Dodgers Go For Road Sweep In Milwaukee
The Dodgers find themselves in rare territory today, going for a road sweep after winning the first two games in Milwaukee. The Dodgers, who are 26-35 away from Dodger Stadium this season, have had four previous road sweep opportunities this season:
- May 12: Dodgers 6, D-Backs 3
- May 16: Dodgers 1, Padres 0
- June 17: Reds 7, Dodgers 1
- June 30: Dodgers 8, Giants 2
Carlos Monasterios gets the start today for the Dodgers, making his 10th start of the season, joining John Ely as the second rookie to get 10 starts for the club this year. Since returning from the disabled list on July 10, Monasterios has six walks and 19 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings, a vast improvement over his 16 walks and 21 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings before landing on the DL.
The Brewers counter with their best starter, Yovanni Gallardo. Gallardo is 11-5 with a 3.28 ERA, 2.99 FIP, and 3.49 xFIP this season. However, he has allowed 14 runs and 30 baserunners in just 16 1/3 innings in his last three starts. In fact, Gallardo has allowed four or more runs in six of his last eight starts.
Andre Ethier is hitting .317/.380/.524 this month, and hit his 20th home run of the season last night. Ethier became just the 10th LA Dodger to have three straight 20-homer seasons:
| LA Dodgers With 3 Straight 20-HR Seasons | ||
| Player | Years | Seasons |
| Ron Cey | 6 | 1975-1980 |
| Eric Karros | 6 | 1995-2000 |
| Mike Piazza | 5 | 1993-1997 |
| Steve Garvey | 4 | 1977-1980 |

Yes, we are within shouting distance of the wild card lead, but while wins can help us move up, losses absolutely kill us (one step forward, two steps back). I’m not excited about our prospects because we have too many teams to leapfrog AND any missteps will destroy us. Must-win game with Monk on the mound? Gulp . . .

I was wondering if Manny/Boras would consider that sort of thing.
Seems like penny-wise and pound foolish. All that will do is ensure that he won’t be traded to an AL club, and Manny won’t get the oppurtunity to showcase his ability to DH so that he can actually earn his next contract.
If this is true, they’ll flinch. Manny gets nothing from staying with the Dodgers and limping along in LF.

That is what I thought. Isn’t he basically locked into going to Chicago or staying in LA? I would think he would want a couple other teams competing for his services this offseason.

So I guess we forget about Sands, Robinson, Rubby, Webster, Magill, the guys who are all having great seasons besides Jansen? Miller’s also having a nice season for the most part.
Martin and Withrow are having such dissapointing seasons, but there is still much to be glad for in our system.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"

I pretty much agree with that list.
Jansen’s really the only prospect we have without a gigantic flaw. The only other guys I’m a fan of are Sands and Trayvon. The last time we were down to three prospects I liked was the Malone era.

I can't believe people are still picking Gordon as the Dodgers best prospect
(looking at the poll on his post there)
Until he shows me he can actually field, or they figure out he should play another position, and he can be consistent, I won’t believe the hype. I voted for Lee, though, who hasn’t proven anything of course. Hard to pick, admittedly.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
You’re not a fan of Webster, Magill, or Rubby? Not as top prospects for us right now, but as pitchers who could be in a year or two.
Withrow and Martin are very dissapointing, but Miller’s had a good year all-around, Kyle Russell has been great since the AA AS-break, Wallach has been raking this year in AA, Gordon is still going to be highly ranked (might be good trade bait if they ever decide he’s tradeable) , and a few other guys who are worth nothing. I think it’s an exciting system, even if it’s not the Royals.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
Miller failed in AA. He’s a college pitcher who should be advanced enough to hold his own and couldn’t.
by Michael White on Aug 26, 2010 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions
So he's a little behind other college pitchers
Everyone should relax a little with how old people are. If he goes to AA next year and does well then goes to AAA to end the year or start the next year is he a non-prospect? Obviously not, so it’s a not gigantic deal that he had a hard time in AA in a month this year.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
I bet there’s not a lot of major leaguers that had a walk rate of 7 in AA.

by regfairfield on Aug 26, 2010 10:37 AM PDT up reply actions
I agree with this. We have some intriguing players, maybe they aren’t elite level prospects, but there is enough upside to where we should get some good players out of the current system.
I have basically zero faith in anyone who isn’t tabbed as at least a B prospect. I really don’t care if they become fringe major leaguers.
Rubby’s the most intriguing one and while he’s young and holding his own in AA a strike out rate under seven doesn’t excite me. Webster’s main tool seems to be a great approach rather than good stuff which I hate, and Magill is interesting but good but not dominant numbers in A ball don’t mean much to me.
There’s no one I can point to in the system except Jansen and say “this guy will probably make a big contribution to the Dodgers”. I haven’t seen that in a while.
by regfairfield on Aug 26, 2010 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions
Sands and Robinson aren’t intriguing? If Robinson can stick in CF, he has a good combination of pop and speed to go with developing patience which would be pretty valuable.
This was meant to be a reply to lvdown, and I mentioned that I liked Sands and Robinson up there. If either of them stop striking out so god damn much they’ll be good major leaguers. Sorry about that.
by regfairfield on Aug 26, 2010 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions
not directed at you reg
I love how whenever we get a decent prospect, we always look at whatever is wrong with them. Something to the effect of “sure, Rubby De La Rosa throws 100mph, doesn’t allow hits or walks, and his GB:FB ratio is crazy good, but you know, I can’t get excited about him until he can strike out one more guy per outing.”
Human nature I suppose. Sure we went to the NLCS the last two years, but you know, 2007 was rough.
Pele breathes words of comfort, Seena just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades, Is that a chevy 69?
Strikeout rate is the main thing I look for in a young pitcher. 6.7/4.4 K/BB just isn’t good at all. But he’s young, and can certainly improve.
I feel like if you can’t miss bats in AA, what’s going to happen when you move up to more advanced competition. It’s why I never got on the Lindblom train.

Well, kind of like the Dodgers playoff hopes I suppose. If Hawaii were to go undefeated they’d probably get a few looks. One loss and the rest of their games are meaningless. Probably the same for USC. If they lost to Hawaii the rest of their games would be meaningless as far as title hopes go.

It can be done if you lose one early
but usually you need some luck, and to play in the SEC.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
Yes, it can be done – but I’d assume the loss would have to come against a better team than Hawaii. USC doesn’t lose to scrubs like Hawaii, only to scrubs in the PAC-10. :)
Maybe
but I believe the earlier it happens the better, so proceeding to win the rest of your games will make you look pretty good at the end. None of this matters, since USC is going to end up at the emerald bowl.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
