Hips Are Bringing More Athletes to Their Knees
Perhaps if nothing more than for more Russell Martin hip injury comparables, here is a 2009 article by Michael S. Schmidt from the New York Times, regarding the rash of hip injuries last season in baseball, and possible reasons why.

Interesting
I wonder how much hockey Russ played when he was young, and at what age he started playing.
really bad news
I know that Russell Martin, inexplicably, has not been the same since the ‘08 All-Star game/Blake Trade/Mattingly era began (take your pick), but I still think he’s done more good on the field than not. Because we all hoped he was going to be the next Roy Campanella, some of the good stuff he does well gets overlooked. I still had hope that he’d turn it around somewhat, as he seemed to be driving the ball somewhat better the last month. His defense was inconsistent, but still pretty solid, and he didn’t get enough credit for his good OBP, as the frustration with his power outage seemed to take precedence. And of course, the Lucas May trade, the one trade of the more recent ones that was probably easiest to accept, just makes this that much more……arrrrgh!
Overall, a bummer for the Russ, a bummer for the Dodgers, and a bummer for us. I hope he’ll be able to come back from this eventually and be able to revive his career. Who knows- maybe we’ll have our third baseman of the future, after all!
