The first year class was free
Every student in that class gets free tuition and room and board for their entire classes at UCI. Succeeding classes don’t.
Gotcha
just looked at the Wiki. No wonder there was such a buzz amongst the Poli-Sci folk at Berkeley round that time. Who wouldn’t want free tuition. That’s like the best lottery ever! Of course, you had to suffer, so sorry about that : )

I’m not really mad at them, I’m really just mad at UCI for treating the Law School as some young hotshot prospect who intermediately gets playing time while they’re phasing out the dependable veteran who has seen better days.
Now I’m going to move a trashcan, and blame it on the law school.
UCI is the younger sister
who desperately wants some of the attention her older sisters are getting, and is doing anything and everything to get it.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?

are Berkeley, UCLA, Hastings, and Davis, well, good luck

Money
and location could pull them closer to Hastings, but not likely Davis with their Sacramento connections. Berkeley and UCLA are out of reach.

I don't think thats really true
give them 20 years and a football team and we’ll see.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
A football program at UCI will never move past D-IAA, period, and 20 years time isn’t going to change the fact that UCI considers two Cal State schools their main rivals

That’s Cal, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, UCSB, UCI. Academically Irvine is already peers with Davis and Santa Barbara in undergrad education, I was just talking about the law school which launched in ‘08, seeing as how it’s the 5th law school in the UC system, comparing it to the other schools with law schools.

I’m thinking the stretch, but not the regular stretch, like Mike Mussina stretch. Or I’d shake my arm like Pedro Astacio before I let it fly.
Great call
Things to incorporate:
1) The Kevin Gross both shoulders adjust before getting in position (sort of adjusting the sleeves)
2) The Astacio arm shake
3) The Mike Fetters sudden stare
4) One of 3 windups: Fernando look to the sky, Hideo Nomo hitch and turn, or Kevin Brown full look back to 2B

Everybody is disappointed with Kemp’s year, and he’s smoking the ball compared to Ross. Ross’ best years look a lot like Kemp’s production this year. Unless Ross is playing CF, we can do better than that.
Not that it’s the best stat, but Ross by WAR the last 4 years:
2.1
3.7
1.9
1.8
Not a bad option to have, especially for one year, plus you can improve the D by moving Kemp to RF and Andre to LF. Just saying it would have been an option, not the must have or anything.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 22, 2010 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions
I assume that's fangraphs
B-Ref (Which uses Total Zone, which uses data from MLB gameday for defense)
has it:
2.4
3.4
1.2
0.5
For Ross to have value for the Dodgers, he needs to be better than Kemp on defense, and then you’re screwing up Kemp’s value because his bat becomes average to below average in RF.
Straight waiver claim. Marlins gave Ross to the Giants.

Reds-Cards brawl
Vin just reminded me of the recent brawl bt Reds & Cards. UGH – Cueto got suspended for ONLY 7 games for kicking, brawl starters only got fined, and club managers suspended for 2 games each. While Kershaw got a 5-game suspension for a no-fight plunk at the Giants, no penalties against any Giants. Unfair.
What were you going penalize a Giant for? For being hit?
by Michael White on Aug 22, 2010 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Do you think they should have been penalized?
by Michael White on Aug 22, 2010 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions
It was completely obvious that it was intentional. Letting him hit, warming up Kuo, and sending CK out there only to plunk the first batter.
Torre didn’t exactly make it subtle.
by Michael White on Aug 22, 2010 1:46 PM PDT up reply actions
if
The Giants had come out onto field maybe but no way based on what actually happened that day.
by bhsportsguy on Aug 22, 2010 1:44 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
No, not for being hit, but for starting it: Lincecum plunked us first; and Bautista threw at us later.
Neither was intentional. Kershaw’s clearly was.
HBPs are part of baseball. If you intentionally plunk somebody you are going to be suspended. I didn’t see to much to argue with the league there.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 22, 2010 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions
No
it came after the Lincecum HBP of Kemp, because both sides were “even” at that point.
This really isn’t as difficult as you are making it
by Eric Stephen on Aug 22, 2010 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions
Warnings are there so that the other team doesn’t escalate what is often times an unintentional hit.
by Michael White on Aug 22, 2010 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions
warnings
Are just that. If they are heeded, no penalty. Dodgers did not abide by it, thus the penalty.
by bhsportsguy on Aug 22, 2010 1:49 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
the only thing that made it appear intentional was the timing. Kershaw’s pitch itself was just a little high. Lincecum’s pitches looked aimed at Kemp’s face (twice). Even if we let Lincecum slide, Bautista’s pitch at (Martin?) should’ve been received as Kershaw’s as it came post-warning. I’m just saying.
All I’m saying that there’s an advantage with throwing first because you usually don’t get penalized with suspensions if you do it first, and let the other team retaliate.
You seem to be under the impression that every HBP is intentional.
Well, every one that the other team perpetrates. I remember your rant about how Homer Bailey intentionally hit Manny last season.
by Michael White on Aug 22, 2010 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions
When a player like Lincecum who is known for his command throws two pitches behind Kemp that day? Yes, I think that was intentional.
He was wild all day. These guys aren’t perfect machines.
by Michael White on Aug 22, 2010 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions
The first pitch to Kemp was over the plate but high. Bison likes to overreact a little bit on high pitches that arent close to his head. i really think he was hit because of the way he acted on the previous pitch, and thats why the warning was issued.
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 22, 2010 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions
What i find unfair are the penalties imposed on the Reds/Cards v. what MLB doled out in the Dodgers/Giants game.
The difference between 5 games and 7 games is significant. The Dodgers were able to manage the suspension by pitching 1 pitcher on short rest. It’s not that clean with 7 games.

