do tell
Pele breathes words of comfort, Seena just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades, Is that a chevy 69?
I guess
they were telling him the hotel they were staying in was haunted. And the first night, he was reading the bible, and swears he saw something. It was like sharks smelling blood the way Monday tells it. A group of them, snuck into his room while he was out, and tied fishing line to his curtains in a way they could pull it from outside. So when he was in there and settled in, they pulled on the fishing line. And I guess Broxton had put a remote control elk call under his pillow, so the combination of that caused Jansen to spend the night sleeping on the floor of Kuo’s room.

Here comes Mr. Howard with a chance to win the game
Hit it once
Big Frank BUNTS?
Cepeda runs to field the ball, so does Hiller, so does Miller
Miller hollers Hiller
Hiller hollers Miller
Haller hollers Hiller points to Miller with his fist
And that’s the Miller, Hiller, Haller hallelujah twist
The Davises score it’s four to four
Howard’s still running the bases
From second to third it’s almost absurd
Amazement on everyones faces
He’s heading for home
He hasn’t a chance
The poor nut is gonna be dead
But the ball hits him right in the seat of his pants
And he scores
That’s using your head
So I say D, I say D-O,

Waivers
Unless Manny simply can’t play LF any more, I’m unsure why we would put him on waivers without also putting Lilly and Kuroda on waivers, too. Seems like we should either try to win it or bag it. Straddling the fence isn’t going to work.
Also, I think we would get more of a return for Lilly and Kuroda. No team is going to pay the rest of Manny’s salary this, year, give us a player, and give him an extension. We probably could get players for Lilly and Kuroda.
Consequently, if we’re not going to get anything but cash for Manny, I’d rather keep him and take our chances … however small they may be.
That 4 million is practically a whole nother player next year
if they where to actually shift that money to next years budget
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
Next year’s budget is in complete doubt anyways. What do I care about their 4 million dollars if I have to watch who the fuck knows who pitch for the rest of the season if they dump those two pitchers. Frank surprised everyone by pulling out 5.25m for Lee when everyone assumed there was no money. That just goes to prove that we can speculate all we want, but we really do have no idea how deep his pockets are, or how deep he wants to reach into those pockets for an extra player or two.
My comment was referring to Manny
Lilly and Kuroda are free agents next year anyways though, and maybe that 4 mil helps us resign them. 4 mil is a lot of cash for most teams regardless of budget.
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
I would be perfectly fine with that, actually. I don’t think re-signing any of the pitchers is dependent on them finishing the year here.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 26, 2010 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions
Eh
I’m on the fence about that, but I think the pitchers can help us far more then Manny. If we are dumping Manny though I would rather we just go all in, but being that we could be 4.5 games out at the end of the day I am starting to get conflicted(logic be damned)
Have you ever tried just turning off the TV, sitting down with your children, and hitting them?
Our chances are certainly slim, but I’m still unconvinced any of the NL teams are any good. The most frustrating thing this year is that if we made the playoffs, we wouldn’t be facing a truly dominant Phillies team.
if the Philles
make the playoffs. If the Dodgers get the WC, they’d have to win their division.

my band is playing on a santa barbara public access show tonight and there is gonna be a live ustream going on too. it’s happening tonight at 10pm, so if you are bored or just really interested in noisy and weird electronic improv music, tune in!!!
here’s the facebook event page with all the info: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=146388765384413

The umpire didn’t eject him.

Umpires all fucking suck. Just pay attention to the damn game and ignore what these guys are saying. Just pathetic.
They aren’t Buckingham Palace guards. If a guy is being a dick, it’s perfectly OK to run him.
I’m not speaking specifically of Ethier here since I didn’t see the play.
Last night, I hated when the ump took of his mask to talk shit to Kemp. I don’t think they should escalate matters, but they shouldn’t have to take everything either.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 26, 2010 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions
They just take things too personally. If a guy is frustrated, just let him air it out and dont say anything. If he continues, then you take issue with it. If someone says something from the dugout, just let it go unless it gets ridiculous.
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 26, 2010 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Agreed
One of the umpire books I studied and took a class under even specifically says “do not have rabbit ears” I will let someone say some stuff, but if they keep running their mouth, they get a warning.
by robotmadeofnails on Aug 26, 2010 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

The Dodgers have scored 4 or more runs in each game of a series only 6 times including this last one @ Milwaukee, the others are:
@Florida, @ Cincinnati, hosting Arizona, @ Arizona, and @ San Francisco. 3 times the Dodgers swept, twice they lost 2 out of 3.

it's very overrated, I agree. Global Football is preferable.
That which is in constant motion contains all possible forms.
the 2010 Dodgers
are not the worst team I’ve ever seen. They are CERTAINLY not the best. But they are the most bipolar.
Which do you prefer:
the over-the-top seemingly fake/forced emotion of Eric Collins, or the feable and usually nonexistent emotion of Charlie/Rick.

Policeman taps his shades, Is that a chevy 69?
Touche Elder Stephen.
Pele breathes words of comfort, Seena just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades, Is that a chevy 69?
I will add that
the 7th inning radio promotion of the first two Dodger batters having to hit back to back home runs is probably among the impossible for anyone to actually win.
since Rick and Charlie get beat up so much
I have to say that their banter during that promotion is usually funny- the way they make fun of the fact that there’s no chance whatsoever of winning that thing.
J
I remember some guy winning a million bucks because Jay Bell hit a grand slam in the appropriate inning in Arizona. now THAT was unlikely.

Did see something that made me think WTF, the showed the dodger dugout and there was Barajas sitting on the bench wearing his shin guards?!? If he keeps getting Ryan Braun out he
I want him back. He was on the restricted list for a reason, maybe he’s figured things out.

