MiLB Dodger Recap 8/26/10 - DeJesus reaches .300

AAA – Isotopes go down 8 - 1, DeJesus gets three more hits, giving him five multi hit games out of the last six as he pushes his average to exactly .300. His post all star OPS is now 100 points higher then his pre all - star OPS. Edgar Gonzalez struck out 10, giving up four runs, Lindblom's lost season continues as he gives up five hits, three runs in two innings.

AA – The Lookouts took the opposite tack of the Loons and won 8 - 1behind another great start from Brent Leach. Leach threw another six shutout innings and now has thrown 13 shutout innings, while giving up only four hits. Kyle Russell drove in three runs with a double, Sands scored three times on two singles, and a walk. Gordon was caught stealing for the 20th time giving him two legs of the esteemed 40/40/20 club. With 36 errors and the season almost over he might fall short unless we count post season games. On the other hand he has shown the ability to make four errors in one game so he's still in the running. Both Trayvon and Russell are maintaining their plus .900 OPS in the Post All - Star game race.

High A – Starter Jon Redding was pounded for eight earned runs in less then three innings as they fall 12 - 5. Redding who was the winning est minor league pitcher in 2009 is quickly becoming the losing est Dodger pitcher in 2010.

A – The Loons drop the game 6 - 4, but BCG picked up three more hits including his 15th home run. BCG now has a post all - star OPS of 1.053 compared to his .669 pre all - star OPS. Very 2009 Sands like but you can bet BCG will not be a Loon in 2011. He's also stolen 42 bases, his game is very well rounded between speed and power but with only 2 walks in his last 240 plate appearances I just don't see a future.

Rookie Ogden – Raptors get racked 14 - 5.

Rookie Arizona – Funky Medina loses giving up five up the six runs in three innngs. Schebler had one hit and has had a hit all four his starts so far. Baldwin had two hits.

BCG

theres only 1 aspect of his game that is bad……. and its soooooooo baddd that it might keep him out of the bigs..

I still think he doesn’t walk because he hits the crap out of anything that dares to come close to the strike zone.

It sounds ass backwards, but I bet he walks more once advanced pitchers are able to go for corners more. I always heard the difference between MLB pitching and MiLB pitching is that the higher you move up the fewer mistake pitches you get. There are tons of guys in the minors with MLB caliber pitches who just can’t keep it out of the middle of the plate either because they’ve recently been made pitchers or they could dominate their HS/JuCo/college team with pure stuff.

Makes a guy with supposed pitchability like Zach Lee all the more intriguing.

should that be happeneing in A ball right now though??

like how they stopped pitching to sands and kept walking him and same with russell…

amazingly its not happening to BCG even though hes crushing it

Is he a good bad ball hitter

As in, pitchers are trying to pitch around him, but he isnt letting them?

i have no idea

this guy is interesting and i am very interested to see how he does next year… hopefully in AA

What has gotten into Leach?

He came up, was ok, then sucked in relief, went back down and is now doing great as a starter, or at least it seems that way… Does he have a future as a starter?

BCG and walks..

BCG walks only 2% of time…if he doubles that to 4%(last yr he was 3%) then he is like:
 ABeltre this yr..
Carlos Gonzales..Colo.
Polanco..Pphillies
DYoung.Minn
all .300 + hitters…Bet you would like any of them…
He has 2 yrs to get his walk rate up to 4% which should not be too tough…15 more walks a yr..Don’t write the guy off for walks cuz he can hit..maybe that means he is #5,6,7 hitter vs top of lineup for OPB folks.

He's doing this in the MWL

so if he can hammer at this level in AA while still only garnering only 2 – 4% walks then I’ll get very interested, but I’d expect the advanced pitching to take advantage of his aggressiveness. He’s fighting an up hill battle. Overly aggressive hitters in the 23 old age range in A ball have rarely made the move to the majors. The names you site, and all the names of the bad ball hitters I remember (Sandoval, Vlady, Sanguillen, Dunston) were already banging in the majors by the time they were 23. He still has three levels to climb.

I’ll see if I can back that up by finding walk rates less then 5% and what ages they made it to the majors and then had successful careers. At best he’s looking at hitting the majors by age 25. I’ll see if he has any comps, like a Berroa that would give hope.

Three of those guys mentioned were immensely talented raw players in the minors.

BCG is not on that level or even close.

Kyle Russell

How are people now rating Russell? In his time in AA, his wOBA is not good at .318, but as Phil notes he’s put it together after the all-star break. In 104 plate appearances, Russell has a wOBA of .408 this month and during that time is BB% is back up to 13.5%.

I would think this is the sort of growth people wanted/needed to see from Russell. He struggled with his first look at advanced pitching, but it seems like he’s making adjustments. Good to see.

by Michael White on Aug 27, 2010 7:25 AM PDT reply actions

B-/C+ prospect for me.

probably C+. I love his tools but I can’t get over the strikeouts.

by npurcell on Aug 27, 2010 7:34 AM PDT up reply actions

The adjustment

is what is impressive to me. If he becomes Reynolds would any of us complain, even the Reynolds of 2010? If he was a plodder I’d have my doubts but I think I could live with him given how good he’s supposed to be in the outfield. He may end up being a John Bowker but Canuck didn’t even think he’d ever be able to hit advanced pitching, and he’s now done so for six weeks.

Given how much he struggled in AA to start his career, I think this has been a great season for him and keeps him right in the outfield prospect group. A full year in AA next year and we’ll know more but at least he’s still in the mix and two months ago, that didn’t seem likely.

kyle

he’s probably 5th best OF prospect for me right now:
Sands
Travyon
garcia
paul
russell

by npurcell on Aug 27, 2010 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Paul just seems so MLB-fringe. Good at a lot of things, not really great at any of them. Granted it was in limited action, but I have a hard time thinking of him as a prospect.

Course, I’m no expert. Just basing on observations.

And Russell doesn’t?

by Michael White on Aug 27, 2010 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions

X Paul has over 130 major league at bats now

so he isn’t technically a prospect anymore. I’m glad because I always had trouble ranking him

by Brandon Lennox on Aug 27, 2010 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

I have heard this more than once, and it's a bit ridiculous to me.

Look at Reynolds in the minors. He struck out a lot, but we are talking like 25-27 percent of PA.

Russell is still at 35-40 and that’s not just in AA.

At 24, Reynolds was striking out 30-35% of the time, but he was doing it in the majors.

by Chad Moriyama on Aug 29, 2010 4:46 AM PDT up reply actions

I am so excited about his revival the last 2 months or so in AA

I do think he has a real future in this organization and I think he could be in the majors by the end of next year or start of 2012.

I like him more than most, so I’d go B-.

Me too, I’m hopeful that he can keep this up into next season and then progress to AAA midway through. I just like that we have some players with legit power.
