Dodgers Week 20 In Review: Lee And Scully Make For A Good Week
Stop me if you have heard this before, but the Dodgers pitched very well last week, especially the starters, but also were plagued by a paucity of runs. The Dodgers lost four of seven games this week, but this was a memorable week for two reasons.
On Monday, the Dodgers signed their first-round draft pick, Zach Lee, luring him away from becoming a quarterback at LSU. From the very moment Lee was drafted, the consensus was that Lee was unsignable and that Frank McCourt was punting this pick so they wouldn't have to pay a hefty draft bonus this year. However, in the end, Lee was signed, providing a reason for optimism. Sure, the club-record $5.25 million signing bonus was spread out over five years, but at least from a symbolic standpoint, the fact that Lee is now in the organization is a positive step.
On Sunday, the Dodgers announced that Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully would return for the 2011 season, his 62nd year with the team. The Dodgers simply wouldn't be the Dodgers without Vin.
Dodger Batter of the Week: Jamey Carroll had the best week among the starters, hitting .333/.440/.429, so he gets the award. I was tempted to award either Reed Johnson (4-for-7 with a home run) or Jay Gibbons (3-for-7 with a home run) but they just didn't have enough at-bats. Overall, the bench of Johnson, Gibbons, A.J. Ellis, and Ronnie Belliard combined to hit .407/.448/.630 for the week.
Dodger Pitcher of the Week: Ted Lilly wins for the second-straight week, thanks to his two-hit shutout of the Rockies on Thursday. The starters were fantastic this week, averaging 6.71 innings per start with a microscopic 1.91 ERA.
Week 20 Record: 3-4
24 runs scored (3.43 per game)
20 runs allowed (2.86 per game)
.583 pythagorean winning percentage
Season Record: 63-62
540 runs scored (4.32 per game)
537 runs allowed (4.30 per game)
.503 pythagorean winning percentage (63-62)
Transactions:
- Friday: The Dodgers placed Vicente Padilla on the 15-day disabled list with a bulging disc in his neck. Taking Padilla's place on the roster was Travis Schlichting, who was recalled from Triple A Albuquerque
- Saturday: The Dodgers activated Manny Ramirez from the disabled list, and to make room Juan Castro was designated for assignment.
- Sunday: The Dodgers activated Jeff Weaver form the disabled list, and placed Travis Schlichting on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.
- Sunday: The Dodgers claimed catcher Rod Barajas from the Mets. He will join the Dodgers in Milwaukee on Tuesday
Game Results:
- Monday: Braves 4, Dodgers 3
- Tuesday: Dodgers 6, Rockies 0
- Wednesday: Rockies 3, Dodgers 2
- Thursday: Dodgers 2, Rockies 0
- Friday: Reds 3, Dodgers 1
- Saturday: Dodgers 8, Reds 5
- Sunday: Reds 5, Dodgers 2
Upcoming Week: The Dodgers hit the road, where they have lost 14 of 17 games since the All-Star break. This week, the Dodgers travel to the land of beer and bratwurst, then satisfy their taste for Rocky Mountain Oysters.

Casey Blake was the big RBI guy for the week
and I’m concerned about you Eric. I think you’ve been drinking PBR late at night with Bowa. You naming Jamey Gamer as the hitter of the week! I’m kidding, you didn’t have a lot to choose from. :)
Haha!
I don’t know if you know this, but Jamey Carroll is the MVP of this team :)

It's sad that Furcal is at 4 WAR in like 76 games
and might not even play again this season.
Carroll is going to end up with the 2nd highest WAR on this team behind him I’m sure.

