I am heading home now. Be back in an hour or so. Go Dodgers.
I will leave you with one of the many motto’s of the Marine Corps Scout Snipers:
“Run all you want, you’ll just die tired.”
Hour commute in Ar Kansas
is different then an hour commute in LA. I’m guessing you live 50 miles away, while most here would take an hour to commute 15 miles.
Hell, he might live 70 miles away, and is just fast.

EJax gets the win, but only after Ozzie lets him go to 130 pitches and gives up 2 runs in the 9th. Boo Ozzie.
Yup. He got a break two starts ago when he didnt pitch because the game was cancelled, but 130 is still a lot pitches, especially when you are up by 3 in the 9th. The White Sox pen has sucked, but ill take the 8 strong and let the pen get 3 outs.

They didn't want to use Jenks
Jenks threw thirty something pitches two days ago and blew the save last night… Still inexcusable though

In 5 years we’ll either be calling Edwin Jackson the most durable arm in the big leagues, or we’ll be calling AJ Hinch the next Dusty Baker.

He threw a ton of pitches last year during the first half of the season, including a game of like 132. Edwin has always thrown a lot of pitches, but Leyland and Hinch really pushed the limit.

Regarding Lindsey over Loney
Keep in mind that Loney is a far superior defensive 1bman than Lindsey. This is based on scouting reports, fielding stats and also having seen Lindsey play a few times. I always root for guys like that so I wouldn’t mind him getting a call up in Sept just so he can get his cup of coffee, and I understand why people are down on Loney these days but some perspective is in order. Lindsey is rather bad on defense, Loney is pretty good. That’s separate even from knowing how Lindsey would fare in the majors as a hitter. Since we have no evidence that he’d be any good. Again, I’m rooting for him to get a chance, but perspective please…
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
I understand, and I wasn’t really being serious. I want to see the guy get a few ABs and maybe start a few games at 1B in Sept for us, it won’t really hurt us at this point. That said, even though I love Loney’s defense, there has got to be a better option this offseason, which is why I brought up Berkman.
Meercatjohn,
You really think Berkman is going to get a $10+ mil contract? I tend to think if his option is declined, and it probably should be since I don’t think the Yanks are going to pay him $15 mil to DH, that he would probably go for something like $7-8 mil. That seems like reasonable price to pay.
Yah Berkman would be nice to have
but I don’t see the Dodgers ponying up thatmuch for him. I think they also have more faith in Loney than a lot of y’all do, but they are also probably disappointed in his lack of slugging development atthis point. He’s still a lot younger than Berkman so maybe he can still develop. But certainly I wouldn’t say no to Berkman!
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
I’d rather pay Loney $4mil than Berkman $8-10mil for similar production.

Well, according to B-R.com
2010:
Loney 0.7WAR
Berkman 1.0WAR
sooo…
Pele breathes words of comfort, Seena just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades, Is that a chevy 69?
Not really fair this year
Berkman lost a ton of time. The old guys don’t come back from the injuries as easily as they used to.
Would they be equally different in age in March 2010 as well?
Pele breathes words of comfort, Seena just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades, Is that a chevy 69?
Loney has 95 more at bats than Berkman. I guess if you gave him those 95 at bats in Houston at his 1.2WAR over 298ABs, he’d be at about a 1.4 WAR this year.
What I meant in my comment was that he’d have just as hard of a time recovering from the injury next year as he did this year. He won’t have the same injury, of course, but he’d still be an injury concern for a lot of money.

