8/29/10 Minor League Report – Sellers Buys Respect with Another Offense Outburst
AAA – The Isotopes doubled up Oklahoma City on Sunday 10 to 5 behind a solid start by Jon Ely and a another offensive outburst. Ely went 7 innings and allowed just 3 earned runs, although he did give up 2 long balls. Brent Leach, who had recently been promoted back up to AAA, threw in relief for some reason even though he has been very good as a starter, and allowed a run, while Jon Link threw a perfect 9th inning. Justin Sellers again had a big game on offense, this time pounding out 2 doubles and his 13th homer of the season. Not to be outdone, Russell Mitchell also homered and went 2 for 4 on the night.
AA – Rubby De La Rosa had his worst outing while in AA, but his start actually wasn’t too bad at all. That just shows how good Rubby has been since his promotion. De La Rosa allowed 7 hits and 3 runs while striking out 6 in 7 innings, but didn’t factor into the decision as the Lookouts bullpen surrendered 6 runs in the final 2 frames. Mario Alvarez, Javy Guerra, and Cole St. Clair gave up 2 runs each as the Lookouts lost the game 9 to 4. None of the Dodger prospects did much at the plate, although Kyle Russell ripped a triple and Dee Gordon stole his 50th base of the season. Catcher Alex Garabedian provided most the offense with his 2 run homer in the 4th inning.
High A – Josh Walter allowed 4 runs in 5 innings and picked up his 9th loss of the season to go with his one win. The good news, however, was that the 66ers bullpen was perfect over the final 4 innings of the game, including Robert Boothe’s 3 flawless frames. The Inland Empire offense literally did nothing of significance except for the fact that both Austin Gallagher and Alfredo Silverio each had doubles.
A – The Loons had a forgettable game on Sunday as they went down to the Whitecaps 8 to 1. Greg Wilborn started for Great Lakes and was unable to match the success he had in his previous 2 starts as he allowed 9 hits and 5 runs over 5 innings. One of those runs was unearned, however, and Wilborn struck out 5. Steve Smith had a poor outing in relief, giving up 3 runs in 2 innings. For the second straight game, there isn’t much to report in regards to the Loons offense. They only managed 5 hits, with Blake Smith connecting for 2 of them including a double. Chris Jacobs collected the only RBI with a double in the 7th inning.
Rookie Ogden – The Raptors lost 9 to 5 on Sunday despite a big night from Jake Lemmerman. The shortstop went 2 for 5 with a double and his 8th homer of the year to increase his batting average to .355 for the season. Jonathan Garcia, Blake Dean, and Casio Grider also had 2 hits apiece. Ogden starter Arismendy Ozoria had a rough day, giving up 5 hits, 3 walks, and 5 runs in just 3.1 innings of work. Logan Bawcom also struggled out the pen as he allowed 3 runs in 2 innings of relief.
Rookie Arizona – The Arizona Dodgers lost 5 to 4 on Sunday night in what I believe is their final game of the season. I’m pretty sure this loss means that they fell just short of making the playoffs, so unless some of these guys get promoted to Ogden to finish out the year, it will be the last you see of many of these players in 2010. Nathan Eovaldi made another rehab start and this time was dominate, striking out 4 batters in 4 innings while allowing just 3 hits. Unfortunately, Brandon Martinez was not quite as sharp as he got knocked around for 6 hits and 5 runs in just 2 innings. At the plate, outfielder Noel Cuevas had the team’s only extra base hit as he doubled and went 2 for 4. Matt Kirkland and Alexis Aguilar also had multi-hit games, while right fielder Ethier knocked in 2 runs

What stood out to me
12-2 Groundouts-flyouts
I had just meant worst start in terms of earned runs
since 3 was the most he’d allowed

Mitchell
Does he get a September callup? Might be nice to give him some time at third and if he can hit in the bigs look into moving the Beard.
if he can hit in the bigs
he won’t.

He might, but he’s not on the 40 man. Then again, they will need to add him to the 40-man this winter anyway if they want to keep him, so it’s possible.

I’ve always liked him because he’s from Rome, Georgia and there ain’t much shaking down there, just a textile mill town that time is passing by. Nice to see a local boy make good.
