So if Kuroda is claimed by someone like the Yankees...

they have to work a trade for him if no one ahead of NYY claimed him, or Dodgers can pull him back, right?

Dodgers will have to weigh the option of:

1) keeping Kuroda, potentially getting a supplemental first round pick (then again he could accept arb and get an 8-figure deal for one season)

2) getting a player from the Yankees (perhaps better than a supplemental first rounder, though unlikely), plus saving somewhere north of $2.5m or so.

I would just assume another team would claim him far before the Yankees.

by Alex41592 on Aug 24, 2010 4:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Right

but whatever team claims him, the same decision making process would happen.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 24, 2010 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's say Kuroda is gone Friday

just for instance. Including Friday, there are 38 days left in the season.

Kuroda would be owed $2,699,454 ($13m / 183 × 38) for the rest of the year.

When a player is put on waivers

the claiming process goes from the worst record in the same league to the best record in that league. If no one claims them, they go to the other league, worst record to best. So, if Manny goes on waivers, the worst record NL team(Im guessing the Pirates) gets 1st crack and the order goes all the way to the Padres, the best record in the NL. If no team claims him, then the Orioles get first crack in the AL(worst record) all the way to the Yankees, the best AL record.

Whoever is the first to claim the player gets 3 days to try to work out a trade. The team that put the player on waivers can either trade the player or pull him back. If he is pulled back, the player can be put on waivers again, but he cannot be pulled back. If he is claimed a 2nd time, that claiming team gets the player

Roto is a skill

not luck, sometime you get bad or good luck but a good player will find a way to overcome his bad luck to the point he can be competitive. If you play in any money league over time the same 20% owners will always be the ones playing for the money. Sometimes a lucky team will sneak in but just like in baseball SSS applies.
With sites like Baseball HQ more and more players are educated, but an amazing amount of players still have not grasped SSS. Buying old guys at 1/2 the price of the new toys is usually a good way to play the game. The new toys always are over priced, and the old toys are ignored. Plenty of strategies but it is a skill.

This isn’t Manny over a full season, this is Manny for a stretch dive for the last month of the season and for the playoffs. Who cares if he can’t play LF, he will hit much better than Melky Cabrera.

I don’t believe any player is above criticism and certainly he is no longer a rookie and frankly he has not played well in many facets of the game this year. He is certainly not the worst player on the team but given how important he is to the team’s success, his drop in production is magnified.

However, he should not be poster boy for what is wrong with this team, losing Manny, Rafael Furcal and Martin for long periods of times are as important if not more so.

Let me just add

The owners blew it when they just didn’t accept Marvin Miller’s proposal that every player become a free agent after one year thus creating an open market place and lack of multi-year contracts. Also they let arbitration enter the picture way too easily.

If only we were playing in the LLWS. That replay would take about 10 seconds and the call would be correct.

by UCLADodger32 on Aug 24, 2010 6:11 PM PDT reply actions

but those extra 10 seconds would "slow down the game"

and what about the “human element” and all the other old talking points that we keep hearing over and over to counter every possible argument of logic and reason for expanded replay?

The Dodgers put Hiroki Kuroda on waivers, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). Kuroda hits free agency after the season, but the Dodgers don’t necessarily want to move him. A rival executive guaranteed Rosenthal that the Yankees will be “all over” Kuroda if he reaches them on waivers.

He’s only given up like 2 runs in 35 innings..

Walks are a bit high but doesnt look like any AA hitters can lift his fastball.

by Eric Stephen on Aug 24, 2010 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Was that on my list?

I think Mike and I had different lists.

I’m glad Lilly is still magic, and I"m sorry I missed the Kemp at bat. Which makes me wonder, everyone thought Kemp had crushed a 500 foot home run but it triangulates to 447 feet. Songco’s was actually 508 feet. Can you imagine what that looked like?

by meercatjohn on Aug 24, 2010 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions
