Lilly, Dodgers Seek To Continue Streaks
A look at today's finale at Coors Field, by the numbers:
- One: Plate appearance by Manny Ramirez in two games since he was claimed off waivers by the White Sox on Friday
- Two: Home runs by Todd Helton this weekend, after two home runs in his previous 31 games and four home runs on the season before Friday
- Three: Saves by the Dodgers this week: two by Hong-Chih Kuo, and one by Octavio Dotel
- Four: Extra-base hits by Rod Barajas, in his four games as a Dodger
- Five: Straight wins by Ted Lilly as a Dodger. The last Dodger pitcher to win six games in a calendar month was Burt Hooton, in August 1975
- Six: Consecutive series finales with the Rockies won by the Dodgers, after splitting the first two games
- Seven: Straight games with a home run for the Dodgers, a season-high streak
- Eight: Doubles in August by Andre Ethier
- Nine: Game hitting streak by Ryan Theriot, who is hitting .333/.366/.513 during that span. Theriot also has nine multi-hit games as a Dodger.
- Ten: Straight series wins over Colorado by the Dodgers
Here is the Dodger record this year, broken down by television station:

Trade rumors?
One idea is for the Tigers to take a shot at Matt Kemp, the Dodgers outfielder who’s in the doghouse. Kemp has talent. He also has a bit of baggage (attitude questions, a fast-lane West Coast life befitting a man who dates Rihanna, etc.) that doesn’t make him a likely candidate for the Tigers.
From The Detroit News: http://www.detnews.com/article/20100828/OPINION03/8280412/1129/Tigers-won-t-reach-top-without-more-pop#ixzz0y0nIOFRZ
Fuck that, Kemp's much more valuable than freakin porcello
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
If Kemp only were able to have a drinking problem like Miguel Cabrera, then he would be a perfect candidate to play for the Tigers.

How to be a sportswrtier for a newspaper these days
Write an article about Matt Kemp saying that he is in the doghouse and dates Rhianna!
They would move Kemp to RF to replace Magglio
If he can’t play CF in Dodger Stadium, it would be a trainwreck in Detroit

Manny’s last AB as a Dodger will be pinch-hitting for Lilly today against Matt Belisle.

Probably the former. I think the White Sox will pay at least half, if not more, of his salary.

It is so sad
What is so sad about not starting Manny in either of these two games, is that the Dodgers are really screwing a player on his way out. In 2008 the Dodgers don’t win unless Manny comes to the Dodgers. While the PED thing last year was not good, when he was healthy he still played well. This year he is showing signs of a 38 year old, but he still hits and according to all offical Dodger reports, Conte, Torre and Ned he has wanted to get back on the field, while has has been injured. I hope Torre is happy when Pods goes 0-3 with a walk and Lilly and the Dodgers lose 6-3…
Perhaps McCourt found a bill he hasn’t paid yet or one of his lawyers will drop out if not paid by Sept 1!
I hope Torre is happy when Pods goes 0-3 with a walk and Lilly and the Dodgers lose 6-3
Humma Kavula would certainly appreciate that score, at least.

Jim Riggleman, unusually candid
talking about Nyjer Morgan’s latest BS last night, from Dave Nichols of Nats News Network:
It’s a mistake, and I can’t minimize it. If I take the approach there’s nothing wrong with it, then we’re going to get people hurt on the field. There’s gotta be retaliation. If Nyjer was playing today he’d get hit. If an opposing player did that to my catcher and he came to the plate he’d get hit.
You almost never see a manager acknowledge an intentional beaning, no matter how obvious (even though this was hypothetical).
Think he tackled a catcher who was standing nowhere near the plate

He tried to score in a play at the plate and tried to run over Anderson, the Cardinals catcher, except he missed the plate. And knocked over Anderson. Pudge Rodriguez grabbed him and told him to go touch him, but that made Morgan out automatically.

White Sox
must be thrilled they are trying to trade for a guy who can’t start over PodBoy. If Manny does end up on the White Sox I will be disappointed that the Rays didn’t trade for him before the fake deadline. I’d much rather see Manny trying to help the Rays beat the Yankee’s, and Sox then the White Sox trying to beat the Twins.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Rays should have offered a sweet prospect then.