Check on the pricing of NFL LIVE Mobile today at work. You asked me to remind you.
Thanks again man.
Hmmm, I'm not sure if this is true
At launch, NFL Mobile will be available on 13 3G Smartphones and 3G Multimedia Phones, including DROID by Motorola, Motorola DEVOUR™, DROID ERIS™ by HTC, BlackBerry® Curve™ 8530, BlackBerry Curve™ 8330, BlackBerry Storm2™, BlackBerry Storm™, BlackBerry Tour™, BlackBerry 8830 World Edition, LG Chocolate Touch™, LG enV® TOUCH, LG VX8360 and Samsung Rogue™.
NFL Mobile is a free app covering the 2010 NFL season, with no subscription or monthly charges if customers download it by Dec. 31, 2010. For customers without an unlimited data plan, data or megabyte charges may apply when downloading or using the application.
Beginning today, customers with Android phones can download the app from the Verizon Channel in Android Market™. Customers with BlackBerry devices can enter http://mobile.vzw.com/nfl on their smartphones’ browsers to download the app. Over the next few weeks, BlackBerry customers will also receive a virtual pre-load of the NFL Mobile app to the homescreen of their smartphones. Customers with select 3G Multimedia Phones can get the app by texting “NFL” to 2777 to receive directions on how to download.
It says here the app is free, but I’m guessing the actual service definitely is not. I’ll keep looking until I can ask my coworker when she gets in at 9.

Ok, found it

Mid-post update: There is one major negative and it might be a deal breaker. As of 9/1, a $10 per month VCAST subscription will be needed to play video. (Yuck.) Like our $30 required data package isn’t enough? And I just went from uber-excited blogger to half-way depressed blogger. I need RedZone everywhere!
So as of right now it looks free to get the app, but starting in September you need to pay that $10 a month subscription to Vcast.

yeah
cool thing though. In the Dodger magazine they give you when you drive through the gates, there was a little article about Russ Mitchell. It said that the longest he’s spent at any level is 2 years in AA. Tim Wallach also said he thought he played third base very well and praised him for his attitude and work ethic. called him a “throwback player” which i’m sure translates as “chock full o’grit”

It is now August 23rd
We are 7 days away from the scheduled start of the McCourt Divorce trial.
More than anything that happens on the field, these next 7 days could be much more significant to the future of our beloved franchise. I will be counting down the days to see what transpires.
Man our offensive core is sucking wind
I will say as bad as Loney / Kemp numbers are they did seem to hit into some bad lucky when they put the bat on the ball.
rolling over to shortstop does that. Though the last game of the Rockies series brought hope that Kemp was breaking out and he seems to at least be doing that. Maybe Donnie is helping finally, or maybe Kemp finally asked for help, or maybe Don is making a late push to look helpful so he can be manager, or….who knows.
Matt Kemp can make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.
It is time...
As much as it pains me to say this…IT IS TIME TO START SELLING.
I think pretty much every guy not under contract beyond this year should be made available. Manny, if healthy, should be the Number 1 guy being shopped.
The one guy that I think I would keep (even though he would probaly bring us a high return) is Ted Lilly. Lilly has be amazing and I would love to keep him around in hopes of giving us the edge in resigning him.
Anyway, SELL! SELL! SELL! Get some good prospects back this year, pick up some good free agents in the off season, come back roaring into next year AND let WIN FOR VIN be our battle cry!
I could be wrong though…I’m pretty drunk.
Can we even be sellers at this point and expect anything more than salary relief?