Paul Konerko at age 34 is having his best season by far
He actually has a .400 OBP, and is flirting with a .600 slug%. Can we make the statement that Paulie did not do steroids?
The best part of his career season at age 34, is that Joe Sheehan said he was going to hit the wall this year. He has a frigging OPS+ of 160, when his career high before was 136 at age 29.
I haven't heard any either

I'll take a cycle
they are rarer and for me much more exciting because of the whole triple fact. Even more would be the cycle in order or reverse order.
I would rather see a no-hitter, by far.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 31, 2010 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions
I've seen one
When the Dodgers go 40 years between cycles and only decades between no hitters, I’ll take the thing that is harder to do.
There are many ways to have a better game than hitting for the cycle, though. Plenty of guys have had multiple HR or 3 XBH in their 4-hit games.
It is rare to find a pitched game better than a no-hitter (basically you have to go Kerry Wood / Brandon Morrow)
by Eric Stephen on Aug 31, 2010 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions
On that note
I’d rather see an 18 K game then a no – hitter. I’d also rather see four triples then four home runs.
4 straight HRs to tie a game
then one to win it in extras though = priceless, that game I would have loved to be at, even more than a no-no or cycle

Karros
A little late with this but what do you guys remember when you think of Karros’ time with the Dodgers. I was never a huge fan of his and remember all the DPs and the pronouncements of “its early” in the middle of July. I know he is the LA leader in HRs and the ’92 ROY but I just do not have fond memories of him.
In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened
I think his fall at the end
discolored his early success. I know I was a big fan but when we traded Konerko and kept Karros, I was already tired of him. Your right his “its early” comments when he sucked every April did get irritating, and he should never come down on anyone jagging to 1st base because he was the king of it because of his bad knees.
I remember him coming off the bag right before he caught the ball, every time he caught the ball, almost daring umpires to say something.

That was amazing
and they never called it. I think he did that to make up for the fact he couldn’t stretch worth shit.
I was SUPER young when I watched him play
and that’s all I really remember of him.
I remember when he became the all time LA Dodger leader in HR and thinking that was a bigger deal that it was given credit for.

The old tag the runner (who didn’t play dead), throw to 1B by the 2B DP
by Eric Stephen on Aug 31, 2010 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions
Baserunning error on double play?
runner from first should not let himself be tagged out there?
especially with only 1 out and a runner on 3rd…even if the runner from 1st is tagged out after the batter is thrown out at 1st, the runner from 3rd should score!
Exactly
I think you gotta play dead and/or run back toward 1B, although I think Loney was too close to Utley by the time he fielded it and his momentum took him to the out.
by Eric Stephen on Aug 31, 2010 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, that ought to draw Loney a fine
if not from Torre at least from the Kangaroo Court, if they have one
It was weird though, like Eric said, the ball was hit right to where Loney was at so he didn’t have much choice. Even if he lays down to avoid the tag, Utley probably still has time to chase him down and throw out Casey McGimpy.
Pele breathes words of comfort, Seena just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades, Is that a chevy 69?
yeah but Loney & the first base coach should have foreseen this
and made plans on what to do if something like that happened….
the game is played with breaks in action so one can plan ahead how to react…i hate it when players don’t think and it results in giving away a run
lets say Loney heads back to first…even if Blake is thrown out at first, then Loney is tagged out before getting to 2nd, the runner from 3rd should cross before the tag, and a run is in
But if Loney thought he could get passed the ball Utley would have had to throw to second base, which I assume is what happened.

Pete Carroll has never had to deal with depth issues
Everytime I hear a coach say they traded someone because they like the depth they have at that player’s position, I always think about how quickly pitch depth can fade.
Granted, they traded some safety who wasn’t going to play for a draft pick, and I’m not knocking the Seahawks or Carroll, I just find that reasoning funny.

Most Rule Five guys
hit the minors after surviving the roster. At least pitchers who were pulled from A ball anyway. Or I could be wrong.
Which is why he never should have been on the roster in the first place. Its not like he has something that 20 other guys in the system dont have.

I rather have him up and fail then one of our pitching prospects come up and suck.. and have the JMac bullshit happen or something like that.
I hope I can get some Manny dreads still
That makes absolutely zero sense to me. If the two players will both suck, wouldnt you want the one that has potential to be the one getting big league experience?
by UCLADodger32 on Aug 31, 2010 7:54 PM PDT up reply actions
No
you’d rather the one that has potential not get his soul crushed by getting beat up by hitters that are over his head. Also, you’d like him to be able to develop without the added pressure of having to win games or be sent down.

If you can't/don't have a half decent 5th starter
risking your top prospect to fill that spot is probably the least of your concerns.

