is to win the division, but the wildcard will do just fine. Go Dodgers!!!
The best thing about MLB.com has been finally getting to hear Vin do Dodger games. It’s been worth the money.

MLB.tv
I only have the app where I can listen to the radio broadcast, meaning Vin for only 3 innings. If i subscribe to MLB tv, will I get to hear Vin through the whole game?
Does anyone have information on Barajas?
Who is he? Prospect, veteran, neither?
Classic veteran backup catcher who doesn’t get on base very much but has some pop.

Ellis to AAA until rosters expand?
People don't think it be like this, but it do.

That’s my guess. Will find out more in a bit. Likely Barajas will join the club in Milwaukee.

Vin
I wrote this on 12/18/08 entitled “A Tribute to Vin Scully”:
I read in the sports page today that Charlie Steiner will be announcing Dodger games exclusively on radio in 2009. There was conversation in a blog on who was going to announce the 40+ games Vin Scully will not be announcing (he does not travel east of the Rockies). The more important question is who will replace Vin Scully when he decides to “turn off the microphone”?
Scully, who is 81, is irreplaceable. To this Dodger fan, when Scully leaves the game it will be like losing a father. Vin Scully takes a game and turns it into poetry. A Dodger game will never be the same. Let’s play word association:
Yankees – Ruth
Red Sox – Williams
Cardinals – Musial
Dodgers – Scully
I have had the honor of experiencing Scully-announced Dodger games for so long I don’t care to say. Put it this way – before my family got its first color television set.
I’ve always wanted to tell Vin that I admire him and he is a role model of mine.
So who replaces the legend? I don’t know but Vin’s replacement will never be able to live up to “Scully expectations”. It’s just too tough an act to follow.
I’m not certain but I believe he is the last MLB announcer to describe the games solo. I will miss the solo announcer. These “color commentators” are mostly awful. But then again I have been spoiled by having the privilege to listen to the master. I can’t believe how lucky I have been.

Vin is such a class act
whoops, here it is

That which is in constant motion contains all possible forms.
Dodgers Lineup
Podsednik LF
Theriot 2B
Ethier RF
Kemp CF
Loney 1B
Blake 3B
Carroll SS
Ellis C
Kershaw P
Ha. Kemp now in between Ethier and Loney. About time. Maybe when Torre had to explain yesterday why it was a good thing for the lefties to be broken by a righties a lightbulb came back on, or something. Maybe he forgot all about that until now. It may be a slightly overdue notice that Kemp is actually getting on base more than Loney.
Supposedly there were some scouts at last night’s game who also attended his rehab assignments. If they’re working on a deal to trade him, they might not want him to get hurt.
(Which doesn’t mean he’s not useless.)
People don't think it be like this, but it do.

Vinny
Seems silly but the biggest perk to me in working the press box once in a while is hearing Vinny singing 3 hours hours before gametime. That and finding out the man who my Grandparents adored was just as nice a human being any one could hope for.
I got one quote in the Best of Dodger Thoughts book that Jon Weisman published several years ago.
I don’t believe in God but I Thank God for Vin Scully
Still works for me today.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
That quote applies to me, too.
People don't think it be like this, but it do.

Like the Barajas pickup.
since it was just cash, nothing wrong with it. He’s certainly an upgrade on our current situation.

A friend of mine works at the Gelsons in Calabasas
and he says Scully is a frequent visitor during the weekends

Question for the board
Why do they have a radio / TV crew. Why not simply let Vin do the simulcast for 1- 3, and 7 – 9 with Steiner going solo 4 – 6? Does anyone think this current setup is better then the old Vin / Doggett or Vin/Drysdale days?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I like it
But in today’s broadcasting world, it seems like you have radio and tv guys and the two shall never meet. And having two solo broadcasters where no one else has one would probably lead some to think that McCourt is being cheap.

Fox might have restricted the rights to Vin’s voice in the TV deal?

Welcome back
you might be pleased to know that two of your most ardent protagonists (Tripon and Joey) said several times they missed your management support because it was too one sided without you.

I wonder if it's more difficult to do a simulcast than strictly TV
Not that Vin isn’t a master who can handle it. But if it requires more of him, perhaps he prefers to limit his simulcast innings. If it’s his choice, I’m all for whatever he wants to do.
If it’s the Dodgers’ choice, then you’re right.

The main difference
is that for TV, Vin will talk less unless he is doing a simulcast.
Fox only owns the rights to the broadcasts, the Dodgers pay their announcers (Scully, Monday, Steiner, Collins and Lyons). KCAL pays Karros and Miller and Prime Ticket pays their guys.
