August 4th, Padres vs Dodgers - Simulation

I used my simulator to simulate 100000 baseball games between the Padres and the Dodgers using what to the best of my knowledge will be close to today's starting lineups.  The simulator outputs a win probability for each team, along with the average total runs scored, a distribution matrix of all the final scores and how often they occurred, and an averaged box score tally of all games combined.  The simulator takes into account such things as defense, park factors, home field advantage, pitchers tiring and a proprietary set of hitter and pitcher projections that are calibrated on a daily basis.  There are many references to Vegas win probabilities.  This is just a measuring stick I use to determine how well my simulator does.  This by no means is meant as a tool to use to gamble on baseball games, it is more of an exercise in analyzing baseball games.  You may find it strange that there are so many one run games listed as the most likely score, and that the home team is always favored to win in the top couple of scores.  This is due to basic math and the way that baseball rules play out of having the home team bat last.  Here is a great article explaining this phenomenon.  Here are the latest Vegas MLB odds.

Today's Results... (Last simulation ran Tuesday at 11:45 PM)

Visitors Home Pitching Matchup Favorite Vegas Win Prob Simulator Win Prob
 SD LAN W.LeBlanc vs V.Padilla LAN 58.33% 59.06%

Notes:  Not enough to put a scare into the rest of the NL West teams, but the Dodgers did manage to knock off the first place Padres last night, thanks to the newly acquired Ted Lilly.  Both Vegas and the simulator give the Dodgers a moderate chance of making it two in a row against the pests from down south.  Get your game score and over/under guesses in.

Over/Under Questions:

1. Total runs both teams combined: 6.5
2. V.Padilla number of pitches: 101.5
3. Number of Dodgers bullpen pitchers used: 2.5
4. W.LeBlanc total batters faced: 25.5
5. Total bases from Dodgers starting C/2B/SS combined: 3.5

Over/Under Question(s)

-Correct over/under guess is worth 10 points.
-Correct game score guess is worth ranking of the score in the table.
-Nobody guesses score correctly, then 5-3-1 to the three closest people to the ranking of the score in the table (team you picked to win must win to be eligible).
- Over/Under guesses do not need to be unique but game score guesses do.

1. Total runs both teams combined: 6.5
2. V.Padilla number of pitches: 101.5
3. Number of Dodgers bullpen pitchers used: 2.5
4. W.LeBlanc total batters faced: 25.5
5. Total bases from Dodgers starting C/2B/SS combined: 3.5

Nobody got the score correct (no big surprise there). Couple of close calls, but nobody got the over/under either. The 5-3-1 points go to…

5 – delias man (LAN #77)
3 – MammothDodger (LAN #72)
1 – Phil Gurnee (LAN #49)

I thought 6-0 was going to net me 45 points there for awhile. Fucking Ryan Theriot. If he gets a single there we’re at 6-0. Course, I think Ethier then homered so it didn’t matter, but still DAMN that was close.

I’m just waiting for someone to hit an 80 pointer or something and jump 15 or 20 spots in the leaderboard.
