I need a nap now. That was some detailed stuff. I think one of the most telling graphs was the location of his knuckleballs.
He is consistently inconsistent. When he is consistent, it seems to be middle in and high. Not the best spots to miss when
the ball is traveling between 65-70 mph. Great stuff there, Eric.
Theriot will go on arbitration next year???
I would like to see DeJesus at 2B next year…

He crushes at Coors no doubt
I think ATF’s point is that he is a great hitter and would hit better than .275, no matter what team he played for.
This was the point I’m making.
That said, it could be argued that great hitters find a way to thrive no matter where they are.
by Riffraffselbow on Aug 29, 2010 12:29 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah I was looking at that
MLB average is 266 at home and 252 on road, so in general hitters are ~5% better at home.
So, just roughly, .267 on the road would be ~.282 on the road, which would (again, roughly) average out to .274 or .275.
So there we are. Huh.

I am thinking
that the Rockies should send him to LA to see if his splits improve any. I would love for LA to be
the place he attempts to prove the Coors field theory wrong.
Eh, CarGo doesn't need to do that
Holliday is already a perfectly fine case study

Well I didn't explicitly say that
but I wouldn’t be surprised. He has improved his approach since he was last there.

I obviously dont watch cargo everyday, but his numbers say otherwise. He is walking less than he ever has, is swinging at a ton more pitches outside the zone, etc. I just dont know how sustainable his production would be away from Coors.
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 29, 2010 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions
When you improve your OContact% from 45% to 59.2%, increasing your OSwing% isn't necessarily a bad thing
He has just been making better contact, home and road.
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Aug 29, 2010 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions
I just dont know if a jump that big is sustainable. The lack of walks, especially on the road, is alarming. His BABIP wont continue to be .370, and unless your name is Vlad Guerrero, its really hard to be a stud with that kind of O-Swing%
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 29, 2010 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions
The thing is, he is certainly capable of matching Vlad Guerrero at O-Swing%
Vlad can’t be the only one. He scalds the ball often, so he will always have a high BABIP. I agree that the K/BB home/road splits are worrying though

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Aug 29, 2010 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions
So did Pablo Sandoval last year. Cargos batted ball stats are pretty similar to last year, but his BABIP (other than his stint with Colorado springs) is miles ahead of anything hew put up at any other level. The dude is a really good player, but there is potential for some huge regression.
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 29, 2010 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I can't really argue with that
Good argument with Sandoval, though his LD% has dropped a lot.
CarGo is posting better numbers than he should be – that I can’t argue – but my eyes say that regression won’t be as big as typical SABR view would suggest. Could just be my purple shades though
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Aug 29, 2010 1:05 PM PDT up reply actions
It definitely is hard to predict regression when you look at a player everyday and they are thriving. I just can see where Cargo could struggle next season if he continues to not walk, chase pitches, and hits into a little bit less luck. All of that feeds into each other, and if he hits into less luck to start the season, he might chase more, put more pressure on himself, and then all of the other numbers come down with it (which i believe happened to Kemp this season). You just never know in baseball where stuff can fluctuate so much year to year.

by Riffraffselbow on Aug 29, 2010 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions
In fairness, Holliday isn't the only one with crazy home/road splits in his Rockies career
whose splits disappeared when leaving Coors. Vinny Castilla is identified as a Coors product, but he hit .835 OPS away from home his first year after leaving Colorado (his career OPS is .737). I could go on and on….

Should have backed Andre up more.
by Riffraffselbow on Aug 29, 2010 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Pretty much
One of the least publicized effects is the reverse Coors Effect. With all the talented lineups the Rockies have put out in their 18 year history, only one has posted a sOPS+ above league average on the road. There is undoubtedly an advantage to hitting at Coors, but there is a disadvantage in moving away from Coors and playing a different game.
Matt Holliday had egregious home/road splits, and many projected his road stats only as how he would perform without playing at Coors. Yet his home/road splits mostly disappeared with St. Louis, with both regressing towards each other. It would work that way with CarGo as well

I would HATE to trade CDI within the division
The minor league system is pretty stocked with SP and OF, and with Ey2, Herrera and Nelson all vying for the 2B job, one may even be traded away. The weakness is corner infield bats, though I’m not sure if Iannetta is enough to address that with his weak 08-09

Has to be more than just a L/R split problem when your vs LHP OPS+ is 125 and vs RHP is 91.