Reed with a knock, Bowa with a terrible hold. What an awful, awful decision. Theriot was 2 steps past the base when Braun got to the ball
I KNEW I shoulda stayed home to listen to the game
Instead, decided to be conscientious and come in to work for a few hours. Looks like I’m missing a lot of good stuff. I purloined an AM radio from the cube of someone who got canned, thinking I could listen to games on it, but it doesn’t pull in anything. Bah.

The Dodgers are the only team with at least three pitchers with at least 3 WAR. The Dodgers top three starters are combined 5th best in the NL in WAR behind the Phillies, Marlins, Cardinals, and Rockies.
I’m thinking of checking the AL after this to see how the Dodgers compare in the MLB if anyone is interested.

Only the starter has to complete five innings.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 26, 2010 1:35 PM PDT up reply actions
True for the starter, but no one can get a win until the 5th is completed — official game. Then it is up to the descretion of the official scorer who to give it to, if the starter does not finish the 5th. So, it can only be whomever finishes the 5th or pitches after him.
Since Jansen will go 2+, I would give it to him.
Not true
The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when at least one succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead. In such a case, the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the succeeding relief pitcher who was most effective, in the judgment of the official scorer.
All that matters is to be the “most effective” pitcher in the eyes of the official scorer, if the starter didn’t complete five (and the lead was maintained).
by Eric Stephen on Aug 26, 2010 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions
I have never seen a pitcher that wasn’t the starter, and whom didn’t complete the 5th inning get a win, no matter if he held the lead or not.
The game has to be official before anyone can get a win. Hence the reason, behind the starter having to go 5. Granted, the rule doesn’t state it that particular way. I just have never seen anyone who hasn’t pitched to make it an official game get a win. Sort of an unwritten rule, I think. Still think Jansen deserves this one.
so say the dodgers are winning 20-0 after 4
Starter gets yanked, each of the next 5 pitchers gives up 3 runs each, and dodgers win 20-15. The starter still can not get the win. thats crazy. But rules in ASG are different…. don’t know what to make of all this.
Despite what they tell you
the ASG doesn’t count. Hell, they called a tie.
elsid: that may be the case in a few games, but that’s definitely not the rule.

Official scoring rules does not indicate that you have to complete an inning to get the win
2) four innings of a game that lasts five innings on defense, then the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the relief pitcher, if there is only one relief pitcher, or the relief pitcher who, in the official scorer’s judgment was the most effective, if there is more than one relief pitcher.
Rule 10.17(b) Comment: It is the intent of Rule 10.17(b) that a relief pitcher pitch at least one complete inning or pitch when a crucial out is made, within the context of the game (including the score), in order to be credited as the winning pitcher. If the first relief pitcher pitches effectively, the official scorer should not presumptively credit that pitcher with the win, because the rule requires that the win be credited to the pitcher who was the most effective, and a subsequent relief pitcher may have been most effective. The official scorer, in determining which relief pitcher was the most effective, should consider the number of runs, earned runs and base runners given up by each relief pitcher and the context of the game at the time of each relief pitcher’s appearance. If two or more relief pitchers were similarly effective, the official scorer should give the presumption to the earlier pitcher as the winning pitcher.
© The official scorer shall not credit as the winning pitcher a relief pitcher who is ineffective in a brief appearance, when at least one succeeding relief pitcher pitches effectively in helping his team maintain its lead. In such a case, the official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher the succeeding relief pitcher who was most effective, in the judgment of the official scorer.
Rule 10.17© Comment: The official scorer generally should, but is not required to, consider the appearance of a relief pitcher to be ineffective and brief if such relief pitcher pitches less than one inning and allows two or more earned runs to score (even if such runs are charged to a previous pitcher). Rule 10.17(b) Comment provides guidance on choosing the winning pitcher from among several succeeding relief pitchers.

I think Manny is a non-factor at this point
If I were Ned, I wouldn’t change my strategy on trading/keeping Manny based on the sweep of Milwaukee. We have won recently in spite of him. He will likely get hurt again anyways, so just get your $4M for him and feed it to Z.Lee.
I agree, possible injury time a concern
We could really use the money more than Manny’s output to be honest. I just don’t trust that he won’t come up lame again between now and the end of the season. Get something from him now while you can.
plus the Dodgers' leverage is going up
hopefully that results in a better return. Too bad they already overpaid for E Jackson with Hudson!
That which is in constant motion contains all possible forms.

Besides age, how was Heywards 2009 way more impressive than Sands? Granted, doing it a younger age is great, but in the context of jumping from AA to the majors, Sands is not old and his year seems to be quite impressive. If the age difference does make Heyward “way way” more impressive then Sands then why wouldn’t Sands’ year be way more impressive than Howard due to the two year difference in their age in AA?

I don’t think we will have to worry about a 1/3 inning pitcher getting the win today.
Lots of major league firsts today for KJ: walk, run, win
According to the rule posted above, the “most effective” pitcher also includes situation they were brought into and context of the game. So I imagine Jansen striking out the side weith a 6 run lead is less important than Bellisario striking out Ryan Braun with the bases loaded, 1 out and the tying run on third.

FWIW - Jayson Stark tidbit
• L.A. state of mind: Teams have been waiting all month for the Dodgers to put Ted Lilly back on the waiver wire, with the assumption they’d be happy to move him and get something back at the end of a lost season. But teams that have felt out L.A. on Lilly’s availability report they don’t think the Dodgers are interested in trading him. If anything, after watching him win all five of his starts since the trade, they’d like to re-sign him. Which tells us that, at the very least, they probably would have no fear of offering him arbitration this winter.