I don't know about MOST guys
but probably the best Rule V pitcher (at least to my knowledge) Johan Santana, spent his Rule V year in the majors getting 86 IP of 6.49ERA ball. Despite that, he stayed in the bigs the following season (at age 22) at got 43 innings of 4.74ERA ball.
Yet, somehow, the third year, at age 23, he threw 108.1 IP of 2.99 ERA ball.
And apparently for 25 bucks a year you get to say “HAHAHAHAHA – The Mets are a joke!!!”

Here's a question
would you rather have Ely as the Rule 5 guy?
Leading the league in OMGs || Proud owner of a Chad Billingsley Real Doll
I think Ely has more potential than Monk.
I dont see what the Dodger scouts saw in Monk to get him out of A ball.
I'd like to argue with you but I can't.
Water under the bridge but I think the Dodgers would have been better off in 2010 sending Monk back to the Phillies and making room for either Elbert or McDonald from the get go. Alot of maybe’s but I have a hard time seeing who we are better off having Monk on the roster all year instead of our boys who had put in time and deserved a real shot.
Me neither. Everybody was praising his changeup, but its barely above average at best. He’s just not that good.

Can we stop whining about JMac being gone?
I still see people crying about him leaving, but he stunk it up in EVERY opportunity to start, like, without fail. Sure, they could’ve possibly gotten more for him, but he stinks in Pittsburgh too, and probably will continue to suck. If all 5 starters are healthy, he doesn’t get to start anyway, in fact his suckitude was why they went out to get Lilly.
That which is in constant motion contains all possible forms.
Yeah, seperate from the arguments about his potential and the trade
it’s the same point being made over and over again. He’s gone, he;‘s not coming back. I get it. I wish they hadn’t made that trade either. But saying it 100 times doesn’t make the point more interesting.

and we traded him for a mediocre closer when we are falling out of a playoff race.
Adam Morrison has more rings than Lebron, Bosh, and Wade combined?
I see the point that Dotel was a useless pickup
but if he doesn’t get traded, he gets squeezed out by Lilly, pitches tonight maybe and in long relief, gets another chance next spring, but if he sucked then, what would be his value? The Dodgers made the calculation that Dotel as a contributor on the current roster, however remote the chance they make the playoffs, was worth more than whatever they could get for him at lowered value in the future.
That which is in constant motion contains all possible forms.
a little late with this comment
but “whining” is not the same as having a complaint that you don’t share. You obviously didn’t like JMac, so any comments made in his defense are probably going to rub you the wrong way. But if you really do consider it whining when a few people point out (correctly) he’d have been a better option for a #5 starter than Monk, I can’t imagine how you feel about all the Carlos Santana comments.
I think "whining" is exactly "complaining when you don't share the point"
I just thought JMac blew chance after chance with LA and it was frustrating, nothing personal against him. As far as Santana, obviously he never got his chance with LA, but I don’t think that trade was a disaster either because, while his future is still TBD, Blake was an integral part of 2 straight NLCS teams and solidified an impact position.

Second day in a row Rick and Charlie are going to town. Charlie has just informed us that Manny had become a “singles hitter who couldn’t run and couldn’t field”. (Singles hitters with .500+ slugging percentages are hard to come by these days.) Second day in a row Charlie told us Manny’s post suspension numbers, adding, “Draw your own conclusions.”
He also said that the Dodgers (ownership, presumably) couldn’t be blamed for signing him to a big contract, that they’d done the right thing. Basically, he was praising ownership while bashing Manny. Draw your own conclusions.

I’ve been one of the biggest supporters of your brother all year long, even in the darkest of his troubles. But if he expects to get more than a minor league deal this offseason after he is non-tendered he’s kidding himself. That being said, I hope to god his minor league deal is with us. I’ve never heard a bad word about him in the media, and he still fills a role that teams pay a lot of money to get filled. I’d love to see him back and I genuinely think our fans would rather see him succeed and that the ones who boo him are the ones who boo because it’s trendy. We just all need to be realistic about what this offseason is going to bring for him.