The RBI single, nothing hit hard despite the 3 for 4 balls in play attempts by the Reds so far.

If Prince can come back healthy, i really do think the offense can be good. It all depends on the OL and health, but we actually have some weapons to use. I’m really excited for the season (and for the fact that I’ll have a little vacation every Saturday from law school).

Is Kevin Prince just another name for Ben Olsen?
Seems he gets just as injury prone as Olsen did for his career.
Seems like it. Torn knee in high school, broken jaw and concussion last year, pulled muscle before the season starts this year. UCLA football is just snakebit in terms of health.
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 22, 2010 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions
The OL play will be bad, but this is the best group of WR’s you’ve had in quite some time. I think alot will come down to Prince’s health – not sure they other qb’s are ready to contribute in big games.
Malcolm jones will also be a complete stud. This year, with the schedule, I dont know if the results (in terms of w/l) will be that great, next year and the year after could be really fun.
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 22, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions
The schedule and the roster makeup were going to produce a tough year no matter what, there’s only 1 guaranteed win on that schedule as of now. I actually think the injuries give Rick a bit of an out if the team goes 3-9, 4-8, etc. Normally you throw that up there and you take heat in year 3, but I bet he doesn’t now.
I agree that the team will improve record wise in 2011.
From what I’ve heard the most impressive freshman have been Barr and Riley.
They both are studs. So are Malcolm, Olanyian, Zumwalt, etc. Last years class was just huge. I cant see this team winning only 3 or 4 games, but you never know in college football.

The schedule is insane. Additionally, the games where you’d most likely win for sure if it were at home – like UW, ASU, etc, are all road games.
Another reason why 9 conf. games is an awful idea for our conf. In theory it sounds great but it’s really hurting the conf. overall.
How does
having the fairest possible schedule hurt the conference?

Guaranteed extra 5 losses
Hurts BCS rankings. Those are 5 wins that are now gone. It especially hurts b/c our conference already overschedules b/c teams like USC and UCLA simply do it for football reasons, and the OSU’s and Wazzu’s do it for money.
I’m fine with it if everyone else did it.
Those aren't guaranteed loses
if your team is good enough to win em.
How would you define your approach to management, apart from being brilliant?
by Josie Becker on Aug 22, 2010 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes it is. It’s a guaranteed 5 additional losses for the Pac 10 overall. If a Pac 10 team plays a Pac 10 team, someone is losing.
I see what you're saying
but it hasn’t mattered for USC, Oregon, OSU
How would you define your approach to management, apart from being brilliant?
by Josie Becker on Aug 22, 2010 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions
I’m with you. I’d rather it be fair then worry about BCS type stuff. The BCS birth is the automatic bid and playing every squad ensure that is granted fairly.
by Michael White on Aug 22, 2010 2:33 PM PDT up reply actions
That's for the auto bid.
But there’s a real possibility that a 9th conf. game could cost the conf. a national title game contender, and additionally a 2nd BCS team (assuming the Rose would take the Pac 10 #2 as a backup).
I see other conferences doing whatever they can to maximize rankings, BCS and National title game appearances, and I wish we’d follow suit.
As for the champ, we’re going to a title game next year anyways.
It could have, especially for USC in 2008. Who knows how those BCS rankings shake out if each Pac 10 team played an extra non conf. game over a conf. game. There’s risk with no reward other than trumpeting a pure system. But as we’ve seen that’s irrelevant with teams basically scheduling their way into national title games (ahem, Texas).
Pardon my short argument, but
so? The Pac 10 is expanding in a year, things will change. A 10 team conference can’t mimic the 12 teamers. So you’re getting your wish, and in the meantime, the Pac10 doesn’t have years where two teams go undefeated since they don’t play each other, and then the Rose Bowl is a toss up
How would you define your approach to management, apart from being brilliant?
by Josie Becker on Aug 22, 2010 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh, the schedule is definitely brutal. I just cant see a 3 or 4 win season unless we just get killed even more with injuries.
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 22, 2010 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions
I didn’t think so either until actually sifting through each game. I would call Texas, USC, Oregon, and Cal losses. Then to get to 6-6 you are talking 6-2 v. Stanford, UW, Wazzu, OSU, the Zonas, Houston, and at K State. Just a brutal schedule.
Prince’s health will be a huge factor.
I have a different opinion about the USC game :). There isnt a ton of depth for both teams, so who knows who will be on the field for the SC/UCLA game.