From Fannation.com - more Dave Stewart
here’s what Stewart thinks about Dodgers fans. “Do you think for one moment I care about the town of L.A. or the fans there?” Stewart wrote in an e-mail to Page 2. … A few days ago, Kemp said he didn’t want to go anywhere, but now there’s the question left unanswered whether he has changed his mind and come around to his agent’s thinking. Is Stewart trying to talk Kemp’s way out of town?
When I saw this I just shook my head. Is there a player that has been more mismanaged by both his coaches/management and his agent? I mean, it is not like the guy is crazy like Milton Bradley, yet he is constantly getting bad press and his agent just flames the situation.
Man, that is too bad. Damage control!
by robotmadeofnails on Aug 23, 2010 9:15 AM PDT up reply actions
I’m not exactly sure what Dave Stewart is trying to do here, but it doesn’t figure to do his client any favors. Whenever you slight the fans, things tend to go badly. If he is trying to bully Dodger management into something, I don’t see how this accomplishes it.
For a while I liked Dave
but this is not very smart on his part. Having your clients back is one thing, denigrating the fans that your client pays for is simply not smart. I will now have to make fun of Davids pipsqueak voice. For those who have never heard Dave Stewart speak, think of Mike Tyson.
Also, at least Tyson was banging beauty queens (OK, bad analogy)
by Eric Stephen on Aug 23, 2010 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah, I guess the intent is to threaten his client leaving via free agency. However he paints himself and his client (by association) in a bad light. Why would he care more about NY’s fans or Atlanta’s fans or Chicago’s fans if he doesn’t care about LA’s? Stewart should want the backing of the fans right now for his client, now not only does he not hustle all the time but his agent doesn’t care for LA or its fans. Way to boost up your client Dave.
Why would he care more about NY’s fans or Atlanta’s fans or Chicago’s fans if he doesn’t care about LA’s?
I took that as they don’t care about fans period, regardless of who they root for. As in, we’ll play for whoever pays.
An-trade, An-trade an-trade an-trade, An-trade, An-trade.
I didn’t know the man from his playing days, I was too young to remember, but I always respected what he did on the mound. That being said, Dave Stewart is a tool and Matt Kemp needs to find new representation. I hope it isn’t Boras, but I don’t want to dislike Matt Kemp or see him booed because his owner is a dipshit.
An-trade, An-trade an-trade an-trade, An-trade, An-trade.
My bad I guess...
I ignore Simers and I saw the quote through clicking on a CNN.com article of all places.
Agreed. Ever since I heard Simers talk on Dodger Talk a couple weeks ago I refuse to believe anything he says. He has reached Plashke/McCarver/Buck/Morgan/Marriotti status with me.
That being said, what I said about Kemp needing a new agent stands.
An-trade, An-trade an-trade an-trade, An-trade, An-trade.
I wouldn’t put anyone on Mariotti status. Plaschke is actually a good guy and a good writer, he just knows nothing about sports, and McCarver and Buck are just annoying. Mariotti is legitimately a complete piece of shit, a hypocrite, and lacks any and all professionalism.
I’ve met Bill a couple times, he is a good guy. I just disagree entirely with his perspective on sports.
Dave Stewart is a complete D Bag
What purpose does saying that serve? You’d never hear bs like that from Boras or any other agent with any modicum of class.

Newbie
Once upon a time I was the Boom’s Boom’s biggest advocate. When he was traded leaving us with no 3rd baseman, that is what opened the door for the Santana deal and I spent much to much time hating the Betemit/Proctor deal. It is why when someone say Carlos Pena would fit in well they don’t seem to remember that Ned does not grasp OB versus Average. Betemit had some problems but that year he was hitting home runs and walking.
The worst part about Betemit / Ned in 2006 was when Colletti called Betemit out for being an offensive disappointment when his OPS was 800+.

When he was traded leaving us with no 3rd baseman
Hmm… where have I heard that before?
Suddenly all is clear: In high school, no girl would let Ned get to third base. Now that he is in a position of power, he is going to get his revenge by trading every third baseman in the organization!
And they call him mad!…. Mad!

Roger that
I get the love affair now. I am slowly working my way towards other stats besides the ones I followed my whole life.
I had never seen stats like FIP, X-FIP, wOBA and others until I started coming on here. I still don’t really know what those mean, but I am considering learning….
Love affair is to strong
I just felt Betemit had more uses then a crappy setup man like Proctor even if his only job was to jack home runs off the bench.
And for two years
I’ve felt very silly about my rants in favor of Boom Boom, so I’m taking his play this summer to heart.
I would never
want a middle of the road reliever over a switchhitting corner IF with pop.
I know he isn’t the greatest “average” guy, but he has use on a team, like you said.
Here's how that trade went down
Ned: “Brian?”
Cashman: “Helllllooooo, Ned.”
Ned: “Hey, I’m here with Joe.”
Joe: “Hi, Brian!”
Cashman: “Joe! How you like LA?”
Joe; “All the women here are gorgeous and mostly naked! I love it!”
Cashman: “I’m happy for you.”
Ned: “Uh, listen Brian — calling to see the availability of Scott Proc…”
Joe: “I FUCKING LOVE THAT GUY! PROCTOR!!!”
Ned: “Anyway, is he available?”
Cashman: “Sure, but I want Betemit.”
Joe: “AWESOME YOU CAN HAVE THAT FUCKER JUST SEND OVER THE PROCTOLOGIST!!!”
Ned: “….looks like you got Betemit.”
In the background, Torre dances around, making whooping and hollering noises. Then he screams.
Joe: “Ahhhhhhh! I just spilled my Bigelow Green Tea all over myself!! Fuck, it burns!!”
Cashman: “I’ll call the league office.”