By the way the White Sox do go to Fenway September 3rd, 4th and 5th. And play them seven times in September.
So in a ray, Manny could still be helping the Rays hold off the Sox:)

Manny putting the knife into the Red Sox
I would enjoy nothing better at this point to see Manny return to Boston for the White Sox and hit a bunch of HR’s and help push the Red Sox down.

Joe Torre
is a showrunner, who knows which cast member is going to die at the end of the season, but doesn’t want to spoil the surprise, despite the fact that everyone knows about said cast member’s new series
At this point
I still have no idea why Manny is not playing other than it’s an edict from the top or is he indeed done as a Dodger. Torre has his weirdnesses but there’s no way on his own he sits Manny every game of this critical series. Or is there? Maybe they don’t want him to get hurt before he’s traded? But I still don’t get it, wouldn’t you want to work a trade for someone who’s proven he can hit? Or are they just trying to prove We Can Win Without Manny? Assume the latter.

Torre said he wouldn’t sit with #Manny to map out his playing schedule until Tuesday.
Torre on whether he’s benching #Manny to try to get him to waive his no-trade: “I’m not trying to do anything. I’m trying to win games.”
Right…for two games. I was angry when it happened too, but considering that Matt Kemp is tied with James Loney for the club lead in starts, it’s time to move on.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 29, 2010 11:29 AM PDT up reply actions
Torre is such a liar. It’s sad that he won’t just tell the truth. The Dodgers don’t really care about winning.
Well, he’s never going to say “we aren’t playing him because he is about to be traded.” That never happens.
It’s just part of the dance.

But, if Torre believes that Manny can’t play the field, especially in the Yosemite that is Coors Field, then what he is saying is consistent with his beliefs.
Torre could be wrong at the same time he things he is doing the right thing.

No comment would just get the reporters speculating. Don’t ask me sounds crabby. I make the lineup sounds like a dick.
Torre said he thinks this lineup gives him the best chance to win is his best PR move. Now he’s just a guy trying to figure stuff out instead of an asshole who won’t help out the media.
but you know, i know and everyone knows he is lying.

Kyle Russell has really turned it on since the AS Break
especially this month.
Despite his k rate, if he puts up a line of: .265-270/.350/.530 in a full season next year would he be considered one of our top positional prospects?

"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
I think that’s a bs answer, that’s why I reacted like that. At 25 hitting better than all but 1 or 2 of our hitting prospects he’d have to be considered one of our top guys IMO. If he’s 28 and doing it then obviously he’s no prospect, but again I think that if a player is able to play I don’t give a crap about age, he should get a shot to play.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
How many comments do we need on Kyle Russell?
Hundreds? Thousands?
Everyone knows you like the guy. There are only so many ways to make the same point over and over again.
It’s always the same thing. Everyone here tells you:
1) he’s too old for his league(s)
2) he strikes out too much
Yet you always ignore that and want to argue over and over again.
Your feelings on Russell are noted, as are those of just about everyone else.

Not even. Stults was never as good as Russell has been in comparison.
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
Stults provided more use for the organization as the first starter called up from triple-A.
Russell’s role is a PH as currently constructed.
Russell as a player is not better than Sands, Robinson, Kemp, Ethier, or Loney.
He’s a better defender than all those guys (corner guys.) You are right, he’s a PH / defensive replacement. Makes him more valuable than Delwyn Young.

Waiver trade question
Can the Dodgers only trade Manny for players on the White Sox who have also cleared waivers already? ie – Can only players who have cleared waivers on BOTH teams be involved in trades at this point?
Most likely it would be for players to be named later who wouldn’t be picked until their league’s season is over.
by Bob Timmermann on Aug 29, 2010 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions
Anyone on the 40-man roster can only be traded if they clear waivers.
To get around that, a player on the 40-man can be a PTBNL, and the trade can be completed after the season.

A Creative way to have used Manny today
If the Dodgers really wanted to protect both Manny and get mr. energy in Pods, Torre could have batted Manny first and let him have a few AB’s 2-3 and then replace Manny with Pods. Drag about tomorrow when Manny probably gets his last start as a Dodger, he will be rusty!