He is an above average game calling
average to slightly below average at throwing runners out and average to above average at blocking balls.
As for Olivo, he was signed to be the backup, and Iannetta got most of the starts early on. But Olivo raked for three months while Iannetta struggled mightily.

cos I’ve been on Kemp’s case all year. Hard to believe he gets defended as much as he does on here. Larry Bowa is really irrelevant, the players must be held accountable. Matt Kemp needs to rededicate himself or get the fuck out of town.
That which is in constant motion contains all possible forms.
The sad part is that Kemp really is a massive talent
There’s absolutely no reason he can’t be the best all around CF in the national league.

of the Hammels of the world.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
Hammel's stats were pretty much terrible with Tampa
I think Bob Apodaca deserves some credit for this, considering the career turn arounds Matt Belisle, Jorge de la Rosa and Jason Marquis have had in Rockie uniforms recently

Really
your fighting us for fourth place and you think your pitching is above reproach?
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I'm just asking for examples
Given the pitching staff is #1 in MLB in WAR, attacking the pitching isn’t really very correct. I forgot Huston Street had a nice little turnaround too, specifically due to Apodaca changing his spot on the pitching rubber.
I’m not trolling here or calling the Dodgers crap. Just mentioning that the Rockies’ pitching coach deserves some credit. Is there a problem with that?

No, just really irritated right now with my team.
I’ve just always found when someone wants to give any coach kudo’s for certain players they seem to forget about the players he hasn’t helped. Maybe your boy is better then most.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
I understand your irritation, and maybe I shouldn't be here in a 7-1 game
Cook has regressed under Apodaca, and there are a few relievers that have just been terrible. But there have been far more to experience career years with the Rockies after a subpar career than the other way around, which just shouldn’t happen at Coors Field. Marquis and Jennings also fell apart after leaving Colorado. It is almost eerie

It really wasn’t that absurd of a statement. His High A and AA numbers last year matched up favorably to Billingsley and McDonald, both of whom appeared with the major league club the following year.
Billingsley might not have actually, but I thought Withrow would have the same track JMac did in 2008 when he got a cup of coffee.

Would have needed to pit up Kershaw type numbers.
by bhsportsguy on Aug 29, 2010 1:48 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
In hindsight, no he wouldn’t have. The team has trotted out weak starters like Monk and Ely due to lack of options.
Had he repeated in AA what he did at the end of last season, the Dodgers would have started him. They had nobody else.

by Michael White on Aug 29, 2010 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Right, don't know how Miller got in this conversation.
We two pitchers in Elbert/McDonald who should have stepped us this spring but didn’t, Withrow was a long shot but if he done what we expected he might have forced himself into the equation.
This season has pretty much been a fail for everyone under 25 who was on the team or who was expected to help the team later other then Kershaw/Billingsley/Jansen/DeWitt.

40%. Kemp has enough talent that somebody will bite, especially on a buy low situation.
40% for Loney as well. Even the Dodgers can’t love him like they usually do when he hits like this.

by Michael White on Aug 29, 2010 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions
It is entirely possible this is just a down season for Kemp. Shit happens and people have bad seasons. I think it is more realistic for Kemp to return to being a 4-5 win player rather than continue what he has done this season.
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 29, 2010 2:14 PM PDT up reply actions
The only thing I dispute about the WAR getting back there is that I think he’s peaked in terms of defensive value. He has to move to a corner spot.
On the other hand, he can and should be able to replicate his 2009 success at the plate.
by Michael White on Aug 29, 2010 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions
Its possible, but I still think he can be an average center fielder. After the first two months of the year he has been perfectly fine in center. Saying that doesnt help with the crappy first two months, but you can see that its still there for him to be average. Who knows, maybe this year propels him to gt more serious in the off season about certain aspects of his game. Or, he could go the other way and just say fuck it all. Next season is huge for him, and we’ll just have to see how he plays.
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 29, 2010 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions
If we trade him we would get an outfielder in return
Still think a BJ / Kemp headline deal makes sense for both teams since the Rays of Jennings a true CF ready to play, but they are losing their LF, while Upton would give us a true CF.

No

Upton would drive this coaching staff just as nutty. He truly dogs it on the outfield, where Kemp is just not a good defensive outfielder at times.

I don’t know. Torre’s just said if Frank McCourt asked him back for one more year, he’d do it. The idea of Torre trying it again for one more year scares me, especially if Bowa comes back. The team doesn’t need an attack dog anymore.
I dont know if i can go through another year of Torre and Bowa and Ned. Ned’s gonna be here obviously, but those other two just need to move on.

The Rays want some money too. Kemp is making a reasonable $7+ million in 2011 but then he would be probably due for more in 2012. Obviously that is problem with dealing Loney too.

That’s how Giants fans look at things. “How did the Dodgers do?” Last year it was “Yay they didn’t make the World Series!” It’s like, your own team crapped the bed, who cares what this other team did? (Still, I admit to vindicitively rooting against Giants all the time, regardless.)