If he does get non-tendered by the Royals
I hope we pick him up for a bench option or to platoon with Blake or whatever in 2011. I always liked the fact that he could walk with us and he really did have some pretty good pop. I hated that we traded him away when we did.
I’m all for getting him for about 2.5-3 mill and seeing what he can do.

Russell Martin is a type-A FA.
If we non-tender him, we should also offer him arbitration. (This is a joke.)

So Eric, I gather that tears are okay in the press box, or did you get escorted out?
How strange is our culture/brain that I will tear up simply watching old Dodger highlights, but when watching TV, and find out 1500 Pakistani’s had died in a flood, I have simply no emotional response.
I teared up a few times, no question. When they did the Vin tribute, I applauded from my seat, and Ken Levine got up from his seat to get a better view of the video board while it was playing. He loves Vin, and was so excited.

sickels on rubby
de la rosa Very intriguing pitcher, yes, althoug his walk rate has shot up in Double-A, granted that’s a big jump from the Midwest League. Yes, I like the grounders with a decent strikeout rate and reports of plus stuff. Comps….I dunno. Grade right now would be in the B range I think, maybe B-, not sure yet. Need to tap Midwest sources.
blake smith
Smith He’s a prospect due to his power, but his strikeout rate is quite high and he might not hit for much of an average at higher levels. C/C+ prospect.
My question!!!
I didn’t expect much else, I’d be cool with a C+ rating.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
When put together...
about a C+ for Smith and about a B- for Rubby doesn’t quite seem right.
My twitter = @neufaustcan
If Rubby gets a B
I wonder how many B or B- prospects we’d have.
I’d have to imagine everyone in the top 100 is at least a B- prospect, so if Rubby goes that high, that means we’d have 8 prospects at least at that level. Nice.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
The Dodgers B- prospects this year included noted talents like Andrew Lambo, Scott Elbert and Ivan DeJesus.
Ahead of them at B was master of the straight ball Josh Lindblom.

It’s not stopped traffic, it’s very slow moving. I don’t think the whole freeway is closed. I’ve heard the country has a poor infrastructure as far as highways to support so many people, and this just kind of figures. The problem is they’re fixing a freeway that broke due to high traffic when they really need to build a whole new one. They built the great wall, they should be able to build an I-40.

Loney
I have been a long time supporter but that line (.087/.160/.130/.290) is brutal. Watching inning after inning of runners on base and the heart of the order hitting weak ground balls and taking third strikes is demoralizing.
i'm sure everyone's line is similar
so I wouldn’t jump on Loney. Though it seems he probably won’t be developing that power everyone wants from him, at least not with the Dodgers.

I figure with the way he loves to spray the ball to left along with playing in that division he could probably push for 20.
Let’s trade Loney for Fielder and sign Guillermo Mota in the offseason. BATTLE ROYALE!

Totally agree. I was kidding about Fielder. But I could see the Brewers dealing him to someone else for prospects then looking around for a MLB first baseman. Maybe in a year we could jump in on that as the third team.

like for a stretch run?
assuming the team is within striking distance of the playoffs. What I could maybe see, is the team trading Loney to the Brewers for Fielder(probably not straight up, but this is all just a theory so don’t kill me for it) and have him be that big bat in the lineup for next year while Sands develops in the minors as a 1B. Then when Fielder hits FA, offer him arb(my guess is he’ll be a Type A) and he will obviously not accept as Boras will get him a huge payday from some team. Then hopefully Sands will be ready to take over 1B in 2012
Again, total theory.

I'm ready to ship him off somewhere and wouldn't even be mad to see him get that power
I think it’s going to take a different stadium and different team for him to become a better hitter, I honestly think so.
James seems like a great guy, and I love having him on the team, especially for his defense, but his offense is costing us. Kemp freakin sucks, but at least he’s got 21 homeruns, lol.