First post..
I’m glad Vinny is back. Just saw the news on Yahoo as I came back from lunch. Scully is really the voice of the Dodgers as Lawler is the voice of the Clippers and Chick Herns is of the Lakers. Dodgers fans (I included) is really blessed to be able to live in the era where Vinny is still calling games. He has a unique voice that is hard to forget. I have a feeling when Scully finally retires, we’ll be complaining about the how much of the downgrade is from the future announcer to Scully and reminiscence back to the old times when Scully was calling the games.
For a first time poster
that was a fairly well put summary of every comment ever made on TBLA ever

Thank you
I remember I had the same thought a few months ago. I fell out of love for baseball a for a few years because I got into baseketball, as I was really into the Gary Sheffield, Shawn Green, Tim Brown, Gagne-era. Now that I think about it, more than half of them were accused of Steroids…But anyway, I’d be watching Angels game Rex Hudler wasn’t a horrible announcer, he was quite entertaining actually. But when you switched over to a Dodger game, Scully is very knowledgeable of the game and is happy to provide all the knowledge he can to the viewers. The fact that he works alone is the icing to the cake. I would NEVER want to hear an announcer cut off Scully during a play. The way Scully describes his plays are magnificant, constantly in details and never missing a play.

According to Sports by Brooks (disclaimer), Jay Mariotti was going to get a local morning show (6 to 8 AM) with Jalen Rose on AM 710.
Cowherd would probably be moved to 830 AM. Where most of the national ESPN shows are now. 710 is going local heavy.
But they left 710 due to the Lakers games if I remember right. To reup with them so soon makes me wonder why the Angels would start up a new station and then abandon it.
I also find it appalling that 710 was going to hire Mariotti, USC should get out of that contract merely for them even considering hiring him.
Ha. Five seconds before you posted this, I looked up ILS on youtube and am listening to the album version.

On the plus side, you won’t be able to file this under “blown save”.

the Reds already have their insurance run, c'mon
That which is in constant motion contains all possible forms.
Wish I had a screen cap of Votto looking at his hand like that

He's really throwing gas now
my only worry was just the # of balls that just seem to droop out of the strike zone these days.

No, he reached in too far.

Is Broxton
back up to 96-97 or is the gun corked?
How would you define your approach to management, apart from being brilliant?
didn’t see 1st 2 AB…had some 93-94s in there

so close Pods

My theory on great battles like this is that the hitter usually wins.
So many fouls let him get a good bead on the pitcher and what he’s throwing.

Well, yeah.
But, we can enjoy some good tension if it’s only a one-run game. Now, we get into that resignation mode.

I am not a huge advocate either way on booing.
If someone drops their cash on it and want to boo, go right ahead.
I’m not doing it, but to each his own.
I'm not a fan either
I’m just not going to rip fans who boo either, unless they’re booing amateur athletes.
I don’t like it when fans boo players I like (Broxton and Billingsley.)
I didn’t give a shit when they did it to Jones.
by Michael White on Aug 22, 2010 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions
I kind of agree
I mean, who are they booing? Broxton? Torre, for leaving him in, or for trusting him in the first place? Or, just the team in general? If it’s the latter … that sucks.
by TopDeckTrueBlue on Aug 22, 2010 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Broxton overused
It’s pretty clear that Broxton was pitching very well and not being used too much. Now that Torre brings him out in a day game after a night game, it’s touch and go with 3 on base. Just don’t use him so much. Definitely a liability in a supposed closer, but there you are.

I think it's the other way
his problems started when he stopped getting regular work

Yup. It’s baseball. These things happen for no reason at all sometimes.
by Michael White on Aug 22, 2010 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions
But he is 20 for 20 in save opps with less than three days rest. 2 for 7 with three or more days rest.
"A baseball game is nothing but a great slow contraption for getting you to pay attention to the cadence of a summer day."
The problem is you can’t create save opps out of thin air, especially when the offense sucks donkey nuts.

That was a great idea, Ellis. Call a fastball straight down the middle to Joey Fucking Votto with the bases loaded and a right-handed pitcher up.
He called a lot of pitches. It was a 10-pitch AB
by Eric Stephen on Aug 22, 2010 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Lets not forget
Brox is struggling, and Votto is a complete beast. Tough to hang that on the catcher.
Kim freakin' Edmonds?!
OK, that was a typo, but I’m gonna let it ride. I actually like him a lot.

I don't think I can get over the foul ball that Scotty Pods should have been caught.
Any LF makes that play,Manny, JP, GIbbons. How can you not make that play?
I don’t think Manny would have made the play.
Gibbons would have dove, had the ball in his glove, then dropped it :)

If his name is really pronounced Lance, why does he spell it Laynce? Since Vin has never given us a Torvit type story, I’m assuming his parents just can’t spell? Or is there some regional accent supposed to come into it?

Personally
I’m excited about the Raiders for the first time in years, so I’ll watch. Plus I’m such a college football psycho that I like seeing young guys get reps. More importantly nothing else is on.
Watch it? How can anyone pay for a ticket?
Matt Kemp - Bringer of drought, puncher of babies faces(ugly ones killed on site), not Larry Bowa's GUY
Yeah
But, I can barely watch regular season, at least while baseball is still on. I start paying attention round ’bout November.