I have a comment just below this in which I talk about “the Dodgers’ biggest problems” in terms of their needs…
…but if I take a different way of looking at it, I could probably say that the Dodgers’ biggest problem is that Matt Kemp took a step backwards this year. The Dodgers really needed him to become a homegrown superstar. If that doesn’t happen, if he’s nothing special… that is maybe the biggest problem for the Dodgers going forward.

It's what makes this season so depressing.
It’s not like Dodger fans can point to injuries (even though there have been injuries) or bad luck (even though there has been bad luck).
The core didn’t perform. That’s the reason the Dodgers are where they are. There’s nothing to be done for 2011 except buy three SP, then buy a LF or CF if they can afford it, fill out the bench and bullpen, and cross their fingers. Either the core will bounce back or they will not.

I recall during MLB’s season preview in March or April or whatever, MLBN’s analysts thought the Dodgers would finish in third place because they wouldn’t have the pitching.

The crappy minor leaguer will likely do as bad or worse, but at a much, much cheaper cost. There lies the silver lining.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
Unfortunately the 4ish million you save on Loney isn’t enough to do anything particularly productive.
by regfairfield on Aug 23, 2010 1:24 PM PDT up reply actions
Not by itself, no. But non-tender Sherrill (or trade him, his value might actually be coming back to a certain point), non-tender Martin, and trade or non-tender Loney and that’s about 12 million or so saved.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
12 million saved, but two new holes to plug. I realize those guys shouldn’t be leaving holes that the team couldn’t plug internally, but we don’t have any serious options at either spot.
Really?
Martin and/or Loneys production could be matched for under $5mm total if the right FA’s were signed.
You think that now
But no one here would have guessed Miguel Olivo would outperform Martin. He was signed for $2.7mm.
That is one example, but these things happen every year.
Or you could spend that same money on Rod Barajas. Sure you might strike gold, but odds are whoever you get is going to be awful.

Honestly, Loney is playing just about as bad as any player has in the entire MLB over the last couple of months
would it be so bad if a guy making 400,000 was doing the same thing but we had that financial flexibility? At least we’d be able to say “well, at least we know he sucks, we don’t have to get our hopes up that he could be really good.”
That’s awful, but I’d prefer that with the extra money to what we’ve got now.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
What's sad
is that for the past few years, even the most milquetoast of Loney defenders, like myself, could say, hey stop picking on Loney. He’s cheap and he’s OK enough. He’s by no means the club’s biggest problem, and he’s still young enough that he could develop into Mark Grace.
Now, a few years have gone by, and he’s gonna make $4.5 million or so next year, and he’s having his worst year in the majors….
…and he is still not the biggest problem on the Dodgers — not when they need three starting pitchers and are saying with a straight face that they might start Xavier Paul in LF. I wish I had a slugging first baseman, too, but what to do about first base has got to be sixth or seventh or eighth on the Dodgers’ list of question marks, and they’ll run out of money before they get to it.

I think it's more outguessing than speed
they don’t think he’s gonna run, and then he does. I also think that’s part of the reason Kemp’s base stealing has regressed (notice i said PART). Teams just expect he’s gonna run now, so they watch him closer.

This is why we should have traded him last year
His value was higher, teams would have thought he had more “upside” and we likely could have replenished other holes/needs. For the money Loney is about to be paid there are numerous options and/or platoon parts.
Yeah, it sure looks like I was wrong.
I don’t know that I was a Loney BELIEVER so much as I was willing to stick with the guy and see if he could develop, because the team had other problems.
In retrospect, the team would be better if they’d made the change. Again, he’s still not the team’s biggest problem, but that’s only because of the magnitude of the team’s other problems.

I'll be writing about that 67 season in about two weeks.
It was the worst of times, it was the worst of times.
1967 had some interesting stuff though
A great series with Gibson vs. Lonborg in game 7. Conigliaro getting beaned. A 15 inning All star game.
Plus, Sgt Pepper!

I hope to god...

love the Manny Ramirez trash can. Clearly, Larry bowa did not design it or Matt Kemp would be on it.

Oh come on. You can make a better Matt Kemp/trash can joke.
Here’s one:
